Title: Namakwaland and Richtersveld Wildride
Post by: Noneking on August 15, 2021, 07:18:54 am
On a Friday evening in the middle of July my phone pings with a WhatsApp notification. It's @Amsterdam . The message goes something like : "We should organise a West Coast/Richtersveld/Orange River/Cederberg type loop. Are you keen?"

I'll plagiarise @WildWood 's Orange River Wildride title in part as much of this route was based on the tours he does in the area.

The group is mainly made up of the riders from our Mpumalanga/Limpopo trip a few months ago. @Amsterdam @BuRP @2StrokeDan Marc and myself. @chopper pilot already has a trip planned later in the year so he could unfortunately not join our ride. I invited @Muffin Man (who has been a lurker on year for way too long) along and his brother Wayne who  is from Cape Town and has ridden with some of the other guys.

My journey starts on Friday morning in Nelspruit. The 3 hour drive to PTA on N4 turns into  4 hours due to crazy long weekend traffic and roadworks.

@Muffin Man pics me up in PTA and we spend go for supper with his beautiful family. We leave Kempton Park at 4am and head for Prins Albert where we will leave the bakkie and continue on our bikes on Sunday to meet up with the rest of the group at Cederberg Oasis.

The drive is a pleasant one and the non-stop conversation makes the trip go by in the wink of an eye.

We make it to Prins Albert by 3pm and do what any respectable Adv biker would do after an 11 hour drive...... we fill up our bikes with fuel  and go for a quick ride over Swartberg Pass. :ricky: :ricky:

It's a beautiful afternoon and with lots of long weekend traffic on the pass, we ride at a sedate pace and take in the beautiful views.

We stop to take in the views on Souther side of the pass and decide to turn around and head back to town. The deciding match of the Lions Series starts at 6pm and we still have to shower and unpack.

We watched first half of the rugby at the Swartberg Hotel Gin Bar and dinner after that at The Rude Chef. In the meantime @BuRP also arrived in town, but he was spending the evening with an old friend.

On Sunday morning, we packed our stuff. and rode over to the Lazy Lizard for 'n lekker breakfast and a few coffees.

We had lunch at Touwsrivier, fuelled the bikes and met a WD who is apparently well known on here. Can’t remember his name, but I got this pic when he wasn’t looking.

I hadn't seen my brother @Dwerg since December and since he moved to Hermanus earlier this year, I would probably not see him again until this December. He was on a road trip with his wife and we knew we might run into each other along the way. I was very happy to see him and we had a quick beer together next to the road in the middle of nowhere.

After a very long day in the saddle, we arrived  at Cederberg Oasis. Was great to see everyone again. After unpacking and getting out of our kit, we head to the restaurant for a few beers and wine, great food and the rest of the group then proceeded to put the fear of God into us for the sand riding that lay in wait……..

Ran into @Grumpleton  at breakfast, nice to meet you!

This is was the start of the real trip. Amsterdam put together an ambitious route with long distances that needed to be covered every day. That is what I came here for, fit in as much riding as we can into the daylight available to us.

If you ride with Muffin Man, you better like boiled eggs. He arranges boiled eggs for every rider for each day of riding on every trip. We had the first of our boiled eggs at the filling station Lutzville and washed it down with a cappuccino from the self service machine.

Roadside maintenance in Lutzville. Amsterdam changing his clutch fluid

I had only used the bike to go to the shops once or twice since coming back from Kaokoland with @BoskakBruce and Marc in November.  The clutch felt fine on those trips.  As it happens, @ianb had sent me a replacement slave cylinder piston with a double o-ring just days before the trip.  Unfortunately it had not arrived yet otherwise I would have fitted it before.  Luckily just replacing the old clutch fluid and bleeding the system sorted out the problem.  It certainly caused some anxious moments on the way to Lutzville.

I can be a bit ambitious in planning the distances to be covered in a day.  On the last Kaokoland trip our planned day 1 took two days to complete.  And that was with only 3 bikes.  When doing the Lutzville to Hondeklipbaai section it is a good idea to try and get out of Lutzville by about 10 or 11 latest.  This way everyone can find their sandlegs and there is time to stop, rest and enjoy the scenery.  But because I wanted to show the upcountry boys a little more of the Western Cape I had planned to ride from Cederberg Oasis.

As it happened, we left Oasis about 45 minutes later than planned.  And of course you need to stop and enjoy the surroundings a bit at times as well.  Still, we were making good time until we suddenly lost Bart when we got to Vredendal.  Turned out he had run out of fuel.  This was surprising as his 701 is equipped with the extra Rade Garage tank.  No time to ponder this mystery as we had to keep moving.

