Lourens, it's a Canon Ixus, regular mik en druk set on auto. Nothing special. The software is pretty clever though, sortd out the difference in light & stitches all together.

Ah, that's the info I'm look for.  That software must be pretty good to sort out the exposure across the different shots.  PS3 does not handle it that well.

I also have Autopano.  What's really great is that you don't have to sort the order or line up the photos.  The software automatically detects which photos belong where, joins them and sorts out the colours.  I have even tried to trick it by including a picture that is very similar but not part of the panorama.  It created the panorama without adding the foreign photo.  Pretty cool.  Even does the cropping for you too.

have a look at Microsoft ICE , free and works well

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ice/

I use Arcsoft Panorama Maker that came with a Digital camera years back. It allows you to fine tune the stitching process

Please post your panoramas, and give some info on where you took it, how many pics you stitched together, what software did you use and some of the tricks you used to get them.

I am no expert but love to play around with panoramas.

I took this one of Katse Dam in March 2010, 3 photos stitched together with Autopano Giga2.

How do you plan a series of so many shots?
Title: Re: Show us you Panorama Pic
Post by: Jughead on September 28, 2010, 10:05:00 pm
LOL.  It helps if you have a tripod.  Just overlap with about 1/3rd every time.  There were actually 18 photos (3 rows of 6) but for some reason Auto Pano dropped one.

Calitzdorp Spa.  5 photos.

Some where in Natal I think, can't remember . 180° so it must be about 7-8 photos.

Overlooking Robertson valley, Van Loveren in the left of the pic. Again 180° so it must be about 7-8 photos.

On a farm in the Swellendam district. Again 180° so it must be about 7-8 photos.

Natal, Inanda dam from the mountain directly north.  Again 180° so it must be about 7-8 photos.

MMC 2008 360° inside the worlds biggest tent.   Lots of photos with a 7MP mik&druk, must be about 16.

I mostly use PS3 with some manual fine tuning.

With the MMC one, how do you get it to blend so nicely when the people in the shots had to be moving around ???

Some manual work was needed because the software made a mess.  It took some work but it came out nicely in the end.

Some I took on the Otter trail last year - using Autostitch to stitch them

These are obviously beofre I cropped them - gives you an idea of how many images were used.  Autostitch needs about a 30% overlap to work nicely though.

Thanks!!

For the ones on top of the Rock I used an OLD Sony Cybershot 3.2MP mik en druk, it was my first ever camera and I bought it in 2003, and it still worls like a bomb today. No tripod, no planning, just snapped away on Auto, well this little camara does not have anything else but Auto

The ones at the Union Buldings and Rietondale Park I used a Panasonic FZ-18, also no planning, no tripod, also shot on Auto Setting. I am to stupid to try and figure out Shutter and Apenture     :-\

The last on of the Joburg Skyline I took last night. It was raining late afternoon and I thought it might make a good oppertunity if the rain clears up as the sun is setting. Not as nice as I hoped for, but nature is the boss after all hey?
With this I used a Canon SX210IS mik and druk, the FZ-18's battery was flat
For the first time ever I played around with the Shutter speed, and used a tripod. I set the shutter to 10sec to see what happens, and I think it looks ok for a first time with a mik & druk

I use Auto Pano Giga to do the stitching.

I love playing arournd with panorama's and the settings, but I really have no idea what I am doing, I want to save up and buy a proper camera and go for a course so that I can learn how to do this stuff better!

Hi

I use Photoshop Elements 8.
My problem is as follows: I select the photos I want to merge and then go to Panorama merge, all the individual photos open, but I then get the following message:
Error 1 : Unable to create Window
               OS error (1400)
ver w = new Window (res)

Why does this happen/what's wrong?
The irritating this is that it doesn't happen all of the time!!
Sometimes everything works fine, but about 60% of the time I get the Error message.

Any help/advise?

To start you HAVE to take the original photos with manual exposure settings so that the exposure stays the same over all photos.  I have also found that due to the fall off of light at the sides when using cheaper lenses you must overlap the photos about 1/3.

If you have PS then you can perhaps use a Gaussian filter to smooth out the sky but makes sure you feather the selection edge.

Do a auto focus, then switch to manual.

Learn how to set your exposure manually. Say f8 and adjust your shutter speed (looking at the --- +- --- in the viewfinder). Use the same setting for all the pics.

That is it.

Ditto on what Kobus Said

Go P Mode get the Reading dial that into M Manual Mode.

I Shoot a Hand pointing left as my first shot so i know where my Pano's START.

Then after 5 or 8 shots ,shoot Fist for the end of Pano.

The MOST IMPORTANT Thing is SHOOT in Portrait Mode not Landscape.

Works for me

Cheers

Wayne

Was going to ask why............. I suppose it depends on how much you want in the image top to bottom. Makes sense.

Portrait Pano

I learnt that about a year ago from a Leading Photographer

You will see the difference when it come to stiching and the software.....Much easier.

So when we going to do a Photo SHoot KOBUS ?

Another good point is not to take the photos at a wide angle to limit the distortion/lens vignetting around the edges of the frame, especially with cheaper lenses.

Zoom in to about 50mm and take lots of portrait photos and don't skimp on the overlapping.  Rather overlap too much than too little.

Technology is only as good as its user - don't sell yourself short - Photography is about composition, framing, colour, lighting, subject, depth, focus, contrasts etc. - Great stuff :thumleft:

I have gone to Kenton-on-Sea, all my life. My grandparents bought a little pondok there the year I was born (1979), so now that they have both passed away, my mom lives in the little house now. On me recent quick visit to SA in May, I made a quick 2 day trip to go and visit my mom in Kenton, I took some lekker pics there. The weather was perfect and with it being completely out of season and in the middle of the week, there was almost no people at all, it was bliss!!!

The awesome Kariga River, I have been up this river 100's of times!!!

This is under the bridge where the R72 crosses the Kariega at Kenton on the way to Port Alfred. In 2010 Marnus and I rode our bikes down to this exact spot. When we were young we used to jump off this bridge into the river, it is farking high when you are 12 yearsd old!!!

The next morning I parked at Middle Beach and took a walk all the way to the mouth of the Boesmans River, this is just before Shelly Beach, you can see the famous Carrige Rock in the distance
(http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n459/Sharkie_123/Panoramas/278.jpg)

Shelly Beach, one of my favorite spots in the whole world
(http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n459/Sharkie_123/Panoramas/281.jpg)

I then walked back to Middle Beach and took these pics of the pool where I learned to swim when I was just a little snotkop laaite!! Jirre, if I can have R1 for every time I cut my knees and feet on these rocks while jolling around when I was small..............   ::) ::) ::)

Here is the link to the review of "MS ICE" http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ICE/

The thing that I really like about it, is that it does a pretty good job of Bending the images you load into it, to try it's best to "overlay, merge & blend shades/colour" quite nicley. :thumleft:

@ Bring It On. Suspect I just came from your neck of the woods. Did some 4,000 km - hence the kaput tyre. Put the link for the pics etc in the mobile ride reports section (excerpt below). Some more panoramic shots at the link - they're a lot larger than the 500kb limit. Page 2 should cover your backyard.

Hi guys

Did a quick journal of our latest ride. Only have the iPad with me - so its on icloud. Here's the link:
https://www.icloud.com/journal/#3;CAEQARoQCKQDuWOFcYQGB5LUocrmbQ;B19D3EF6-B444-43E8-812A-1A0640CB7CC3 (https://www.icloud.com/journal/#3;CAEQARoQCKQDuWOFcYQGB5LUocrmbQ;B19D3EF6-B444-43E8-812A-1A0640CB7CC3)

Think it came out nicely. Has some pics, dates and route points...

Note: some of the images are quite large (16MB) if you click on them.

Cheers

w.r.t. your images being too large to post.... try using an "image resizer" (something like "FastStone Image Resizer" http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm ).

Most of them are free & this one is pretty easy to use. Resizing the images makes it a lot more user friendly for both posting & viewing. ;)

Those were shot with the Samsung S4's stock camera's panoramic function.

With my Canon 40D, I use the software that comes with the camera (ZoomBrowserEx or something like that)

If I can add my 5c worth:

P1: A favourite piece of road - B4 heading down towards Lüderitz, from Aus (after Klein Aus Vista). Yes it is tar - but, as far as I know is only road to
Lüderitz, and one knows one is heading for the sea)!!

P2: Fish River canyon from viewpoint- everyone has one of these.

P3: Graaf Reinett from the Valley of Desolation
