Title: Jaqhama is still looking for a bike.
Post by: Jaqhama on February 19, 2007, 01:06:22 pm
The deal with Kwacker to buy his KLR 650 has fallen thru.

Kwacker came off it in the rain on Friday night, he is ok, but I gather the KLR suffered quite a bit of damage.

So I'm still looking for a bike.

But thanks to the generosity of a couple of the forum members even if I don't find a bike of my own to buy I can certainly make an arrangement with them to pay them a fee to use their bikes.

I'd obviously prefer to have my own bike, so I won't have to worry about any damage to the bike.

But I would most certainly pay for any damage to be repaired if I borrowed anyone else's bike anyway.

If anyone see's anything suitable let me know.
Rand 28000 is my absolute limit to spend.

Cheers: Jaq.

If a suitable bike should be available in Port Elizabeth, would it still be an option considering the logistics in getting it to where you will start off in South Africa.  It would be quite possible to freight it by courier company provided someone can obliviously receive it.  Cape Town is about 680 Km from PE, George/Knysna  is about 300km.

I am already commited to land at Joburg now mate.

Because I thought I was picking Kwacker's KLR up in Joburg I have already booked and paid for the tickets.

There's no changing that now.

You know of a suitable bike mate?
Let me know the details, sure we can work out someway to get it to Joburg.

Cheers: Jaq.

Seriously Jaq, you gonna battle. What is the smallest cc bike you will settle for? IMO you should not go under 500cc.

I know a guy who is a 'bike broker', I'll give him a shout and see what he can do.
What are you gonna do for luggage? What day do you land, we need to organise a 'Wild Dog Welcome'.

I might be able to help out with the transport of a bike from the Eastern Cape up to JHB if need be. Won't be free, but will be cheaper than anything else!!

Ther's a few KLR's around in SA for R29000 to R30000...but the shops are unwilling to bargin down to 28000 on the spot.

If I cannot find a bike a couple of the forum members have offered me bikes to use anyway. (A HUGE thank you to those people!!!)

So it's not like I have to buy one, I just prefer to buy one so that I won't feel completly awful if I put some scratches or dents in it.
Although I should point out I have managed to avoid doing any damage to my trail bikes for a number of years now.
(Must be slowing down in me old age :D )

If you'd like to have a chat on my behalf with the bike broker guy you know, that would be most decent of you mate. Because Lin is now coming with me it will have to be at least a 650cc bike.
Although the KLE 500 will take two people easily...but I dont expect to find one for R28000.
The BMW 800cc Kalahari would be suitable, but again I dont think you will find one for that price.

I am landing at Joburg at about 16.10 hrs on April 4th.
A couple of people I originally met from the bikersa forum have also expressed a desire for a meet and greet at the airport.
This could turn into an impromtu bike gathering at a pub for a couple of hours. :D

Luggage...I am going to look at some very large Expedition Sadlebags tommorow...a third bigger than normal cordura saddlebags.
I was also thinking of bolting one of your SA plastic beer crates onto the back rack...in Oz we use milk crates.
I assume your plastic beer crates have flat bottoms inside yes?

British milk and beer crates are useless, they have honeycombed interiors to fit the bottles in.

Hi Big guy :D

Well you know how much I can spend on a bike.
And hopefully one of the forum members would buy it off me afterwards and give it that good home.
If you'd care to PM me and give me some details such as how many kms on it, year model, general condition ect etc.
Has to be registered also, so I can just get one of the forum guys to put it in his name.

Thanks mate.

Jaq.

I came across this bike:

1993 Yamaha Super Tenere 750

50 000 miles on the clock. New brakes etc.

R 28 000

I have no knowledge of the big bikes. I can go have a look but would hardly know what to look for. I also dont know if it's a lot for the bike or a bargain?

Just thought it's worth a mention.

The Super tenere is a HUGE trail bike...it later morphed into the TDM 900.
Blokes (especially in the UK) have ridden the Super across the Sahara and other tough places.
It used to very popular with German adventure riders, you dont see many of them about these days.
(The bikes, not the German riders :D )
Twin cylinder motor, very tough and reliable.
(The bikes, not the German riders      )
But it's a heavy mother off road on anything but normal dirt roads.
Probably handles as well as or better than a big BMW in more rugged terrain...although being so heavy when it falls over the plastic fairing takes the brunt of the damage, I have seldom seen a Super that did not have fairing repairs to it.

As a last resort it would be worth considering...anyone who was doing long distance riding like say...the long straight dirt roads in Namibia would have a ball on it.
Very comfy for two people and luggage.

For the kind of places I'm going to ride in SA I am thinking it might just be a bit on the heavy side...although Lin's backside would probably think it was a gift from heaven. :D  :D

Anyone on the forum who would like, but cannot afford, a KTM 990 would probably be well off with the Super Tenere.
I believe that apart from the TDM engine the sports bike TRX also uses the same engine...so should be plenty of parts that can be swapped around and picked up easily.
The Super is FAST on those long dirt roads as well. 180 kph plus is normal for one in good condition. :D

Hi Jaqhama

I phone around here in PE re your need for wheels, taking into consideration your budget.

The only possibility at this stage that may be a consideration is a 1996 Kawasaki KLE 400 in good condition.  Asking price R17 000.

A local bike dealer/broker also promised to start looking around and phone me with info.  I specifically mentioned the 650cc upwards requirement.  There may be a KLR available.  Will keep you posted of developments.

Hey thanks Matty

I know two Aussie guys who rode KLE 400's from Japan to the UK, overland thru Mongolia.

The only problem they had was mud/dust destroying wheel bearings.

I have a forum member checking out a KLR tonight.
But the 400 sounds interesting, at least the price is right.
Is there an advert or a website that shows it, and explains Kms and condition of the bike etc?

Cheers: Jaq.

Hi everyone

I just wanted to say that I found bike, it's in the process of being re-registered in a forum members name.

KLR 650, 2004 model...just within my price range.
Very good condition etc etc.

I want to thank ALL OF YOU guys and gals who have been so helpful in helping me look for and find a bike.

Saying thanks doesn't really seem to cover it that well...but know that I am honored and proud to have you all as friends.

Whenever someone asks me if I have ever experinced the brotherhood of biking...I can yes I have...and point at you Wild Dogs.
Now get outta here before I get all mushy! :D

PS: Scooter will be arriving in SA very shortly, 28 March I think?

He still needs a bike...I have told him to read this thread and perhaps he may be able to take advantage of the information already posted here.

Cheers and many thanks: Jaq.
Hugs: Lin.

jaq-

glad to hear you found the right bike.  i have a crusty 1993 klr650 sitting in the barn at my parents house back in wyoming, usa.  despite how beaten it is, i know whenever i actually make it back to the us the sucker will crank right over.  great bike.

has anyone on the forum heard of other deals like jaqs?  like he said ill be flying in on the 26th of march landing in cape town with a connection to joberg.  so i should be able to get off in either city.  i have poor orientation there (first time to the continent) and appreciate any support in insuring i can find a bike and be on the road safely.  even just a beer at the airport with a little primer on south africa would be HUGE.  i was just able to unload my south america bike after 5 months down here and am hungry to keep riding until the money runs out.  so much to see.

Although you have been successful in getting a ride (the KLR), from a point of interest some photo's of the above aforementioned bike (unfortunately taken by cellphone. I know, quality sucks!) It is a 1992 model with low milage, in v. good condition, clean, asking price @ R17K.

Don't be too sure of that Jaq, try dropping it on the left hand side and see what your radiator and fan look like afterwards.

Could be a twin of the Captain's actually.

I reckon the lime green kermit colored KLR 650's look the best.
