Title: Three Weeks and 6300km Around SA on my Bike
Post by: Mother on October 20, 2020, 12:51:13 pm
Hi Fellow Dogs
I posted a lot of my trip on FB WD page as it happened........here is the after the event post with more or less route taken on google maps and perhaps a little more detail for those interested  :sip:

Thanks to Covids impact on the our Hospitality Business I had some time on my hands to do a nice trip around the country......In the interest of preserving ones marriage my wife was on the same page to let me go do what i love........

The West Coast sand road always had me curious and with some info in Hand from ChrisL on the forum I decided it was going to be on my todo list but first the Tankwa

Anyway i set out after the long weekend and the rains from Cape Town on a lovely clear day.....took all the back roads and i really had a more of less plan for the first few days nothing else......just My GSA ,all my kit to be self sufficient and a set of new TKC80 the open road and my map was going to lead me where ever the road decided.......

I felt the Tankwa Karoo might be a good starting point so i took the dirt road to Gouda then on to Ceres on the tar road towards Touws river but on the top of the mountain i turned left to take the little dirt road shown on Tracks for Africa map .....to come in on the Ceres Calvinia road through the Kareekloof Conservancy

This section was fairly hectic washed away two spoor road and i had to open and close a few farm gates........but it was early into my trip and first day fever i eagerly rose to the challenge of this technical section.

By the time i got to the R355 to Calvinia i was eager to stop at the Padstal for a bite and refreshment...... this is always a good stop
after letting my wife know i was still alive i set off for the Tankwa tented Camp site for the evening.

Must admit my first impression of camping in the dust and sand in my own tent , wasn't good , so i opted for one of the ready made tent sites and this was a good call.

I went into the bar and there where a few people around......amazing how in a place like this like minded we start chatting......all of us initially strangers experienced the tie celebration with Deon the manager in appreciation of nature and the closing of the day with the sunset at the top of the look out......what really hit home for me was he gave us all stones representing 10 years of life .....each and everyone got 8 stones cause it  seems apparently anything after 80 is bonus.........when he asked us to throw away stones representing how far we come in life.........the realisation of me only having two stones left ......left me with some really big questions to myself about really making a point of enjoying my time now..... :deal:

anyway the drinks started flowing and soon i left the deep stuff for another day...

Small world when I realized one of my new friends Willem Rudolf  had grown up in my home town of Winklespruit on the Natal south coast around the same time period.....we both ride GSA 1250......like a brother from another mother hehehe......we laughed and joked about all the stuff we got up to in that neck of the woods as kids....real blast from the past
Any way i saw the party was going to get hectic and like a responsible adult i eventually left for bed  :ricky:

After spending some time at the Africa Burn Labyrinth site I headed out to Niewoudsville via some of the sand track back roads using the Tracks for Africa Map and my Gps had to open a gate or two on this section and in some places it was nice and sandy.....but most of the day was peaceful with not a soal in sight.....I thought of heading down to the west coast after having a bite to eat at  Bagdad Cafe on the R27 but they were closed and i had to settle for tarts and a pie at the Tuinuiwerhied store in Vanrynsdorp.....

The plan was to find the spot mentioned by ChrisL to camp on the beach near Brand se Baai other side of Koekenaap

There seems to be much mining activity happening on the coastal road I later heard from one of the civil guys that an Australian company is recycling the red beach sand to extract minerals apparently zircon and some others.......so they are making new accessible roads to the mine

Here and there the road got a bit sandy on the beach section but eventually i found a place where i saw some  folks camping .......still to this day not sure of the places name but there were stones stacked to make camping spots......no working ablutions but i was completely self sufficient with enough water and food to wild camp next to the beach

And so i hankered down for the night.......camping on the beach has to be my favourite things also watching the sun set over the ocean definitely a highlight......photos dont really cover the experience

Ok after Dorsland distraction........ :laughing4:

After going down the beach road some way i saw a spot where other folk were camping and decided to pull in and set up for the night......on asking the elderly couple next to me they said it was a free camp site.....i didnt ask any more questions and set up my tent......sure that this was the place Chris L had spoken of........it was a nice spot anyway and far enough from civilisation for me to sleep like a baby that night

Well i did get told by ChrisL that parts of this road will turn sandy so its not like i wasnt expecting it.......the next morning bright and fresh i took on some of the sandy sections before the Mine and even after going around the salt pan to eventually get to Lepelfontein i had a lot patches of sand that had me and the GS a bit all over the place.....I did make a mental note to put on fresh undies when i got to Hondeklipbaai that night

After passing the Mine at Brand Se Baai there is a main dirt road leading to a Salt Pan and Salt mining operation ........i was thinking wow now I'm out of the sandy part and can get my speed up a bit...............no such luck soon after passing the salt mine the road turned again into a two spoor beach sand road......i thought to myself............myself what the %&%# are you doing here  :laughing4:  :laughing4:

anyway as my nature would have it i pressed on and a couple more gates the road and sand continued on forever............later on after Lepelsfontien and the more i headed towards Garies the ground got more compact and there was less sand to ride on....at least i could maintain a nice pace to Hondeklipbaai

After wild beach Camping near Brand se Baai and especially after the hectic sandy roads i decided to enjoy an up market glamping experience at Die Baai se Bek it was really good to have a nice shower and a decent meal one tends to appreciate these things when you been eating dust a bit

Also decided to take a rest day and chill out as i was in no rush to go anywhere

Soon found out the place to go was the liquor store by the beach ....the owner is also the towns butcher so beer wood ice and meat all the same place

Have been to this little town many times over the years and find because of its remoteness it is quiet relaxing here.......dirt roads in and dirt roads out

..sure that this was the place Chris L had spoken of.

You have found Gert du Toit se Baai. :thumleft:
Damn but you took a long detour from Gamoep!!! You should have turned left out of "town" and firts road right. You would have T'ed the Springbok -Pofadder tar road just after Aggeneys. Guess you wanted to do the longest straight piece of dirt in SA, think it is 76 kms between Kliprand and Poadder. Straight as a ruler.

After my rest day in Hondeklipbaai i packed and set out towards Kamieskroon it was overcast and soon started to drizzle .......about 20km in i took the dirt road left following the map for africa tracks......it wasn't long and the rain came down in buckets......and there after sections of the roads became slick with mud......
i must confess I'm not very good in mud and what ever technique i apply inevitably i hit the deck at some point.......luckily i could definitely feel the TKC were giving me some stability in the thick stuff.
i was glad i had caught the rain early in that i had put on my rain suit......because the rain just kept coming down........my biggest problem was seeing where i was going as glasses and a visor and rain dont mix well....

eventually i got to Kamieskroon and pulled into one of the Restuarants it was full with bus load of elderly Tourists who probably came to look at the flowers.......they must of thought i was an alien coming in out of the rain covered in mud and wet........no one said a thing as i went and sat quietly in the corner and ordered breakfast and a cup of coffee....

Post by: Mother on October 21, 2020, 08:03:02 am
My main plan at this point was to reach Klein Pella just north of Pofadder there was something about this place that intrigued me I had never been to Pella ...always drive or ride past......it was a post i had seen that someone shared some time ago........

When i started out from Hondeklipbaai my intention was to follow as many of the dirt tracks on the map as possible ........but after the mornings mud episodes i was wondering if i shouldn't woes out and take the tar to Springbok and go that way around........

Its amazing what a nice breakfast and a warm cup of coffee can do to your mental state..........i told myself................myself don't be a pissy keep going on the dirt roads .....they will eventually dry out.......this is semi desert country and probably has the lowest rainfall in SA.......what could go wrong.....

Anyway i was very glad i stuck to my decision to keep going.......although still muddy the road wound through the mountains and the views were breathtaking........I took the direction to Gamoep....it wasnt long and the roads dried and so did the rain......it remained overcast.......but the road was scenic and beautiful.....i was glad i had stuck to my guns about continuing on the dirt

At the T junction near Gamoep was what looked like the main dirt road the R355.... i was initially hoping to find tracks off this road but because the going was slow and i really wanted to get to Klein Pella i opted to take the faster/drier R355 south to Loeriesfontien or Kliprand then turn left or north again on the R358 to Pofadder........

on there section i was able to make up some good time to Pofadder......and by late afternoon around 5pm i arrived in Klein Pella......nearly 500km mostly dirt mud roads for the day

Once i got to the R355 and R358 the road was dry and i could pick up the pace to Pofadder

