Title: 2020 Honda Quest
Post by: Kamanya on November 03, 2020, 01:52:51 pm
Ok, ok! I know you like all your presents at once and prefer to read your reports from start to finish. Well, even I don’t know what’s about to happen. I woke this morning at the beautiful Kaleao Guest Farm in the Cedarberg waiting for the first of the contestants to arrive.

(it’s 35 degrees now and only going to cook more the further north we go)

Tomorrow is the long trek for all of us to meet up with the bikes in Springbok. It’s only there that they will be told in the evening who their team mate is going to be and do final prep for the bikes – hand guards and my favourite – the mounting of their stickers on their own bikes.

Imagine waiting all this time – we were supposed to go in April, but Covid scuppered that. Then we were due to go in September and the government put a spanner in that one too. – And now it is finally happening.

Anyway, I can’t wait! I am hoping the crew and contestants will add their 5c as we go along if they can squeeze in the time.

So, welcome to the 2020 Honda Quest, it should be epic!

Some memories from the past two events to wet your appetites (go back and do yourself a favour and read those mega ride reports)…

Day Minus One

And so the 3rd edition of The Honda Quest starts exactly where it’ll end, the gorgeous Kaleo Guest Farm nestled up against the Cedarberg in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The contestants are busy making their way through to this little oasis. Tomorrow it starts and in 10 days’ time, if the gods of Adventure are willing, we, a merry little band of 14 contestants and the Specialised Adventure crew will have travelled 2123km over some of the finest adventure tracks and gravel roads in Southern Africa aboard the 2020 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin, to be back here again.

So just what is this Honda Quest?

Well, Honda believe that the Africa Twin is the finest large dual sport adventure motorcycle available today. It’s a bold claim! The 2020 version is the current edition of a hard earned heritage that includes being a 4 time winner of the Paris – Dakar Rally in the late 80’s, a legendary status as a highly capable large adventure bike that has taken many from home to furthest remote adventures and, the first dual sport adventure bike to sport the highly acclaimed dual clutch automatic transmission. With such a fine pedigree, how best could one showcase all the promise that this bike can deliver? Enter Honda Quest.

The ingredients are; firstly a stretch of the planet that is both rugged, remote and beautiful that has ample reminders of those harsh desert rally roots to test man and machine, a place where utter reliability and versatility is crucial.  Next, find 14 adventurers plucked from their everyday lives. Then, pair them up into teams and put them each aboard a bike. Make the prize for the winning pair, the very bike they are sitting aboard and then set off into the unknown. And lastly, let the unrehearsed and unscripted story unfold.

However the competition is not a race. It’s going to take a very well-oiled team who espouse the qualities that would make them a fine addition to any group of adventurers. It is an adventure expedition, designed to test human endurance, teamwork and adaptability. There will be tough days for both the bikes and riders where the trails are technical and difficult and the whole group will have to work together to make it though.

Maybe what’s needed could be best described by Kobus Myberg’s message to the current contestants on the eve of their departure. Kobus was a contestant on the very first Quest and instructor on the last version who sadly couldn’t be with us on this one. Kobus is the very embodiment of the Honda Quest adventurer;

“The last time I checked there was 1 day, 11 hours and 45 minutes remaining before the start of Honda Quest - True Adventure.  As the long wait draws to a close for 14 excited contestants, I relive the moments that instilled such fond memories in me.

To all the contestants:

Some of you will be already packed, some will have repacked a couple of times trying to fit everything in and some are still working flat out and wondering when they will find the time to pack everything. For a few this will be the longest expedition they have ever ventured on and are really nervous of the unexpected. A few of you will still jump on the treadmill for the last time, wondering if you’ve done enough physical preparation.  Some are vigorously working on last minute preparations for their presentations. And then there will be the Class Captain that is already packed, presentation aced and you’ve got your whole strategy sorted.  Yes, you know who you are.

