Title: WD Annual bash 2009
Post by: Milkybar on November 16, 2009, 12:13:34 pm
Wow..what a bash!
Thanks to everyone involved in the organising of the annual bash this year. Amazing spot, nice weather, enough trees, not too cold....lekker food, although there was some unhappy faces and sounds going around on Saturday but .....whats done, is done!
Some of the GP WD's came down to Hoopstad on Thursday afternoon to sleep over in our garden. There was some concern about the neighbours complaining etc. but they behaved!  :thumleft: We didn't have to chase them into a cage and keep them locked up until Friday morning. :angel10:
We all had a proper meal at the Stables restaurant in the main road ( they are famous for hamburgers the size and height of a big dinner plate.) All was in great spirits in anticipation for the ride on Friday. :ricky:
Went to bed early enough....got up at 5h30 and all started packing up. Left our house at 8h00 to fill up petrol. This morning I get calls from all over town of people trying to find out what went on in town ???..........just a Wilddog invasion! Don't worry!!  :thumleft:
Haba, Oetie, Major Tom, Cave Girl, Tweetie, Tonteldoos, Tank Girl, DarthVtwin, Miles, Wild Hearted Son, GSDawid - all left my house and rode past the school to fill up  - the kids were amazed at this sight!
I could not take a lot of pics due to being right at the back - carrying everyone's kit so they can enjoy the trip! So come on guys...fill us in please! Post those pics!! :useless:

Hertzogville and then the gravelroad to Boshoff....... Not too bad....some guys enjoyed it and others lost some luggage  :peepwall: along the way due to the vibrations!!
Had a wonderfull cashbar waiting at the hotel with Willem, Hans, Reinier, biela, HentieBM, DeonDJ and Wooly Bugger waiting with something cold in hand.
After some bikes with the miniture tanks filled up, the group split with some taking gravel towards Douglas and other hitting the tar towards Kimberley.
About 10 km's outside boshoff I see these 2 bikers standing next to the road. I slowed down, wanting to stop and enquire about the problem ..just to get a quick  :thumleft: and I can go on riding.......
Maybe 20km before Kimberley my phone rings......" Melktjoklits, kom help asb! ek het 'n papwiel."  :dontknow: Had to chase in the front bikers to let them know I have to turn around.
Made my U-turn and went back - 35km before I see the same 2 bikers next to the road - a certain 800GS already ynloaded. Turned in, took everything of the back of the bakkie...... Between Wooly Bugger, DeonDJ and me, we had to pick that lewensgevaarlike beast up onto the back and repack everything again. BMW - on - call did not respond quick enough. Took the beast to BMW to have a tube replaced due to a screw.... :-\
Left Kimberley at 13h30 to the bash.......an hour later I meet up with some Wd's taking a break under a nice shady tree just outside Smidtsdrif.
Left them after greeting just to get another call from a lewensgevaarlike owner" Ek dink nie ek het genoeg petrol  om Griquastad te maak nie. Gaan so bietjie wag tot die  garage oopmaak en dis eers 2h30" Siesta time in the Karoo!  :sleepy1: Getting there I pass the graveltravelers and some stop at the same place in Cambell.....and guess what....No petrol...Oops, now what??? :'( Put the "lewensgevaarlik" back on the bakkie????  >:D No.....CG had a jerrycan filled with petrol on the bakkie, so we borrowed some and head on to Griquastad.
Filled up the insides of the bikes as well as bodies at the only petrolstation in town and then took the last 100km's to the bash.

"...... had to take the gravelroad slower than the bikes...every bump taken, something might jump off the bakkie.....
Got to the site and unpacked. Started the coffee and the friends came streaming in"
I told you I don't have pics.........back-up bakkie......no camera......Woolly Bugger will be home later so he can post pics of a "lewensgevaarlik" on a "Indian Cruiser" etc. DeonDJ and some others took pics, but Monday mornings blues caught up with them? They might post later............ :3some:
Haba and me enjoyed every single one of you that came for coffee, a chat or just a joke!!
Had a great braai on Friday evening with lekker salads. The party at the bar went on until the farmer lady closed the bar at 2am. Shame - she got such a fright with all these Wilddogs walking around loose, she even slept on the floor outside the patiodoor just to make sure nobody swipes the drinks.  :o Sies honne!!
Saturday a guy packed up his KTM bling and headed out before most dogs woke up. What did you WC WD's do to the poor Katoomer? Was he a WD?
I spent most of the day at camp just relaxing in the cold shade because that sun was too dangerous. The WD's at camp wasn't fierce enough to keep the monkies away from the food and drinks at the tents. You turn your back to the tent and they swipe the bread and rusks......are you all bark and no bite WD's??  >:D

Ganjora, Groenie  - did you leave the blue lilo on the banks of the Orange river for a likkewaan to take for a swim? Very brave guys.....took to the river while we just stood and watched them.....that water looked inviting but the wind was so cold! Later the afternoon  I thought I saw a plane, no...was it a bird....NO...what was it? Was it a monkey? NO!!! :mwink:

No 3 Wd's climbing the koppie to sit at the top and check us all out? Wonder what they did up there, because they disappeared after a while......  ???

Yep still got Monday Blues, will submit pics after 4, yes again thanks to Caroline and Wooly Bugger for assisting with the yellow rockets (lewensgevaarlik) puncture, was feeling very lonely next to the road, we huffed and puffed to get it up but on it went. After a nice bill  :'( for the repairs I was back on the road again, while on afterburner a white cobwebbed KTM 990 fully laden appeared over the horizon >:D, going back to where I came from but doing only 90 k's an hour, saw the rider gesturing something but I was on Mach2 and thought hey the bash is thatta way boet :imaposer:!
I enjoyed myself so immensly that I ran out of fuel at Campbell, also only to hear the plaaswinkel opens at 14h30 and that there was no fuel, sheeeet what now, eeee Caroline where are you, have you got fuel, yes, well get over here!

...we were lucky enough to find the site first of, unlike some GPS's that took the scenic route towards the Bash spot.

Waited a while for the Magh-in-drha to make it's appearance but was all understanding to why it pitched up all so "early".

And to find out Ice cold beer was being served........

had a good bash.
went down with Zonk, Groenie, KiLRoy, Brink and 'the dominee'.   Took it nice and beery on the 2 day journey.   riding a bike is hot thirsty business...
stopped to do a doo in khatu.   nothing to do in khatu,  but a doo...   met a very lekker dude,  who came through to the bash on the saturday - me zonk and groenie arrived just past sunset on friday.
brilliant to put names to faces,  and meet those i've only read about.
saturday started with beer very early.
sometime later me Groenie and DB9 climbed the koppie behind camp to have a DB9 geological Q&A session.
then i wandered down and swam across the damn,  and met some strange fishermen on the other side.   had 4 double brannes an cokes,  then got a lift back across.   just as well,  the swim tired me out quite a bit - actually some current going on in the middle - had to swim at 45' to make it straight across.
went mad back at camp on my arrival - it was the strange fishermen's brandy.....
woke up fealing like undiluted hell,  and managed (hallelujah!!!) to organise a lift back with shark.   was only able to digest milk and coke till very recently.   thanks for the lift shark_za,  the ride would have killed me...
a briilliant bash,  and very glad to have met lots of dogs.
thanks to all for organising.
thanks to all that tolerated (in good humour) the lunatic behaviour.

Aaiirree Rasta!!!

What an absolute JOL!

Myself and AdventureMX took the softie's option and loaded our bikes on the bakkie and did the tar to Kimberly in comfort  8)
We left Randburg at around 4am and arrived in Kimberly at 10:30am We unloaded the bikes fueled up and took some interesting dirt roads to the bash.

Ready to go

The Bakkie was left at the Ultra City with the promise of financial reward should it be there when we get back!

