Title: Which adventure helmet????
Post by: basilpeetz on November 16, 2021, 12:03:31 pm
It is time to replace my helmet. I have really enjoyed my Xlite X-551 but it is getting a bit long in the tooth now and the rubbers are starting to perish. Also older than the suggested 5 year life span. his thread is not to ask which is the best helmet to consider as it will just open a big can of worms :ricky:
What I am asking is feedback on what helmet fellow Wild Dogs have and what the likes and dislikes are of that particular helmet. Will assist in giving me a better overall view of what is on the market.
Thanks in advance.

I moved from your exact helmet to a O'Niel Sierra 2 and then to a Bell MX9 Adv.
The Sierra was just trash. It looks pretty cool but the build quality was terrible, the inner sun-visor scratched on the inside of the helmet within a week...just avoid. There are a number of copies of it being sold under all sorts of names.

The Bell was the opposite experience. Yes, it's a noisy helmet but it's very open and well-ventilated. More so than the Nolan but with the same wind noise. I've had mine for nearly 3 years now and the build quality is holding up very well. Still feels like a new helmet. Mine is the "Snow" version (I wanted the colour) and doesn't have MIPS, but it's exactly the same as new newer versions.

My next helmet will be something quieter though. The Bell is great when you're fighting sand in the heat but earplugs are a requirement on the highway.

I use the Shoei Hornet ADV helmet. Think the same one Brett Tcaks uses.

Haven’t used anything else before so cant compare it but I like it a lot.

The helmet accommodates glasses, sun or normal. So that helps. It handles wind very well. Standing in the wind, I never get the strong wooosh from the wind as it picks up the peak of the helmet. Side ways or while looking up into the wind, it doesn’t put a lot of strain on my head.

It is a tad noisy though. Noise goes away when I open my visor.

Now I again cannot wear the Arai TX3 Dual  or 4 - it presses in the wromg places for me - in the end I bought an AGV AX-8 Dual - and I liked it so much, when I needed another helmet, I bought the AGV AX-8 Dual EVO - and I believe they are on the AX-9 now.
Whats to like - incredible field of vision, its the widest field I know of - extremely comfortable, removable inner, to wash, and its incredibly light at 900g or so?
Whats not to like - the AX-8 suffers from a weird vibration of the peek at post-highway speeds (not that you would do that, obviously) and it flexes and eventually cracks and breaks at the mount on either side. There is no centre support due to the visor. I replaced 3 peeks on my first helmet (OK, I broke one when I dropped the helmet on it) and I glued 2 strips of plastic in the newer EVO as soon as I got it, never had a moments trouble since then - eith vibration or cracking.
I also believe this was rectified on the AX-9 - I have not seen one to confirm though.
I also use an Arai MX helmet with goggles and it fits perfectly - so no idea what the TX problem is....
My 22c....

Talk about field of vision, I can’t see the side of my visor on my Shoei Hornet ADV. So it is also really wide

+1 for the Arai.

I’ve had that and the new Shoei Hornet.

The Shoei is a bit better at high speed tar and ease of visor change, but everything else the Arai is better. Try one on and every other helmet you ever pick up will just feel a little plasticky and cheap.

Stay away from the Shoei Hornet Adv Navigate

At first it's amazing but after an hour or so, I (and other owners from a Google search) experience a sharp pain in the one ear.
On day 3 of my last 6day trip, my ear hurt so badly, i could barely remove my helmet after a days riding.

So now I'm sitting with a moer expensive helmet that I can't use.

Have a look at the Shark helmet.
Very good drop down visor and peak system, they even come with a set of goggles you can run with Carl Zeiss lenses.

Worth the cost as well.

As long as you have an Arai shaped head.  :thumleft:

Give it 2 weeks and it'll chill out.  Mine was also super tight, but thats what reduces road noise.  Fits like a glove now. Can wear it all day.

Hei Ore, moenie so negatief wees..... trim net daai een wapper?
Jy het dan twee, kom nou man, effens biki minder is ook oraait....  :lol8:

I also have an Arai here.... which was fine in the beginning but is perpetually parked now because it proves a shite thing, hurts also.
My take on it is I don't have an Arai-shaped head, so I avoid them like the plague now...

Here's what you do - and keep in mind I had to do this out in the Transkei field once (with a rock).
Take a rubber or plastic mallet and place the helmet on a folded towel or the like, and moer the irritating area from the inside until 'better' shaped!
"Maak hom sag" met ander woorde..... werk soos n bom, en ja, da's amper n pun  ;)
Jy het die ding nou tog alreeds, so moer hom into submission sodat jy hom kan gebruik!

I was spoilt now in Australia with MXstore  (https://www.mxstore.com.au/) and  AMX Stores (https://www.amxsuperstores.com.au/) so I could fit all the new adv helmets that I have always wanted to try one after the other.

I have always wanted an Arai however they do not fit my head.
The new Shoei Hornet is horrendously looking.

I fitted a Bell and it was a perfect fit for me.

Then on a impulse I bought the LS2 adv helmet as it had the built in flip down dark visor. I am so sorry now I did not get the Bell. The price is right and the built quality.

I don't agree.
Do you even know Bell helmets?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Sports

One of the oldest trusted MX racing helmets. I love Shoei and race with a VFX - W, I rate the helmet. I think part of the high cost of Shoei and Arai is the fact that everything is replaceable.

The saying a $5 helmet for a $5 head, however their is a huge difference between a R800 Chinese helkmet and a R4000 Bell

It doesn't matter which helmet ( decent brand ) but if it doesn't fit properly then the most expensive helmet in the world is just as bad as cheap junk . Find a few reputable brands and try them all on , then you make a decision on which to buy .
For example , Shoei , Suomy , AGV are all good brands but don't fit me well at all , however Arai , Shark , HJC all fit very well .

I have the Airoh Carbon Commander, about three years old now:

As mentioned earlier: It's quiet, very light, very comfortable and well worth its price, in my opinion. IIRC, I paid just over R7k for it.

Hi Everyone,

In short I own a African Twin, my first adventure and road bike. Been enjoying the riding for the last five or so years. When I purchased the bike I also get her with Spirit DSV3 helmets. These have been reasonable but the general quality, noise suppression and wind buffering have not been great. Now I’m in the market for my next adventure helmet. So struggling to decide between Bell Mx9 and Airoh Commander. I also read that many of you are wearing ear plugs, I don’t generally as I have an intercom system, which my wife and I enjoy when riding together. So the question, I’m in the market for a mid-level adventure helmet, that is well ventilated (I reside near hot Komatipoort, and travel in and around Mpumalanga), but also reasonably quiet, without the need for ear plugs…  Any further suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

Quick update. Opted for the Arai Tour 4 and super impressed so far. Had to order the one I wanted from UK as could not find the Vision Grey version in my size locally but definitely worth the wait (and the few extra South African Ronds).

I experienced the same sharp pain in my ear the other day.
Only thing is, I was not wearing the helmet at all.

I now suspect the discomfort to be attributed to the continuous elevation changes of the Pyrenean ride, and not the Shoei.