From my own experience, I recommend the following essential tools to pack with:

- Integrity
- Sense of humour
- Your true personality
- Team Spirit
- Honesty
- Respect
- Humility
- Fairness
- Compassion
- Responsibility

There will be some long days, some difficult days, hot days, windy days and some days where you have doubt that you’re cut out for this.  If I can quote one of Gené’s favourite sayings - “Toughen up cupcake!” - you are absolutely capable of doing this, that’s why you were selected. There will be days where your team mate and even other teams will need your support and days where you need theirs. Look out for the signs and don’t be shy when you need the support of others.

Always remember that this is not a race.  Pace yourself in everything that you do, hydrate often and look after yourself and everyone else.  To complete this event you need to look after your body and your mind. Don’t lose sight of the fact that it is a competition with a huge prize at stake.  Competition can bring out the best and the worst in people, you need to decide which side of the scale you want to be.

Lastly, listen to what the Specialised Adventure crew advise.  Everything that is said, even if you disagree, is for very good reasons.  Your safety is of primary concern to Honda and the Specialised Adventures team and their decisions always take that into consideration.

I want to close by wishing each and every one of you the best of luck.  May you make many friends, grow as a human being and come back enriched by the experience.  Enjoy every moment.

Best Regards,
Kobus Myburgh”

This, is Honda Quest; there’s adventure, there’s a bike and there’s soul. All the best ingredients for a life changing journey.

“Unless a man undertakes more than he can possibly can do, he will never do all that he can” – Henry Drummond

Ja...

Good Luck team Q3 aka Q2020!! Its going to be EPIC!!

Day Zero

A day of travel and wonderment with a great reveal at the end.

Today was the necessary liaison from last night’s gathering place in the Western Cape to the start line of the 2020 Honda Quest just outside the old mining and frontier town of Springbok in the Northern Cape. It was an unseasonably chilly, but sunny late afternoon, where finally, the competitors would find out who their partner was to be. Due to the challenge of Covid 19, this great adventure lived precariously having had to be postponed twice giving many good reason to be greatly relieved that we’ve all finally made the start line. There has been much time for each competitor to wonder who they would be partnered with.

With little fanfare the teams were announced around a fire and setting sun.

Please meet;

Team 1

Annemien van der Linde - Short term Insurance Broker - I am Annemien van der Linde (40). I have been riding motorcycles for 4½ years and that brings balance, self-discovery and confidence to my world.

Jaco du Plessis - Engineering Consultant - I'm a 27-year old engineering consultant from Cape Town. My first set of wheels was a motorcycle at university, and immediately I became hooked on the freedom. My bike makes me feel I can go anywhere and everywhere - and that's exactly what I plan on doing!

Team 2

Brian Harmse - Self Employed - 56-year-old, self-employed entrepreneur. I was a kid from Brakpan who learned to make great choices. Among them was to live the dream in East London - and to buy an adventure bike. I’m looking forward to experiencing the Honda Quest 2020 Bootcamp.

Neil Naudé – Engineer - Hi, I’m Neil. I started riding to beat the traffic and It wasn’t long before riding beat me into having fun with friends in the mud, sand, and rocks of South Africa. I’m from Pretoria and live in Cape Town. I’m also enthusiastic about rock climbing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Team 3

Kobus Coetzee – Agronomist - I am from Bloemfontein. I graduated high school in Lichtenburg then finished my studies at the University of the Free State. Started my career in North West and later moved to the Western Free State. I enjoy the science involved in nature, sports and mechanics.

Martin Harmse - Self-employed - Born summer of 69, in Brakpan. Happily married & have two children. Self-employed, living in scenic Eastern Cape. Sports include motorcycling, fishing, Scuba diving & mountain Biking.
Enjoy sharing life experiences with others. Feeling honoured to be part of the Honda Quest true-adventure family.

Team 4

André Bierman - Manager No nonsense bearded guy from Pretoria. My Friends call me Bierman, I love my wife, two daughters, the outdoors, adventures, community projects and working with my hands. Quest 2020 is the perfect combination of the things I love! These boots are made for riding. See you in the saddle.”

Deon van Niekerk - IT Project Manager - I am an outdoor enthusiast with a biking problem, approaching middle age. Whenever time allows I enjoy using my cooking skills acquired after school for the enjoyment of friends and family. My other interests include knife making, mountain biking and motorsport. Travelling with my wife and our dogs are highlights.

Team 5

Adriaan Theron - Technical Manager - Hi, I’m from Wellington. I’m a post-harvest technical manager during the week and on weekends I enjoy the life behind bars (handlebars, of course). Whether that may be on my motorbike or mountain bike, as long as it includes some sense of adventure!

Dylan Benyon - Psychology Lecturer - I’m a Psychology Honours graduate from UNISA; currently applying for Masters in Clinical Psychology. I’ve been riding motorcycles since the age of 3; I currently ride a 2014 CRF250R. I feel extremely privileged to take part in the 2020 Honda Quest and I’m eager to push both my body and mind to their limits.

Team 6

Jason Bryden - Self Employed - I live in Johannesburg and am married with 3 children. My family are my foundation. I am self-employed and competitive by nature. Physical challenges and adventure excite and inspire me, whether as part of a team or as an individual. I believe actions always speak louder than words.

Leon le Roux - Civil Engineer Motorbikes have always been part of my life. At age 36 I started Enduro racing and ended up doing the 2015 Amageza Rallye at age 47. Through this I built my mental and endurance levels. Also my skill that developed over the years and helps me as a 52 year old  to enjoy my adventure riding.

Team 7

Andries Dippenaar - Engineer - Who am I, I am that guy, I like to fix, I like to help, I'm not the clown, I won't let you down. I'm just that guy, you can rely, adventure calls, worry falls. I'm a 50 year old engineer from Cape Town and bike nut extraordinaire.

We wish them the very best of luck, great good fortune and a life changing adventure.

An update from @Kamanya (photos incoming):

Honda Quest Day 1

The previous evening had served up much food for thought; The competitors now knew who their team mate was, for better or for worse. Then to add to the tension, the evening was unseasonably cold for camping out under the stars. Not many could boast a fitful night’s sleep.

The morning broke overcast and cool, but not at all unwelcome for desert travel. We made way to the notorious Namaqwa Eco trail that runs besides the Great Orange River, fabled for its stark mountainous beauty, remote tracks and tough sand. Though only traveling to the great Melkboom landmark, which is not far into the trail, it was enough of a day for many in their first introduction to serious desert sand riding. A number of riders took innocent tumbles whilst trying to make friends with the “sand monsters” that lurk in the deeper sand sections.

Honda Quest is designed to start easy and build up competitor’s skills and confidence to tackle the more serious sections that are to be found in the later days. To this end, we made camp early to take advantage of the natural massive stony sand plateaus that lie behind the evening’s camp for those that wanted to top up on their deep sand skill sets. It was great to see those who had been finding the going tough earlier, coming back to camp with a bit of bravado and a smile. There were some tough lessons dealt out; Jason Bryden, who ironically is a reasonably skilled rider, took a heavy fall and is being assessed at the moment.

From Specialised Adventures:

Day 1 highlights

What can’t be denied is the utter beauty of our world made all the cleaner by not being able to have any contact with the outside world. This wonderful space is utterly devoid of any connectivity and we will only be able to connect with the outside world later on Day 2.
When each contestant had first been told of their making the final 14, they’d also been given a topic on Africa to present. This evening we were enriched on the Noble ancient Himba Tribe and the Wildebeest Migration through Kenya and Tanzania.
Tomorrow though, it gets measurably harder as we take on, amongst others, the seriously tough “Hells canyon”, a punishingly deep section of sand surrounded by steep sided canyons that seems to beat the heat into anything and everyone who dares through it.
I can’t wait.

Hoop jy verstaan nou beter?

From Specialised Adventures:

Honda Quest 2020 Day 2

It is now confirmed; Jason Bryden was casevac’d out to Springbok late last night with a suspected and later confirmed fracture of his left lower leg. We send our best and trust there’ll be a speedy recovery Jason.

The contest was designed with a day of settling in and finding their feet so to speak. But, today the easy bits were over and they were to be thrown straight into arguably the toughest day of the competition. It is the 136km of incredibly beautiful but seriously testing Namaqua Eco Trail.