After lunch we took a slight detour to go at see the convergence point of the Orange and Vaal rivers
(http://home.telkomsa.net/edgepc/klr/boegoe8.jpg)

And as luck would have it AdvMX had a puncture about 35km's out of Douglas
a quick repair turned into a struggle as the spanner we had was stripping the wheel nut  :-\
After a failed attempt at fixing the tube on the bike I set of in search of a farm house and a 21mm Socket.
All I found was F-ALL BUT there was loads of it!  ;)

After 30mins of nothing I returned to find AdvMX in the company of a very nice couple from a nearby farm, With their help he made short work of the repair and we were back on the road, As we were running out of time we skipped the rest of the dirt and made haste via tar for the camp site!

We arrived at Boegoeberg at around 6:30pm to a cold beer and lots of cheer!

I took my trusty hammock along and managed to combine my tent and hammock into a Super TentMock or Hamment

I got some very funny looks and a lot of "You never going to be comfortable it that" type comments but I was amazed at how well I slept, First camping trip for me with no stiff back the next morning!

After a lot more sports and drinks we went to bed only for some savages to start a bike revving competition!

Was classic to hear a bike on the limiter followed by someone shouting "RALLLLLIEEEE!"

Kilroy came stomping over and put a stop to the lunacy.

The next morning we were all up early and got packed up and all made our ways home!

We did dirt all the way to Kimberly where we loaded up the bakkie and drove home!
With stops etc were were home at 8pm

Some pictures of the ride home!

Crap!

As we start to panic a friendly policeman stops by and tels us the Tannie that runs the KoOp is in the church and we set of to fetch her, She arranges for the policeman to fetch one of the workers that operates the pumps from his home and they unlock the KoOp and sell us fuel, Amazing people in these small towns

Did talk to Wooly Bugger now, he is cooped up in an B&B near Sterkfontein dam/Little Switserland, his bike did give him some trouble and the weather is very bad, gale force winds and mist, his bike was blown over a few times he said due to the wind when he stopped to stretch is legs a bit, he decided to rather wait the storm out in the B&B, and as luck would have it a bus load of Spanish chicks stopped there to stay over in the same B&B, Woolly friend enjoy the redwine and ride safely tomorow :thumleft:

CHorse and I both arrived safe at home, after a two-day return ride which was predominantly tar. Slept at a neat little place last night, on the banks of the Vaal river at Bloemhof; a place by the name of "Plekkie in die Son"  (S27 39.525 E25 36.317) at a price of only R70 p/p. neat, clean ablution blocks, and they also have log cabins available at about R85 p/p.

This morning while standing outside the local shop in Leeudoringstad, we were "accosted" by a very friendly gent called Koos Rossouw, who showed interest in our bikes, and started chatting about where we'd been, and where we here headed. He invited us to come and view his private museum of vintage bike,s and cars, and other assorted bric-a-brac that he and his wife have been collecting over the past decades. Very interesting! He also extended an invite to any and all Dogs who may be interested in visiting, to contact him. Myself and CHorse have the details.

Thanlks to all the Dogs who made this weekend possible.

;D ;D ;D Whats all this about savages and bikes on the limit?

I thought it was a bash, not a boy scout camp.  >:D

Anyway, I was most upset with that car reving on the the limit after all the dawgs were asleep. Disgusting! ;D

Seriously it was a great time, thanks everyone who participated, it was an pleasure to meet you all! My Pics & Report coming soon.

Anyway, I was most upset with that car reving on the the limit after all the dawgs were asleep.

BTW that guy was not a WD... He was some local twatwaffle who came looking for his chick... Said he had lost her there somewhere... Now this oke's eyes were seriously glazed over and he wasnt making much sense.  ???
Kamanya and I went over to chat and try get rid of the ou. I was very lus to PK the oke, but he looked rather unstable.   :-\
And with that being the Wild West I didnt want to risk the oke pulling out a rollie or something. So I went out of character and tried to be diplomatic and helpful...
Anyways, after a couple of laps through the camp, (and rev limiting his diesel Isuzu shitbox), we paid him another visit and made it clear that he would be better off if he left. Which he did.