At 1 PM we left Lutzville and I was beginning to feel the time pressure.  Three big bikes, lots of sand and in a bit of a rush, well we all wanted an adventure, not so? At the stop in Lutzville we met some people who had just come the other way and they warned us of severe muddy conditions on the road ahead.  Luckily this was somewhat of an overstatement and while we had to skirt a few puddles, the road was mostly just fine.  I was already thinking that the rain might just help everyone a bit as it would make the sand easier to ride.  a 5PM beer in Hondeklipbaai still seemed achievable if we just ride like men possessed.

And then it was time for the West Coasr Sand…..

I approached it with a fair amount of trepidation. My experience of riding proper sand is limited to a trip through Kaokoland and Damaraland on a Husky 501 which Most will agree is like cheating and it made sand riding a non event.

I was concerned that the mining guys had messed up the roads by grading everything so I led everybody onto a little detour.  You know those very sandy twisty little tweespoors on the seaside of the road.  I had brought the 701 for this trip as that makes sand riding a lot easier than the 890.

And then suddenly, as if out of nowhere……

Wayne came down hard. We could see his wobbles for about twenty metres and found him lying next to his bike. He was winded, had sand in every orifice and did not look happy.

Eish that rode has become really sandy after it has become a very popular 4x4 route. In the 90's I could do from Brand se Baai to Groenriviermond with one hand on my XL500S until Sparks Esterhuizen got permission to use it from De Beers. His groups was some times up to 30+ vehicles!!! :o

From here the pace picked up but we were racing against time to make it to the West Coast reserve gate where the real sand was waiting

The 890 Rally proved to be an absolute beast in sand on this whole trip. The MotoZ rear would launch it out of the sand with a quick twist of the throttle and from the it was just a matter of getting on the pegs and holding on.

We arrived at the Park entrance at 4:05 and were refused entrance. No amount of begging, swearing or crying could convince the officials otherwise. We were very disappointed, but Amsterdam assured us the would be plenty more sand on the trip to more than make up for us missing this part of the ride.

Some characters indeed!

From left to right:

Danie @2StrokeDan, Henry @Muffin Man,  Bart @BuRP, Jan-Lucas @Amsterdam ,Marc and Wayne

The youngest in the group by far, I feel very privileged to have been part of the adventures we have shared this year and specifically on this trip! Amazing how WD continues to bring such diverse groups together.

We had a great supper at Die Rooi Spinnekop and was back there early morning for breakfast.  Wayne had decided to head back to Cederburg Oasis after his fall the previous day. He was feeling a bit eina and was not feeling up to the rest of the trip. We said our goodbyes and head off to Koingnaas to fuel up

Bart is great value for money and excellent company if anything mechanically goes wrong. Only recently made his acquaintance and am all the richer for it.
Dan has a wicked humour and a fountain of knowledge on almost anything. Competent on anything 2 wheeled.
Marc, smous of note. Man of international mystery.

I rate your route as one of the finest. And time of year is perfect. Middle summer is a lot less pleasant.

After we left Oasis, everytime time I saw headlights coming over the hills I got super excited. After about two hours I’d given up hope just 5 minutes before we saw you and sommer shed a little tear because I was looking forward to seeing my boet that much

Up on the mountain the wind was pumping! It was an effort to keep the bikes upright and most of us were literally blown off the track at some point. Signs of what was to come later in the day was visible in the distance, but we didn't notice it...... YET!

At this point, traveling at 40-50km/h, the dust and small bits kicked up by the back wheel was hitting me on the back of the helmet. Very unpleasant
Crazy wind for rest of the day

We arrived at the Park entrance at 4:05 and were refused entrance. No amount of begging, swearing or crying could convince the officials otherwise. We were very disappointed, but Amsterdam assured us the would be plenty more sand on the trip to more than make up for us missing this part of the ride.

Impressive!!!

The next moment the road disappeared and it felt like we were riding in the dunes. It all still appeared very cool at this stage and we were all saying how beautiful it looked. A few minutes later it was chaos. I couldn't see 5 metres in front of me, I didn't know where the road was. Was I riding in the right direction? No idea where my mates were...... Cars coming from the front??? Sand in my mouth and eyes.

It was a harrowing experience. I was able to take a bit of video before it really got bad......

I recall Amsterdam and Marc being in front of me and was very worried that I might ride in to the back of one of them. And then it nearly happened...... as if out of nowhere, Marc appeared in front of me, hugging the embankment next to the road turned dune. We rode together for a while, but the heavier 890 needs to carry a bit more speed to be comfortable in the deep sand. I don't recall passing Amsterdam, but somehow I did.