There can be few more iconic desert trails, it often features in the top 3 Desert Adventures for both 4x4’s and Dual Sport bikes in South Africa. But because it has serious sand and technical rocky climbs, it doesn’t see nearly as much bike traffic as the 4x4’s. More so, for this reason, far fewer big adventure class bikes take it on.

The morning was a combination of astounding beauty of the stark desert mountains painted in their wealth of shades, and a trail that required full focus as some were being caught out and made an imprint of themselves on the Richtersveld.

The first of the days serious challenge, was just before midday when “Hell’s Cradle” was entered into. A near mile of sandy canyon twisting riverbed trail snakes between lurking rocks and boulders. Ironically, only one rider took a gentle slow tumble whilst in the meat of the canyon, but many had issues with a section directly after the required skills finish line.

Next up was “staircase to heaven”, a rutted narrow loose switchback climb with steep drop-offs for the unwary. The challenge was made more difficult when an Instructors bike picked up a slight case leak from a meeting with a boulder in the trail hitting the crash bar with enough force to bend it into the case. This unexpected issue created a new team test when the recovery and repairing of the bike was made the contestants’ responsibility to be observed under the watchful eyes of the instructors. They pulled it off fantastically.

The last 40km’s the pace picked up markedly as the trail opened up to vast late afternoon vistas as it curled its way around massive piled boulder mountains towards the national road that links Namibia to South Africa.

As if spending 7 hours to do 136km of grueling desert trails wasn’t nearly enough exercise, whatever the contestants may have held in reserve, was depleted with a short paddle against a howling headwind on the Great Orange River.

There was time for a celebratory beverage before a hearty supper - both not really touching sides – before the evening’s presentations by Nic Rossouw and Andre Bierman. Their topics were on Lake Malawi and the Bongo and Lord Derby Eland.

After a really full day of high adventure, as you would imagine, sleep came very easy after that!

What they don’ know, is that tomorrow they will be riding the Western side of the Richtersveld, an equally tough but far more rockier prospect. It’s definitely not getting any easier.

Day 3

What a day!

“I wasn’t expecting it to be this tough!” – Jaco du Plessis, once he’d made it up the narliest climb for the day.

Much had been made of the day in the briefing; as opposed to yesterday where sand was the main dish and rocks the snacks, today it was very much rocks and climbs and more rocks and climbs with just a sprinkling of deep sand river beds for a little added variety.

The day started innocently enough with a gentle meander past river-side farms before turning away from the river and diving into the beautiful, but harsh Western Richtersvelds rocky mountains. And then…

Imagine riding through a vast mountainous desert quite far from anywhere, when around a bend is a forest of balancing stones, or cairns if you will. With not a single sign or notice to say what this is about, it seems the perfectly quiet place that invites one to reflect on one’s own place and space in the world and leave a memory of whatever needs to be left there. The desert had touched many in more ways than just the physical.

Literally right at that experience, the group turned down a little used track to head south for first a stiff warmup of fast open winding jeep track, interspersed with riverbeds and boulder dodging, then, short sharp climbs before the big test; a series of successively steeper climbs the last of which is an intimidating test of momentum and bravery.

The group chose to send the more capable riders up the run, so as to walk back down to spot and help for those who might struggle. The steep track is eroded, filled with large loose rocks, is mostly all off cambered and has a wicked, very steep, chewed up switchback right at the top.

The controlled torque and versatile suspension of the Africa Twin, with much adrenalin and sweat, saw all the riders celebrating overcoming this daunting task at the top, whilst eating freshly toasted jaffles cooked over an open fire.

Although technically all the teams are in a competition against each other, there is a very apparent, ever evolving spirit of Quest comradery amongst them.

The last 80km was fast flowing jeep track, a welcome change from the pace of the previous two days where the average overall speed was just over 20kph.

With still 7 grueling days left, it’s still anyone’s for the taking.

Day 4

The Richtersvelds finest tracks and roads are now behind us, the best of the iconic Bushmanland, Tankwa Karoo and Cedarberge lie ahead. Despite these adventuring delights, the days are starting to take their toll; there are some very tired bodies here in Kamieskroon tonight.

But let’s rewind to this morning. Different to other mornings, the teams were set off in 5 minute intervals on a timed navigation exercise that was tracked. It was a tricky exercise that required patience and attention to detail and led the group to the foot of “Peters Scramble”.

There have been many seriously difficult climbs in these first 4 days; this one is by far the hardest of them all. It took the group just over 3 hours to do the 500m 4x4 track, it is seriously eroded sandstone gravel with several switchbacks, deep erosion gulley’s and large step-up ledges.

Again, the Africa Twins were up to the task, for those who still had their doubts about the DCT, its constant torque and perfect gear selection made them converts. Despite numerous visits to mother earth, the bikes took it all in their stride.

As if to reward the contestants for the terrific effort of the morning, the rest of the day was a feast of rolling narrow trails and farm roads that skirted the borders of the Skilpad Reserve and Namaqua National Park, before ending in the quaint little village of Kamieskroon.

No-one is not in some way, carrying the effects of the previous 4 days. Brett, our medic, is doing a sterling job keeping the various ailments and scrapes from becoming serious issues.

Tonight’s presentations were;

Brian Harmse – Zanzibar
Annemine van der Linde – The Great Rift valley
Adriaan du Toit – The Richtersveld

The weather this evening is again unseasonably chilly and wet and even though all 13 competitors are in Spartan conditions in a hall, there is much humour and good spirits. Sleep though wasn’t wasted, tomorrow is another long day of True Adventure.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201109/ee15b6b40f78859ac338abf328c7bb13.jpg)

Story of #2.
Annemien van de Linde at this mornings briefing selflessly announced her withdrawal by giving up her place to the partnerless Leon Le Roux. (His partner fell out due to injury on Day 1)
Annemien has been struggling with a shoulder injury from a fall on Day 1 that was risking her teams competitiveness and her safety. She decided that before the medic had any say in her future, she would withdraw.
It was an emotional moment for all, for she long ago won the respect and admiration of the other competitors.
Whilst out of the chance to win the main prize, she will get to complete Honda Quest on her bike.

An absolutely selfless act. Of course I'm saddened that Annemien can not go forward as a competitor, but find it very admirable that she knows where to draw the line in terms of risk and safety, this is all part of a challenge like Quest after all. It looks like this year the going is even tougher than before. What an interesting competition this has been so far.

Why does the number on a competitor's bib differ from the number on the bike that such a competitor ride with?

This year there’s a mix of manual and DCT in the teams, like in 2017.  They rotate bikes daily to experience both, with the exception that when there is very challenging sections, the vertically challenged gets first choice on the DCT.  The numbers should therefore be out by 1 only, unless something has changed.

Day 6 Highlights

Post by: Kamanya on November 11, 2020, 01:52:46 pm
Day 6

Marathons and Reflection was the theme of today.

An adventure bike has many roles to play, it’s been abundantly clear that the Africa Twin is quite at home in the rough stuff, far off the beaten track. The transition needed today, was the ability to make the distances between areas of interest shrink. We needed to join up the Richtersveld that we’d just come from, with Tankwa Karoo and Cedarberg. Between these two areas was nearly 450km of all manner of gravel roads; from the wide smooth fast “magic carpets”, to the small shale badly maintained corrugation invested jeep tracks. Today the Africa Twin lived up to its legend as a continent crosser. It’s a fine perch from which watch the world go by and count off the kilometers.

Additionally, each team’s challenge was to navigate and manage the entire group for 50km stretches. It one thing doing this with friends, it’s entirely another when there’s an eagle eyed instructor on your tail and a really big prize that is affected by mistakes.

Early in the day, one notable detour was to the grave of a Mr. Scheepers. What makes his final resting place worth stopping at, is that he looks out over a magnificent view surrounded by an utterly ancient forest of Quiver Trees. This was a topic covered the night before which meant that all of us, had a far deeper appreciation for these reasonably rare plants. Quiver trees being the African representative of the oldest living trees in the world. Mr. Scheepers holds company with trees that would have been well established even before the dark ages began!