As i found out Klein Pella is the largest Date Farm in the Southern Hemisphere on the Farm is lodging and Camp grounds and it is one of the starting points of the Namaqua 4x4 route
due to Covid they were only running the camp ground....
i chose a spot on the lush green grass with a beautiful view of the mountains.......camping was cheap R115 per night so i decided to stay two and check out the farm also the Orange river close by and just relax in the beautiful enviroment

on the rest day took a ride down to the Orange in my shorts and T and ended up doing a bit of a hectic two spoor to get to a private section of river ......there I took a swim......it was great and although cool....was a nice refreshing experience after the sweating outside temp.....
was a great place to have a bit of time out alone

After the rest day left Klein Pella wanted to go to Riemvasmaak just outside Kakamas

first stop was to see the actual town of Pella.....there wasnt much there besides a quaint little church at least i can tick it off my list of places to see
Title: Re: Three Weeks and 6300km Around SA on my Bike
Post by: Mother on October 21, 2020, 09:30:17 am
After checking out the town of Pella i made my way back to Pofadder and had some fresh pies that the cafe owner had just baked......it was awesome after the past two days of noodles, sardines and water and coffee i had been living on,,,, as Klein Pella has no shop.....fortunately as i said earlier i was kitted out self sufficiently with my own supply of basic food and water

In Kakamas i stopped at the Pienkpadstal as i have done numerous times over the years of travel.....and the same lady still owns the place......she was the one who many years ago suggested camping at Riemvasmaak hot spring.......and that was a great experience back then......anyway this time she mentioned that the locals were having issues with local government so it was best to avoid the area this time........however she suggested i check out a place called Khamkirri on the banks of the Orange........I was glad i followed her advice

The road to Khamkirri camp was in hectic condition with corrugations and sand but the camp site was worth the ride and the people very hospitable and friendly........

As i got there early i was able to set up camp ....arrange some refreshments and go for a first time canoe on the Orange organised with a cooler of beers and ice........life was good at Khamkirri
even managed a meat pack for a braai that evening........the people at the camp really treated me well and i really enjoyed my stay there

After Khamkirri decided to go north as I hadn't been to Askham Vanzylsrus or Hotazel since doing the old Desert runs..... so i thought i would go check out these towns.......I knew at some point i would have to make Pretoria to service my bike for it to remain in warranty......it was fast approaching 20000 km ..... Askham to me was a good turning point to Pretoria where i would book my bike in at my friends dealership........also where i had bought the bike initially .........have always had great service from Bavaria

From Kakamas headed to Upington....there was a guy selling hotdogs on the road so decided to support him fro breakfast.......my bikes battery fob was playing up and needed to be replaced so i popped in to BMW Uppington only to discover the bike dealership is no longer.......shows you how long ago i was in Upington

From Upington pushed on to Askham and this was now a lovely quiet tar road...........

Got to Askham around 3.30 and decided to look for a place to camp for the night.......found a nice little camp spot in "Kalahari Camelthorn caravanpark and guest house" in the little town......was able to get refreshments from the little trading store..........when i started my bike after stopping at the store ....a warning light came on and said i needed to get to the dealership.......the bike was performing fine .......so i called the dealership to book my bike in in two days time......they told me nothing to stress about

I was warned the 150 km dirt from Askham to Vanzylsrus was a nasty piece of work.........but hey what do you do.....

During the night in Askham of all places it rained and stormed through the night.......luckily i had taken the time to put up my tent properly with the cover and wetness was kept to a minimum........but trues bob something or some gogga must have got in my clothes and i was full of bite marks...... i couldn't stop itching......it drove me nuts

By 8am there was a break in the drizzle and i was able to break camp.......by the time i was ready to leave there was a steady drizzle again

Not far out of Askham the rain stopped and the skies opened up.........the road got more and more corrugated and it just didn't let up no matter which side i rode on........i watched my gps slowly tick down the 150km to Vanzylsrus.....this road was painful to say the least..........10km to go i thought ...yay not too far now and then the sand got sandier and zigzagged all over the place.....

The last 10km ended up being the most painful and shittist for me........
i was glad to eventually get to Vanzylsrus......and the hotel was a welcome break for breakfast and refreshments.........the bonus was when they told me the dirt road to Hotazel was now tar........i was going to enjoy that break in the dirt big time........

