Title: Re: We rode up Penge Pass.....and then some
Post by: Noneking on October 11, 2020, 01:39:26 pm
But let's start at the beginning.......

About three weeks ago, @Just Blip It! , Henry and myself set out to do some riding in Lekgalameetsi. Link to that RR - http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=251617.0

The plan was to ride Penge Pass,  the lesser known "Pass with no Name" and a few others to complete a loop. Most of these tracks were generously supplied by @Xpat - thank you Martin!

Things did not go according to plan - emergency repair to a holed radiator on Henry's 990, and shortly after  a puncture on Mark's 990. Unsure just how effective the repair on Henry's bike would be and unsure whether we would have sufficient time to complete the loop, we decided to play it safe and change our route accordingly. We ended up only riding Pass With No Name and a few other on route there. We vowed to go back as soon as possible to ride up the elusive Penge Pass.

Fast forward three weeks - Mark phoned me up and invited me along on another shot at Penge, I hastily cleared my diary and a week later met up with Mark and Japie in White River to start the trip. It was a beautiful morning in the Loweld and I was up early to get ready and I parked the 790 in the driveway - a few minutes later heard frantic screaming outside. Our neighbour was trying to prevent a giraffe from    "mounting" my bike...... I had to place a folded bike ramp in the drieway, which the bull kicked over to his very clear delight.

As with most of Mark's trips, the offroad riding starts just after you get on your bike. Most of the initial 45 min of riding was on familiar tracks that I've posted about before.

Our route for the day would take us along a few familiar but also plenty of “new to me” tracks. It wasn’t long before it became clear that Penge Pass would not be the only challenge on this trip......

Well done!  :thumleft:

I was also riding in that area (not Lekgalameetse - about 20 km west as the crow flies) and was pretty sure that you guys have no chance to do the full route (including that side dash up OB pass) in that heat. I was struggling in the sand and was little worried that you guys may overcook it on those passes which are very exposed to sun. But you are clearly made of stronger stuff than me...

On another note - I found another pass for you lot. It is in the mountain range just to the west of Legkalameetse (didn't check the name if there is any - I dubbed it Little Kaokoland as it reminds me the northern sections around VZP and Red Drum Pass) and shows some great promise (and can be combined with the passes in Legkalameetse). I will elaborate in my thread, but here is a teaser:

Martin, make no mistake, we were all three knackered by the time we got to Ofcalaco. It was a tough day of riding. Nearly 11 hours from when we left Bush Pub in the morning untill our return that night

Sounds great!
Will follow in your thread

We begrudgingly took on the 110 km on tar to Ofcalaco where we would fill up with fuel before entering Lekgalameetsi.

It was already hot and humid when we reached Ofcalaco and to make things worse, Mark’s rear tyre was flat.......

We eventually entered Lekgalameetsi and started to tackle our route of 3 weeks ago in the opposite direction.

It soon became clear that we were not going to just quickly climb out of that valley on our way to go and ride Penge Pass. It was extremely slippery under foot after some good rain in the week leading up to our trip and even the slightest climb on the wet rocks exposed the only real weakness of out MotoZ rear tyres - traction on wet surfaces.

We were 45 minutes into the ride in Lekgalameetsi, had barely done a couple km in the valley and we were sitting next to our bikes, completely drained after pushing and pulling the bikes up some very average climbs and a monster  climb with very little traction. In fact, I remember coming down that very same section on our previous trip and hearing Mark comment in the headset that he would love to come ride up this hectic descent....

We ate some of snacks, drank some water and made our way out of the valley. From this point the climbs were still quite steep, but no more wet rocks meant we had proper traction and we were able manage good pace on The Pass With No Name

The rest of the pass had clearly been washed away quite a bit by the recent rains, but we managed to get to the bottom in one piece, making up for some lost time in the process

On a technical descent on the pass just before Penge, Mark was running his bike down against compression on a tricky section. When he tried to start the bike, the battery was dead. I had visions of recovery vehicles coming to the nearest access point from the pass and us planning another weekend to ride Penge....The two clever guys in the group assessed the problem and proceeded to get the bike running with jumper cables. I on the other hand, looked for the only spot of shade in the 34deg heat. Lets just say that my function in this group remains uncertain

By the time we reached the town of Penge, it was past midday, extremely hot and I was already down to less than a litre of water from the 3 litres I started with. We stopped at the local shop. Bought ice and water and shared a 2 litre bottle of coke.

Back on our bikes, I could feel the butterflies in my stomach. I’m always nervous before a serious ride, even more so given what has been said and written about Penge Pass. Apart from a few pics and descriptions from Xpat’s reports, I had no idea what to expect, other than the hellish climbs I imagined in moments of self doubt........

We crossed the stream and soon after, things got real very quickly......

We didn’t stop much on our ride of the pass so my pics are mostly screen grabs of the video I took. I don’t think either do it justice. The pass is relentless........ it jus doesn’t let go. Constant climbing over loose rocks to get to the top. A switchback every now and then, mostly with a step up or soccer ball sized rock on outside of the turn to keep you on your toes. As you start descending you’d could be forgiven for  thinking  that things would ease up a bit

Japie and I stopped at the bottom of the climb before the last switchback to allow ourselves a clean run when Mark gets to the top. Mark seemed to have a good run (no surprises there, very little that he won’t get through or over on that 990) to the top and parked his bike to come and film us and take a few pics

This was the only part of Penge that had all three of us with our feet off the pegs to stay upright. Both Japie and I dropped our bikes navigating our way to that steep climb just before the switch back.

