So the plan was to ride to Hogsback to attend the Rallye Raid, an event organised by Mike Glover from Red Cherry Adventures. Usually it's in May, but Covid screwed that up. 4 of us set off from JHB, my boet was going to ride up from PE and meet us in Mt Fletcher. We departed Tuesday after meeting at the BP at Beyers, and first stop was Clarens for some grub and a beer to calm our nerves!!

Here is the GS at Beyers packed and ready. Our group comprised Lourens on a 1290, Richard and Allan on 1090's, and me on the Beemer. I took a lot of flak from the KTM boys!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200905/e8c25d8925d44fdacd407678fe51cac8.jpg)

Given that we'd been on the black stuff for a bit and were desperate for a bit of gravel, we headed back towards Bethlehem, but jinked onto a small district road that took us around the mountains north of Clarens and spat us out just below Golden Gate. Here we rejoined the tar, and continued towards Bergville Kzn.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200905/93ea20d716a0835250f021b379f15fcf.jpg)

Just outside Bergville we swerved off to a lekker road that was a combo of dirt and gravel towards Rosetta where we would join the main drag to Notties. Road was nice, and we soon passed White Mountain Resort. We were hoping for a quick beer here but they were closed, so we meandered on. We followed this road towards Rosetta, it was a beautiful twisty,  windy road that took us into an awesome slice of rural SA. Of course an obligatory stop for a refreshment was made. After all biking is hard work, and we did not want to dehydrate.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/e7168d8d7be8a93856ad96874063f74c.jpg)

Our digs for the night was the Notties Hotel, first time I've stayed over and it's well worth a visit, the rooms were comfy, and the grub good. As is the norm, the first night on tour always gets a bit rowdy, and I found myself saying...."make it a double" too many times!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/bf432d8142f666fbce88339f597a5bf6.jpg)

Wednesday dawned and another awesome day awaited, it was chilly, with the max for the day predicted at about 11 degrees. The plan was to take the Lower Loteni Rd to Underberg, then some tar to Swartberg, and the back on dirt to Matat. This remains one of my favourite bits of road, and we set off like kids going to a playpark(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/906d9742292b1dfd03bb9fe706f3c8e7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/1722df5f85bc58c432fe4859b120f741.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/7439f89911e6597642eab3a8f3b948d5.jpg)

Underberg arrived with everyone a little chilly but in good nick. A quick fuel stop and a chat to the locals who informed us that the Himeville Arms had closed down. If this is true then it is indeed a sad day as the H Arms has always been an iconic stop over point for anyone travelling in the area.

We trundled on towards Kokstad but about 30 k's out of town had a near miss with an overloaded bantam bakkie that had a rear tyre blowout just as we were lining up to pass it. It was filled to the brim with 5 litre containers of traditional  beer and slid all over the road doing a full 360 before ending up in the gutter. Luckily none of us got caught up in it and we pressed on hitting the dirt again at Swartberg. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/7f09e06a2cea8cb5ac544aaa747baa71.jpg)

The section of gravel from Swartberg to Matat was not kind to us, with me getting a nice ding on my from rim. Luckily it continued to hold air, however Richards rear shock on the 1090 started leaking oil. We limped into Matat and stopped at the Steers for some grub. By now the "I'll have another Double" from the night before was also catching up to us. Anyway luckily it was Wacky Wednesday, nothing like a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake to pep you up!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/24d32487ea1bc71f2cd3c8f1d05cf31c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200906/f0d10cfad844039fa400e8ab375b1ce3.jpg)

Sorry guys work got in the way of completing this one. In Matat Richard spent some time on the phone trying to find a spare shock somewhere. No Luck!! Only option was a shock kit from JHB but that was not going to help. Consensus was that we just press on to Hogs, and see how it lasted. From Matat to Mt Fletcher was a tar section, and we arrived 30 mins later to find my boet Pete waiting for us at the only site in town, the local Caltex. We stopped for a 5 min leg stretch then hit the road. The weather looked bleak, and Rhodes (beers) beckoned.

Just outside Mt Fletcher it was gravel time again, as we took a beautiful road that would lead us to the McClear/Rhodes route. It was a pretty road meandering through the mountains and awesome farmland.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/e37c7462eb19278d88ea62915b57ddd7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/2a267021b74edbe1a3e4c35e3ab0cd08.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/55c99cd4c513834ea152982d7ea65a67.jpg)

We soon intersected the McClear/Rhodes road which was in the process of being re-surfaced in some areas. There were some nice marbles in places, but the road was in good nick as we headed for Naudes Nek. Peter had come over from Rhodes that morning to meet us in Mt Mt Fletcher and encountered thick mist and rain so we knew what expect. As usual the scenery did not disappoint.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/9baa24d97d3d2e5196089c7226af5991.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/587d8f30f87ce864119148949df1dfcd.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/e0d79f90c4019c32e7a9684427121d46.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/aaf5e81f41a58d30f58469eff9206432.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/113407be9d64e94253bfd813a68b8c65.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/a65779eb3035019ee91b9beb4d051bb0.jpg)

At the top of Naudes Nek is the turn to Tennahead Lodge. It was pretty cold by now, but "what the hell" we thought.  Time for a beer! We swerved off and headed for the lodge. It was deserted and only the lodge manageress was there. Anyway we forced a quick Zamalek down, and hit the road back to the crest of the pass.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/0cef5de55127ab315fe1c1cb0f636fdc.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/d264adb7cf7418d067bdc400caa7712c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/c493b7b459c939c4eb568cf0d3b3da0f.jpg)

By now in the space of an hour, the fog has set in again, and by the time we got to the main road the visibility was down to about 15 meters! Anyway we set off with hazards on in the direction of Rhodes. As soon as we'd descended a bit it cleared up and soon we were blazing along to Rhodes.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/13ec8a255d6da251f115dbe825685dd5.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/27eac0a0155d7f74dc6e7cf2c16956ce.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/102e1b6cb4d17509a813e7d1fab0d1f8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/6321a94abef3f2bb65f916285b1ac97d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200920/96c7846885cb1c8762cd1d880552300f.jpg)

Beautiful part of the world!

We were booked for two nights at Himeville arms in October last year, and on arrival the place looked terribly neglected, so we were quite happy when the manager told us that their waterpump is broken, and that we've been given place at the resort at the foot of Sani.

Sad to hear that it is now closed down, as I remember one of the best meals ever eaten at the HA about ten years ago.

Himeville Arms was a popular stay-over about 12 years ago when I still resided on the South Coast and many locals frequented the pub at night for something to eat and drink
I often slept over when working in that area. The accommodation was basic but clean.
I later got info that the place was not recommended anymore as a stay-over.
I hope someone buys the place and put it back on the map.

I stayed there in August last year on a trip over Sani with Swambo and it had gone to pot then already.
