Title: Garmin Montana 610
Post by: BliknÍrs on November 22, 2021, 02:18:52 pm
I received a Garmin Montana 610.
Is it good for the motorbike?
What do I need, RAM mount etc to mount it on the bike properly.
Anyone on here that can help with hardware?
I also have 2 x Nuvi's which I think is even older. I have always wanted to mount one on the bike but never got so far it looks like they arent really suited for the bike.

What nuvis are they?

My best Garmin's I had was the old Quest and my 215w Nuvis. Newer had issues with the Nuvis at all, and they went through hairy situations, and rain and snot.

One is a 510. Very old - the square ones.
The other one is a lot newer and more rectangular. Might be a 710 -  use it in my car as it has tracks4africa on.
I dont have ram mounts for any of them.
I want to pick the best one and then get the hardware to take it on the bike with me.

Personally I think the Montana is a great Bike GPS, had a serious look at them when they came out

Perfect for biking. It is an E-Trax on steroids.

It looks like I need a universal type RAM mount and then some sort of a cradle for the GPS to sit in as it has propriety connectors on the bottom.
It changes via the USB so that is another option.
Nice thing about it is that it also takes AA batteries so maybe I dont even have to wire it.

If you do longer trips then wiring is the way to go.  Get the wired mount and enjoy it.  Those are great biking GPS's.

There are no long trips planned for now.
I would like to have it mounted more or less permanently for that long trip I am dreaming of, but it is not really necessary.

I've been using a Montana 600 on an AMPS rugged mount for 5+ years. It has been rock solid. It is getting long in the tooth, but still works perfectly for street routing and navigating to points on a map while off the beaten track or in the forest. I also use it quite often to upload a route from PC (via Garmin Basecamp) and then get turn-by-turn navigation for the route. I use the Garmin Topo maps on it.

I have a ball fitting on the handlebar, another ball fitting on the rugged mount, and a long RAM clamp arm between the balls.

Handlebar mounting ball and RAM long clamp arm for rugged mount.
