A great day at the Nelsons Creek BMW-gathering in Wellington yesterday ended not so well after Red Adventure came off his bike on our way home.
At the moment he is in ICU in Durbanville Mediclinic with a broken wrist, shattered ankle, a few ribs broken clean off at the back and a bruised lung.
He was OK (tough) enough to walk into the hospital himself after his wife had to take him there because of incompetent and slow response from ambulance-service.
For all who don't know him, he's a great guy and prayers and thoughts towards speedy and full recovery would be good at this time.
WERNER
Ps thanx to motorist and fellow bikers who stopped at accident scene to help and for JohanGPS who rushed through in his bakkie like a bat-out-of-hell to come help and arrange for bike (write-off I think after rolling 150 meters down a tar-road) to be taken away.
-
This is terrible news.
I will pray for his speedy recovery.
Please keep us updated with news of how he's doing.

It has been said before for other incidents but I think it should be said again. It's people like Johan and the others, willing to help fellow forum members when the sh1t hits the fan, that helps to make it a great forum. :thumbright: :salute:

Good Luck RA! All the best luck and a speedy recovery! :D
-
RA Get well soon..just remember it could always have been worse.
Think of the positive this means insurance will pay for a brand new bike and new gadgets AND everybody will be waiting on you hand and foot or "wrist and ankle" in your case.
Praying for a quick recovery.

Thanx to all responses
I spoke to RA yesterday-he sounds in good spirit, but pain is bad and breathing and talking is sore. Will print out this topic on forum and take to him.
Seeing a good and experienced rider like him go down in front of me on a straight piece of road is a mystery and the stuff that my nightmares have been made of for the past 2 nights. All I saw was a tankslap (caused by what I don't know yet) and the next second RA and bike was flying and sommersaulting in the road in front of me for what felt like endless- I was standing on my GS's ABS not to partake in ordeal- RA landed 100 meters from initial crash -site and the bike another 50 meters further in a dam of oil.
He was hurt bad, but lucky in many ways. That was the kind of fall that would kill most people.
His kit (helmet, gloves, jacket ) was completely destroyed, but protected him in a big way.THe kit was apparently not insured-what made me think -is mine and are yours??

TRUST ME WERNER, ribs are some of the most painful things, you cannot stop using them, for obvious reasons. It will be bad for a while, don,t make him laugh, and a sneeze could put him back a week, even a fart hurts for some reason.
Give him our best wishes.

Ag no man, what a terrible thread.
I wish you all the best, Red Adventure. Saw the bike on the trailer inside Hamman Motorrad on Sunday, I only saw the bent mirror and scraping on the right hand side of the tank, and wondered if I knew the bike. Today it struck me, Red Adventure, and I knew.
Good luck, God Bless!
-
Hi all
I spoke to RA this morning, must say he sounds his old self again.
Apparently he is working on the staffs nerves (which must be a good thing).
He says he wishes he could get hold of a laptop to get on the forum himself-
I think he has things to say about ATGATT
They are planning to operate on his ankle tomorrow and then he is talking about going home in another 2 days. If that is so I can only say one thing other than "miracle" and that is "his poor wife!!"
WERNER
-
Good to hear Werner. Thanks for the update.
-
Which hospital is he in, maybe we can send a bottle of whiskey to help with the pain
-
good plan, i think i read somewhere earlier he's in durbanville medi clinic? i'll chip in if we gonna send him something nice ;)
-
Everyone
Here is a wild card:
Most of RA's gear was wrecked (and not insured). The one thing that he was fond of and that did bring its part in the crash and that is now pretty much stuffed , was his GS-gloves. They are f*ck#ng expensive. I spoke to Chris
Hamman at Hamman-motorrad and he will part with a pair for R580.00.
I am prepared to sponsor half of that amount as a get-well gift. Who else is in ??
Ps. JohanGPS and his wife has got a silent bet on (no money involved)- she says he will be back in the saddle in 6 months. He says 3. I tend to take his side on 3 months
WERNER
-
I did not want to ask about his gear because the poor guy is not on his feet yet, but seeing that you mentioned it. What was he wearing? Did he roll / slide etc? State of his helmets / boots?
Can't we learn something from it?
Some brand make some strong statements. What is the real story?
Should we start a new thread on this, admins?