I was elated to emerge on the other side and when Mark emerged from the cloud, we high-fived each other and started telling our versions of passing through it.

@BuRP rode up ahead and we arranged to meet up with him in Eksteenfontein. Meanwhile, we were waiting for @2StrokeDan to emerge. After a very long wait, Amsterdam and I rode back to go look for him. Considering what we'd just been through, I had an uneasy feeling about it all....... I was was very relieved to find Danie standing next to the road a few km from where we were waiting. Unfortunately he had his bike's chain in his hand........ it broke in 2 places and he was going nowhere slowly. Decision time.... Danie was adament that we just tow him back to main road where he would be able to make a plan. Our fearless leader  O0 @Amsterdam would have none of it. He insisted on towing Danie to Steinkopf where plans would be made....

I was given instruction to ride back to the others and we would hopefully all meet up again at Oewerbos Lodge on the Orange River. :peepwall:

Nog was dit einde niet........

Amsterdam asked BuRP to wait for us in Eksteenfontein where we would all regroup and ride through the canyon to the Orange River. With 2StrokeDan's breakdown, the waiting became too long for  Bart and he decided to leave Eksteenfontein without us. Cell signal is rare in the Richtersveld so we were unable to let Bart know about the delays. As we arrived in Eksteenfontein after 16:00, we started looking for Bart who was nowhere to be seen. We asked around and eventually someone said they saw him in town earlier.  A WhatsApp  message from Bart came through on the group, sent some 40 odd minutes earlier saying that he has left and is riding alone and will see us in Klein Pella. This was a problem as we were staying over at Oewerbos and would only ride to Klein Pella the next day. Surely he could not be heading to Klein Pella??  The frustrations of the day boiled over and both Marc and I were very upset. What were we to do?  Marc has ridden the canyon before and was not happy starting the track this late as any problems would see us riding tech terrain in the dark. I was worried that Bart was in fact riding through the canyon alone and what would happen to him if we did not follow?  We were also not sure how Danie and Jan-Lucas were doing towing to Steinkopf. I left the decision to Marc as he knows the area well and we agreed that we should not split up further but rather head to Oewerbos via Helskloof and manage whatever happens from there. I was very disappointed to mis out on the canyon route, but Helskloof proved to be awesome fun and I was able to vent some of my frustration in rocks and sand.

Yeah look, as is usually the case, the toughest bits don't get photographed as no one wants to stop and take the pics.... The sand was challenging in areas and there were some proper technical climbs and descents on this trip. I have ridden with guys that would do it on a GS, but it takes proper skill and some decent sized ghoens as indicated by Marc in the pic below... :lol8:

Bart arrives a bit later, having ridden the canyon on his own and very obviously didn't go to Klein Pella. We all have our say about the frustrations and clear the air. Later Jan Lucas arrives from Steinkopf where Danie was still trying to sort out his bike. Apparently they found a chain off an old Quad in the local scrapyard and he was trying to make that work. Unfortunately that was the end of Danie's trip with us and he left for home from Steinkopf the following day. Always sad to lose out on a trip like that, but we will ride together again!  :thumleft:

Later that night all the frustrations are forgotten as we enjoy redwine and some great pizzas together

In case some of you don't fully realise it, those pictures of the bikes in the sand are on a section of hard gravel road.  I have been there before when there were a few short sections of road that were covered in sand but now long sections were gone.  It was nice virgin sand so not hard to ride on the smaller bikes.  But the big problems were the wind and the lack of visibility.  I was continually blown into the berm on the left hand side of the road.  I then moved a bit more to the right and tried again.

The sun was shining at us through the sand.  A layer of dust of dust covered both the inside and outside of my visor and the same for my sunglasses.  There were times I could not see more than 3 meters ahead of me.  At some stage I stopped and wondered how I could possibly proceed.  But, you don't know how long this will last and you can't just stay in this misery.  As I am about to ride again Noneking comes past me.  I see him for a short moment and then he is gone.  My biggest concern was that a car would come from the other side as I would not have seen it until you are about to hit it.

When I came out of this section I was very happy to find Muffin Man, Noneking and Marc waiting for me at the side of the road.  But no 2StrokeDan.  We wait and wait, no one is keen to go back into that dust.  But you can't leave anyone behind so Noneking and I turn around and start looking.  The good thing is that with the sun on our backs the visibility in the dust is okay-is.  Not grand but you can see enough that we would probably have seen 2StrokeDan before we would have ridden over him, something I considered a to be a positive in this dust.  And even better was that Danie was standing in a completely clear spot, no dust no nothing.