I was really angry at myself for dropping my bike on the final turn off the pass.

To be honest, This has to be one of the toughest rides I’ve done. Mark and Japie were of the same opinion. It’s not that Penge Pass is extremely technical,  All 3 of us felt that we had seen a lot worse, but it just NEVER lets up!  Penge gets hold of you and doesn’t let go until you crest that final climb. I’m sure that if you were to lose momentum on a big bike and come to a stop on one of those steep climbs, it would be a very big challenge to get going again.

Add to all of this a tough morning to even get to the pass and you’d think that we would have a big celebration and call it a day after reaching the end of the pass.......

Noneking, awesome ride! What mode did you ride in, do you find the traction control helping slippage on the steep terrain?

Nicely Done ,That pass is actually a very nice and scenic route on smaller 650 class bikes  :thumleft:  On a 500 or such it will be an absolute jol  :thumleft:

My bike is always in Rally mode, throttle on street setting and I manage the slip on the fly. Lately slip has moslty been on 1 as I feel that me having the slip on 5 was part of the issue I had with my clutch springs on a ride with long rocky climbs before.  For Penge (actually most of the weekend's riding)  I took the slip control down to 1 which is obviously least intervention. My experience with slip control as been that I prefer being in control with clutch and throttle on gnarly climbs

I'm sure it would be, but the 500 would have a tough time doing the 150km odd to get to the pass  >:D >:D

I'm enjoying the challenges on the bigger bikes. I'm sure that as I get older, I will have to scale down and eventually end up on a much smaller bike if I want to continue riding, but here's to hoping that's still a long way off...... :ricky: :ricky: :ricky:

Before buying one, this looked like a real benefit, but I guess to be fair this is then possibly not the feature it intends to be. In it current configuration the bike is probably better of without traction control as it is intended to be a technical biased adv bike. It will be interesting to see if the 890 clutch is interchangeable.

Really amped to try this route!

Where it realy does shine for for me, is on fast flowing sections where you can just pin the throttle and concentrate on steering and weight distribution. I can often see Mark's 990 squirming under him as he fights the rear wheel breaking away while at the same time, under hard acceleration the 790 is perfectly stable. This function I believe has made me a better rider as I'm now completely comfortable on the bike and I've slowly started to dial down slip control to where I'm happy to hang the arse out with the throttle pinned while chasing that mad route master  >:D >:D

As usual, Mark had an ace up his sleeve....... “We’re just quickly going to ride this nice little short pass that Martin ( @Xpat ) sent me”.......

I looked at my watch and was concerned about getting to the Lekgalameetsi gate in time. Mark wasn’t worried and off we went........

It started out fairly tame.

I called it OB side entry as the matter of speaking as that is what it kind of is. I doubt it has any official name.

If you want to make a mark in the history, this area gives you some opportunities to name routes / passes. For example 'Penge pass' was I believe named by Jacques 'Livingstone' Sidetrack.  O0

Come on Jacques - don't get greedy. That one is fully tractable on googlemaps, I have ridden it a year ago when I was just following Minxy's tracks (  @Minxy ). So if anything it should be called Minxy pass. BTW it is an easy dirt road, but very scenic so if you ar gunning it back to GP from Lekgalameetse, highly recommended.

And BTW, that whole mountain range I just called on FB ' Little Kaokoland' (yes way too unironic, but fitting IMO). I have been exploring there on Sunday before I got chased away by rain, and it is goldmine to be discovered. I will post pictures this week in my thread (I already posted on earlier in this one as a teaser).

That is the spot where I turned back last time after I found my swingarm has big crack. So I haven't seen the rest of the track to the tar and I hope it is pretty rough, because if not then I should have just pushed on last time and finish it... ;)

The rest of the ride was done at pace to make it to the gate before it closed. Scenery was still spectacular

Back at Ofcalaco we had a fantastic Peppersteak pie and a fizzy drink to wash it down. Tyres were inflated and we dressed for the trip to Hoedspruit into a strong headwind.

Back at our digs, we showered and went to the pub for a great Eisbein and a couple of beers. We were in bed shortly after eight with tired bodies.

It rained throughout the night and the next morning a decision was made to cancel out technical ride home and take R40 back home.

We were packed and ready to ride at 7am and it started pouring down 5 minutes into our ride and dis not stop until we reached Hazyview where we stopped for a quick coffee. Temp never went above 10 degrees celsius.  All 3 of us were drenched and shivering uncontrollably.  I was home just after 9, still shivering and unable to use my frozen hands.

What a privilege to ride with these two. Both very skilled riders who have been mates for years and riding buddies for just as long.

I learn so much  from watching guys like them ride and appreciate all their words of encouragement and praise and their helping hands when I fall over or get stuck.

My Gopro footage of the pass

I live on a street named Penge, so Penge Pass has always been there, snarling at me in the back of my mind... sort of compulsory riding... thanx for dangling the carrot a little closer to my nose.

The rest of the pass had clearly been washed away quite a bit by the recent rains, but we managed to get to the bottom in one piece, making up for some lost time in the process

Awesome stuff. You people really go to the exstreme. A Question for Japie. Do you trailer the bike to nelspruit when you go ride there or ride from Spring to nelspruit, and then still ride around there and then back again. Awesome skills from all of you

I fell about every 200m there on the pass just after you cross the big bridge over the river. If it was not for the encouragement of a fellow rider i would not have made it. Really tough, and i though i could pillion up there with my son on the back. Yet it seemed so easy for the others