What a tietkop...  ::)

Thanks to all for a fantastic bash...

firstly all the ouens who make this site possible with financial/technical expertise and the okes who spend the time modding. As a group WD is a fantastic and unique experience.

Then to the 110 other okes and lasses that were there making it oh so sweet.

To the okes i rode with there and the okes i rode back with  :thumleft:

Finally to Mr Yamaha for making a very lekker lil bike that carried me there an back.

There WAS a fairly sexy female that came in from town and who disappeared with one of the dawgs :mwink:

Wonder if it was her that was the "lost" girlfriend >:D

Thank you to all who contributed with photies - I somehow neglected to take some :peepwall:

I packed the previous night, miraculously fitting a whole bunch of crap I never used. My wife was commissioned to finding me a tent the previous day, as well as some Tire levers (I think they are for a truck) but they fitted nicely into my tent bag.

I met IceCreamMan, Il Duce, Stu (don’t know your forum name) and Bluebull2007 at the engen 1stop near Grasmere. Had some coffee and then headed towards Parys, we skieted the tollgate (the only one for the whole trip) and the trip started.

Hit tar till warrenton, this is a stop just after Christiana, Il Duce doing a little jig for us.

My trip mates, there was a swarm of gnats, that seemed to try and take us back to their lair to do manual labor, building miniature landing strips for them…they seemed to be everywhere, couldn’t wait to get going again.

First half of the trip was lots of this:
Almost fell asleep on my bike a couple of times…

Oh look this is something new…oh no wait.. more tar…
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe006.jpg)

Stopped for a wee bit, and then back on the bikes
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe007.jpg)

Then it was brunch time
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe008.jpg)

We saw some locals, uhhh looking like (cliché warning) they just stepped out of the deliverance movie….
And the Barman giving us a brief ride report of when he went somewhere far on his little 250.

Food was ok, Cold beer was awesome.

On we went to DIRT…yeeeehaaaw

Stu on his 1200, he missed his Dakar for the Dirt bits…
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe009.jpg)

More dirt fun:

Il Duce leading the group

This is what Il Duce looked like Sunday morning through IceCreamMan’s eyes…

Howzit Stu!!!

Fauna and Flaura (I’m sure the Fauna is in there somewhere)

Lovely Dirt Road, for km’s and km’s
Some sections of the limestone gravel are super white, without sunglasses the glare is quite something, a lot like snow is I imagine.

One of my fav pics.

Little hills in the background. Bluebull explained some of the geography of the area, very interesting.

We got to a T-Junction, faced with the choice of more dirt to Griekwastad, or a little dirt stretch and then tar, Bluebull and myself opted for the +/- 130km dirt stretch, and we were not disappointed. Unlike the long straight stretches, there were some corners… ups and downs and awesome scenery…no pics…couldn’t break the rhythm.
I must mention my tires at this stage; I have Maxxis traxer on the back, a true DS tire. (The tar destroyed most of the tread, making it a Dirt Slick) The tires did not fare too badly; I think the extra weight on the back helped…although cornering was really exciting…

We got to some crossroads, stopped to consult the map that got blown out of my pocket along the way…
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe023.jpg)

Another fav Pic.

A farmer passed us while we were having some water. I am convinced he though we just landed from mars…

Turning left, our headwind now became a crosswind... made it really interesting.
Dumdum buck crossed my path out of nowhere, and I was really lucky..couldnt even brake…I smelt it crapping as it passed.. or was that me?

From whence we came: (

Then we came to the bustling metropolis of Griekwasstad.

Tied our horses down and went into the saloon to find some loose women and a cold beer…
(http://usera.ImageCave.com/stofdonkie/Bash09/boegoe026.jpg)
Found these guys there. They were impressed with the time we made on dirt.

On to the bash, from Griekwasstad we klapped tar to groblershoop, missed the bash turnoff, as the GPS was pointing us to the other side of the river. We got the correct directions from the lady at the petrol station and off we went.

Hit the dirt:

The road was lotsa fun, but had plenty of places a weary adventure rider could be caught out.

Nice bike!

