Title: Long weekend ride
Post by: MellowJo on August 15, 2020, 10:14:41 am
We had to get in a bit of riding after months of lockdown ....

So Eisbein called and put together a small group

Eisbein on his 1200 GSA
Hilander on a 1200 GS
Myself on my 1150 GS
Operator on the Husky 701
Biesie on a borrowed KTM 990

The plan was on Day 1 to go via Tankwa, Ouberg pass on to Middelpos
Day 2 was to be from Middlepos to Cederberg Oasis
Day 3 would beack home

After filling up with fuel, we headed out to the  Tankwa padstal ....

There were many groups of bikes, and 4x4 's  all just riding away from the city ...

From Tankwa, we headed directly east, through the farm and left at the two T- junctions ....

This took us via a small unknown road all along a ridge , through many gates, to the foot of the Ouberg pass ....

Then it was a hop, skip and a jump and we were all on top ....

It does not matter how many times you get up here, it is always magnificent

From the top of Ouberg, we took a left North via Skurweberg towards Middelpos ....

When we stopped at Middlepos, we were missing the KTM ....

After riding the whole day, no one was in the mood to change a tube 5km from the Middelpos Hotel, so it was inflated with Tyre weld goo, pumped and driven to the Hotel .....

After establishing that we could get fuel the next morning, we decided to chill in the lounge and discuss the matters of the world .....

We had a good old farmhouse Karoo dinner and dropped dead for the night ....

DAY 2

During the night, the wind was howling to the extent that I put in my earplugs to sleep ....

In the early morning, I peeked outside and saw that it did in fact rain and that the world was nice and wet outside  ......

So after breakfast and packing, we filled the bikes, checked the KTM front tyre and were ready to go ....

Alas, Operator decided that his front tyre was also suspect and had to be changed .....

Oh well, after a quick change of front tube, we were eventually on our way .... by mid morning ....

The route was to go via Gannaga pass back to the Tankwa padstal, anf from there over Katbakkies pass to the Cededberg Oasis.

By now the road was nice wet and slippery .... but it was only 30km to Gannaga pass, and from there it was downhill ..... :peepwall:

Exactly, I have a few dirty T-shirts to prove that ......  :deal:

Anyway, about 15m into the day, Operator and myself hit this first mud hole .....
After carefully navigating through it with feet paddling , I stop to wait and see the rest of the team through this mud bath ....

and wait .....

and wait ....

Eventually I turn around and paddle back  ...... only to find this scene .....

The  Tyre weld in the KTM front wheel decided to let go ....

Oh well, after the swop of front tube in the morning, we were confident that this would not take to long ......

It was now raining steadily though, which made the process a little more complicated ......

After loosening 3 of the pinch bots, the last one just did not want to budge ......

And then the Jeep cavalry arrived from Gannaga side .....

The Jeep group had some Q20, and in no time the final bolt was loose .....

Since we changed the tube earlier, this should not be too difficult ....

The rain did however intensify, and we were having issues to get this tyre back onto the rim ....

In the end when we had the tyre back, we tried to get some CO2 bombs to inflate it, but to no avail, it stayed pap .....

Ok out with the little compressor, but still no joy, .....pap.

Ok so I must have pinched the tube ....
.
.
.
Off with the tyre again .....
This time we had to patch the tyre with the first hole ... and the tyre weld ....

After some challenges to get the only patch that we had on propperly, the tube was inserted and
we were back to trying to get the tyre back on ...  without pinching the tube ....

A long story short, we pinched it again ...

so it was decided that the group would split with one group taking the wheel back to Middelpos and to try to get a local to fix it .....

I stayed with the stricken Biesie ...
.
.

It rained and the wind blew and the temperature dropped, I was sure that it was going to snow .....

While waiting it out, another group of 4 bikes approached us from the Gannaga pass side ....

They have been paddling it towards Middelpos and only reached us then .... about mid day ......
We sent them on their way,  they wanted to reach Merweville before sunset ......

..... and waited like the proverbial "Rageltjie de Beer" in the snow for our team to return ...........
.
.
Anyway, some time later I decided that I would quickly ride to Gannaga Lodge to try to secure a place to sleep for the night, we were not be able to get to the Oasis ...
When I eventually reached Gannaga Lodge by 15h00, they told me that there was really no place for anymore visitors.
I called the team, and they confirmed that they have already called the Lodge and got the same answer ......
Luckily, the team managed to get us a place to sleep in the Middelpos Hotel, where we slept the previous evening ....  :imaposer:

This meant that I had to return the same way, 30km of paddling through he mud, back to Middelpos

The guys managed to track down the local tyre expert who fixed the KTM front tyre and they delivered it back to Biesie .....

......On my way back,  I found Biesie with his now nicely firm front tyre, ...... and we ambled back to basecamp

...... when I finally made it back to base camp, I was dirty as a pig, cold and tired ......

We also found the other group of bikers from the morning also there ......

We spent the whole day riding, only to end up where we left off in the morning     :laughing4:  :imaposer:

Oh well, we were all together, next to a nice fire, with a warm dinner and warm beds for the night .....

..... and none of us had a fall  ......

...to speak of ....

Day 3

During the night the wind pumped again, but by morning the clouds were moving away and it looked much dryer than the previous day.

The plan was now to go down Gannaga pass, via Tankwa padsatl, over Katbakkies pass and then on home via Gydo pass and Ceres.

Since we did not move a lot on day 2, we did not have to refill the bikes and all the tyres were inflated !!!

SO after breakfast we all kitted up and got going, this was going to be a long day ....

.... we did not get in more than 5km when this happened ....

... and a rear wheel this time !!!

And so it was back to the local tyre master ......

After this fix, we finally made it past the Gannaga Lodge by about 11h00 on day 3 ......

... down the pass ....

and eventually to the Tankwa padstal where we found our Jeep brigade again .....

After lunch, we split up with the larger group going over Katbakkies pass ....

Eeeeish, eventful weekend

Yup,  and so after a nice jolly over the sweeps and jumps of Katbakkies, we finally turned onto the tar back to Ceres .....

But on the final stretch to Op-die-berg, can you believe it !!!!!!
... the KTM decided that we needed to handle one more front wheel  puncture ....
...this time it was the original pacth from day 2 that decided to let go ....

By this time we were so geared for this, ....  that it took only a few minutes before we had the other patched tube in and pumped .....

We could finally drop down Gydo pass in Prince Alfred's Hamlet where we filled up for a last time ....

Now it was just a blast back home ....

Those clay roads are brutal in the wet  :(
I remember one trip, where you get over Ouberg and turn right at the T-junction to Sutherland.
Think I was on the 640, and spun out a few times. Louwtjie was on the yellow 1200 GSA, and by his 6th fall was in tears..... I would have been too.

Good RR MJ, I will refrain from getting drawn into the tube/tubeless debate.
I have also had lots off stress with punctures, but riding a decent bike is worth that bit of pain  8)
