Title: Relaxing Ride to Rooi Els PLUS
Post by: droffarc on February 19, 2006, 07:58:20 pm
I got off to an unusual start for this ride.  When I awoke I noticed that the power was still off. At about 4:30 am the lights went off and were still off. While I was still dressing it began to rain and I got an SMS from Macduff to say that they would be a little late ? also had no power.

The bike was in the garage which has an electric opener but the power was off so there was no pow! I tried to disengage the opening device but still could not open the door so I eventually got hold of my headlamp and a pair of pliers and removed the split pin that holds the actuating arm of the door device and was able to open the door, take the bike out and re-assemble the door opener.

Meanwhile it was raining so I put on my winter jacket and rain brookies and off I went.

Just the other side of Somerset west Lito becrept me from be-after and gestured to me that I was late.
On arrival Macduff, Mango, Lito and Masehare was there with another chap who rides a Varadero, Dave, I think he said.

Was not long and Masehare, who was inappropriately attired left and we went on to Rooi Els, each in his own time. Knowing that Lito wanted to do some peg scraping an Mango wanted to take it slow with the running in of the new KLR.

(Mango tries the Black Beast for size)

After coffee, tea, coke and much chatter I left to do my ride. I went through Kleinmond to Botriver and out on the van der stel pass. At the right turn for Caledon I proceeded and soon passed a dead porcupine.
This road joins the tarred road Villeirsdorp to Caledon and is called the Hawston view road. Towards Villiersdorp on the right I investigated a short gravel road to the quarry.

Before the Theewaterskloof dam I turned off on the gravel road to Vyeboom and then the right turn to the van der stel pass again after seeing a large flock of blue cranes.

At Vyeboom I continued to Grabouw where it looked as if it would rain but not a drop. In Grabouw I met up with a chap on an Africa Twin. He had a feather jauntily stuck into the strap of his goggles. We rode together down Sir Lowry?s pass and through the traffic at Somerset west.
Pics to follow...

Thanks droffarc....nice pics

Yes, I still do like the Katoom, it's feels suprisingly light just by sitting on it, and not too high....he's a beaut  :)

droffark, after you left, we remained seated  :D and when we did finally decide to get off our butts, we went along to Hangklip, but first turned off on a narrow tarred road, which turned into loose gravel....again, at one point, I almost lost it, but this time, remembered to gas it, and it worked....Bloody LITO and his powerslides or whatever you call them, kept on shooting dust onto my bike.  :angryfire:  :D ..eventually we got back onto the road to hangklip, where we again, found ourselves on gravel, and again I found myself on some soft sand....After this little trip, I really have to get decent gear, coz I am going to fall. On the way back, I practically rode into an overhanging bush, which knocked my leg off the peg, and somehow I remained on the bike   I think after that little trip, I need to fall, and get it over with, then perhaps this offroad riding won't make me so nervous.

All in all, a really nice lazy sort of riding day  :D .....but.....my bike is dirty.......and I ain't going to clean it today....LITO has some pics, but the bike looks dirtier in real life.  :D

The fall should have been with the OLD BIKE Mango, maybe borrow Mac's for the fall

As I have said before - DS riders seem to fall down a lot! :o

droffarc dude, I suggest you invest in some crash bars for your TA, all this talk about DS riders crashing is bad karma.
Either the kind wino has or the ones on Zonkelnuts little baby.

If you have not crashed you dont know where the limits are.

As long as you enjoyed it Mac then it is good. If you dont enjoy it - dont do it.

The van der stel pass road surface seems much more corrugated now than it was last, but it was fun. While I was stopping for pics a guy approached from ahead - at first I thought it was Scribble but the bike was too clean. The guy looked as though he had been standing all the way there and stopped to ask if I was OK.
That's what I like about DS riders - always ready to help each other.

BTW I was thinking - the place we had coffee - you seem to know the guy well - would he perhaps be inyterested in sponsoring TB in some way - like giving a free lunch in a buy four get one free setup for bikers?

Just a thought

Oh I know where the limits are Mr Shark_ZA. Ground floor is the limit  :D
Last time I had to replace a fairing the price was R877.32. My arithmatic is a little arthritic but it would appear that I would have to fall more than four times to make up for the price of bars.

Now I have no intention of testing the force that often

Nice report dude, I like the way you take pics of the turns and road surfaces.
Proper multi surface motorcycling, I will take note and try some in the future.

droffarc did his route as planned, but agreed to meet mango and myself who only planned the rooiels part.... (LS was going to do this with him)

lito who hadnt confirmed any particular run, hung out in rooiels.
a third variation didnt take place as there were a few no-shows (friends of masehare) who were thinking of hermanus as the destination.

Man, Droffarc, did I mention that I like you more each day?

hahhhaha

I am STILL waiting on RedMenance to answer my question LS, when he does, its yours, its waiting for ya

Kak one on the petrol, my super fuel saving KTm was also low on gas, I managed to ride at a 100 (man! that was hard   ) on the highway and then a truck came past me (huge) at 120, so I slipstreamed him till there was around 1km to go to Engen on N2, and I gassed it hard to 170 and if I ran out, then I would just coast in. Turns out I had 0.5 literes in left tank, 0,5 litres in right tank.

I then gassed her up to top and put her into 5th and on the highway in the slight traffic took her up to 210 before having to JAM on anchors. IT was very close, not the smartest. Whats cool though is that she was around 1000 revs from redline in 5th, and I reckon 6th then could take her to 220 without too much hassle. Just needed more road. I am amazed that my 4 dented front rim which almost tankslaps at 75km/h, is so true at that speed. Oh well.

Heres the photos sent to me from Mango/Ernie. Thanks guys, and gal, it was a super lazy day which was fun. Nice to meet Dave (nice guy!) and see Droffie had a chop in the hair department. Myself Mac and Mango just sat shooting the shit for hoursssss  - what an awesome place to do so, and it was very fun. Did we mention the 15 superbike riders that we toasted? The back half were realllllly SLOW. The front half werent great either and by the time we got to Rooiels almost I was on number 2. Lekker. They were kitted in full leathers and race boots and gloves.

Mango, its called Roost dear, and when the thing peels out (wheelspins to the side) the stones or whatever shooting out is roost. Sorry I did that to you    it wasnt my intention. I did offer you more than twice to take my bike for a spin tho  :D

Droff, nice pics mate, wow, what beautiful Cranes they were! I would have sat mesmerised for a long time.... beautifull......

I like the UK, my job is great, but the riding here sucks, as does all the litigaton, and other related crap........

More boet..... ja die bike rentals is nie duur in ?£?£?£?£'e nie, maar dan is daar nie geld vir kos nie.......

Bottom line is that I have done some of the hairiest rides with my 1150 GS in South Africa, which I won't do here soon.

Anyway, it will be a good motivation for when I do come back....

Been here 3 1/2 years, may as well get the passport, I have the house and home loan already.....
