Title: KOB INN - Former Transkei
Post by: Vis Arend on November 01, 2021, 09:43:23 am
A short ride report, or rather a longish photo report.

A while back a group of guys from East London arranged a get together at Kob Inn in the former Transkei.   The wife and I was invited to join the crowd and we happily accepted the invite.  For R650 per person for lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast, it was a no brainer.

The weather forecast the week before the outing did not look promising, the forecast was heavy rain on the Saturday, the day of the event.  Hopes were however high that it would change, and indeed, by Wednesday it looked great, only heavy rains the day before were forecasted.

Saturday arrived and the wife and I departed from King Willim’s Town to meet the East London lads at Kei Mouth.  We had real heavy rain the previous day and night, we hoped that the gravel roads would be reasonable dry.
The 1st stretch was tar, but as soon as we hit the gravel the heavy rains the previous night was visible.  The further we rode the worse it got.  It was rideable, but you had to concentrate.  With a couple of slip and slides and near mishaps, we arrived safely in Kei Mouth.

A few photo’s to Kei Mouth.

We arrived a tad earlier than anticipated, had a Sammie and I could not resist a spin on the beach before we went to the ferry where we waited for the rest of the group from East London.

The weather was just great.

The group arrived, we greeted and then we boarded the ferry to cross the Great Kei River into the former Transkei.

From there the 1st few kilometers are tarred, then the typical Transkei Road awaits you, potholes, rocky and ruff at places, not to mention the “wildlife”, read, donkeys, cattle, pigs and the normal taxis and overloaded Transkei bakkies.  The former we like, the latter not so much.

The scenery however was just stunning, lush green over the mountains and into the valleys.  The recent good rain was visible.

Photos (plenty) from the route to Kob Inn

We all arrived safely at Kob Inn, booked in and had a good time.

Just after arrival we received a typical mutton stew on rice, freshly baked bread and some salads.
Later the evening at the bar area, pub snacks were serviced, then the main meal arrived, a sea food buffet.   Savoury rice, seafood cocktail, mussels, prawns, calamari, curry fish, baked fish and oysters.  This was complimented with a define cheesecake as pudding.  The food was excellent.

A good evening was had my everyone, some later disappeared to their rooms for a well-deserved rest, and a few thought it good to suffer a little longer.

A good night rest was had and after a nice brekkie the different groups departed, each to their different destinations.

The road back was for most a non-event and all from our group arrived safely home, albeit one mishap in one group, but they also eventually arrived safely with minor scrapes and bruises.

Ready for departure.

The little mishap.  Diffie can comment further on this incident.

Loved your report a lot, as I love the Wild Coast ( Transkei area ) with its beautiful scenery, simplistic infrastructure and quirkiness  :thumleft:  Oh,and it offers some of the toughest, undulating, scenic plastic bike trials as well  ;)

Thanks for the RR.  I recently did the Sea to Sea enduro which started and finished at Kob Inn.  Coming from Namibia the greenery, rivers and forests there was just mind blowing, amazing area that.

You South Africans really have a beautiful country.

Thanks for a lekka RR. One of my all time favourite trips was doing the Wild Coast Eco trail through the TK. That area is probably the thing I miss most in SA. From the age of 5 we used to have a family holiday house in Haga Haga. Best memories :thumleft: :thumleft:

Thanks, and yes, the Wild Coast has some of the most pristine and beautiful places you can think of.  From the bottom to the top, but you must know your way around, it can be very dangerous if you do not know your way around.  It is actually a pity most of it is "lost" to the younger generation.

Kob inn is the best venue and value for money on the adventure calendar. It’s the one I will not miss!

Thanks for the ride reportVissie. Those smaller bikes are impressive.

We had a few punctures on our ride but nothing too serious.

Till next years Kob InnRide.