Besides the navigation, the teams are watched closely for the entire Quest for their ability to ride together safely and effectively. When done well, it’s an efficient flowing dance of sorts that can be very rewarding. There were still a few spills along the way from getting it a little wrong though; some were walking a little more gingerly this morning, pride being the main casualty.

This is how the marathon was run, and so we made our way across the vast, big sky, open spaces of Bushmanland and the Knersvlakte. Very together but also alone in our helmets; there’s a big difference between loneliness and solitude. The latter is a quality time we seldom find these days.

By the late afternoon, the contestants were treated to the gateway to the Tankwa Karoo – Gannaga Pass. Long kilometers of rolling plains suddenly drop away for a breathtaking escarpment view that looks out over the Tankwa Karoo to the blue Cedarberg mountains in the distance.

The last push was literally chasing the sun over small 4x4 trails on the Tankwa Karoo, not an easy task with a setting sun in the visor.

We just made the Tankwa Tented Camp as the sun was about to kiss the tops of the blued Cedarberg mountains in the distance.

Tomorrow again, another change of pace

Funny guy!

You've never chased bikes, tried to get them on photo and video, then edit, narrate and produce. Then once created, get it approved by Honda and Hardy. Then try find signal to upload at the nearest opportunity. On day 4 we were sitting outside the Vioolsdrif Police station at 1:30 in the morning.

Who watches contestants and then asks them about themselves?  Is there a psychology component to Quest?  Is it you? ;D

All the crew, even the caterers are alert for every thing that the contestants do. I did an informal test on them all, but it was openly shared and lots of info given to them as to how to use it in their getting to work with each other.

All the instructors and crew are pretty good at getting into the weeds with the contestants. Gerrit - @Scrat and Claude @Claude Deyzel  (can't remember his forum name) are past Quest contestants.

It's not about trying to catch anyone out. It's simply keeping a close eye on how they Adventure in all respects.

Not one!

2017 - there were maybe 90, yes, that's right ninety! (but there were 23 bikes as opposed to 17 with the other 2. Everyone got multiple fronts and on the last day we all had problems front and back)
2018 - about 10-15 I think

In terms of Honda, was it what they expected? Better? Worse? Did he know what the AT was capable of before the Quest?

Riaan had almost no DS big bike experience. He had never stood before.

He’s power sliding round corners now.

He had no idea they were tie capable. Becuase he’s never been on a trip, his calibration is only to now things like the Namaqwa Eco trail. I think when he takes his buddies now, they’ll shit themselves. 😂😂

Contestants are free to do whatever they want. There is however always expert and experienced opinions that are given should they want it.

Day 7

Static day

The pace and intensity of Quest takes its toll on both Competitors and Support Crew. The static day is both a tradition and a very much needed break in the relentless pace of the competition and the space to take a deep breath before the final push.

“Static Day” is a little misleading as there are still challenges to be done, they just happen to take place around the area we stayed in.

Before sunrise, the contestants fanned out into the open plains of the Tankwa. After spending such intense time together, the opportunity to be alone with your thoughts and not on a bike, reflecting on their journeys whilst watching a sunrise can had profound effects.

After this “Alone Time” there was a GPS navigation exercise where some serious skills in waypoint management were tested. What made it a little more sweaty was that there was no bike involved, just plane foot power. Not an easy thing as many were carrying niggling bruises and strains.

Later, the contestants were asked to present their nominations for a worthy Humanitarian Project. The money they pledged will be more than matched by Specialized Adventures.

Nic Rossouw from Team 7 was the deserved winner.

It was mostly an early evening for all as the next day was to be the sting in the tail!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201113/c59e97342bb5824838637b42ca73db01.jpg)

Day 8

Sting in the tail!!

Today we started straight into the Postal Route from the Tankwa side. A challenging route especially for big bikes, it has everything on offer – thick sand, steep rocky climbs, loose rocks, river crossings and magnificent vistas. Even more special is that this route will no longer be available to the public. We are effectively the last group granted permission from the farmers to be allowed through.

The trail crosses two rivers and climbs up into the central mountains of the Cedarberg. Playing heavy on the minds of the contestants was that this was the last full day of competition. Making mistakes is not an option.

