Title: Race to Dakar just screened the first episode in Oz.
Post by: Jaqhama on November 30, 2006, 05:25:01 pm
Well we've all just seen the first episode of Race to Dakar on ABC TV at 8.30pm tonight.

You don't want to know what the majority of riders on Aussie bike forums are saying about old Charley.

Here are a few of the more humorous comments...

Charley and Matt = Fat.

Race to Makars (McDonalds).

Hey I like this show, it makes me look thin and fit. As opposed to a fat old git. (And I feel like a much better rider now as well!)

How not to prepare to Race to Dakar.

If Greenpeace saw Charley with no shirt on, they'd tow him back out to sea.

Etc etc.

I've got to say that watching Charley and listening to him talk about entering the Dakar it's quite obvious he just isn't prepared for it.
He's just got no confidence in himself at all.
Many of us would look forward to it as a great adventure, he plainly seems terrified of the idea.
And his level of fitness in this first episode is just awful.
It's affecting his riding, his staying power and is, probably, the reason he keeps hurting himself.

The other rider Matt is little better. Did they have a "Fat Man does the Dakar" contest in the UK that we don't know about?

Aussie Simon Pavey is going to gain cult status amongst Aussie riders for his part in the show however.
People have already commented that's it's the only reason they will continue to watch the program.

And one poster asked if Charley stops complaining as the show goes on?...and the response from someone who already has the DVD was...No, he gets worse.
Oh dear.

No, apparently you casually mention it at a book signing in London and it starts to snowball downhill from there. :D  :D

Have you read the book? The poor bastard suffered for 12 month's preparing for the rally... Simon Pavey putting him trough them paces... no easy ride the desert - easy to judge  :?

That's the whole point mate.
Charlie is just not mentally equipped to do the Dakar, his whole outlook screams it.
He couldn't even do a 3 hour Hound and Hare FFS.
Every enduro he entered in episode one was a huge concern for him, when in reality you're supposed to be having FUN.
Charlie ain't having fun, Charlie is worried big time.
And what has Simon asked Charlie to do that a 100 thousand blokes don't do every weekend all over the world?
And Charely has been riding bikes his whole life, he's not a newcomer to dirt bikes at all.
Riding in the desert is easy by the way, it's just not easy when you're in a fast paced rally and you don't have time to rest and you're full on the throttle.
Blasting up and down endless sand dunes is a whole lotta fun, nothing better. :D
You just have to know what's  on the other side before you crest.

Charlie's big problem is that A; he's terribly unfit. Which could be fixed in less than two months if he'd get himself a proper endurance trainer and got out hiking with a heavy backpack on.
You don't get endurance fit at the local gym.
B: His head is just not in the right frame of mind for the Dakar, he secretly doesn't think he can do it. It's obvious every time he mentions it.
That's why he's having so much trouble doing the enduros...If I can't do this how am I going to do the Dakar?
He should have had the courage to stand up and admit the Dakar was going to be too tough for him. That would have been much more impressive of him.
I am sure Simon knows Charley is not going to finish before he starts also.

Why do people get upset when I and other blokes point out Charley's lack of abilities?...he decided to show the DVD in the public arena...therefore he (and everyone else) should have expected negative feedback.

Agree on that I was telling my self while reading the book that his state of mind wasn't what one would have expected to complete the race... but seems  to have been better just before he crashed out of the race (after he eventually figured out the map book holder) anyway any one who competes in that rally have my respects it must be something out of this world!

Reading the book is quite inspiring!

Couple of pics nicked from his website.

A friend of mine who did the Dakar this year, and will compete again next year.
Christophe Barriere-Varju.
Born in Africa, now lives in Oz.
