Putsonderwater. There's a (fairly recent) ride report that shows it to be only a dis-used railway siding with abandoned houses all around.

Some of us were there the other day, witnessing the splicing of two Wild Dogs.

If you go to the annual bash at Boegoeberg, Gatsonderwater will be just up the road.

Is there a RR on this?

Bulembu, Swaziland.  Used to be called Havelock.  Also an asbestos mine.  Now used as a home for HIV orphans but the town centre (abandoned movie house, post office, club etc) remain very "ghost". Old houses rented out as rustic accomodation.  Fantastic DS country. http://www.bulembu.org/

Tessa Joughin, the photographer said of Gumtree Mill:
"This ruined mill in the once thriving village of Gumtree is said to be the highest sandstone building in South Africa.
There is a movement to try to restore it and the village for tourism."

Just noticed your post!
In the Lowveld (Slowveld) Mpumalanga there is an abandoned mining village called Masauli (26 00'15.88"S 31 04'33.19"E). Check it out on Google Earth.
Best approach is from Barberton, if you approach from Badplaas, it's a nightmare with road construction. The asbestos mine was shut down a few years ago and now the village is empty. There is a boom gate at the only two entrance points, no problem with the guards just say you passing through.
The village is maintained, so it's not quite like Kolmanskop but a short walk around is crazy, empty school, rec club, golf course, clinic etc.
There are several great off road routes around the Nelspruit/Barberton/Swazi boarder area shout if you need some help.

Cave Girl and myself were going to sleep over in Putsonderwater last year, but had to skip it due to bike problems. We did go there, however, and soon found that although the town really is a ghost town, it is also the crossing point of two major roads in the area, so it is by no means quiet. There is traffic passing through it almost constantly.

I live less than 100m from the N1 highway and I don't hear it at all.
Stop 500m from the N1 in the Free State and you'll hear every vehicle that passes.
I once slept over on a farm near Kokstad.  We were at least 500m from the road.
I couldn't sleep all night because of the passing traffic noise.

Yesterday was a fail, didn't quite realise that the last stretch of the road was slippery mud. After a few km's, and a couple of near falls, i decided to turn around and avoid having to explain to the insurance how my bike ended up at the bottom of the mountain. Need to sharpen my off road abilities and skill first before heading to Diepgezet again, or maybe just go on a sunny day.

Must say though, the road between Barberton and the border is amazingly beautiful. Slow winding roads in the mountains and plantations. It was also great to see the old cable cart system between Swaziland and Barberton, must have been something to see when it was operational. The mist also made for a wonderfully relaxing trip, makes you feel as though you are the only person left on the planet.

Will be heading back that way on a dryer day

Awesome pic. I'm staying over in Diepgezet at the end of the month. I phoned Kromdraai just down the road and they said they don't do camping any more due to the elephants, the guy put me in touch with someone who said we can camp right near Diepgezet along the river, apparently right by the water fall. If that fails I'm sure one could camp sommer somewhere out of site. Thanks for the up-date on the road, we'll have to sharpen our off-road skills before we get there.

Thinking of going to the ghost towns instead of touring KZN's battlefields for the next 10 or so days. Its a last minute thing, and quickly looked at a possible route that adds up to around 4 500km

Town on the route are as follows (just not in order)
1   Bonnefoi
2   Copperton
3   Daviesville
4   Diepgezet
5   Drazilville
6   Gumtree
7   Italian POW Village
8   Leydsdorp
9   Putzonderwater
10 Greylingstad
11 Petersburg

Seem to have found most of them on the map with some help from the internet, as well as the co-ords given above

Not final yet, still need to decide between battlefields or ghost towns. At this stage, I want to ride. just need to finish working for the night

What do you guys think?

I agree, a ghost-town tour would be nice to do and also to stealth camp there, but visiting a ghost town one only really experience the feeling by visiting it solo for the first time, Putsonderwater to me was a nice experience doing it by myself.

From Kenhardt to Putsonderwater the first 30km can be a bit corrugated and sandy but after that the road is fine :thumleft:

At Putsonderwater, also walk to the old church and nearby, see the stone-built 'skaapkrale' with the word PUTZONDERWATER on it.

Here the sheep waited for the trains  - final destination: The abbatoirs in Johannesburg

Was at Diepgezet today, very nice, but not as well kept as previously stated

Still nice to drive around and see the place, all buildings still intact and you can make out how the gardens used to look.

Met some people there that are going to clean the place up and convert it to a resort, they are going to start mid january. So i think that it might not be as accessable as currently

So go and have a look if you can before then!

I forgot my camera, but will be heading that way again soon

I'd also like to find out where the Italian POW "village" near Barrington is.

I went to this place in about 1986 when doing the old "National Hiking Ways" Outeniqua Trail.  As far as I remember, it was simply a row of 2 or 3 houses on one side of a short strip of tarred road (with street lights etc) surrounded by forest.  Some of the houses had friezes (little pictures) painted above a dado rail around the walls, which were apparently a big deal.  The "village" in the forest was well worth visiting.

I think it was near Karatara forest station (maybe even part of the forest station now).  I can't find the old Outeniqua trial map (I thinkt here was one done by Peter Slingsby) or any info about the place.

Anyone ?

Apparently it is Farleigh forest station now (thanks to local meuseum)

I got the news letter of june 92 (41) if someone wants to have a look.

According to it there were approx 94 000 italian pow's around the garden route area.

In other words, more camps

I live less than 100m from the N1 highway and I don't hear it at all.
Stop 500m from the N1 in the Free State and you'll hear every vehicle that passes.
I once slept over on a farm near Kokstad.  We were at least 500m from the road.
I couldn't sleep all night because of the passing traffic noise.

In GP there is a constant traffic drone. You guys are just used to it. If I stay over in Joburg I get woken up at 4am when it starts.

Anything in the Western Cape? I've been out to an old disused diamond mine in Namibia, turns out there was a ghost haunting it... With an AK47.

Made tracks pretty quickly.

Greetings all, I am just about to start working on a book documenting all the ghost towns and towns that are on their way to becoming ghost towns in South Africa.
This thread has been a godsend, there were quite a few of these towns that I did not have on my list.

You are welcome to have a look at my map (so far), more have to be added, if you know of any that I don't have on the list your help would be greatly appreciated.

Also if you would like to find out more about the project and you are on the "Facebook" then you can check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/ForgottenNationZA (https://www.facebook.com/ForgottenNationZA)

If any of you have the GPS co-ords for these place and would like to share, please do  ;)

Mariepskop's, Moraba, Italian POW village near Barrington, Jamestown near Barbeton

Thanks, Shayne.

Jissie mannie.

So 100km van springbok af.

Daars is darem bietjie positiewe nuus. Transhex het nou weer begin myn by Kleinzee.

Was laasjaar daar gewees.  Moet op jou bucket list wees.

Greylingstad - or more acurately, NW of Greylingstad on the edge of the town - huge abandoned village in the Kloof - check it on Google Earth - S26 44 13.6 E28 45 00.3

Does anybody know why this village was abandoned?

I was there and a old man told me, that before people living there always were on foot, or bicycle's. Later on they got cars, but the houses being in the mountain could not be reached by car so they move down to the valley, were they now stay

Ahh - seems likely that - the access up there was narrow and steep from memory...

Thanks for the info!!
