Title: Roadside Coffees while out on a ride
Post by: Grunder on January 11, 2021, 12:36:59 pm
I often see people mentioning the fact that they make some coffee while out and about on their bikes.

This intrigues me...

I am keen on trying this.  I mostly try and stop for a coffee somewhere while I'm on a trip; this might me more fun.

Show/tell me some of your setups.

I'm eager to learn and start the habit       :sip:

Look tastes differ and you will get a lot of different opinions - but I take this with me everywhere with my little gas stove.
I like my coffee strong and creamy / lots of almost boiling milk (about 70/30) and this works very nice.
Mine is not the same as in the pic, I got it for R49 from checkers about 3 years ago, so money well spend.

Very interested here too, I love my coffee and would love to make a quick? roadside cuppa while another has a smoke or something.

@BliknÍrs How long does it take you to sort yourself out? Espresso sized or full cup sized?

I have a similar set-up
I use my little gas stove and a stainless Bialetti mokka pot (3 cup size).....it just about fills a normal coffee mug as the 3-cup refers to 3 cups of espresso)
It takes 8 - 10 mins to make a cup

Flask will work if its short term - we have done that too...

I have a fake Bialetti as well - 3 in fact - that I take on bike or 4x4 trips - small CampingGaz stove or multifuel stove, coffee at will!

Someone on the forum was selling drip filters with a plastic holder that fits straight on a mug - that would work too....

Spoilt myself with an aeropress before my most recent trip. Best thing ever for me to make a quick cuppa.

Aeropress is the way forward, although it took me a while to get the grind right.
Preloaded Aeropress plus a Stanley flask of hot water means a quick & easy roadside coffee.

Presses are too bulky. I use a diffuser.

The blue container / cover fits inside my travel mug, so it only takes up the space of a mug with a short stick.

The taste from the Aeropress differs a lot to the percolated coffees.
I am afraid its two different camps like KTM & BMW and what I meant with tastes differ.
I don't care for the Aeropress taste and my friend here, he has already posted, thinks my percolator coffee sucks

I'm considering this setup (R269) , with a flask of hot water or the small gas stove. Not sure yet, all the toys adds up
Although I also enjoy sitting down for a comfy coffee shop cuppacino

I have this at work. We do not get coffee anymore due to budget.

It works like a charm, I just find I go through my coffee very fast.

I just fill my camelbac with coffee. Nalgene inners can take the heat. Look, Iím not called the coffee monster for nothing: one year at the Toyota 1000 when you get the compulsory 15 min break inbetween laps, I put the espresso pot on the gas stove and made 3 espressos while the other okes were eating enerhy bars and bananas and stuff and drinking jungle juice. I was 2 min late at the start🤣. Got shouted at.

Please remember to test the results of the different brewing methods before deciding which methods coffee you like, as the taste differs.
If you like your coffee black the Aeropress and plunger type method will suit you.
If you like Cappuccino etc taste, check out the percolator type methods.

Bought this on Amazon for camping but works great for roadside coffee. Boiling water for two cups in less than a minute.

Just add your coffee of choice. I also carry a small stainless insulated bottle with long life milk for a few cups but we often just have it black.

R99 mokka pot from checkers hyper, R80 gas cylinder and the burner attachment is R399 I think from Cape Union. This one has a spark clicker built in so now matches or lighter needed.

Best thing I have bought and cool to stop on the trail for a cuppa

Nah, I'll stick to coffee shops, even wimpy if needs must. Sure, I like my coffee and those little brewing kits look the biznis, but when you add it to the mini compressor, puncture kit, sat nav, camera, drone, snake bite kit, and all the other clutter that's so essential to carry, but where to put it all, I tell ya I find it hard to stuff it all into my pockets.  :o

'Coz I'm old fashioned and I like my bike to look basic and unencumbered, that's why I'm not enamoured with all the showy and expensive jewellery cases and make up boxes that so many moffies like to bolt on to their bikes.  :pot: :pot: :peepwall:

So I'll take pot luck with coffee shops, good bad or mediocre. ;)

Jokes aside, I carry a .5 litre Isosteel flask which holds three small cups of coffee. Usually more than enough to get me to a place where I can get a refill.  I also carry a small French press with which I can make a brew if I run out and at overnight stops. I used to carry a Bialetti, but because Iím a lazy SOB, I find the French press more convenient.

Is the Bialetti a schlep only because you would have to carry around the heating equipment or is there another reason?

I see the guys are linking cheaper versions of this.  I presume they don't work as good

I have  a couple of Bialettis in different sizes (genuine and knock offs) and they all work the same. With the french press I just need hot water, which i can carry in my flask or beg  from filling stations or other roadside businesses. It is also much easier and quicker to use it to brew a fresh batch of coffee to fill up the flask

Does the Ricoffy come out any better after it's been through 4 coffee machines?

I'm in the road side coffee camp, in fact I'm the one in my regular group who brings the coffee and rusks.....and many times the braai grod, charcoal and wors aswell.
I've bought a small 3 cup mokka pot but haven't taken it out on the bike with me yet, still only boiling a small kettle on a small gas burner and doing the Nescafe/Jacobs thing.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210113/913446de40179de88b7bb4044442767d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210113/3d94dfa68438b574112e4936033bd955.jpg)

I just use a small Bialetti Moka knock-off and a penny stove. At first I had a homemade penny but then later I bought one at GPS4Africa. Takes a small amount of spirits and a lighter and there you go. Obviously I pre-grind my beans at home. This I only do for long trips, I've never stopped next to the road to make myself coffee, mostly due to safety considerations. Before COVID, I would prefer to stop somewhere where I can buy good coffee and talk to interesting people. Now, I am rethinking that strategy, maybe the bring-your-own is a better choice.

Freshly ground coffee, or use a Nespresso pod. Nanopresso handpress.

Nice. Just let the cups sit for a bit with boiling water a few times before use. Fresh silicon can give a horrible taste.

My idea of coffee on the go.........

Daas hy.

Since last year, I buy all my coffee from @weskusklong. I buy his dark roast beans and we grind them ourselves. I also buy these one cup pure ground coffee bags/sachets from him. Weíre not coffee snobs, but his coffee is the best tasting coffee weíve had, ever and I donít really drink instant coffee.

Hook it onto your cupís sides, pour boiling water through the bag/sachet and you have a perfect cup of coffee. On my next long trip, this will be my roadside coffee solution.

Aeropress is in my opinie 'n fantastiese stukkie gereedskap: lig, klein en maak baie lekker koffie. Dink al wat dit sal kan verbeter is die Aero Press Go.

Die sakkies wat gevul word met gemaalde bone werk uitstekend.
