Hierdie olifant  gaan baie aftrek kry on die Harley fans!

I like the profile, not sure about the frontal view though.

Power numbers seem competitive, suspension on the Special model looks promising, the 7 inch TFT screen appears state of the art, numerous ride modes, L.E.D. lighting.  For those that prefer electronics to help reign in power, the bike seems to have it all.

I hope HD sells some of them, which I've no doubt with their marketing expertise, they will.

I will admit it's a huge step for HD introducing a bike to the market where it's competitors have a long head start, on the flip side, competition typically breeds better bikes.

good info

The specs look surprisingly good, and any proper alternative in any big segment is a good thing. I also think people love to judge based on nothing and that a lot of them was wrong, so I like it

And Evan and Charley put some of the parts through rugged testing during the long way up.

That’s where Long Way Up gets really interesting: the final bikes for the journey were a sort of mutant hybrid between the electric LiveWire and the Pan America.

“To deliver a highly capable, all-around high-performing electric bike, the engineering team combined the dynamically capable on-road performance of the LiveWire model with adjusted geometry and suspension based on the upcoming Pan America adventure touring model to shred dirt roads, single track and desert trails while maintaining its on-road handling prowess,” he says.

“The modified LiveWire motorcycles featured an additional two inches of ground clearance and an additional inch and a half of rear suspension travel,”  “The engineering team created an entirely new steering head and front-end assembly to obtain the desired geometry and clearance required for the larger wheels, taller ground clearance and increased suspension travel for off-road and rough-road use.” Other parts changes included prototype rotors, wheels and tires from the Pan America, as well as completely brand-new, custom windshields, rear shocks and triple clamps specific to the Long Way Up bikes.

Looks awesome. Light is very modern, I like it. But my gawd, that cowl they have around the light... it's ridiculous. Hideous. Bekotsingswaardig.

I think that wide snout makes for less buffeting, it also makes the screen simpler.

Have I lost too many brain cells to opine; I would have preferred a frontal design with some old fashioned round l.e.d. headlamps, perhaps similar to the BMW GS/GSA, asymmetrical arrangement of the early to mid-2000's, except symmetrical, considering the bike is manufactured by a 118 year old company known for selling a good number of cruisers with round headlamps?

The frontal design makes me think 'Transformers', when it could easily said Softail ridden by Swarzenegger in 'Terminator'.

I see the dust coming...
A herd of Harley riders on the R355, occupying most of the road through the Tankwa. Dust only to be surpassed by the the AfricaBurn trek. All in place, Captain, vice-capt, under vice-captain, etc. etc. Everybody else  in the organised formation completely covered with dust biggrin:
Tankwa Padstal completely taken over by the herd...drinking beer and cleaning airfilters. ;)

Me too, i would be quite happy with one.

Pricing here is 15 000 pounds for the wire wheel model.  After a model or 2 and bugs ironed out i would be happy to buy a seond hand one for aroudn 10.

I just watched the video again.

The statement, "the Pan America is the first adventure touring motorbike made in the USA", seems like a kick in Erik Buell's balls.

I could be wrong, but I thought the Buell Ulysses was made in the USA?  Riders seemed to love the character the bike had.

Buell was always regarded as a modifier of Harleys by Harley, never a full blown manufacturer.

I should first point out that I can neither, nor want to, afford one of these, I have been in a Harley shop once in my life (to get my boss a bandana), and I haven't really given this thread much attention at all.

But this thing started trending in my YouTube feed for some strange reason, and I started watching some tests / presentations with morbid fascination.

It certainly appears to be a contender amongst the tanks, and I find myself liking it, even the ugly looks.

Would love to ride one, and if someone gave me one or I won the Lotto, I'd certainly make space.

A herd of Harley riders on the R355...
....you have used the WRONG collective noun...

it is a RUMBLE of Harley riders...(think Hells Angels, arriving in a town, the noise those bikes make...)

or a SHINE of Harley riders.....(think of a different group of Harley riders, arriving at Sandton Square, Sat morning, for Cortado's..)

mind you, the HERD i-s appropriate with all the LEATHER-wearing...! ;)

If YOU have an interesting collective noun, then let us know!

Also viewed and sat on one at LDBA. Pleasantly surprised by perceived build quality and overall feel of the bike. Looks a lot better in real life than it does on pics.

Extremely comfortable seat and ergonomics.

Just Blip It trying it out….

the looks of the bike, especially the front, don't really bother me - I suspect most riders will only see it from the rear  ;)

I think it is refreshing move by Harley, as I would probably never consider one of their bikes, before now

I think if you were hard set on not buying a KTM or GS, this is very much next in line as a good option.
The Super Tenere is VERY long in the tooth, (is it still being sold actually?), but except maybe if it is R150k cheaper, I would take the HD, and also Ducati Multistrada. Looking at reviews the HD seems more competent offroad
What else? The fancy Africa Twin is not quite in the same class without a TFT, but may be another good alternative, I think a lot cheaper, but not exclusive.

But seems like the HD is a lot cheaper than the competition in America, that would make it a very good option and it should be a good seller.

If you pay that kind of money for anything that is no better than what is currently the competition, you won't automatically be a poser. You can also choose idiot, fool or meerkat.

Especially if that vehicle blows up on a demo ride.

wrt pay that money compared to current competition....it is same kind of money for the current competition and its on par with what current competition offers. Maybe do your homework first?

Sorry for the late answer, but R370 is not exactly "on par with current competition".  And certainly precocious for a manufacturer that is brand new in this segment. And super-precocious for a

manufacturer not exactly seen as the benchmark in handling or reliability.

It's true, you buy with your money what you want, but that does not erase the idiot factor, as proven by how much more expensive Harleys have always been than their better Japanese competition.

Ja but the buyer achieved his goal when you looked at his bike.  Rider vs Poser. Hoover Vacuumcleaner, Hardly Dangerous owners fall in the latter category.  Ek sou 'n Harley koop, maar in Graaff-Reinet is daar nie genoeg mense om te ooh en aah nie.  Die rendement op my "belegging" verhouding is dus té vêr uit om sin te maak.

In short, I had 30 min to ride the bike and quite frankly it was the most fun I have had on a bike in a long time, 140 horses and a megaton of torque... stable as a Abraham's tank and as nimble as a Springbok. I never once felt that the bike was overpowering me and would seriously consider it if I had the means to own one.
What impressed me most was the adaptive suspension, the moment I stopped it dropped so that I could put both feet down, plus it feels lighter than it looks.
Harley did a good job on design and have achieved the aim to get the weight low and the use of ultra light materials has also helped.
I can see why the Yanks are buying it... demand has outstripped production from what I was told. The S I rode with all bells and whistles sells for mere R420,000.00. :sip:
I did not fiddle with all the switches and knobs... I am sure it would satisfy the average gadget geek as well... I rode it in road mode and that was fine for this old git. :thumleft:

Did I mention it has key less ignition? Felt weird not turning the key... ;D

The quality parts, fit and finish is I would dare in a class of it's own.
No this is not a trails bike, but I would happily take it where I took my Explorer years ago on the ground SA.
This is a touring bike that can do gravel roads well.
If I could have afford it, including everything else that includes ownership like insurance and services an absolute yes.

not a WD, but Joe, owner of MetalHeads (Cape Town) - our next door neighbor HD and INDIAN Dealer, bought one a month back, so far we have fitted some accessories to it - as mentioned by others, fit & finish is very good indeed, and the bike is not ugly in the flesh, despite all those internet pics of a plankton-feeding whale with it's mouth agape - seriously, a good-looking bike.
