Title: Above the Law
Post by: AlexAndyG on August 07, 2021, 02:21:34 pm
This is my rant for the day Ö I know I am going to take a lot of abuse for this but anyway.

Today while riding down Sefako Makgatho Drive a group of bikes came past me. As we were approaching the toll gate to join the highway I noticed all of them heading towards the eTag lane. I myself ride with a eTag on my motorcycle. Next thing I see them entering the eTag lane however the boom did not open. I then realised what was about to happen. One by one they forced there way around the boom. I stopped just before the entrance into the eTag lane with cars queuing behind me as between 8 - 10 bikes proceeded to do this, the last of which was on a R1200GS Adventure Triple Black. As his bike was too large and had a top box fitted to it he damaged the boom.

I donít get how some bikers have a complete disregard for the rules of the road and other road users.

What made me so upset is that people like this give bikers a bad name with our fellow car drivers. As the last biker left on the scene I took the brunt of the abuse from other drivers.

I tried to catch up with the group on the highway to show my displeasure with a sign or two, but most of them were too far ahead.

Some will say a little lawlessness is a good thing.

There does seem to be unfairness in the system. Bikes pay same as cars.

Remove the toll gates altogether and bump the licencing fees.
Life is just so much better when living in a country without a single toll gate.

I wonder which is the biggest theft: legalised highway robbery by the state or a few gatvol bikers slipping through a toll gate.

The motorists were just pissed off that their cars couldn't slip through.

When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.

Remember that always and we may retain what's left of our individual liberties.

Yes sorry, taking exuberant tolls has nothing to do with the rules of the road.  Good for them. I do it too. Fuck tolls.

No, no, no. We in the rest of the country that don't have toll gates, definitely don't want increased license fees by sponsoring those that do have toll gates.

Yes, for that reason license fees differ between provinces

Toll roads were implemented in the previous regime. Ppl generally adhered to them.

But we digress. This is after all not jou ma.

Wrong forum for this subject but I do agree with you @AlexAndyG - it is deplorable behaviour especially considering that the culprits was also involved in causing property damage while showing their discontent with "the system", the one percenters with their triple black behemoths.

urban tolls, i.e. e-tolls, I'll never pay - reasons have been explained years ago

The open road tolls I try to only pay around half of them..... my guess of what bikes should be paying

If not mistaken in Europe etc there is little or no toll for motorcycles.

Apparently to encourage people to ride more bikes, thus less traffic congestion an pollution.

I rode the 990 through 4 EU counties and did not encounter a toll gate. Licensing fees for bikes are next to nothing so yes, a bike pays pretty much no 'tolls'

The most important thing (road maintenance) is only a byproduct  :eek7:

Additionally, the current system is totally skewed as only some roads will be maintained while the rest of the infrastructure falls apart along with their respective municipalities.

In WC we are lucky that the only tolls are at the tunnel which I will use when in a car , but never on a bike , then again DuToits kloof pass is a worthy detour . Sanral wanted to have tolls on the N1 and N2 a few years ago but it was opposed by the DA and citizens , since then nothing further has come of it .

When you have as many awesome mountain passes as we have then there is reason to have both , anyway some of the best dirt roads are on the other side of the mountains so it makes sense to include some of them on a Cederberg or Karoo ride , and there are no potholes

Sanral runs the toll roads through different concessions to people like Bakwena, N3TC, TRAC and others. Sanral is 100% government owned. Ownership of the others and their operators are muddy and not transparent. The licenses and grants are up for renewal around the end of this decade. We all know what happens when government is involved in these setups. I bet a whole can of worms is still due to get opened in this regard.  Price hikes, money actually being spend on roads vs profits, outside interests, etc etc.   A whole dirty swamp setup for profiteering and fraud.  Like with etolls most likely a situation where for every R1 tolled only 6 cents is used on roads.  A situation only ICM was happy with.

Burn it all i sayÖ

Like the entire anc government.

Yr taxes as an example go in a big hole an you still need burglar bars, security gates, private security, roads are not fixed, have to have private medical an send kids to private schools. All things yr tax dime is supposed to cover

Why only boycott tolls? Why not everything else like yrcar licence an drivers licence etc etc etc and of course yr hard earned PAYE? Itís illegal to withhold it of course but so is skieting roll gates.

I think that we all hate paying in general but believe me when I say that my nerves were shot and it took an extra 2 hours traveling the back roads from Gauteng to the KZN bash . The pot holes are so bad that no man should have to ride on those roads . Stay on the N3 and stay alive if in a car .

If funds weren't lost to corruption and people did their jobs properly then there wouldn't be potholes , WC has very few potholes and those that appear are filled in very quickly .

Used to be like that - sadly not anymore. I see potholes everywhere and they are not being fixed. Neither are robots (traffic lights) for that matter - some have been broken for months - even after reporting it - not being fixed.

In Brackenfell we are good , traffic lights are removed regularly over weekends and replaced within a day or 2 , same with potholes . Yes , it has dropped but compared to the rest of the country this is paradise

Yes tell all how many potholes you find outside CT, along the Garden Route and into the Karoo. As for CT I can understand a large city will be a bit slower fixing them.

Iím not sure how many people will be upset with this, but, here goes anyway. This last weekend I did a trip to the coast and back. I found the perfect way to go through the toll gates, follow a bike into the lane, wait while he removes his gloves and takes out his card and pays. The boom opens while he is putting everything away and getting dressed, this is the correct time to ride through. The boom then closes behind you, the expression on the guys face is priceless, almost therapeutic. I guess you have to have been there to appreciate it.. please can I ask the guys who are going to pay to identify themselves by putting a green sticker on their bikes so I donít waste time following someone like me who is also trying to skip the toll.
Toll Fee Zero. Look on the Dudes face priceless:

Just to put peoples minds at rest, the poor biker who paid does not have to pay again they open the boom for him as he has already paid. Itís the poor toll company that gets defrauded to the extent that for 2 bikes they only get paid the same as a F250 with a double axle trailer with 6 bikes on it.