Needless to say the Tar from Vanzylsrus to Hotazel was a welcome relief.......I stopped at Hotazel to check out the little town.....it had changed a lot from the dirt road town i had known years back and now turned into a serious mining community reminded me of the ugly Kathu mining town......and from here there were loads of mine trucks all the way to Kuruman......

Now Kuruman has become a bit of a s$%&  hole .......i couldn't wait to get through there fast enough............

a few km outside Kuruman i took a right to make my way through the back dirt roads to Jan Kempdorp where after a long day in the saddle i booked into the local lodge to overnight......450km day

After being well rested at Jan Kempdorp lodge... the main reason for me coming down south was to go past Klerksdorp to see an old friend of mine from the Africa Twin days ...Kelly Farrel

Kelly is 77 and still riding his bikes especially his GS 1150  on dirt roads around the country......

I met Kelly many years ago through the Africa Twin group and we had still managed to stay in touch over the years.......we once did a trip together to Lusaka to go see the total eclipse of the sun.....that was 2001 and I was on my Africa Twin ....Kelly and his mate Herman were on BMW GS and this was where i got the opportunity to ride the beemer........it was a defining moment  O0

and i have always had one since then  :dousing:

Wat a true gentleman!!!. Have ridden with him in 1999 for the first time and we still keep in touch!! :thumleft: :thumleft:

On the 2000 D Run he dumps his twin between Hotazel and Van Zylsrus. I stop to hear if he is ok and ask what happen? His answer "i dunno what happened but I better find out cause i can't be doing this often it hurts"!!!! :lol8: :lol8:

After Saying Hi in Klerksdorp I headed out to Johannesburg to pop in at my dad who has retired there....before making my way up to Pretoria for a few days R&R staying with my Mate Shaun and also getting to see my Daughter.......The plan was also to get my Bike Serviced and the fault attended to....

Thankfully I managed to get all my kit washed to make sure no more bugbites....... Also thanks Charlene and Nicola for the anti itch medication......

the few days i spent in Pretoria were a nice break to the journey and it was good to see my friends and family

On the way up I rode right past my old army base in Potch and couldnt resist stopping to go check it out.........I used to be an OPs Medic when doing National service....the base Klipdrift was now an artillery training camp.... I met a PF Major out by the gate and he and i had a good chat about life in general .......it was a pleasant chance meeting to reminisce about days gone by 41 years ago

While in Bavaria Shaun and I got the chance to go see the BMW cruiser in the basement

I left Pretoria bright and early back road to Bronkhorstspruit .......was always curious about the Temple near the town so took a closer look turns out it is a Buddist Temple

After this headed up to Groblersdal then Marble Hall.......near Roetan there was a bikers rally of some sorts in the middle of no where lots of bikers all sorts in the little town of Roetan

from here it was dodging potholes to Zebedelia and then the outskirts of Polokwane and I made my way towards Tzaneen........

Polokwane to Moria is a really kak piece of road even if its double lane the locals drive like its a race track.....However i really enjoyed the pass after Moria ZCC to Haenertsburg.......what a pretty little town....saw a few other dual purpose bikers around and met a friendly uncle while taking pictures who recommended i go up the dirt road to the cemetery to see the views.....it was good advice and i enjoyed the peace and quiet overlooking the town ......also the walk amongst those in their final resting place was a somber experience....

After Haenertsburg it was a short ride to Magoebas kloof Lodge where i decided to camp for the evening

on the tyre issue it must be noted that i seldom went over 120km (gps speed) this was also to preserve the tyres for the duration of my trip   :o :ricky:

ok lets go on........

Magoebaskloof Camping.....a night to remember :-\  :'(  O0

Well true to form as the ladies in reception warned me the Matrics came back to after party and that continued until late into the night........

