It was my home for a year. I got similar pics of the bateleurs firing, but quality is bad as it was taken with a mik and druk.

Those Bateluers are awsome!

No G6?

I was also somewhat involved with these during '78 - '79.  Did you go to Smitsdrift with the initial testing ?

Names which come to mind: Capt. Skalekamp; Loot Harrison; Bom Boje; Samjoor Viljoen(mad mad bastard) and Staff Flippie (Q-stores)

Martin Schalekamp - good man.  Oh and Samil Viljoen - what a character....  His stories around a fire had a measurable effect on SAB's production at the time.  He was already a gunner in 1960, and still going strong in 1987.

Agree ... Capt Schalekamp was an absolute Officer & a Gent.  As for Viljoen ... maybe he'd mellowed slightly ten years down the track ... but eish as our SM (opsporings) each day was hell.  Fortunately he didn't accompany us to the border.  Stories from guys that toured with him are friggin scary.

I just missed Smitsdrift. I did the Lohatla run a few dozen times and Duku Duku as well.
Cmdt John MC Gregor was the project officer. I was his handlanger.

It was the D700 and a 24-70mm lens and SB-900 Flash for basically R1000 a day. Wedding Package.
Picked it up the Friday afternoon after 15:00, used the Saturday and returned it the Sunday before 12:00

Brings back mixed memories. 4 Field, Medium Battery, Airborne Artillery. Those G5 projectiles were my nemisis. Grab one of those over your shoulder and run a few km's will reduce even the strongest man to tears.

That last vehicle/pic was my office. The TA used to calculate the range and elevation and feed the co-ordinates to the gunners. Our vehicle was not quite as sexy as that. Ours was a box on the back of a Unimog.

Thanks for the pics, great seeing the equipment is still serviceable.

Jeez what a small world - I did my basics (1981) at 14 Field (32 Loc) and then Ops Surveyor and later Radar.  Viljoen was our battery WO and he gave us hell.  Schalekamp was a major by then.

Was their still an effective military post 90's as the compulsory two years ended in 1990? :pot:

Oke's use to say that you klaar in , have a hair cut, get a medical ,complete 3 months basics and then klaar out if you only did 1 year military service. :peepwall:
NCO's whom did 1 years service  completed their officers course through correspondence and received their pips in the the mail. :imaposer:

Today the criteria for acceptance into the military is that you are able to concentrate for 20 minutes non stop without worrying about food and sleep and be able to eat plenty garlic, beetroot and veggies for sustainable empowering of  colleagues.

Nowadays recruitment for hardened soldiers are often held at Grootvlei and Polsmoor.

Reading through the fred again I remembered an incident which happened about 3 weeks after klaaring in at 14 Field.

Gen Constand Viljoen was Chief of the Army or Defence Force at the time and he was an ex-gunner.

One morning on the parade ground the RSM told us that Gen Viljoen was coming to visit. Each battery was assigned a section of the camp to spit and polish.  We got the dirt road from the tar road to the gate.

WO Viljoen made us all leopard crawl the entire dirt road and pick up every little stone bigger than your pinky's nail and throw it into the bushes.

Needless to say gen Viljoen never pitched but we still had the smoothest dirt road in the world.

Nogtans lekker tye  :thumleft:
