Title: Prolong the sprocket life or not....
Post by: Patrol on July 04, 2020, 05:28:12 pm
I have this supersprox sprocket on the rear it has done 32k km and I still see some life left in it, instead of changing it out with a complete new set, can I fit a cheap 525 pitch chain and ride for another maybe 20k km and then change it as a set, I really cant see me throwing it out as it still looks good...

I need to change the chain now as it has flatspots in it, so I just want to prolong the life of this beautiful sprocket, who has a new 525, I am willing to buy it...

Yes you know mos stroms are pissy bikes they dont have enough torque to hurt those sprockets

Cheap chains don't ever last 20k

They are okay until they are not. That okay to not can happen very quickly on low quality chains.

Sorry friend I am very dubious about the claim of 32 000km on that sprocket  :patch:

I have taken pics of my bike km's a few days before I fitted the sprocket compared to the OEM sprocket, see the info on the pics,,,, so these sprockets do last but I cant just threw it away

So the properly buggered oem sprocket only did 1333 km.  :eek7:
Still the original chain ?

It all depends on the state of the front sprocket... >:D

That rear sprocket can easily take another chain,  just check the condition of the front sprocket.

Check your front!

But I intend to do the same with my Powerparts rear. Except mine discolored after a year's use and doesn't still look as flashy as yours.

No bought bike new and the oem chain and sprockets were changed just after that 33k then I put the supersprox and new xring chain on, bike is now just more than 67k km

Check the front sprocket. If it's good then just get a new (decent quality) chain. My Transalp went through three chains before needing new sprockets - OEM sprockets gave me nearly 60,000km. No idea why or how - could have something to do with only having to deal with 59 horses.

Yes, the best thing to do is replace chain and sprockets all at the same time because they seat into each other properly, but if your sprockets are still looking that good then there's really no point. Don't get a cheap chain though. When a chain fails it can do serious damage to you and your bike.

If it was me I would keep the rear, possibly replace the front depending on wear, and definitely replace the chain if it has tight links.

Can the rear sprocket be reversed? If it can, swap it around to get a truly fresh set of teeth, it is still early enough.

Why risk it.

Damage to splines etc. Not worth the cost of a front sprocket

Patrol I think you should shift over to second on long straight sections of road!! ;) :lol8:

Please let us know what the final amount of kilos out of this sprocket is one day. :deal: :thumleft:

Doh! Misread - thought you were suggesting turning the front sprocket around  :o

On my KLR a chain and front sprocket lasts about 27k km. I then change them, and only change the rear sprocket at the next  swop. In other words, rear sprocket sees 2 chains and front sprockets in it's lifetime.

A front sprocket certainly can be turned over. All it takes is a bit of ingenuity, nothing is impossible.

Er, correction there. Nothing is possible, I actually do quite a lot of it.

I have this supersprox sprocket ..... it still looks good...

I don't think it does, compare it with the photo when it was new?
But, take a new chain and roll it over the sprocket, and hold both ends fixed on one side - can you move the chain, on the opposite side, over the sprocket?
My guess is that'll be a Yes, hence you'll need new cpl kit....

Why??

A friend who rides an Africa Twin CFR1000 original chain lasted 41500km, no shit. Bought the bike new. We changed the sprcket and chain as a set.
He is very meticulous about cleaning and lubrication of the chain. He does not ride hard at all and it was his daily commute.
