Title: RR of our weekend of R&R on two RRs and a R...... and some rain & rivers..
Post by: Noneking on February 07, 2021, 01:59:04 pm
I recently made contact with @BuRP to ask his advice about a KTM 790/890 R Rally. Bart was very helpful and before we ended the call, we made plans to ride together in the Lowveld. This was before all the doomsday weather we've been experiencing in the Lowveld of late  and for some time the ride was at risk of being cancelled. When weather reports started looking more favourable, Bart confirmed his accommodation and arrived in Nelspruit on  Friday while nature was dumping 90mm of rain on us in less than 2 hours.

I wasn't sure whether we would be able to ride the next day......I was actually not even sure I would be able to get out of our estate. :peepwall:

This was the only way out of our estate and at 9pm things weren't looking good  :patch:

We made arrangements to meet at Bart's guest house at 7am. Things looked rosy when I woke up on Saturday and I immediately let Bart know that the ride was on! @chopper pilot was keen to join our ride on his new boney, but unfortunately the bike was not ready in time and the poor oke had to join us on his 990R  :peepwall:

The first drops of the morning started falling as I was waiting for Bart outside the guest house.

We rode in light rain via Uitkyk pass on some very slippery surfaces and as we entered Crocodile Gorge, it started pelting down. The Croc river was raging below.

We stopped foe a break as we turned off on the canal road running above the N4

The damage caused by massive amounts of rain over the last couple of weeks was clear. Every single road we travelled on showed the effects of the downpours. Rock and mudslides also caused major damage to roads and the irrigation canal showed in the pic

The rain stops again as we ride into Matsulu

We decide to ride over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Croc river to look at the water coming down. Itís an awesome sight and something Iíve not witnessed in my 20 years in the Lowveld

Even before we got to the Kruger fence, there was a stream crossing the road and then going underneath the train tracks through a culvert. It looked quite ominous and I stopped to check it out first. Water wasnít that deep, just above my knees, but it was turbulent and I was struggling to keep my footing in the middle of the stream.

I was still debating whether it was doable when Henk blasted into the torrent on his 990R. The water got hold of the bike and almost immediately changed Henkís course downstream. It all happened so quickly and the next moment the 990 was upside down on the embankment next to the tunnel, having nearly been dragged down into the Kruger park with the raging water.

Bart and I decided to play it safe and ride up onto the train tracks.

Another first was seeing the Nsikazi river in flood.

The second photo is what it usually looks like when we pass it on this route

We continue along the Kruger fence and have a lot of fun riding over the endless jumps and through countless pools of water.

At a favourite resting place, the flooding stops us dead in our tracks. I post some old pics for reference

We have no other option but to turn around and ride back the way we came. Crossed the stream via train tracks and back to Matsulu where we shared a pizza for breakfast in a very busy parking lot.

We had to adjust our plans for the day and decided to ride to Siyalongubu dam near Swazi border. Itís a nice scenic loop and because itís a bit higher, hopefully less flooding

Another favourite stop is a rocky outcrop that looks down into the valley below with spectacular landscape all round. We arrive to find a few 4x4s already parked there and the guys are having a serious party. They are all Nelspruit locals and I know a few of them. They offer us Brandy and Coke which I decline, but in the end the three of us end up sharing a ridiculously strong dop before we say our goodbyes and carry on with our ride

The road up the mountain is in a terrible state after the rains and it makes for some great riding. We ride past the dam where the mud has us moving around like figure skaters

The descent from the mountain was treacherous to say the least. Hard clay with a green cover of ďSabie SunlightĒ had the bikes sliding all over the place.

Unfortunately Henk and Bart both had offs within seconds of each other on a bad patch. Luckily neither was badly hurt and both bikes ok

We were nearly home when another obstacle presented itself. Another fast flowing river across the road. This driffit is usually bone dry.
I walked it first and when it got hip height, I turned around as it was threatening to take me down....

Wow! That's a lot of water. You okes have some serious testicular weight riding the red snot along  mountain roads like that

Snot..... snot has grip!
But, imagine an eel in a bucket of snot, and try to grab it with your bare hands - NO squire, nottachance!

That was the case on some patches of yellowish rock-lookalike mud, quite hard, not a slimelayer on top neither any visible tracks when you ride over it.... weird stuff I'd never seen yet!
It looks like porous sandstone but definitely is not, my precious jewels on a block!
The first time I actually stopped on a sliiiight uphill to check if my rear tyre was flat, it felt like that: little drive, wallowing sideways for no reason.
Henk stopped next to me to ask what was wrong, and I told him "dunno, something funny".
I let out the clutch and I saw the wheel just spin up, zero drive, an ant could have held the front in place, and the tyre didn't dig in at all, zero mark, nothing whatsoever - akin like ice, so: ominous.
It was on a downhill patch that Henk and me went down, me right in front to entertain Henk - to no avail as he bought the same plaas  :P
I slid under the bike in the berm, soft - but Henk wasn't that lucky, he was winded a bit.

I know @Noneking has some pictures of these scattered bikes lying all over, but he's way too polite and mannered to post them here..... yeah that's a compliment C, but please do post them?
If only to show the yellowish "sandstone" outcrop-lookalike, which is as slippery soos n paling in n emmer snot  >:D

Beware guys, I now know too  ;)
In comparison to this the red klay is fine, the bike just squirms a bit - and it has a name, 'glad soos n stuk Lifebuoy seep inni bad' .... but as said a tyre will find at least some some traction on it!
If anyone knows what the yellowish sandstone-lookalike mud is called let us know please, because for now I dropped it on an anonymous piece of ^^%%$$#  :(

Looks as if that area received some serious rain.
Kudus to the three of you for going out riding anyway.
Nice photos as always.

Video showing some of the riding. Unfortunately the gopro kept fogging up inside the lens protector, so most of my footage was not useable....

Wow, rain, rain, rain, I remember the Kruger fence road so well, and that stopping place, which now look totally different!

I am very wary of water crossings, and will rather do big distance around than risk going through.

And yes, those RR's "r" just very special....... :thumleft:

Same here, if there's no 'must' then a detour suits me fine, call me a sissy.
Chopperpilot almost lost his bike there but he parked it juuuuust safe.... maybe that's the same as landing a chopper Henk?  :P
The railway berm was just up there so we rather took that, at the other watercrossings we weren't that lucky and had to detour or turn back.
With a lighter bike comes a better chance to risk it, but wit ~200kg & low saggy tanks the water's hold becomes too much too fast.
No regrets though, it was an awesome ride: sogging wet but not cold  :thumleft:
