Title: Hoofseun down
Post by: serf on August 09, 2010, 06:35:52 pm
We went riding this morning at Harry's quad near Bronkies. Hoofseun hit a bump and went over the handlebars. He broke his wrist badly.  >:(

He was operated on this afternoon.

Get well soon.

Hey HS!! Sorry to hear & see your wrist so sore... Hope you recover real quick... What happened? .... high speed forward roll? :pot: :o

There's a little forest near the start with some twists and funny shadows (and trees obviously), I believe that's where it happened.  The way Johan rides that bike is on the edge, cause he can, so I guess when it goes wrong it goes wrong properly!  Came back from my second long loop and everyone's disappeared, including Hoofseun...  phoned later to hear if he's ok, assumed he didn't answer cause he couldn't pick up. Literally...    :o 8)

No, it happened within the first few hundred meters from the start - fairly flat open section.

But ask him why I fell just before the forest section?  :pot: I politely moved over so that he can go in first in at the forest section and I lost it on a turn.  ???

Your arms are like the front shocks - they should take the impact. Problem is they don't compress very well.

When it comes to the moment of impact, the choice is very simple, hour head or hands.... so better the wrist than the neck.

Spedy recovery HS, you will need the whiskey grip again soon!

Hi everyone

I am overwhelmed by the responses.  I am doing well, got home last night, slept well and back to working the salt mine, although at home.

Update:

Went riding at Harry’s Quad track outside Bronkhorstspruit.  A track that really gives opportunity to do some high speed sections with enough corners for a years’ worth of combined riding.

Did the first loop of about 35km, then went out for the second loop, but did not get far.  Was about the change to fourth, the bike went sideways in a left corner, one wheel on the left of the rut and the other on the right, and them went down on the low side.

The left handlebar hit the ground and threw me off; before I landed I felt my left arm was not well.  As I got up I checked my fingers for movement and realised it was not the hand but the arm.  Then lifted my sleeve and saw some funny bent arm.

Only damage to bike is mark to hand guard that hit the ground.  My hand got in between handlebar and hand guard on the way off otherwise I would not have had a scratch on me.

Picked the bike up and started it and realised there was no way I am going to handle the clutch.  Luckily Reinhardt was there and lifted me back on my bike.  At the pits Wynand and the others helped.  Wynand stabilised the arm.  The break was a concern as it was broken badly close to arteries and ligaments.

Terence and Guy drove me to hospital.  I always believed I can handle pain, but this was very very sore.  45 minutes and we were in the Emergency ward and two hours later they operated.

Broke just behind the pulse, left radius.  They inserted a plate and re-attached the severed tendon.

Now it is six weeks in a cast and then we can start training again.

Again, thanxs for all help from the CMA guys at the track with the arm, loading the bike and all my kit and for the two track owners (Terence and Guy) for getting me quickly and safely to hospital.  Special thanxs to my supporting and understanding wife (Puddles) and daughter (Racing chic).

Thanxs to God for also looking after me, as it could have easily been worse!

:thumleft:

Moeilik om te se wat die beter opsie is.

Try riding a technical area through small trees and branches and have your front brake engaged for you a few times, and the handguards will go back on so fast!  Stopping very fast when you least need it is not fun!  It is 6 of one and half a dozen of another!  I'd still rather have the guards on!

I would have been picking some pretty impresive thorns out of my hands this weekend had it not been for the handgaurds, but I also want to look at some safer option. I've seen some guards that only go forward and and, then stop. Maybe a better option?

Handgaurds are required when hitting guinea fowl at 120 kph, was just before I ordered mine, clutch was depressed by bird and smashed into fingers, 2 years later still have a bump on my middle digit, think it may have broken.

Quick recovery Hoofseun!

Can send you a complementary set  of non alu backed hand guards to avoid this for the future! ;)

PM your postal address if you think they may be of help

Thnxs Cracklin

Received the handgaurds this afternoon - a brand new set of bark buster - cannot wait to start testing it.

P.S.  Have started prepping the bike this weekend, just three weeks then the cast will come off and then some time to stretch the tendon and get arm strong, so not so long anymore.

Yihaaaa

Hoofseun, I use the alu. backed guards, for hand as well as LEVER protection. Keep the alu guards, put them on a Yammie :imaposer:
I adjust mine very far down, to minimise getting my wrist in there. How about a Leatt wrist brace? Look into it Chris.