But just as i was going into dream land it started raining.......and not just a bit ........hard rain with thunder and lightning .........here i was in my little tent........wondering why just why did i not fasten down the fly sheet properly .........maybe it was the deception of the blue skies earlier the afternoon.........lazy.........or just being in the comfort zone...........

trust me it was a long night.......where ever my kit touched the side of the tent it was wet .........i barely fit in my tent head to toe.....so opted that my feet rather get wet

when i eventualy got up in the morning from broken sleep there wasn't much that was dry

and putting on a wet twat suit wasnt fun....... :xxbah: :3some:

i was marginally pissed at myself for putting up my tent half hearted the previous day........i paid the price :eek7: :o :xxbah:

packing up in the rain and mud was not fun but it was a process i had to do

i put my rain coat on under my kit in the hope the weather would turn........but it didnt.......in fact later it just bucketed down till around Ofcolaco....by then i was soaked through

riding past the villages and taxis outsside of Tzaneen was challenging with wet glasses and visor too

with everything wet i knew i wasnt going to ride like this all day and i needed a place to dry out

Haven't been to Bylde river Canyon.....have always blasted past.....ok i been to the top of Mariepskop but this time i decided to head for the Forever Resort of Bylde River Canyon

it was a good call....

the ride from Ofcolaco to Blyde River Canyon was intermittent rain.......
I remember the guy at reception doing the Covid temp test on me and all it showed was Low ......

the water was pouring off me as i filled in their forms to get a Chalet......they must have also felt sorry for me because they gave me a generous discount  :ricky:

although a shortish day i was relieved to get out of the rain into a Chalet........life began to feel normal again
Title: Re: Three Weeks and 6300km Around SA on my Bike
Post by: Mother on October 22, 2020, 09:09:30 am
There is something about a warm place to stay and a shower after being wet to the bone.......
i really enjoyed having the Chalet to myself
hung all my stuff up to dry even got some groceries from the litte shop in the resort to make an awesome curry and rice

life was good........and i decided to stay an extra day to wait the rain out......and get my kit 100% dry

Blyde River Rest Day

after the previous days rain it was overcast and i took the opportunity to go look at the Canyon and Pilgrims rest as well as the Bourkes luck pot holes

for most of the day the clouds were low so the Canyon had limited views .....the rain held out most of the day and i didn't get too wet doing a bit of sight seeing

what was very notable was the lack of people/tourists but i presume Covid and the weather were the main reasons

it was nice to not be crowded with other folks and the roads were fairly quiet

rest day was good to get the batteries charged again

The high light of this days ride was the beautiful twisty roads through the forrests
the views and vistas just breathtaking......

I basically rode all day enjoying the route i had taken and stopping here and there for a few pictures along the way.......

it really was very scenic and the fact that i had not ridden some of these roads really made for an enjoyable experience.......

my bike was purring along as if it was right in its happy zone......it was a great day to be out riding.....

my route was the following: Blyde Sabie Nelspruit Barberton Badplaas Lochiel Amsterdam Piet Retief Paulpietersburg and then dodging potholes came between Vryheid and Dundee

I found a brilliant place to stay just before Dundee called the Battlefields Lodge and a room was cheap for R449.00.......was a nice long day over 500km

went to take a pic at the clear Canyons and Gods Window

The next section of my trip was this Route ....firstly down towards Durbs via Tugela Ferry and Greytown actually Bothas Hill where my Uncle stays....I spent the night visiting with him and we went out for a few beers and dinner at n Irish pub in Hillcrest....it was great catching up with him after many years

The following day from Bothas Hill right where the Comrades Marathon is run I headed out towards Kokstad via Richmond Ixopo and Umzimkulu.......at this stage was unsure if i wanted to go Matatiele or N2 down towards PE....It was only at Kokstad that I decided to do the N2 as i had travelled this road the least.......also I was now on the home run.. O0

In Butterworth it was getting lateso i looked at the map and decided to head for the coast at Trennerys on the Qolora river mouth......a quick call they were open and for R795.00 i could enjoy Dinner Bead and Breakfast........I had been here many many years ago and decided this was a good deal and a good place to settle for the night..........

Truth be told I had not the energy to put up my tent and on the final stretches to home Glamping became my choice option  :lol8: :sip:

Ok finally getting there......

This was my Route Home from Trennerys across the Kei River with the Pontoon then up to the N2..... popped in at PE to meet up with my Mate Gavin for a quick bite and then after lunch hit the road down the coast......

At this time the wind was pumping and really becoming unpleasant so other side of Humansdorp I decided to cut inland using the R62 and Langkloof to Kareedouw Joubertina and made my way to Oudshoorn for the overnight at Klein Plasie......much better call ......very scenic and no wind .......this day was over 700km ....by now i was wanting to get home to enjoy some creature comforts of my own home

finally on Saturday I did the last 400 or so km home on the Route 62

When i pulled into my drive way had done nearly 6300 km in 3 weeks........ it was a great trip but it was also good to be home

Hope you enjoyed the RR

Cheers M

Thanks, Mother, what an awesoem ride-along. Did you plan routes? Toss a coin when you got to an intersection? Or just ride with an idea of where you want to end for the day? I assume also you did not book any accommodation beforehand?

