Title: The Jaqhama and Shalako-Lin Route Plan and ideas thread.
Post by: Jaqhama on February 22, 2007, 04:19:18 pm
Ok...so we've sorted April 6th to April 11th.

Looking at a (not very detailed map...I must get a better one this week)
it seems to me that after we do the Trailrider Safari we will end down in the southern end of SA...and should therefore continue on to Cape Town and Cape Agulhas and Cape of Good Hope.

Perhaps after this we could ride up thru Namibia and then pop over into the Caprivi Strip to Zambia to see Victoria Falls.
Then ride back to South Africa via Botswana.

Cut across country and do Lesotho and Sani Pass from south to north.
(Is that the way riders normally do it? I'd rather up-hill than down hill myself.)

Then up towards Joburg and Pretoria then perhaps across to the Mozambique border and Kruger National Park.

Maybe even pop over to Moz for a couple of days?

Now you have to remember I don't really know routes and viable distances within these areas...so I am fully open to advice and suggestions.

Lin and I would like to meet as many forum members as we can during our travels. We're happy to stop by for a cup of tea and a chat along our journey.
We're also happy to have riders join us, show us around their local areas or ride with us for a day or so, or however long they have free.

I have created a new email box for Lin and myself at

ozriderz@yahoo.com.au

I had to create an new email box as my wilddogs PM box was filling up quickly and I did not want to lose anyone's details...like when I pressed the delete all button recently.
I also wanted to keep a seperate email site for this African ride.

Please feel free to email us your contact details if you'd like us to visit if we're riding thru your area.
Or if you'd like to arrange a meet somewhere along the road.

We will attempt to keep people informed of where we are via the internet along the way.

That's all I can think of at the moment, awaiting suggestions.
You can post up ideas here but I think you should only send contact details via our new email box. Personal security and all that stuff.

Note: WE WILL NOT PASS ON ANYONES CONTACT DETAILS TO ANOTHER PERSON REGARDLESS OF IF THEY ARE A FORUM MEMBER OR NOT.

Cheers: Jaq and Lin.
PS: You'd better put your forum user-name in the subject title of the email...otherwise we won't know who we're talking too. :D

Hey guys...

Is there a weblink or an actual guide that lists all the camping parks or lodges or properties within South Africa?

I cannot seem to find one online, tried various different search questions.

If there is an actual book or paper guide I'll pick one up when I arrive.

Cheers: Jaq.

Thanks for that Red...does not seem to include camping places however.

And by heck some of those lodges and cottages look to be well in the upper end of the accomodation market.

Jaq what are you gonna do without me.  :D

http://www.linx.co.za/camps/

http://www.sa-venues.com/caravan_parks_camping.htm

http://www.caravanparks.co.za/

I found alot of links with my first google search. Here is 3 of them.

Jaq maybe i can give you a tip. Use www.google.co.za thats the SA sight.

Check the SA websites checkbox and then do your search. 100% Success.

Jaq also have a look at http://www.jacanacollection.co.za/.  We have used them in the past for hiking trips, in a lot of cases you'll should be able to use only the accommodation to sleep over, especially during the week.

For the Western Cape you can use http://www.budget-getaways.co.za/

ALso http://www.capenature.co.za/  (Accommodation not available at all the reserves)

http://www.sanparks.co.za/ for SA National Parks.
Even though biking isn't possible through ALL the parks, accommodation is available everywhere - ranging from camping to self-catering to luxury.

I enjoy the parks & reserves for accommodation.

Once you have a basic route mapped out it would be easier to advise you on occommodation options.

Thanks for all the camping and park sites guys and gals...so many places to choose from.
Camping sites must be big business in SA.

Over here you find a river, find a shady grassed area and just pitch up the tent.
We do have camping parks but I've don't use them much.

This firewwod, toilets, showers stuff will be almost luxurious.

Jaq

I dont want to throw a spanner in your planning works but why dont you just arrive here and let the Wild Dogs take care of your planning. Just write down your ppoint of interests and rough plans. For example at Trailraiders trip you will meet a lota okes and they will point you in the next direction. Just hire a proper GPS and then anybody can sent you a map and route to your next destination. The combined knowledge of the guys and dolls on this forum is just amazing.  8)

Already had many of the WD's suggest places to visit mate.

After the TR Safari we'll probably head down to Cape Town and visit the WD's down there.
Then back around the Karoo, The Valley of Desolation and the Owl House, some of the Wild Coast, then onto to Lesotho and Sani Pass.
Then up north to visit WD's around Joburg.
And we've now been invited on another adventure ride going cross country to Victoria Falls.
(More on that later.)

Whew...that's going to fill the six weeks up pretty quickly.

Jaq, you want to go to the Kruger park? Not on the bike! The pussy cat there are not tame like you see on TV, and the elephants and buffalo are not friendly. Ask your mate Leon... when he surfaces again!  :P

If you do want to do a game park, might I suggest the Addo Elephant park? Smaller, more chance of seeing some stuff. It can be a bit hit and miss in the Kruger, its huge.

Somewhere on the site there is a thread about what parks allow bikes, and which do not.

Looking forward to your report and stories... :thumbleft:

Addo no-go for bikes according to LS's list.

Don't think seeing game is going to be an issue as we'll be in the Kasane /Chobe area for 2 days and doing a sundowner trip at Chobe.  On the  previous trip we saw lots of elephant next to the road between Nata and Chobe as well.  In the Delta we saw a sitatunga bull, cow and calf in the camp where we were staying, think the chances of seeing them again are good.

If you want to see game, the best park for that is Pilanesberg next to Sun City.
Its like the whole JHB attitude, quility, accessability and value all in a compact park.
1 1/3 hours from JHB, world class.