Awesome roads…

The bash was great. Met some nice people, was able to put faces with forum names and avatar’s
Kuiered a shitload. I got caught up with Plothond and Funacide after coffee. Then kuiered a bit here, a bit there etc.

Left Sunday morning not too early, took tar ALL the way to Vryburg.

The road to tar from the bash venue.

This was great…temperature just perfect, not hot, perfect with a pleasant breeze keeping the temperature down.

This is a bridge just outside warrenton, we skipped the pub this time.

On the way to vryburg the road had these beautiful lanes of trees.

We considered camping in Vryburg for a nanosecond, but first found out what a night in the hotel would set us back…imagine our surprise when it cost just R150 pp. we promptly paid and settled down in our rooms, went for a swim (the water was FAAAARKING cold, but very refreshing)

Had some beers, walked 2km through the town to look for a decent restaurant, but the hotel restaurant was the only thin that was open on a Sunday eve. Had lekker chow and beer and crashed early.

I left at 4:45 the next morning as I had to be home early to take the kiddy to the doc.
I got the pinehaven traffic light, and people were finding I quite strange to see dirty fully loaded bike filtering. It was claustrophobic.

Arrived home at 8:30

Average consumption on the bike was 4.5l/100km
Did just over 1800km roundtrip

Thanx to the organizers of the bash, I think the company, facilities and surroundings far outweighed the mishaps with the food.

My name is Grootseun again... and I looooove my bike!!!!

Strange Archealogical discoveries were recently made on the banks of the Boegoeberg dam. Experts in the field have tried in vain to determine what the Religion and Politics of these earlier primitive peoples were.

After some time it was determined it could possibly have been a bunch of Tietkoppe:

These nomadic tribes dispersed, some of them crossing Verneukpan.
Seeing Wilddogs on the pan is a sight to behold:

The technology they brought with them had never been seen before:

Ok, so instead  of opening my own Ride report, and cluttering the forum with a horde of bash reports, im just going to give my input here.

First of all thanx to all the organisers of the bash for a absolute great weekend! It was a jol!

Here goes!

"our planned route"
although we might have changed it a bit from time to time.

We (Dr Dirt, Nurse Dirt and me)started of in George on Thursday morning  6h !   way too early for me!

"Me and the Twin"

Note how shiny the bikes still was at this stage! This was soon to change.

First we headed to oudshoorn via the path less traveled, less traveled by ds bikers that is as we took the tarred Outiniqua pass and kept to the tar until we got to the Swartberg pass.

Here are some pics of the swartberg pass
(http://i724.photobucket.com/albums/ww242/gryph2009/31.jpg)

Last time I came here I didnt make it down succesfully! But this time there was no worries!

We continued on to Prince Albert where we had a very good breakfast before heading on again.
From here onwards it was gravel traveling. Heading towards Fraserburg

about 50km from Fraserburg I realized I had a small problem. My pannier bracket's one quicklock came loose. We were unable to get the quicklock  fastened again without unpacking everything from the back so we just strapped it with cable ties and on we went again.

On the road again on our way to Carnavon
with another quick stop and rest somewhere in between.

"Friendly locals chatting with us while were taking a break.

Ariving at Carnavon we saw we werent the only dogs there

As we were spending the night here the friendly people of the Carnavon Hotel didnt want us to leave the bikes in the road so they opened the one hall for us.

What happens when you put a lot of wild dogs together in the blikkies bar? A very late night for the barladies.

On Friday morning, feeling....  well not feeling to bad at all considdering the previous night,  we headed of to the bash through Van Wyks vlei and Marydale (or is it Marrydale?  Eva? Scrat?)

But before we got to Marydale Loki with his transalp ran out of petrol! Apparantly he had some trouble before we met at fraserburg and after that the old lady was more thirsty than his jeep!

Lucky for us though just as we stopped and just before we started to syphon some juice out of my Twin,  Kamanya (Andrew) came round the corner with his katoom (fitted with long range fuel tanks)
Andrew quickly helped us with a few litres of petrol and soon we were on our way again.
Thanx a million Andew!
(sorry I have no photos of this. Maybe some of the other guys can help?)

