Title: KTM dilemma
Post by: chicco on August 26, 2021, 11:08:11 am
Privilege to have to following dilemma, maybe some help from the forum could point me in the right direction. Last bike was a 990 ADV R.

2019 KTM 1290 ADV R 11500KM - R209 000.
2022 KTM 890 ADV R - R239 000.

In the last 20 years I had 4 x 990'S, 1x KLR and a Honda CRF 250 and did various trips around Southern Africa and also a lot of technical one day rides. I did most of the RR's yellow routes and also long trips on secondary roads with SWAMBO and luggage on the back. I rate myself as a competent adventure rider with some enduro experience. I have been bike less for the last 5 years.

My risk appetite for serious adventure and technical stuff is a bit lower now that I'm older, also the group rider don't interest me anymore, so what is my best KTM option?

If your choice is between only those two, then the 890R by a long shot. Much better balance adventure-bike wise, than the 1290, which leans too much towards GS1250.

"New" is always the better choice... ;)

Cannot remember your age. I have a 1290 R and have just got an 890R as well. The 890 is wonderful and light... Just dunno about a trip over 600k with the 890. If i had to have only 1- the 890 would win hands down

if you want to grow up and do more normal/mellow routes then its the 1290

if you want to replace the 990's its the 890.

If you're gonna be taking a pillion, doing big distances or less tech dirt road stuff....1290.

And also the power is quite addictive.   Every time I think Ive decided I'm going to pack it in and buy a 790 or 890, I ride the 1290 in anger and come home all buzzing and I can't bring myself to sell it

That's a tough decision, did a group trip two weekends ago, a somewhat vertically challenged dude made his 1290R seem like a 500 in the rough stuff and he smoked us all on the long gravel and tar bits, if I was going to ride alone it would be the 890, if I were to pillion it would be the 1290, good luck with your awesome dilemma :thumleft:

Go for the 1290. It really is something special. If you ride a bike for the joy of riding it is unmatched.

I sold my 1290R for a 790R.  Best decision ever made. And I pillion no problem.  I also don't need to go 180 .

1290 S sal ook doen as jy gaan pillion. Jy het mos al die rooi roetes al gery. Daai S loop met gemak rowwe goed as hy moet met die regte bande. :thumleft:

Ya. I've found if you have the balls to go for it, and the skill to hang on, the 1290 will do more than most give it credit for.

In hindsight, I should have bought a 1090 last year - R169 000.............Could have fitted all the extras and still come in under R200 000.

Yes, like a superbike's power, it is addictive. But we are talking adventure riding and then I can only see the extra kilograms, and even the power, to be a real drag.

890 for sure
More than enough power
Crazy good offroad
2600km in 7 days on mine a couple of weeks ago. No problem with long distance comfort.

Ö.and noÖ. a 990 canít keep up with it on dirt or tar

Your thoughts on the 1290? cant now remember if you had one or looking at buying one....the new 2021 blue model is a but steep for my allowed budget.

Monster bike. Iíve not spent enough time on it to give an informed decision. Felt big and heavy, preferred my 1090 at the time

Chicco we 2 totally different people, miles  apart in everything, except in owning a KTM 990 adventure. I decided I am too old, and needed to slow down and went for another type of bike altogether.

What I have learned, is get what really blows your hair back. If you feel you can handle the 1290 go for that. I think the 890 is great and if I go back to a KTM, then I shall go for the 890, but I am vertically challenged, and not that great a rider.  In a different life, there would be no way I wouldn't go for the (new)1290. Too much power is almost enough :ricky:

My view is that unless you are regularly doing some really hard offroad riding, the 1290 will be more comfortable and more fun most of the time. But I agree that if you find yourself not taking the more adventurous route because the bike is too heavy or difficult to handle, then it is the wrong choice.

If only I had the talent of that NZ guy......the problem is I start out doing adv rides and always en up testing my skills on technial stuff.....all the youtube videos also doesnt help.

I ride mostly tar and none of the big adv bikes are as much fun as the 1290 - very powerful!
I've taken the 890 for a spin, but was happy to ride home on my bike
If doing more adv riding, I suppose the 890 is an excellent bike

so if you already have a 1290 what will your 2nd bike be? 690?

Does it have to be KTM? If you already get your adrenaline fix from the 1290, then you can look at something capable and reliable (Japanese) for a second bike. I also have a Honda XR650L and reckon it's a good combo.

A 500 and then the 1290 becomes the 2nd bike.

if you are a multi-bike person, I wouldn't limit myself to KTM

I've had more than 1 bike and it's too much hassle for me
