Title: Pics of your LOADED bike for the long trip.
Post by: Bessie on May 06, 2010, 10:03:17 am
Im not sure if a thread like this existed somewere and i am most probably the wrong person to start it.

here is my bike ready for a two night trip... but this is pretty much what it looked like on a 12 day Namibia trip too.

the only thing missing is a proper toolkit... but i have found a special place for that.. .but its a secret until i perfected it.

semi unloaded... you can see my backpack here.

OK, maybe a bit of an overload but the pooratech rain protection makes everything look a bit worse and more bulky. Will look for and upload something without the protection later.

And here I thought I looked like a travelling circus...

Included in the one pannier was my laptop as well. I washed jocks and socks every night, and tied them to the tog-bag on the pillion to blow dry while riding. I also had laundry done if I stayed over longer than 1 day in any place.

Clothing was 3 prs jocks and socks, 3 T-shirts, 2 prs jeans, jersey, slops and thermal balaclava. This, plus laptop was in left pannier

Right side was mattress pump, gas stove, gas lamp, army dixie to cook in, coffee mug, coffee/condensed milk/weet-bix, matches, soup, noodles, other small assorted snacks etc.

Topbox was mattress and rainsuit

Tankbag had water bottle, camera and assorted quick snacks (chocolate / biltong / dry wors).

Can't remember what was in the tog-bag, other than a centre stand that I made up just before leaving home. Had a need for the centre stand because i travelled solo, and didn't want to battle if I had a flat along the way. Fortunately I didn't need to use it, and donated it to Trailrider after I got back home. Which reminds me... I'd better make another one to take with me to the Limpopo Bash.

Not really adventure trips, but each time I alsa had a backpack with camera equip and laptop.

I used the Hyosung 250 to go to the Rally of SA in Ermelo last year. The Yamaha (FZ6R) went to races at Phakisa on Saturday and on Sunday I headed for Plokwane for a bus handover. THe Kawasaki Versys was used to cover the Total Econnmy Run at Badplaas and took me to Sabie, Nelspruit, Bethal etc.

Clarens, and 800kms in 6 hours with photo stops everywhere.

Don't laugh  :) Apart from looking the business and eating up the flats and twisties very quickly (and picking up girls), it's a useless long distance missile. That pillion seat was made for size 0 girls going to the cafe, not Oxford soft luggage. As for the bike, too much weight on the wrists, and one sniff of watered down petrol from a klein Free State dorpie and I was lucky to get it home >:(.

Here is McDonalds loaded up and ready to roll during Penny and my 3 week 5000km South Africa Holiday. The back back on my Tummy was there for bits that we might need during the ride like saamies, waterproofs, phones and wallets. All the rest was in the Ortlieb bag, including her big ass wooden high heels!
It involved lots of repacking every morning, rolling everything into tight little rolls but we always fitted it all in. We had the opportunity to do laundry 4 times on the trip and believe it or not never had to wear anything besides jeans and jearsys more than once.
IT was a helluva jol and Pen realised very quickly that you don't need lank Kak to be happy.

Golden Oldie! About 2002 from Cape Town to Durban. approx. 370 kg dead weight on a long road trip with a few steel parts in the ammo boxes....... Appropriately titled "Travel Light" I remember the front wheel came up real easy in 1st and 2nd. Once cruising speed was reached 120-140 solid as a tank. Total storage space approx. 270 litres

Those BMW Airheads get VERY jittery front wheels when you load them like that!
The need tank mounted saddle bags to spread the weight better.

EDIT:
My big boxer loaded for the recent  :ricky: trip around Lesotho:
(Credit Card Camping, so no tent or sleeping bags!)

I've since resolved to ditch the tank bag due to refueling hassles.
I'm looking to buy tank saddle bags.

My trippie sal erg kark wees as ek my bike so moet laai.
:mwink:
So lig as moontlik, min is meer vir my.

Post by: JacoM on April 23, 2012, 01:47:08 pm

The older i get the more I realize that less is more. Recent weekend trip up Sani.
The drybag contains:
2 person hiking tent
sleeping bag
blowup mattress
good selection of tools
spare tube
warm fleece jacket
1xbogroll
second pair of warm gloves
camping blanket
air pump
sandals
socks
kokoi

Small backpack hydration pack (6 litres) for the other odds and ends. This was for a weekend trip and my luggage capacity was used up about 2/3.
On a longer trip through, i don't see myself using much more than this. Maybe another pair of socks, a t-shirt and a change of underwear.

On the way to the MMC Karoo

Just had another look at this, what is all this stuff you have loaded? Looks like you are loaded for 3  - are you carrying for other people?

TM...

Nope - but I was prepared for the cold!

On top of my Pizzabox i had:

Stretcher (not an air mattress, but a proper army type stretcher)
Tent
4-legged foldable chair
Backpack with a polar fleece blanket inside (Double-bed size, so I can roll myself into a cocoon in it)

Inside the Pizzabox - canned food
Topbox - Clothes for 4 days, as I went to visit family after the MMC
Panniers - "casual" shoes, tools, gas stove, sleeping bag, extra ground sheet, etc.

the extra ground sheet came in handy, I used it to block the wind off my tent completely. It was about -2 degrees the first night, but I was warmer inside the tent than I would've been at home!

Tweespoor did you have any fuel shortages between towns on the KLE?
Did you take exstra fuel with you?

Post by: Shaun500 on May 26, 2012, 04:52:57 pm
Hi
No, luckaly no fuel issues. I did'nt carry any extra fuel though.   Had to plan the route carefuly to allow for fuel stops.  I think my riding companion took along a bit of extra fuel.  You will get about 220 km doing gravel touring (80 km/h) on the KLE and about 170 km if you give her a spanking.  Range is not a strong point on a KLE.  I've been lusting after a 660 Tenere for a while now.   :drif: :drif:  It has good range.  As mentioned, careful planning and you should be ok.   :thumleft:

Holy moly, the thought of dropping these bikes with all that on...or hitting something at speed.  :eek7:  :o

I'm with BlueBull on this one. Some people doesn't seem to realize the sh*t they drag along completely
ruin the bike's handeling and spoils the ride. Not to mention limiting your ability to ride technical terrain.
These two came through Africa like this!!! Documentary Film makers of sort so maybe they have a camera
and tripod to make up some of the luggage.  :imaposer:

Touratech must have sponsored them because besides the luggage that poor BMW was a rolling showroom
having every imaginable piece of Touratech contraption for a F800GS fitted.

He was very gentle. The part where we saw him, Solitaire in Nam, he was riding about 60km/h
on the wide open dirt highway. That F800GS probably never saw top gear.

Packed and loaded for Middlepos.
I must say that the BIG Bag panniers work very well. Packed everything into then including air matrass sleeping bag, pump for matrass, clothes shoes, first aid kit + 1 bottle Scotch (for emergencies) , rain suit , tools and other bits and pieces (Far more than I needed) Tent gets bungied on the back so no weight on the carrier frame. The Bag sits tight and dosnt move around at all......didnt even know it was there.

A pic from my 1999 Frankfort camping weekend on a pair of 125 two-strokes. It took us nearly 8 hours to get there from JHB as the air cooled bikes kept overheating.

The Kawasaki's subframe gave up half way there, so we had to load everything onto my Yamaha. We had everything with us except milk and meat.

December 2009, on my fantastic trip with my daughter, 63magic (also known as Margie). Taken before the first of three offs on that day. KLE was a pig to pick up, especially singlehanded, as there was no grip on the saddle. Also not really an offroad bike - more like offroad dressed in drag!
Gearing too high and torque peak for a road bike. Otherwise fantastic touring bike.

Ek is/was 'n stapper, so gewoond daaraan.

Vroeer hierdie jaar op my eie Kaap toe, 5 000 km.

Hi ALL!!

We went for a weekend non-electricity camping trip with the bike, so I was excited like a BOY to load my GS and play around with it. SO here's my first trip on my GS. Everything fitted well, and nothing came off, and it looked pretty cool as well! :mwink:

Okay met up with some guys with pillions this morning (They are on the forum but _ I do not remember their names) ???

They were on their way to the train station to load the bikes. Get on the train and start their journey from Worcester in the cape. They are doing the round about trip back to GP. Nice idea to add a train trip into this.

Hope they have a pleasant and safe journey.

Packed up and ready..

This pic was taken in Sabie in 2006 - that KTM was a machine and I must admit I loved it... Maybe I will go back there sometime.

During this trip (From Kokstad to Sabie and area and back) I visited a friend of mine Gavin, who has since passed away. RIP my friend - these were great memories!

On a recent 4 day trip through Lesotho with a bunch of riders. Sani - Molumong - Katse - Sehlabatebe - Ramatselisos Gate.
Much fun was had by all. The weather held up, some had small mishaps along the way like broken subframes, the odd mountain
goat that jumped in front of an unsuspecting rider and a 30 year old Tenere that refused to run. The XR ran flawlessly....

Awesome photie there Amsterdam! Remember bumping into a bunch of Germans at about the same time (79) when I was
about 16 and riding my Yamaha TY50. The guys stayed with us for a long afternoon of drinks and braais. Think that from then
on I became a big fan of the Yamaha XT 500.
Two german guys and a girl, one guy broke his leg along the way but all arrived safe in Durban. Wasnt you guys by any chance?

Gaan loer bietjie hier: http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=117936.msg2286288#msg2286288

Picture taken of my XR in Bulembu Swaziland over the weekend. We did 1400km of mainly dirt roads in 3 days. Very tiring but very lekker. This is an abandoned trading house about 5km's from the Bulembu border post just after the asbestos mines. We stayed in F1 and some other guest houses thats why I travelled so light.

Short trip, one night sleep over.

First trip so some extras which were not needed.

Some extras did win brownie points with SWAMBO cause she could drink coffee withing 5 min (stove and fuel tablets) with milk and not milk powder.

2 rain suits, 2 sleeping bags, food for 2 days, even though we will not eat it, rusks, clothing, tent, tools, tyre pump, matress(single) and more, but was fun.

Ha ha  :)
Yes, my rule for five days or more, anything more! - 5x undies, 5x riding socks, 5x riding shirts, 1x lightweight casual long pants, 1x shorts, 2x short socks for takkies, 1x slops or lightweight takkies, small toiletries bag. All fits in the mustard coloured "Big River" roll down bag.
I'll be wearing one set (undies, riding shirt and socks) so, with the five of each packed, I have six with me max. Stop for a rest day every 5th or so day so time to wash everything. Can take less riding shirts as they wash and dry overnight anyway.

Tank and tail bag always on bike (drinks, tools and things)

Honde;
4. Nie net vir Adventure bikers nie. Ook road bikes, Harleys ens.

Voorlopige datum: 26 Julie 2015. Venue; sal nog laat weet.