I have never towed a bike.  But there really was no other option to get to a place where help might be found.  With a 5 meter rope between the footpegs of the bikes we went back towards the tar road.  There were plenty of the very sandy patches and my bike was straining to get through that with a tow.  I didn't dare to go too fast but at least I was on the bike with the power, 2StrokeDan had it much harder being dragged through that stuff.

He had insisted that I just tow him to the Port Nolloth-Steinkopff tar road and leave him there to sort himself out.  I knew I would lose this argument if I stopped and tried to convince him so we just carried on straight to Steinkopf.  When we stopped at the petrol station 2StrokeDan looked very happy that it was over.  Apparently at various stages he was blown across and the tow rope was scarily close to our wheels.  I was blissfully unaware of that but equally glad that we had managed to get somewhere.

That was a wonderful video. As I said, your timing for this time of year is really the very best time to ride this part of the world.

So cool to ride along.

To be honest, I was very relieved when you offered to tow Danie! I have towed big GSs for hundreds of kilometres and absolutely hate it!
Thanks  JL!

We arrived at the Park entrance at 4:05 and were refused entrance. No amount of begging, swearing or crying could convince the officials otherwise. We were very disappointed, but Amsterdam assured us the would be plenty more sand on the trip to more than make up for us missing this part of the ride.

No!!!!

That is the best section.

Lekker trip. Nou mis ek die huis. Het laasjaar voor ek oorgevlieg het dit met bakkie gedoen en familie vir laaste keer.

Not for the first time on this trip, the 890 feels like a proper desert racing machine :ricky: :ricky:....... i get sucked in and find myself so focussed on the trail ahead that I miss a turnoff on GPS and the group follows me thinking that I know where I'm going. We stop at the cairns to take pics again and the I continue on the incorrect track. I eventually realise my mistake and we have to ride back to the turnoff.....

No-one in the group has ridden the track to Steinkopf before and as it turns out, it is one of my favourites of the trip. It is a good mix of flowing riding, gnarly rocky climbs and descents, spectacular scenery and even some flowers in spots.

I love taking pics in general, but especially on bike trips. I like having the visual reminder of what transpired on a trip and often look back on trips gone by and relive them through the images and video footage captured. I also enjoy sharing trips with like minded people, friends and family. I quickly learned that looking of pics of your own bike or POW footage of the road ahead is of very little value or interest to others or myself.
I try to  ride behind other riders as much as possible to get more captivating video footage and then I often race off into the distance, scan the surroundings for a nice backdrop and then photograph my riding mates coming past. Then a few pics of my own bike. Ride hard to catch up with the rest, take some POW videos riding behind them and repeat the whole cycle again. This doesn't always sit well with other riders and there have been trips where I have been lambasted for not riding with the group or causing too much dust or not "knowing my place  :dousing:" on the ride. Not everyone enjoys having someone ride just off their back wheel as well, it takes a certain amount of trust to know that a rider hotdogging with you knows how to react, will give you space to move across the track and will not ride into the back of you in under braking or acceleration.

This group, on the rides we have done together have been very accommodating and even like to pose for pics  ;) @2StrokeDan specifically has perfected the staring into the distance or pointing at nothing specific pose.... :lol8:

Fantastic Noneking! As already mentioned, these pictures and ride reports have many yearning... :drif:

I've tried capturing a trip like this, but soon found out that it's extremely hard work and quite tiring to stop every now and then to take proper pictures and as you mentioned, the photographer needs to be everywhere at the same time.

Luckily I have a riding buddy, named @Nimmo. He's also mastered the art of capturing a trip, in detail, and it's always a huge privilege to be able to relive a nice trip through his pictures, afterwards.

POW footage?  Hmm, I did my best to make this a "take no prisoners ride".  Noneking rides rather fast and entertains himself in the waiting periods by taking pictures.  For me that is a winning combination, we ride at a good pace and you still have photos of the ride afterwards.

The section from Oewerbos back to Steinkopf is visually stunning and really nice to ride on top of it.  I got that track from @McKracken.  It is 90 kilometers and took us 3 hours, only because we still had a long way to go afterwards. It looks like a good section to arrive at late afternoon and just camp out for the night.

Hel, daai 890 klink kwaad!

It does indeed and when you hear that bike storm up behind you it inspires one to grab a handful of throttle.

I have done most of these tracks now with 1190 and 990, so just wondering....the guys that did it with 701 or smaller...wasnt it a frustration? its short technical patches and then nice gravel again. (I have not watched the videos yet so could be wrong)
I think the 890 / 990 class bike is perfect for this area.

Your footage is awesome, but I can imagine that you must have taken some flack for being up and down like that. Myself also hate riding in dust, I will either push hard up front or fall back and chill, no inbetween.

POW I would guess should be POV point of view

No it isn't for me, not a frustration but a bit of envy in some areas.  The 701 does most things very well and I was a bit worried about taking the 890 for the sandy bits.  However, the guys on the 890 and 990 were doing just grand.  Maybe I will be braver next time and take the 890.

:lol8:

That’s what happens when an boertjie tries to be fancy in ingils….
POV yes….

We did very few easy gravel sections bar maybe first and last days. And there was some proper technical stuff thrown in between. Also keep in mind that the guys on smaller bikes are 60+ years old with Bart oldest at 65yrs if I’m not mistaken. Bloody impressive that they are all still riding (yes riding not just pluttering along) these routes. They will put some younger guys here to shame on any bike. Both Amsterdam and BuRP also own and ride 890 Rallys and I’ve ridden with them both on those as well

Lekker RR Noneking.

In the metropolis of Steinkopf, we fuel the bikes, have a snack in the parking area of the garage. BuRP is tired and opts to take a shortcut to Klein Pella. The remaining 4 have a 50km ride on tar to our next point of entry into riding heaven.....

I have walked, exactly from 5:51 back to Oewerbos. Only once I got to the river, did I get a lift from one of the farmers. Still, it was 35km to the lift. My cars battery had left me stranded. It was a Loooooong day.

A mind numbing  ride on tar ended with an abrupt turn off the N7 and through a gate that didn’t look unlike any of the other gates we’ve opened and closed in the last few days.

One of the highlights of the trip, the Namaqua Eco trail

Thanks to the kindness of the mods unbanning me a bit earlier, I can now talk along with this thread.

If only I had anything to say.....

Oh yes, on the question whether the 701 was frustrating in the more open sections, these singles has a top end of around 160/170kph, and very few places on this trip will allow anything near that.

So, no, the 701 was anything but a frustration.  We simply did not go fast anywhere.

Nie eers n ketting hou op n KTM nie. :pot:

I have long said that in all my riding, I consider it the finest dual sport desert riding. The Namaqua Eco trail is an epic. The views, the riding, the remoteness, the solitude and energy of the place are momentous.

Long may it be such.

Being able to ride your bike at speed for kilometres on end, spectacular scenery as your backdrop and terrain to keep your senses focussed........ This trip was just amazing. Riding with a bunch of pensioners that can maintain a good pace was just a bonus  :ricky: :ricky:

BuRP is tired and opts to take a shortcut to Klein Pella.

@Amsterdam said it himself, "he packed some ambitious routes" - and note that both applies to technical as well as distance/duration, he wanted to wear us (INcluding himself note!) out. Not bad for a notayoungster anymore, and yes, I like that too - keeps me fit without having to do mindnumbing stuff like a treadmill or why  ;)
And, let me put this here for eternity: Thank You for this!  :thumleft:

The track from Oewerbos to Klein Pella though started with a longish loose-rocky section - for those who've ridden it the De Wildt 'coconuts' springs to mind here - which wore me out, thouroughly even. As Canzius has mentioned earlier this is not too conducive for my sense of humour - he knows me well it seems, and true too.  :P
Dan was missing today, and with him our self-appointed sweeper, a role I prefer to take - and took: I'm hardly the fastest so I won't slow down the lot, and I hate someone riding close behind me (on this, Dan never does - dankie maat!).
So all was well.... but as said it wore me out completely, I was knackered by the time I caught up with the others somewhere at the end of the 'Weskus Kokosneute'.  :(
In ever-cristal-clear hindsight, bitofa Babbelaas maybe? Had a bottle of wine the eve before, possible maybe....  O0
The rest of the track to Steinkopft though turned out to be fast stuff, and I sortof got my mojo back chasing Amsterdam, he's no slouch especially in the corners (where I suck  :-[ ).