Thanks again for sharing!

 :thumleft:

mostly i would look at my map a day or so before........i more or less wanted to go around the country to see places i hadn't seen for years or not at all.......most of all i wanted to enjoy my ride

where exactly i ended up for the night was  random.......i never booked other than to call like Trennerys to see if they were open and rates ..... because i didn't want to do the hectic ride to the coast and find them closed because of Covid........I called them from Butterworth only when it was getting time to decide where to crash for the night......the other place i called as i got to their sign saying closed was Klein Pella........i didn't want to waste doing a 50km gravel return trip......luckily they were open for camping only R115 per day bargain
everywhere else i just rocked up and negotiated a place to stay
even when picking a route i would change my mind based on time where i was

i packed to be self sufficient ie tyre repair pump food water tools washing power for clothes.......
but the thing in SA is you are never too far from civilization either
at Klein Pella no shops so i was able to eat and drink my own supplies for two days...

thats what made my trip so nice was that it wasn't too planned

if the road was too shitty i would slow the pace or take an alternative this also contributed to where i got for the day or where i slept

Fantastic trip you did Mother.
May I ask, you've just been around South Africa. Any particular region like ie. Northern Cape etc that you prefer. Things like the people, the hospitality, the vibe, scenery, climate etc.. Please say why if you like a particular area?

Thanks!

Hi Rex Thank you

All the people i found helpful and friendly......perhaps i was lucky or its the peoples way when you are a lone biker.....a lot were curious as to why so far ...why alone...etc

The eastern part of the country is exceptionally beautiful but busy with lots of places and people......was very fortunate being there mid week so it wasn't overly busy like on a weekend

i personally prefer the remote solitude to the west coast and places like Hondeklip bay or Klein Pella and the remote Tankwa i enjoyed

For me and the open spaces with very little people .....that rings my bell for getting away

my absolute favourite place to ride is Namibia .......remote......friendly people.......scenery....

West Coast north of Kamieskroon along the orange is probably as close as one gets in SA so same vibe.........hopefully this answers your question

When we were in the Cederberg, West Coast and Namakwa in early September, I found that area almost like a piece of old South Africa. I live in Gauteng and the atmosphere there is so much more relaxed. Never encountered the kind of entitlement and arrogance we experience up here almost all the time. Much more respect and verdraagsaamheid between everyone. I could live there.

The favorite areas that you mention appeals to me as well, for the same reasons. Child of the Namib desert.

I was warned the 150 km dirt from Askham to Vanzylsrus was a nasty piece of work.........but hey what do you do.....

I did that road a few years back before tarred in a 4x4 and also hated it. The corrugation is the worst I have ever done!!

@Mother

First off, thank you for an incredible ride report.

i have read and reread this several times.

i made us realise that we have seen basically nothing of this incredible country and my wife and i were actually a bit ashamed and a wee bit emotional about that.
so that being said. long discussion were had and bit of soul searching (that was scary as there is some dark shit in there and they have cookies lol)
so we had planned on selling the tiger anyway, the wifey would rather pillion it seems) and off i trotted my chubby ass of to a couple dealers to just have a look around.

obviously my rt (what an amazing bike that i absolutely love) was not the perfect choice for the south african experience.

so thanks to this amazing ride report, THIS HAPPENED.....

Here is to a new adventure :thumleft:

"....we we seem to go to the same places ....", Great minds think alike, or is it that on the other hand fools never differ  :patch: :pot:

We have met a couple of years ago if I recall correctly.

You had a "clearance sale" and I came to look at a bike jacket if I'm not mistaken. I was actually more interested in the toys in your garage, especially your dad's trike.

Last month we stayed at Kareekloof in the Shepherds cottage, it is really nice if you like "rustic and peaceful". I'm alway on the lookout for roads that I haven't driven/rode yet and we took the Craig Marshall's pass on our way back. Unfortunately we were in the bakkie that weekend, but it is definitely added to my "bike-it-list" in the near future.
