Some lucky chick on the forum wanted racks made for her brand new 690 and I offered to help out. What do you think of these? Taking them for powder coating soon.
-

maybe you can build the guys on x-challenges some subframes next :D
-
Haha....I checked Renier's XC out and thought exactly the same thing. We'll get there...

Lucky bloody chick ... First a 690E and then this.... I hope she is worth it. :imaposer:
-
Very nicely done. When does the orders open? :pot:
I have also seriously been looking at a 690. Have you checked of the subframe on the 690 will it be able to handle that extra weight over the back? I know the subframes can take quite a knock, but the load and vibration over a period of time might be outside the design of the frame. Like I said it is a very interesting prospect and that is the reason I am asking.
-
Oops, hit a snag when fitting them last night. Seeing they weren't built on the bike, but on a wooden jig, I was quite amazed that it actually fit! Problem is that the mounting holes on the frame is angled about 25 deg forward, so the things sticks up at a weird angle......back the drawing board again.....
-
Nothing a 4 pound hammer won't fix! :lamer:
-
Update: Even though the rack doesn't fit, it's going to be on a bike soon.....watch this space.
Here's a few pics of the side racks I built for the 690. Real dual purpose, they can take DirtBagz or any other soft luggage.
-
and some more....
-
Hi Groenie, what size steel is that you are using? Is it round bar or tube?
-
I recognise that 690.....very nice Leo Vince too. :thumleft:
-
Looking Spiff!!!
-
Mainly 16mm and some 12mm tube. The loops are 6mm round bar
-
OK, and the wall thickness? 2mm?
I'm going to have a go at building some racks for my KLR before the bash. I've taken the side covers off of the bike and am looking at building a pannier frame with aluminium panels where the side covers were, and integrate a tool tube into the contraption. I think the bike looks better with the side covers off, seeing as there is just a lot of empty space under there. Still in the concept stage though
-
Nice work there Groenie! :thumleft:
Can't tell from the pics - does the 690 have any sort of rear sub-frame?
-
Yes it has a subframe that ends about 10cm from the top mounting points of the racks, just behind the fuel cap.
-
Looks great Groenie, you selling these?Gives some protection of the rear right tank as well :thumleft:How about some radiator gaurds for the 690 as well.Keep up the good work :ricky:
-
Yep, I make and sell them. Hmmmmm.....radiator guards? I'll look into it.
-

They look cool and are hidden by the shrouds.

I met that chick at the Kzn Bash. Yip, she's worth it. Pity the guys were drooling over her bike more than anything else (as she pointed out) :imaposer:

Sorry I saw your post only today B.V.
A guy in PTA re-covered it for us, mainly to slice another cm or two off the height for the vertically challenged. My wife did +_3500km on it, up to 700km days and she did not complain...
