Title: Weg! Ysterperd
Post by: Noneking on August 25, 2021, 06:12:19 pm
Anyone seen a copy of this? Most of the SA biking publications have been a huge disappointment with the same boring content and ads every month…….but I’ve always enjoyed the Weg! offerings…….

Even has @michnus ‘s wife on the cover

Hope it's not too expensive - bought a "normal" Weg magazine recently, thought they were like R35... no R90!

All magazines are crazy expensive these days. I have stopped buying most brands. I can get first hand information on most topics on this forum.

All Netwerk 24 magazines are very expensive
Is this a once-off, or monthly magazine ?

Currently, twice yearly

Except if sales pick up and the demand justifies that it appears more frequently

Our friend and long time member Luckystriker is the brains and driving force behind this.
And as much as he would hate me for punting it: please buy it and support our passion for biking.

Excellent - looking forward to it, I think for the fact that they're willing to alter the frequency of publication based on content and demand, it will be worth the extra few bucks. Let's support it. :thumleft:

I did not realise he is the editor.    He is a true adventure rider. It will be interesting to see how he keeps the interest of  the twat suite , leatt wearing, empty panniers on bike, R& P Covid posting, "buga mina" type rider,  that rarely goes offroad with their bikes.

Same here, hence I fell off my high barstool!
No wonder then that no normal people will buy it however doctors will, for their waiting rooms - safer, those are low couches normally.
Will drive up their fees I'm afraid...  ;)

If this version will be as packed with info, go-to places and bike stories as the old WEG! was, then R130 is reasonable for the times.

Some pay much more for a 750ml bottle of wine that lasts them a shorter time than the mag, and teaches you zilch.

I know its going to seem finiky but they must just make sure that they can use the word "Weg" as long as I know it has been trademarked.

My companies name is Media Alliance, but there is an Alliance Media who owns all sorts of publications.. one day my company got served with court papers in error, the whole court case was over the use of the word "weg" especially when used in conjunction with travel and adventure specifically for a publication..

Why still paper?
Why not move it online with a pod-cast like youtube channel where you discuss the topics in person?
And allow folks to join the stream on a monthly basis where you can interact with your viewers?

The alternative will be an ever-increasing magazine price

Paper makes for a long feedback cycle (knowing what your readers want)
By the time it's 'hot off the press', it's old news already

Once I've read the magazine, it's read.
It's not like an old stroker mag from the 90's where ... well you know.. >:D

I can enjoy a story book on a kindle. But anything with pics or graphs or tables (ie magazines and text books) has to be the real thing. That reminds me I should update my Recently read list

Currently a yearly publication, but I'm pushing for twice a year.
Ideally a quarterly mag, so that the quality doesn't suffer, and that readers don't get fatigued by a monthly mag

Magazines cannot compete with digital when it comes to news and current issues. This magazine won't try to sell you stuff. It deliberately doesn't contain a single advert - though there are two promotional pages for other magazines that you might like.
What it does better is curate the best content and deliver it in a satisfying, tactile and highly portable package
It also has a strong human element behind it that isn't always prevalent on websites

I dont mind the adverts. Maybe make the adverts bike related and place them all in the back. People are constantly asking whete can I buy this in Pta, where can I service my bike in Durban etc. Would be nice to have a bike specific yellow page section in the back so to speak

I know nothing about printing magazines, but I do know that up to now the huge "adventure" bikes is always featured the most.

Even with this mag, LS, you guys feature Deon Meyer and boring man, perpetuating the idea that "real" adventure on a bike comes from GS BMW's.

What about changing tack, and going in a new direction of lighter, more robust travel?

Feature our own Ri, and Noneking's trips.

I would even be willing to take my instamatic and do a Stellenbosch Swartberg pass 4x4 and back as a daytrip, and bring you some negatives to develop.

....and then everybody wonders why forums lose their essence after a while.
It's not the newbies that kill a forum; it's the old dogs that piss on all that is not to there liking or personal preference.

Het sopas my kopie gekry by ons plaaslike Spar.

Welgedaan LS!  :thumleft:

So ek sien dit as money well spent.

As dit te duur vir jou is moet jy dit asseblief nie koop nie want die volgende uitgawe is klaar goedgekeur, maar hy gaan tans eers oor 'n jaar verskyn - this time maybe less aimed at newbies and more towards experienced riders.

@Welsh you must maar use the Google translate masjien

I am trying my damndest to decrease the price and also increasing the frequency. I can’t see it ever dropping below R100, though, not with the state of print at the moment, but maybe I can increase the page count to offer you more value for your money.

Thanks everyone for your support.

I'm thoroughly enjoying my copy, thanks.
I didn't even bother to look at the price. I, and I'm sure many others, spend much more money on things much less worthwhile...