Anyway, in Steinkopf Marc told me the rest was 'SandandSandandSand an MoreSand' so I thought it best not to slow the guys down and take my own route to Klein Pella.
Google Maps showed me tar-only whilst Maps.me offered something completely different, nicer I thought.... but Amsterdam looked at it, said it was SandandSand and told me to take the tar.
Then they left and I finished my coffee.... and my plan: I would do the Maps.me route, bugger it, tar is boring at the best of times!
Some 12 to 13km tar on the N7 North (the others went a bit further apparently), then off right on a wiiiide dirtroad - good!
This road is not unlike a Namibian dirt highway, so at ~130 one makes good progress here.
At the end some public works (a water pipeline to Steinkopf I reckon) were there, and the road tuend to a smaller more rural one, and led me to the Orange River's oewer.
Here I stopped at some pumping station and a kinda 'tunneltjie' for a photo, and this was lucky for a herder with some 150 sheep coming my way on the road, a running bike with a loud barking exhaust would have had all those sheep swimming in the river as on the other side was a too-steep hillside  ;D

After they'd passed I thought 'let's see where I will cross the track of the others for today', so I switched On my GPS.... to find I am ON it!  :o
Zooming out I discover that both routes are not too dissimilar, the Maps.me one only adheres to the large dirtroads whilst the track does not.... so I decide to follow the latter!
I did too, a beautiful route indeed, and I discover I can do this at quite a clip even - great, lekker!
But - NO biketracks, nothing, I only see here & there a not-too-fresh single bike spoor, and this bike seems to have come the other way.... which means my maats are behind me!
Look, I was genuinely fast on that wide dirt highway, but they're behind me?
Clearly they are, so now i do what: wait, or carry on on the track? After all, Marc & Canz were not too pleased that I had taken the last bit of the route on my own the previous day (plain proof that they are friends btw!  :thumleft: ) so I didn't want a repeat - but, a big BUT, they're behind me yeah, so if shit happens they'll come along this time, no?
So I did: took the track, had a ball and arrived at Klein Pella without incident, in fact I had plenty of time for pics (below), smokebreaks and the like, even tried to find a beer in a tiny settlement I encountered along the way - but in vain, no beer sold at all there  :-\

Just before Klein Pella the route veered off through a plaashek, and of course I took it.
The others, arriving some 2 hours later only, skipped this short bit I heard later.

At Klein Pella I booked into our accomodation and bought some Dates for Dan's wife - which he had promised to do but obviously could not do that anymore, and after our trip I was going to visit Stellenbosch anyway so...  :thumleft:
Klein Pella turned out to be the biggest date plantation in the Southern hemisphere, with 25,000 trees of which 20,000 in production!
Awesome quality too, mainly for export - see pic, I can recommend them  :thumleft:

Got nearly stuck on my way back though, that sand inbetween the rocks at the river proved VERY soft!

I was getting a bit tired at this stage.  That often messes big time with my riding ability.  So when I came to a normal corner, stomped on the back brake and overshot it in a big way I figured it is time too slow down, pull myself toward myself and get going again.  At the next corner I did the same but now I noticed that the rear brake feels "strange".  And this was true, when I looked down I saw that the front part of it had fallen off and I was using the much less effective "air brake" version.  This messed me up for a little bit until I adjusted my foot so I could still push on the remaining part of the lever to slow down.  It took a while for the brain/foot adjustment to get the right pressure but after a while this sorted itself out and it worked just fine in most (note - definitely not all) attempts at cornering.

It looked like we were reaching the end of the sandy track and we rode on the outskirts of a small settlement. There was some rubbish lying around and I remember thinking that I hope no one gets a puncture through here.... :peepwall:

Few minutes later my bike's rear began the dreaded dance........

Amsterdam had no mercy on this cool Thursday morning. A few hundred meters from the guest house, we were plunged into proper deep rutted sand tracks. I had hardly woken up and it came as a bit of a surprise. A few km further, I dropped my bike twice in quick succession, mostly due to failure to commit in the deep sand.

What followed after this was an hour of mind numbing corrugated dirt road with zero to see or enjoy. Amsterdam warned us about this and recommended we go into it with the right mindset.

My mind started drifting off. I was starting to miss my girls terribly and caught myself worrying about work and other nonsense.

Things improved as we turned off to Loeriesfontein and the lanscape and twisty road soon had me focussed on my bike and the trip again

We encountered some mud and it drizzled in spots, but as we finished fuelling our bikes in Loeriesfontein, it started bucketing down. We took shelter in a deli across the road where the owner proceeded to attempt to asphyxiate us with a wood fire that just would not burn.

Riding into Calvinia

This was my first visit to Calvinia. As we passed through town, I had a strange sensation of nostalgia......

I was named after my paternal grandfather. I never knew my grandfather, he died of a heart attack in the stands at Coetzenburg in 1961 during an athletics meet. My dad was just ten years old. As a young boy, my grandfather lost both his parents to the Spanish Flu. He was taken from JHB to Calvinia where he stayed with family. He was an outstanding student and I still have a beautiful book with poetry by Milton which was given to him when he was honoured as the top student in his matric year. The headmaster signed it and wrote a short message. Years later, my Grandfather and Grandmother were also married at the local Dutch Reformed church. He was in senior management at KWV in Paarl until the time of his death.

I'll come back to Calvinia.........

Canzius, have you considered fitting the Tubliss system into your wheels?

I used to be the puncture king, until 5 years ago when I fitted the Tubliss system, and I now look forward to punctures.
It is not an option on the 150 rear I believe?
Had it on my first 701 and had no issues with it

I thought Rally has narrower rims than standard R - one of the reasons why they are not tubeless. Does Rally still have 150 rim at the back?

Yes, only front narrower I think

Amsterdam has some lekker tracks planned to get us to Middelpos. I speed past turn offs again and waste a lot of time having to turn around several km further to get back on track

I really doubt it - otherwise they would just have left the rear tubeless. Given that this is supposed to be no compromise bike for offroad I would bet that the rear is narrower as well as that is superior for offroad (tyre choice, strength of the rim and protection from dings).

That doesn't mean that you might not be able to fit at least some of the 150 tyres on (I have ridden with 150 tyres on 690 rear rim which is 140 in a pinch - coincidentally the same area you are covering in this report), but if it is 140, then you could consider Tubeliss as I believe 690 / 701 also have 140 rims.

Whether you want to have Tubeliss on a bike that might be used at high speed on tar is different discussion, but I believe your tyre size might actually allow for Tubeliss. Maybe just check with KTM (or whoever changes your tyres, what is actually the rim size - of course only if you want to entertain Tubeliss option.

Hijack off - nice report BTW!  :thumleft:

Probably just so you can run tubes. The tubeless rear has an offset valve.

Google says 4.50" on R and 4.00" on Rally. Not sure if that means Tubliss will fit?
Bike still fitted with 150 tyre from factory

We had a great night at Gannaga Lodge. Drinks at the bar and then a lekker supper and lots of chatter. For the first night on the trip, some of us had our own rooms.

As expected, the next morning was a bitterly cold one.

I love taking pics in general, but especially on bike trips. I like having the visual reminder of what transpired on a trip and often look back on trips gone by and relive them through the images and video footage captured.

I like reading pics...

Incidentally, I had the same issue as 2TDan outside Steinkopf, lost my chain on a trip.

The common denominator is 2TDan, he was with me at the time  -  in future, I will give him a wide berth if I'm in a 200km radius of Steinkopf.

This group, on the rides we have done together have been very accommodating and even like to pose for pics  ;) @2StrokeDan specifically has perfected the staring into the distance or pointing at nothing specific pose.... :lol8:

That night I start feeling very ill and spent a large portion of the night on the floor next to the toilet. I vomited more than I thought humanly possible. When I do get to bed I'm shaking and shivering with fever gripping my body. By the time we have to get up to start the drive back home I am weak and don't have the strength to carry my luggage to the car.

I'm awake to see lots of snow in the Karoo, but for most of the trip I am sleeping and @Muffin Man has a lonely drive back .....

Huge thank you to @Amsterdam for arranging an epic trip!

Thank you to @Muffin Man for the drive down and back and @2StrokeDan , @BuRP , Marc and Wayne for being part of such a special trip. It was thoroughly enjoyable to ride with you guys again and I look forward to the next one!

All part of the story Danie…. Thank you! Was saying to Amsterdam that this was probably my favourite trip to date! Mostly because of the incredible riding terrain. It felt like I’d left the country to go ride in some Middle Eastern desert

Really sad that your trip ende prematurely, hope we ride together again soon!

I will be back for sure.

That night I start feeling very ill and spent a large portion of the night on the floor next to the toilet...

I never knew, sorry to hear that! When reading an ominous feeling crept up expecting to lead to you having caught Covid, but luckily you were spared this  :thumleft:

You must have caught a serious cold that day, welding mitts & all .... perhaps also pack a plastic bag like I do (& Marc)? I donned mine in Sutherland and this helped to fight off that biting wind, keeping me more comfy.
On this, I forgot to pack my long-sleeve T-shirts for this trip, and arriving at Cederberg Oasis that first night I was downright cold! Marc & Wayne to the rescue, with a warm inner & long-sleeve T ..... gents, know that without these I'd have frozen somewhere en route! My genuine thanks for lending me these, I'd have been looking for a Pep Stores otherwise everywhere along the way  :P :thumleft:

This was an awesome trip indeed, with (some new) friends in a remote barren part of our country I'd not seen much of, and definitely not in this way yet!
Noneking, a little apprehensive about his big bike (remember Amsterdam, which also owns a 890 Rally, choose his 701 for reason of "sand", ditto Marc who owns and adores his 950SE!) before the start, showed anyone how sand was to be ridden! Dunno, his tackle probably is on a par with BB's, he's unashamedly fast at times - and no, Marc & Amsterdam are by no means slouches. Kamanya, better invite these okes to Atlantis at some stage....  ;)
Henry mastered his 990 well too, I still find it amazing where some guys put these big things in to and over!
Dan will ride anywhere well, smooth and without any drama - a real pity that his chain cut his trip short: next time better please!  :thumleft:
Wayne screwed up a rib and is now ordered off his bike for a few weeks :-[ Sorry mater, but we'll meet again, and there will be something sent to CO for your attention  :P

Amsterdam and Marc both, thank you for organizing this trip, in various ways an eye opener!
Stunning landscapes and terrain to ride in, keeping everyone on his toes for most of the day, exactly what the doctor ordered.
Thanks to all for making this a special trip indeed!  :thumleft:  :thumleft:

Ek het Desert HT agter op. Jy sal waarskynlik meer kilos uit n Adventure kry. Ek het tans die RallZ op my 990 en hy hou ook goed. Dis egter sagter compound en sal nie so lank soos Adventure of Desert HT hou nie

As jy suid gehou het van Loeriesfontein is daar loop oor die Hantam wat jou by Nieuwoudtsville uitbring, en dan draai regs, die bordjie se "Moedverloor"  -  meeste hekke ooit.

I enjoyed reliving this trip through this report. I am still somewhat envious how you and Henry rode those big bikes in the sandy bits.  I will practice and next time I might be brave enough to bring the heavier bike.

If anybody read this report and would like to do it as well but not alone then I suggest you contact @WildWood , he regularly organises trips through that area.

It surely seemed to track nicely, and did not take the usual 5 hour big-bike time to plane after pull-away. it was on top of the sand within meters. It performed very well indeed. :thumleft:

Nox made an adjustment to my forks a few months ago and since then it has been amazing in the little bit of sand we get to ride in the Lowveld. Before that, I always felt like I wasn't quite as comfortable in sand as I had been on the 790R

Ek het dieselfde ervaring gehad, so twee jaar gelede.

Thanks for an awesome report Canzius. It was so much fun riding with you guys. Besides Namibia 2019, this ranks with the best of Mark’s trips. I was smitten by the remoteness and beauty of Jan-Lucas’s daily routes.

Jy vergeet ek het nog die standaard tank op, nie ń HPN brandstof depot nie.
Enigiets meer as 200 km is dicey vir my.
Maar die trip wil ek doen. Virseker.

Ek het nou net so oor die 1600km op die kaart, maar wil darem nie net ry nie. Ken n paar mense langs die pad waar ek sal wil aangaan, so ek sal bietjie wil skaaf

To sum up the petrol situation in that part of the world:
Fill up at Lutzville
Lutzville to Koiingnaas – 248 kilometers since last fuel.
From there to Komaggas 88 kms and refuel again.
Komaggas to Oewerbos on the Orange river is 220 kms.
We had requested the kind people at Oewerbos to have some fuel for us which they did.
Oewerbos to Steinkopf for refuel is 97 kms (total 317 kms since last fuel at Komaggas).
Steinkopf to Klein Pella - 222kms.
Refuel at Klein Pella
Klein Pella to Pofadder – 50 kms, refuel.
Pofadder to Louriesfontein – 234 kms, refuel

Dankie vir 'n great RR Noneking.

Sal dit self graag wil doen.  :ricky:

So bietjie bekommerd oor die reik afstand - klink/lyk of petrol few and far in between is.

As jy nie omgee, sal jy asb jou track met my/ons deel?

Dankie, hoop daai bug het jou nou al gelos?  :thumleft:

Ek het Lutzville- Springbok met ‘n HP al gedoen.

13 liter in tenk
6 liter in bladder.
2 x 2 coke bottels petrol.

Eish...great report and as usual, great pics.
Was there 10 days ago to test the CRF300 and had a ball....even easier than the DR over pretty much anything the trail threw at us, even with my relatively mediocre riding ability.

Gladdens my heart to see Nomad Bike Bags well represented on a proper trip....!

Wow!!! Fantastic trip and reports. I have done probably 70% of this route on my 950 when I still lived in CT. Thanks for a great trip report as always. :thumleft:
