Title: Name the airport
Post by: RobC on May 28, 2010, 02:53:55 pm
The idea is to place an picture/pictures taken at or from an airport where you have been, the person making the correct guess then gets a turn.
So here goes...

Same longitude (E/W), or same latitude (N/S)?

Same latitude - Wellington, NZ

Same longitude  - King George island airport, Antarctic Peninsula (and I'd like to know the story of how you got there!)

Stanley in the Falkland Islands?
Nope but about the same Longitude... :mwink:

Wrong continent and too far south. e/w = longitude. Rio Gallegos is about the same longitude as the Falklands btw. Has a similar look terminal building too. ;)

Had to try! :)

So, is it Rio Gallegos? Would explain the glacier bits (I think, been a while since I was there).

Nice one, tricky!

Not Rio Gallegos, that is on the coast of Argentina. This one is inland in the Andes. The "sea" is a glacier lake...

Too far south, we almost did end up there but due to bad weather we missed landing at the most southern airport in Argie. See my other hints... I will be away most of the rest of the day and Saturday... doing an off road at Rouxville and no interwebs, so bear with me till I get back. >:D

on the button heineken.

This is Courchevel Airport, a French airport that serves Courchevel, a ski area. Its elevation is at 6588ft. The airport is known for its a very short runway of only 1722ft with gradient of 18.5 %. There is no go-around procedure in this airport.
The airport is considered dangerous, having a difficult approach, an upslope runway and a hill
Nope have not been there.

Sorry for tha long delay, I have had some hassles logging lately...
We took off from El Calafate after visiting the Perito Moreno glacier (Wich is GROWING by the way) during me and MD's Argentina trip in 2008. We would have landed at Ushuahia but bad weather prevented that leg of out North to South trip.

Title: Re: Name the airport
Post by: charlw on June 13, 2010, 05:03:01 pm
Gibraltar Airport's single runway is one of very few in the world (and certainly the largest example) to intersect a public road. That's correct: a public road. Operating similarly to a train crossing, traffic travelling along Winston Churchill Avenue in Gibraltar is brought to a halt each time a plane either lands or takes-off, causing the spectacle seen in the photos above.

Title: Re: Name the airport

Indeed correct Mr isiTututu

It's actually a dirt landing strip called Henry's Flats - FAHF
Latitude:      -33.11667
Longitude:    25.755556

At one stage it was ones as one of the landing and navigation points for pilots in training from Progress Flight school in PE (where I learnt to fly in '96)
The beauty of the nav point was the fact that it lay in the kink of the river which made a good landmark on the paper maps being used for the Nav.

As far as I can remember the main rwy had a moerse pothole about a third of the rwy down and we always had to make sure it was a deep landing. Later on the airfield was excluded due to lack of maintenance and it apparently became too dangerous to use. Pity though - nice clubhouse based on a honesty bar etc.

It's an old picture, so the airport might have changed a bit.
My guess is Timbuktu Airport (TOM), Mali.  It's certainly one of the most well-known ancient city in Africa.

No, a little hotter than that.  Oh, when I said 'from a different perspective' I meant another way of measuring height from a different base.  The standards are 0 = sea level, then mount Everest wins.

No, not Tanzania...  sorry.  ::)

Tip: The mountain I was referring to is in fact an inactive volcano.
In 1976 a flight carrying 55 passengers and 4 crew disappeared totally.  The aircraft and the bodies were only discovered on that volcano in 2002 by mountain climbers, 26 years after the crash.  I don't know if the victims resorted to cannibalism... (at least you should have the continent now)

Ecuador, well done.

1st pic is San Cristobal Airport (SCY), Galapagos.  This archipelago is part of Ecuador.
2nd pic is Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), Quito.  Landing in Quito is quite nice, you litterally land in the city and fly very close to high buildings.

The Chimborazo was thought to be the highest mountain in the world relative from sea level until 19th century.  Due to the bulge at the equator, it is the highest peak in the world from the center of the planet.

I can probably add one or two to this one.

Firstly, just another perspective of Gibraltar.
The approach onto the Westerly runway is not as exciting as the Easterly where you have to fly around the rock, but that being said.... anything more than 10knots wind from the south and the windshear and turbulence will make you think twice on short final.

Secondly - Guess the airport - a nice local South African one.