I'm in, for sure. How about we have a collection at Krige's in Durbanville (aka Alberto's) on Friday?
-
In reply to Red's question on the gear, he was wearing a Lazer helmet that says "modular technology revolution" on the side. It is full-face with a flip-up front section like some of the BMW-road helmets. This helmet took a moer-of-a-beating-it looks like somebody tackled it with a chain-saw. RA sommersaulted a few times with his head connecting the tar quite a few times. The helmet is still completely intact with everything still in perfect working order. It passes the test as far as I am concerned.
The GS gloves is lekker off-road because it gives you complete flexibility and
feel while protecting knuckles and stuff. A downside with RA's fall is that it basically gives you no wrist-protection. It did protect fingers from the tar though.
I don't know anything about the boots (his ankle is stukkend) and I don't know for sure what make jacket he whore.
WERNER
-
i am going to speak for droffarc (and under correction) but he too had the same Lazer flip up helmet when he came off recently. I believe he just needs a new visor to get it up to scratch again...
(it still didnt stop the bees tho :D )
-
Cant make Friday but I am in too regarding the gloves
-
Reply to Butch
Wonderfull idea about Kriges- I am just stuck in this wonderful pharmacy of mine till 7pm after which I will be taking my wife out for Valentine's day (can't Wednesday of Thursday). My shop is just down the road from Kriges so I can certainly make arrangements to drop off my promised part just after 7 if you guys would still be there, or someone must come and collect - Kenridge Pharmacy, Kenridge Centre.
WERNER
-
I'll pop in at BMW this afternoon and get the gloves. I need to replenish my ascorbic acid stock from your wonderful pharmacy anyway, Werner; we can do the swap then. I'll be at Krige's on Friday and the peeps can bring their donations. Those who can't make it, can PM me and fix up at a later stage.
How's that?
-
Butch
Good plan, mate - Must be a size 11/11.5, if you pop by I'll show you his old pair and helmet, got it with me. I'm here till 6 tonite.
WERNER
Ps where can I get a wilddog-sticker for my bike? I don't normally stick stuff on my bike, but you guys make me proud to .
-
Sorry just came across this thread now.
Get well soon. Praying for you
Do we have an idea what caused the accident? :?
-
I cant make it on Friday, have a bachelors on, but I will drop off my contribution at Butch's place, and he can give it to you.
Send RA our best wishes if you see him.
:P
-
I also have a bachelors, but might drop by Kriges on the way and make a small donation (I'm technically broke this month already)
-
I also have a bachelors but on Saturday.....MINE!! Have mercy on me....sorry major hijack, I'll be gone now
-
Sorry. Get well soon.
-
Guys
Spoke to RA just now. They were planning to operate on his ankle today, but decided not to because he would come out of theatre on a ventilator and they do not want that at this stage. He can atleast sit upright and talk.
They are moving him out of ICU, but he still cannot see too many visitors because his family is taking up all the space.
His priority is still to be able to get to a computer and back on this forum.
WERNER
-
Hope you get well soon RA!!! We'll pray for quick en healing and getting well soon!!
My girl works in the ICU where RA is and believe me or not but he convinced her right there to convince me to get some real protecting clothes!! And yes I did get some yesterday!!
Guys like him make you see the value of the right stuff and what it can be worth when you need it most!!
Get well soon my friend!!
-
Get well soon RA :!: :!: :!:
I'll las some cash on Friday, what time will you guys be there?
-
Guys
Butch dropped off the gloves for RA by me this morning (thanx Butch) - I put it in a parcel with copies of this topic off the forum. On a card I just wrote "Get well soon, Buddy - from the Wilddogs "
His wife (Linda) took it to him.
Will keep you posted.
From my side- thanx - this is how you make alot of friends really quickly !
WERNER
-
I'm sure this gesture is going to mean the world to him. That was nice.
-
What's the latest ?
-
Hi all
Charl's wife phoned me from the hospital last night, because - wait for it : they have no f@ck#ng plasters in the hospital. A specialist stuck a needle in his side to withdraw a moerse syringe full of blood and muck from the space around his lung. Apparently there is 2.5 litres of the stuff there that needs to be drained, but they can't put a normal drain in through his diaphragm because of his condition and the other option sounded to me like a big surgical procedure.
I phoned this morning, but they wouldn't let me speak to him because I think physios were busy with him.
I will definitely keep you posted as soon as I hear anything. Please guys, don't stop praying - he is far from over the worst. Without trying to sound negative- so much can still go wrong.
WERNER
-
Just phoned again and could actually speak to him. They stuck a pipe (called a spear) into his side and so vfar drained 1.5 litres of fluid. The doc feels things should get better now.
WERNER
-
Thanks, Werner. That is certainly good/better news.
-
hi guys, so, will there be anyone at krige's tomorrow night taking donations? i can't contribute much as i'm pretty broke this much, but will give what i can as i guess every bit counts...
-
...so, will there be anyone at krige's tomorrow night taking donations?
I will be at Krige's (the one in Durbanville) from about 17h00. Check out the Cape Drinks Friday fred.
-
F@K ek hoop alles kom reg, Ek wens hom alle sterkte, en sy vrou Julle moet mooi na hom kyk Kaapsies die Gautengers is moeg na my gekyk :D
-
Up to last night they drained 2 litres from RA's ribcage, there was still another 2 litres to go.
WERNER
-
Sheez...
I take it he can't wait for the time when they'll finally be done piercing, poking, cutting, stitching and operating on him so he can just begin to grow back together...
Thanks for all the updates.
W.
-
I will bring my donation too. It seems Kriges then today ?
-
Till what time are you guys at Kriges normally? I work till 7.
WERNER
-
Werner I will go at 17H00 but can only stay till 18h15 then I have to go pickup GPS stock for clients, so they can have a happy weekend with their new toys, hehe
-
You people rock! Well done. Small things like these makes the world go around!
-
Lets do the cape drinks thing at the cape drinks thread at Jou Ma.
I am getiing confused...dont think it will take too much anyway today, hehe
-
Wilddogs rock!!!
This family is a wonderfull bunch, top marks to all!!!
Hope improvement in health occurs rapidly!
-
I just went to visit Charl ... the sister at intensive, wasn't too happy...out of visiting hour.
Anyway he is full of life and smiles. The doc says we will probably go into a general ward later today or tomorrow and then they will operate on his wrist and ankle on Monday.
He says he cannot wait to ride again and hopes to be ready for his May Skeleton Coast trip...Hey that's the spirit!
Charl could not say enough about ATGATT - seeing Philip who wiped two weeks ago without ATGATT at 20kph and seeing Charl there is NO compromise to the ATGATT rule. Philip's grazes and road rash are much worse than Charl's (who slid down the tar for 100 meters).
ATGATT rules.
-
Glad he's getting better. Whoever sees him next please tell him we're all thinking of him.
-
Glad he's getting better. Whoever sees him next please tell him we're all thinking of him.
+1 on that...

Good to hear RA is getting well :)
-
Hi all
RA is under the knife at the moment - the plan is to fix lung, wrist and ankle at the same time. Will keep you posted.
WERNER
-
Thoughts are with him, I hope all goes well with the op...
-
Me again
Spoke to Charl (RA)'s wife - he just came out of theatre in good spirit. They fixed the whole lot it seems. He's got metal parts sticking out his wrist, a fibreglass cast round his ankle and they cleared out dry blood around his lung. He asked no visitors/calls till tomorrow please.
Lets give the guy a short break to get over the op and then let's get him back in the saddle!
WERNER
-
Good to hear. Thanks for the update
-
Some good news
RA was just moved out of ICU to a general ward. It seems he is on the mend.
WERNER
Ps - to get him back into things I took him the latest copy of Bike SA.
-
He's got metal parts sticking out his wrist, a fibreglass cast round his ankle and they cleared out dry blood around his lung.
Our first 'bionic' Wild Dog. :) Good to hear all is going well. Wish him and his family all of the best.
-
Sorry to hear this. I read the hele ding, but couldnt find a conclusive "this is why it happened".
Anyone know?
And speedy best recovery wishes to Red Adventurer....
-
How is RA doing?? We did not hear anything about his progress for a while.

Glad to hear things are getting better. After my recent off ATGATT certainly rules (especially gloves!!)
-
It has now been exactly 3 weeks since the fall. Here is the latest:
Charl (Red Adventure) was not getting better- Last night he was taken from Durbanville Medi-clinic to Panorama Medi-clinic where he will undergo chest surgery this morning. They plan to open his chest-cavity between the ribs, clean it out, inflate his one lung and close up again.
I pray everything goes well.
WERNER
-
Oh dear :(
Our thoughts are with him and his family.
Thanks for the update, Werner.
-
:(
Thanks for the update.
Yes - we are still thinking about him and his family
-
All the best, in my thoughts too.
-
Damn. :(
-
Charl is out of theatre and in ICU again. They had to cut through one rib to be able to clean out the chest cavity, so he will be sore as hell for a while- even more than after the accident. Doctor says they got alot of dry blood and clots out- that could be what was holding the healing-process back.
It sounds as if all went well - he asked no visits or calls till he is out of ICU please.
Werner
-
Good to hear, hope things go better now.
-
Lets hope that he'll heal now. Please tell his family we're all thinking of them as much as him.
-
Werner, thanks for keeping us updated , please wish him all the best from all of us. I trust the healing process will now begin and complete in the shortest period of time.
cheers
-
All the best man, hope to some good news soon
-
 , be strong,

Great news RA!!
I hope you get right as rain soon
have you gone to look at your bike yet?
Sorrry that I'm so quiet but my internet at home is so slow that I get frustrated when on line. :(
L S the insurance has decided to write off the Red Adventure  On Tuesday next week they are having a meeting and a decition will be made  I'm a bit concerned with BMW insurance but all I can do is wait for Tuesday's decition.
As for preveting what happen to me, always be alert when riding your bike and never asume you have it all under control. Thanks again for the well wishes my recovery is comming along much quicker now that I'm home.
I will be back at work in three weeks then I will be able to chat without frustration of a slow dial up. :D till then thanks again.