However!  We all misjudged the distance to go to Marydale and litterally about 1km before town Loki ran out of petrol again! Almost close enough to push the TA to the station but Scrat said he would go get some petrol for him.

"Loki finally at a pump"

Marydale was the last town we passed before we reached the camp.

The bash itself was a great time!

"Loki on a trials bike"

yup I know....   no ATGATT?!?!

But all good things comes to a end and Sunday we had to head back home.

We changed our route to  go through Groblershoop because Loki needed fuel again and would not make the way back to Marydale.

After Groblershoop we went to Kenhardt to get some breakfast, passing through Putsonderwater.

"die put.   Sonder water"

Had a breakfast at Kenhardt and wanted to head of to Verneukpan. However Dr Dirt had a flat on his 990.

Not to worry though, we were in town close to the garage and we sorted the problem out real quick.

In the meantime I also had some trouble with my Twin that we had to sort out before we could continue our travels.

The frame holding the head unit of the twin broke comletely, however it was nothing that could not be fixed with a few cable ties (thanx Loki) some duct tape (thanx Snafu) and a cargo net (thanx Scrat)

Soon we were on our way again to verneukpan

"Me and Dr Dirt @ verneukpan"

From there  we changed route again and headed for brandvlei as Loki's TA would not make it directly to Williston.

We would be sleeping in Williston however we did not get there before MORE trouble.

About 60km before Williston Loki had some electrical issues with his bike.
Once again nothing that could not be sorted out but this took quite a while and it was getting dark fast.
We did the last 20km in the dark wich was a bit of an adventure for me seeing as my head unit was loose and the headlights not shining properly on the road as they should.
After narrowly dodging 3 "springbokkies" and 2 "springhase" we finally made it to Williston where everyone of us basicly passed out right after dinner.

The next morning we split up again.  Scrat& Eva , Loki and ms heading for Cape Town and  Me, Dr Dirt and nurse heading for George.

"meiringspoort"

we opted for meiringspoort this time instead of  the swartbergpass. And when we got closer to George we took the montagu pass instead of Outiniqua this time.

We arrived at home monday night aroun 18:30.

What a great weekend!  Im allready looking forward to the next bash!

These nomadic tribes dispersed, some of them crossing Verneukpan.
Seeing Wilddogs on the pan is a sight to behold:

Brilliant shot, Sprocketbek! You MUST enter it into the photee competition.

Grootseun, thanks for posting, some nice photees. Great riding with you too.

I left Pretoria at 04h20 to get to the Grasmere one stop at 05h10. It promised to be a good day.

Here are the dogs who rode together in this group:

Me

And finally our fearless leader Il Duce, who has the fastest KLaR Ive ever seen.

It was about 10 to beer when the boys broke the seal. Once the seal has been broken its all downhill from there. This was not good news. Would we make it to the bash?

Soon enough we were crossing the Vaal into Christiana.

When we got to Warrenton, we stopped for a beer and checked out some skeef locals   :rabbit:, including a girl who had been sent to "talk to the bikers". But we had no time for girls, we needed to get to the bash.  :evil6: So off we went. Soon enough we on this cool dirt highway.

We had a close shave with the cages on the road a couple of times, these locals have no idea how to slow down when bikers are on the road. Il Duce almost got taken out when a bakkie tried to pass him on the inside while we were all pulling away from a rest stop.

But he remained calm in good spirits and let our team from watering hole to watering hole through the day.

P.S. I'm feeling a lot better on the 1200 now on the dirt, even loaded or with the pillion... ha ha! The boxer is the best thing ever! Still miss the Dakie a lil, though and always will! The boxer was even using less fuel thant the KLR & XT on the way back.

H

Canon EOS something or the other.

But the equipment is only half of the result.

Knowing how to get the most out of it and having a talent for taking a good photo and understanding how to get the photo to look like you picture it in your mind is what its about.

And clearly Sprocketbek has that under control.

Very cool photos!

Here are some of my pics:

We rode from the Cape straight up the N7 to Garies. From there we headed over to Hondeklipbaai. It rained all the way from my front door to our destination. It sucked.

Dirt road between Garies and Hondeklipbaai
(http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/8269/sany0013n.jpg)

At first the clay road was just mildly entertaining
(http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/5369/sany0017c.jpg)

Then it became quite humorous
(http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8455/sany0018kk.jpg)

...until we eventually stopped laughing
(http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2803/sany0020bu.jpg)

We eventually made it to Noup. A small bay inside DeBeer's mining concession. Noup has a couple of huts that were originally used to house diamond divers. They now cater for visitors and are quite popular in high season.

Thanks for the compliments guys, appreciated.
I used a Canon 350XT with only one lens: The 450D's 18-55 IS kit lens.
Toyed with the idea of taking another lens or 2 but decided against it.

Butch's bike wouldn't start. It had been giving problems since before we left. By now the batteries including his spare was almost cooked.
My little X tried to breath one last bit of life into the big KTM, to no avail
(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2674/sany0092v.jpg)

Eventually he found a loose fuse which allowed one last jump-start so he could follow us across the border.

At the Nam border post we had to split up. His bike was just too unreliable to follow us up-country. He was forced to stay on the busy route and limp home. Goodbye buddy.

His bike never made it home...

Along the Orange River we happened upon a overlanding German. What is it with Germans and Bikes?

Nope, He was on a MZ with a KTM640 tank and seat. He's had it for 15years I think he said. And his rebuilt it only once or twice I can't remember. It's been absolutely everywhere.

You could tell ze German owner was a seasoned traveller and proud of his East German machine

The next day we went south to the border. We were longing for faster roads and frankly, South Western Nam just wasn't that interesting...

Nest of social weavers

Orange River valley
(http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9995/sany0205j.jpg)

Crossing the border at Onseepkans

The road to Pofadder
(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/562/sany0219.jpg)

Sot's rear brake seized up
(http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3869/sany0222b.jpg)

After correcting the seizure we went on to Augrabies for the night. We wanted to spoil ourselves a bit

And of course the next day we arrived at the Bash.

I don't have many pics of the Bash itself. I was too busy having a good time to worry about a camera.
Others have better pics than I anyway

On the way back. TopDeck road between Koegas and Draghoender
(http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/8682/sany0269.jpg)

I wanted to get home and pushed through to CapeTown in one go

Here I am looking over the Boland. Another 40km to my front porch
(http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/9197/sany0271c.jpg)

And that's it. That's my version of the trip to the Bash and back.

I loved this year's Boegoeberg Bash. Best one Yet! Thanks all. Special thanks to JourneyMan who organised all the logistics even though he couldn't be there himself to whip the caterers in shape ;D

From your 1st photo Butch does not look amused.

I would not have been either.

Something like this is a double whammy: 1 - your bike isn't lekker and will probably cost money to fix and 2 - You are missing out on an awesome trip with good friends.

Not fair.

Wild Dogs bash was amazing, some of the best fun I have ever had! Can't wait for the next one!!!

P.S. I'm feeling a lot better on the 1200 now on the dirt, even loaded or with the pillion... ha ha! The boxer is the best thing ever! Still miss the Dakie a lil, though and always will! The boxer was even using less fuel thant the KLR & XT on the way back.

Good to hear youre more comfortable with the bike, still I reckon you should consider get knobblies, even if Grootseun like his slicks so much ;D

To the rest of the people I met at the bash, it was a pleasure to meet everyone. A very lekker jol and the Transboegoe Resort is really an excellent place. Please also allow me this opportunity to thank my riding mates LS, Wino and Butch for a wonderful trip, JourneyMan for organising a brilliant bash and lastly but perhaps most sincerely, my thanks to Wino who very responsibly led a nightblind geriatric in the dark down Hex River, and all the way to the northern suburbs at the end of it all when we decided that Laingsburg was way too depressing to spend a Sunday night. Could not have managed it otherwise