It bears saying that few big bikes attempt this pass and especially from taking the “up” option, but as a result of the previous 8 days, all the contestants had zero trouble getting up the critical Karretjies Pass.

Once through, we would finish the day with the Eselbank 4x4 trail that starts in the picturesque village of Wuppertal to end at Kromrivier.

Lunch was accompanied by a refreshing dip into a tributary to the Keurbosfontein River

With less than 6.8km to go in the day, for the first time on this Quest, 2 bikes picked up front punctures within meters of each other. It took just 20 minutes before we were on our way again.

With the sun touching the tops of the rugged Cedarberg mountains, the last written test was sat. Included in it were questions taken from everything the group has experienced and learnt over the previous 8 days.

Tomorrow we find out, who will get to keep the keys of their Africa Twins by winning the 2020 Honda Quest True Adventure.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201113/121beabbd4a2bd9c910e14aacfc1b126.jpg)

Thanx for sharing this amazing adventure with all of us.

Congratulations to the contestants, especially to the winners. Although.... for me, all who take part in Quest are winners.

Well organised and majestically inspired by HondaSA with the new Africa Twin CRF1100, and once again, logistically brilliantly executed by Specialised asventures.

On many of the contestants, you can see many of them have a red forehead.

That’s from red food colouring squirted into their helmets by one of the competitors. To avoid suspicion, he put some in his own helmet too.

He’d fooled Hardy into buying some earlier under the pretence that they wanted to make a cake and needed the ingredients.

Andre said of his partner @bud500 , “flip, maar jy lyk net soos ń Himba!”

I'll let the competitors on here fill you in on who the prankster was

Congratulations to the winners! :thumleft:
Brian and Neil, you guys got the bikes, but all of the contestants were winners!
At the beginning I could see how the contestants were still shy and reserved!
After the winners were announced there was a group of friends that sounded as if they had known each other for years!
It was closely contested and I could not determine any team that was ahead of the rest even up to the end!
Well done to you all, you guys were great :thumleft:

Post Honda Quest Blues, gratitude and reality checks.

I woke up in a bed this morning - My own bed at home in Loxton in the Karoo, and not a sleeping bag somewhere next to the Orange river
For 9 days I have traveled with friends and people I have only met once before. We have ridden and driven through what must be one of the most beautiful regions in our country.
We have all been part of the Honda Quest 2020.

I have seen boys become men, and I have seen a girl that showed us the true meaning of the afrikaans word "Vasbyt"
I have seen teamwork displayed in such spectacular fashion that it left me in wondering why there are still so many problems in this country that are still not fixed. I realized this morning that I have witnessed the spectacle of how capable us South Africans are of doing great things, when we work together.

To our "Kitchen Crew":
Louis, Nannie and Chantal - Thank you for providing excellent meals under difficult circumstances. We know how early you guys had to get up each morning to make this happen.

To our "Kamp Kaptein"
Hennie - You are the personification of what this country need more of. Thank you for your hard work every day and night.

Our Instructors:
Claude and Gerrit - Thank you for the kind but precise and fair way in which you lead the contestants into battle. My eternal respect.

Brett - our Medic:
Boet, you are so much more than a medic. Thank you for your compassion with others.

Andrew - our Media Liaison
Your passion for people moved everyone around you, and Willie could not have asked for a better brother in arms. Thank you for the inspiration, your balancing influence, the wise words and all your help.

Willie - Our Content "Crew"
What can one say about someone that will work in 20 hour shifts, without complaining, eat only if there is time, and still lights up the camp moral with his quick witted humor.
Willie, you are a genius and I believe anyone that has ever worked with you will testify to this - Thank you.

Riaan Fourie and the rest of Team Honda:
It has been a privilege to see how serious you take your work.
Thank you for believing in us and thank you for trusting us to show what your products are capable of.
You have achieved the most important thing any brand can ever do:
You have made your customers emotional about your brand

The contestants:
I will never forget the contestants of 2020:
Thank you for showing me once again what True Adventure means

Acta Non Verba
