Title: BMW Part Prices - AAARRRRGGGHH!!!!
Post by: Zerc on February 20, 2009, 09:46:44 am
Due to my general ham-handedness I manage to break a fuel connector on my bike so it's off to Bavarian where they tell me what I need but the don't have it in stock and BMW SA doesn't have it stock. It's been back-ordered from Germany but that could take a while. I want my bike fixed so after a phone call to Auto Alpina I find out they they have stock so I  braved the R21 to Boksburg in the cage this morning where the traffic actually wasn't too bad and I now have the part.

The only problem is the price - R195! This is for what looks to me like a piece of moulded plastic with an o-ring, granted it's probably special petrol resistant plastic and o-ring but it still seems rather excessive. At least it didn't cost R500 although with my time and petrol it's probably over that. Oh well, nobody said biking was cheap

This is what is called a quick-disconnect and a right angle one at that. It does though look like the simple (male!) side (end?) and does not have the clever spring loaded mechanism. I am surprised it is not sold as one unit? If it is both for that price not that bad for BMW! Do lube it though   :o

The price is for the male part only. The female part is still fine,  I'd hate to think what it would cost seeing as it has metal and springs in it as well.

Hopefully, this is a lesson I'll learn from, stranger things have happened.

If its the fuel inline quick connectors.. I bought a male and female for R80 from Conrad.
But paid R3200 for a modified lube service for the Cruiser at McCarthy's  ... always have your own jelly with you ... these oke's will do you dry

That is the advantage of having BMW (or someone else) work on your bike.

They break it ...they pay for it ..they drive to fetch it.

There's a small black plastic clip that clips to the handlebars between the clamps to stop the metal rubbing the brake pipe and wearing through.

I got my bike without this clip so when I enquired about a replacement I nearly collapsed.........over R500!!! I told him I'll be using isulation tape

I've always had the agents do the stuff I needed doing under the tank.
They're trained in the tricks and have all the tips.
I just group a number of things to do while the tank is off...
It saves in the long run, I'm sure.  8)

Spoke Wheel front      R  R1600 new from Yammie,
Consumables              R   ???? You possibly wear off a couple of microns from your spanners
Labour                        R R200 to lace the wheel, maybe 2 hours of your own time
Vat                             Included in above

Yeah fooking stoopid design not to have bashplate as OEM - lucky you did not puncture your oil cooler or filter - also as naked and vulnerable as they come. One can only but be cynical and think they did this on purpose.

Not just BMW. The prices of bike parts are mad. Go look at prices for fourstroke offroad pistons( KLX KTM etc.). Those okes that price the stuff must rook something bigtime and get away with it.

I am in this position right now, broke the quick connector last night, drove out to Bavarian to get the "new" metal replacement male part. I nearly threw up when I got the price:  R321!!!!

What the hell is happening here???

To cap it all off... came back home in a hurry, while fitting the new unbreakable part, I slipped and broke the bottom one clean off (the one shown earlier in this feed, connecting the two sides of the tank). So I just went to work with the cage, and now look for alternatives. I refuse to spend R1000+ on replacing all of them.

Bike's got 135000km, everything seems to go brittle now.

I'll follow this advice...

Just spoke to the folks at Hydraulic Design Service in Strydompark... the Rectus connectors go anywhere between R20-50 for the male part (shown in my earlier pic).

If this works, and the part fits, there's going to be a scene...   :xxbah:

WHAT" the Rectum connectors go anywhere between R20-50 for the male part (shown in my earlier pic). "

But my best the 0.2mm thick 14mm dia wavy washers for BMW discs, must cost about a cent each,  buying R 11,50 EACH...

all parts are expensive period

no matter the brand or vehicle

example:

1.3 citi golf

distributor - R5500
carb - R3200

pirate part distributor - R 295
pirate part carb - R500

2nd hand from scrap yard distributor - R399
2nd hand from scrap yard carb - R500

i'm sorry that is just crazy prices for orignal vw parts  :o

True.

Just spent an hour browsing HDS' catalogue, and put together all the pieces and replacement "original" BMW fuel lines (60bar burst rating..!?) for R1100.

Includes all three quick connectors male and female, clamps, an elbow contraption.. will report back on the whole replacement (est cost using original motorrad parts = R3000-00). Just need to get Indian Red (black).. dunno what that is, but I'll get me some.  :toothy3:

what is the reason for this high pricing??

one thinks massive profiteering for one.

but i had this idea.  perhaps they price parts like this to stop people from buying all the seperate parts and building their own bikes???

:deal:
