Title: Tankgirl UP!!!
Post by: Kaptein Bos on February 09, 2010, 01:44:25 pm
Just got word Tankgirl went down some time this morning on the N1 (I assume Pretoria area).  In theatre at the moment in Kloof hospital.  Was apparently on the radio.  Don't have much more detail.  Did hear the bike is a write-off and she is hurt but not too seriously at this stage... :(

Damn - I actually saw the aftermath
Went past just after the Metro got there - about 07:05

I actually thought it might be her when I saw the bike. The rider (obviously Tankgirl) was all trussed up on a stretcher and looked like a male (no offence intended) and thus I thought it wasn't her.

The highway narrows at exactly that point due to construction work and I see it every morning - cages race up and squeeze into the gap there

Get well - our best wishes for a speedy recovery  :thumleft:

TG was otherwise occupied, but I did manage to speak to, who I assume, was her mom.

She hasn't broken any bones, but has quite a nasty graze on her ankle, on which they operated yesterday, and then she's going in again tomorrow for a skin graft.

She's in bed # 10, Surgical ward, Kloof medi-clinic.

Post by: tankgirl on February 18, 2010, 06:46:22 pm
hey again :) thanks for the continuing messages of encouragement guys they mean a lot!

actually went back in on saturday as the doc had an opening that day and i was finally discharged again this afternoon after a long and shitty stay in the high care unit, the tap flap story they tried on saturday unfortunately failed and was reviewed and removed a day later. after they cleaned the wound they attached a little suction machine to the hole where it will hopefully promote bloodflow and growth to the tissue area while it keeps the wound dry, before they attempt another skin graft. (much later i hope because i feel anaesthetics four times in six days is just not on, but that's me)

sitting with a couple nasty roasties that are itching like crazy but at least i'm out of the hospital and away from all its beeping beds, soakin' up the love at my parents' place and like cave girl said i believe that's where the healing will really happen :)

had a long and hard time to think about everything (sort of re-evaluating my priorities like) it's a difficult time because i'm not a drastic decision maker, but say now if i wanna have grandkids oneday it's safer that i quit biking, because i'm just not scared enough of it, or i'm too selfish to put my friends and family through all this, but it's like my favourite thing in the world? so how! i obviously need to sharpen up on the atgatt, but i would also like to know if there's a cure for a tankslappin'? how could i have saved it? or wait, i'll do a search :P hehe

anyway, i don't see myself quitting, can try to be more careful and hope that's enough, but ja in the meantime you all must enjoy on my behalf  ;D

I said I would stop riding if I ever came off that didn't happen .... so hopefull you just get back on and be carefull and never ride without your gear - fortunatly I never get on the bike without full gear, Had my new gear long before I was able to get back on the bike, but miss the stuff they cut off me ... am on a second set as the first ones I bought just didn't make me feel comfortable on the bike. When you find a way to sort out a tank slap let me know cause I just ride a lot slower now and as GG will tell you I was always slow before  :peepwall:
Hang in there and remember your family and friends love you the way you are and they will understand when you do get back on the bike!
By the way as I am trailering down on to the FS bash if you still keen to go you are most welcome to ride with me. Be good for you to be out in the fresh air  :)

TG, best of luck girl :thumleft:

No need to quit biking, accidents do happen.  Biking has the added fuckup that you normally experience pain with those accidents but it's amazing how much aware you become after an off.

Tankslappers - there's been a recent discussion (last week, can't remember what section) on tankslappers and what to doe, just hit the search button - Kamanya made a couple of very good points there.  Bottom line is that the tankslapper is initiated by the front wheel that get's disturbed, gets more amplified through the handlebars and eventually starts throwing throwing you into the slapping motion - especially when you start death gripping. Best is to just relax the arms and if you can, just take your hands of the handlebars - it will straighten out almost immediately.

Relax (no pun intended) and start slowly again - nothing like experience :mwink:

TG, voor jy so iets drasties doen soos om op te hou ry, kry eerder vir jou 'n steering damper soos die superbikes op het, miskien kan iemand so iets ontwerp wat jy kan afhaal as jy offroad gaan - dalk net 2 boutjies losmaak?

Ek mag dalk fatalisties klink, maar ek glo as jou tyd daar is, is hy daar. Joune was nog nie daar nie, jy is net 'n wake-up call gegee. Jy moet nog eendag jou kleinkinders leer bike ry!

Sterkte, hou jou oog op daardie wonde dat hulle gou en goed gesond word!.

TG,
Look at it is hard earned experience. What you need to do after an accident is get through the mental trauma and figure out how you are going to use what have happened to you. You can either use it as a mental bock or you can go forward and look at the positive side. (Looking at what you wrote you are already heading in that direction.) Learn out of the experience and use it to make you a better rider.

Think about how you fix your mental outlook for yourself so that the accident doesn’t bother you. If it means putting a steering damper on your bike so that you start to trust the bike and your own abilities then do it. Also think about doing some training courses, it is helps a lot to regain confidence in your abilities.

Good luck with the healing.

Tankgirl,

Glad you're out and getting better.....

had a long and hard time to think about everything (sort of re-evaluating my priorities like) it's a difficult time because i'm not a drastic decision maker, but say now if i wanna have grandkids oneday it's safer that i quit biking, because i'm just not scared enough of it, or i'm

Interesting question... well let me say this.... in the first week of Dec TravelGravel got knocked over by a bakkie with a trailer on the N1 (Brakfontein Interchange). A bit of damage to the bike but from an injury point of view bruising on the left upper arm , knees and and being stiff. Then 3 days later she walks out on the patio, slips and hit her head and suffered from concussion and whiplash. It's been 2 months and it not completely sorted yet...

What I am trying to say is that you don't need to be on a bike to get hurt. Accidents happen full stop bike or no bike.

Get well soon

Hi Tankgirl

Great to hear that you have escaped and are safe in your hideout. Hope the injuries heal quick.

When I broke my leg in December I went through quite a couple of emotions. At first I was angry, then worried and then kind of resolved. I also wondered about this biking hobby long and hard, but I just cannot see myself turning my back on biking. The thing is, there are lots of dangers in the world, and we must just try to live with them. (Like wearing ATGATT).
Anyways, just being part of the group of people called the Wild Dogs makes it worth the while, so I hope you're still going to join us riding!

i don't mind telling :) will add pics later (just washing off all the blood and snot quick :P)

i didn't wear my boots or any kind of knee protection. so the term atgatt does not apply.

had my airflow jacket on (arlen  ness mercer), helmet (airoh s4) and gloves (fox bomber ones)
the gear that i had on though, did a damn good job except that the jacket moved up to expose my boep and the gloves took somewhat of a beating, i'll replace them anyway. helmet has a scratch but nothing too serious. jacket's a little tatty but i will still keep it as a spare.

my jeans are ruined and so are my sneakers :-[

and i like my bike i don't wanna think about another bike now! :D
and this pedicure is the best eighty bucks i ever spent hehehe ;D
and i'm doing rides with each and every one of you as soon as this kak is all over ;)

wound's looking good, tendons all covered in beef again, still a few more mm's to go then i can start picking out some new skin  :P

Ouch!!! You look very sore!
I was looking at my boots and realized just how much damage my foot would have taken had I not had the boots on. You are very lucky the damage to you was not worse. Hang in there.

Girl you inspired me to go out and buy some comuta boots.  :mwink:

The last time the voice in my head promted me to get knee guards, I ignored it and a week later I was doing a splatter cat impression on the N1.
Knee guards and boots would have left me without a scratch.

You're tougher than I am, I'd be a real woes about that ankle ..... jeez

Godspeed with the healin..

Heard from the assessors yet??
