I just arrived home last night from a solo 1900km roundabout work related trip to Upington. Traveling on lonely roads is always good. Good in the term that you will be spending quality time with yourself.
A very talented young woman once performed to me the Cranberries’ song titled “Zombie” Sitting close to me while she lead herself with her 12 snare guitar With my one hand on her guitar I felt the accords and with my other hand on her back to drink in her powerful voice. It was an experience I will always remember. So this song is very special to me and I played it over and over in my head…
My trip actually started in Bloemhof. I had really no idea which roads I would take. Although I did some goodle earth fly overs I decided to basically toss a coin when the roads fork. I had some errands to run and could only leave Jozi around 11. So I took the boring N14, tar all the way to Bloemhof.
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?
The bridge just outside Bloemhof

Somewhere on the roads close to the Vaal river

My roadbike got a big bladder, not me, so I had to stop before her. This two pics was taken somewhere between Christiana and Warrenton. Did not care, did not worry, just loved it.

Entering Warrenton I decided to look for a B&B. Found this lekker place. For the average price of R300 I had this whole house for myself. DSTV, 6 bed, 2 bath, underfloor heating, pool, stoep with view of the Vaal.

For the romantic winter nights.
Bought some take aways and polished a bottle of Durbanville Hills Bastion.
But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...
Around 9am, after breakfast, I was on my way. Warrenton was still sleeping and probably cant understand the city dwelwer’s rush. I was on a mission, I had roads to discover.
Deserted streets
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0089-2.jpg)
Petrol station was open

North Cape’s version of the Feral Horses.

Crossroads, I took the tar to cover distance
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0105-3.jpg)
And encountered this loooong boring tar stretch
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0107-2.jpg)
Other reason why I love a powerful DS bike, it makes mince meat of boring distances. Not bad as its against a headwind
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0111-2.jpg)
I sign post flashed past…Danielskuil….ancors, turned around, went for a look and see. Just other small town. Opened my map book for the first time. There is a gravel road leading to Postmasburg. It’s a gem.
Some pics of that road
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0113-3.jpg)

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...
Postmasburg come and went. On the other side of town.
Took the turn off as per Goodle earth flyover. Huh? Sorry sir, this road is closed to the general public.
Fooking mine
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0122-1.jpg)
They sure are big in safety.
In return for fucking up this area they are now building a wide gravel road
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0124-3.jpg)
And this is what I though of that road
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0125-2.jpg)
Oh, they moved the road I was looking for 10km to the south and I was a happy chappy once again. My next waypoint in the map in my head was the mountains in the distance
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0131-1.jpg)
Why did the Meerkat family cross the road?
Took some pics while standing. Oh and for the anti-standing lobby group, screw you, its lekker to take pics that way. Look ma its me
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0135-2.jpg)
And my dust
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0132-1.jpg)
And the front wheel
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0134-2.jpg)
Nearing the mountains
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0139-2.jpg)
And now the fun starts
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0141-2.jpg)
Glad for this sement slab. Beautiful surroundings

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...
Upington is somewhere ahead, Boegoeberg somewhere to the left.
Arrived in Upington and went to my pre booked B&B. Lovely place
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0159-1.jpg)
Finished what I had to come for and took tar all the way back.
In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...
She is a good girl, carried me well and never missed a beat. Always willing to give more. Thank you.

Nice-looking road up that mountain!
Thank you for sharing. Somehow these solo trips to the middle of nowhere and back is magical
-
Thank you all for the nice comments. :thumleft:
I do not have a GPS. I use maps and google earth. Normally when I go on trips like this I give myself waypoints in my head. These are usually the bigger towns or a landmark like a mountain. From Warrenton my next waypoint was Postmasburg. I had 3 hours to get there. I know for a fact that there are a lot of gravel roads (to the farms) other than the normal tar routes in the Northern Cape. I just ask a local in the small towns between my waypoints for a gravel road to the next town. The northern Cape people are extremely friendly and helpfull.
I love it but I know in terms of accidents etc its a hell of a risk. Should something happens I will probably be a piece of biltong by the time they find me. But they will find me with a smile on my face.
I do not want to spoil your Boegoe 2009 trips so I will not give out tips ets for your Bash planning. :deal: Go and explore.
-
What a pleasure to do a trip like this ARR... :thumleft:

Every ride is an adventure - you sure bring that out in your pics and report. Thanks Ama for taking the time and thinking of us poor plebs! :thumleft:

Some information on the mine.

Very cool report, some lekker places, thanks for sharing :thumleft:
-
Veery nice Ama.
Well written.
-
A hauntingly lonely road to some-where, without commitment, wanting to be no-where, but alone, is a dream for most.
Thanks ... Ama Ride Ride ... for allowing many of us to share your thoughts and vision through this excellent ride report and pictures.
Keep your feet on the pegs and your eyes on that next horison.
-
Little did I know that this RR would be my last on the most awesome bike I even owned. In the 3 years I owned her and doing 1000's kms solo all over SA she only failed once to carry me safely home. Death battery. (thanks Plottie and billbob)
She even carried me 250km far with a 50/50 mix of petrol/diesel in her tank.
A chapter in my biking life is now over and closed. The next chapter is a bit blank but I already started looking around and doing sums. Not much to chose from after you was spoiled by one of the best. ;)
-
Awesome Dude, did similar routes with Usurper recently on our nam/Bots trip.
Glad to hear pony has been so good to you. Whats next? Super10?

Ver in die ou Kalahari
Daar by die Malopo
Gee my die ou Kalahari
Die ou Kalahari bo
Wyd lę die eindlose vlaktes
Kameeldoringboom en sand
Eensame, vreedsame węreld
Die ou Kalahari land
Koor
Sonbesies sing in die bosse
Die hittige son te versmaai
Rooi Afrikaner osse
Sien jy om elke draai
Ver in die ou Kalahari
Daar sing die boere so
Gee my die ou Kalahari
Die ou Kalahari bo
Koor
Sonbesies sing in die bosse

Ama - we had a discussion last night amongst friends - had to do with memories and material goods.
Funny how the memories of friends, family and amazing trips like that stick with you forever and you can always refer back.... we are missing the bus here in life. True wealth and riches are not the material things (TV, Hi-fi's,cars, houses etc) but our friends, family and memories.
That RR of your was just pure lekker man............... I've read it before and read it all again now.............. like a good book!
Tell us when the next one comes up.... I'd like to subscribe as well!

-
That is what the Northern Cape is like boys!!!!!!
Nice RR, Ama!!!!
-
Ama, welkom in MY węreld. Ek bly in Kathu en werk elke dag op Sishen South ( sy nuwe naam is Kolomela Mine ). Jammer ons kon mekaar nie erens kry vir `n bier nie...volgende keer gaan ek en Hakbos jou voorlę!
Nice RR!!
Groete

Been browsing through my old RR's and this one caught my eye.
Ironically we are now living in Postmasburg and working at the mine who fooked up things as stated in the RR. And as I dont have a bike any more I used my quad to ride some of the same roads.
This pic was taken near the same spot as on in the RR
