Title: TUGELA BASIN RIDE - TAMING THE BEAST IN KZN
Post by: Noneking on July 11, 2021, 10:28:15 pm
The 990 S was always going to be my touring bike. Long leisurely rides on open dirt for days on end. @Just Blip It! Would have none of that and invited me to be his riding partner on the recce weekend for the MOTUL TOUR OF LEGENDS which will take place 18-22 March 2022.

Most of my technical riding has been done on 890/790 or smaller bikes and I was very uncertain of just how I would fare on the big old girl in some seriously tricky terrain.

Our accommodation for the weekend was at Battlefields Lodge outside Dundee. We would be meeting guys that would be arriving in groups of 2 from Gauteng (@51Mobile  and Andy Biram), Free state ( @Twister  and Riaan), Durban (Treffon and Graig) @Nox arrived with Carl from Ladysmith and myself & @Just Blip It! From Mpumalanga. TT he idea was for guys to record tracks which participants could use to navigate to the event from all the provinces.

I spent a lot of time getting the old girl ready over the last couple of months and went for a shakedown ride the weekend before to make sure the bike was ready for the weekend.

I arrive at the filling station where we would be departing from on Friday morning. Left fuel cap lock would not unlock with the key.

Luckily I removed the bolts that prevents someone from removing the fuel cap assembly as this is a known 990 issue. While the attendant was filling the fuel tanks, I took the lock apart and lubricated it thoroughly.

We continued on forestry roads and eventually emerged on the Barberton Badplaas road. I was starting to build up a sweat from  a few little gnarly rocky climbs.

After a quick breakfast just outside Badplaas, we head in the direction of Chrissiesmeer on some glorious dirt passes.

After lunch we fuel up the thirsty 990s and head towards Utrecht. For the umpteenth time I make the mistake of assuming  that Mark will take us the on a leisurely ride to our destination…….

As we leave Wakkerstroom, Mark casually mentions that he saw a little track on google Earth which we need to check out. The butterflies in my stomach are awakened……..

Post by: Noneking on July 12, 2021, 09:43:24 am
The next morning it was quite a chilly start, something that us Lowvelders are not accustomed to. The purpose of the day's ride was to get a big group through the route to assess whether it will be suitable on the day of the event. This specific route was the Black/Red route. 10 bikes set off to Dundee to fuel up for the day's ride. Although this is going to be a 990/950 event in 2022, "some" were allowed to cheat and arrived on 790/890s and Graig was on a 1090R  :pot:. The morning started out at decent pace with wide open gravel highways. I was again lured into a false sense of security. As if out of nowhere, we started climbing a very rocky path. Mark was out in front leading the way as he so often does. Two bike lenghts in front of me Mark hit two large rocks in succession and was thrown of the rocky path and went over the edge. It was scary to watch and he was very lucky to come out of it unscathed! Bike only suffered a broken RH mirror and some scratches on the screen. It took a lot of manpower to get the bike back on the rocky path!

It was soon going to be dark and we were far away from our lodging. What followed must count among the worst 90 minutes spent on a bike.......going through shithole towns like Tugela Ferry and riding at high speed after dark with a smoked visor....... I was glad to arrive at Battlefields lodge in one piece. :eek7: :eek7:

My first proper ride in Rural KZN and I must say I've never felt so unwelcome in general. Everywhere we went people refused to greet us and kids threw stones at us. I was hit with a rock on the side of my helmet and it left me slightly dazed and confused for a couple of minutes. I'm so used to people being friendly where ever we ride in the Lowveld and Swaziland that this experience came as a bit of a surprise. In the deep rural areas it was a bit better though....
Maybe it had something to do with the general mood in the country at present......

We crossed Colin’s pass. The pass has some serious erosion problems

Further on as we crossed the border into Natal the roads are beautifully maintained and a joy to ride with very nice views.

Same ride, different perspective - often of Noneking's behind. This is going to be an event for the record books, spectacular terrain a few challenging sections hosted from a venue that is perfect for these events.

I was somewhat - make that very - intimidated to be invited to ride with many of the elite of SA Adventure riders, and was very relieved to have a 890 Rally to carry me over some interesting terrain.

Lekker video Boris! Thank you!  :ricky: :ricky:

This looked like a proper jol!
How many kilometers did you do @Noneking?
Seemed like a long way to go?

The Saturday ride was close to 370km if I recall. Did about 900km  to get to venue from Nelspruit and back

Nice report as usual NK.
Off topic but the only memory I have ofTugela Ferry is bad one that gave me the cold sweats for a few days. I bought my 1st and second 800GS from Ryder Motorad in Hillcrest. While waitng for the 1st one to be prepped I met up with another rider who was having his 1200 serviced. He stayed in Piet Retief and we decided to ride together as I was going to visit my sister in Bethal.
Just out of Tugela we crossed a bridge with a sharp left turn shortly after the bridge we were riding next to each other when a guy towing a trailer and coming from the oposit direction cut the corner.
With the other guy on my left I had nowhere to go and the trailers muguard cut my boot open, bent the right rear foot peg and destroyed the right side plastic pannier. I stil dont know how it happened but I did not even have a scratch on my right foot.
