Wimpie thats my dust in the distance and I think its on the D804 South of Maltahohe.

I have such great memories of this day. I got through sand I was not sure I was going to make beforehand.
I was also shown that you can ride sand well with Scorpions if you have the skill. And that with a pillion.
The guy in the picture had his girl on the back and kept on blasting past me after taking pictures. I was put to shame that day. He was also riding a 990 Adv S like mine. I realised that all that counted was skill. Not the tyres, not the bike. Just skill. End of story.

Wasn't sure where to put this - the SANAP thread or here. Opted for here as it evokes the same sense of "wanting to go there" that the rest of the photos on this thread do.

Taken in virgin territory on a field trip away from the main SANAE base just before winter set in. (The other picture shows the vehicles we used - not quite two wheeled, but we wanted to survive the trip...   )

(Yep, feeling a bit nostalgic this morning.  )

Two wheels rule!  :thumleft:

That is a road you must do at least once every three years or, so... It is very special, even is it is not a dirt road.

This was taken on the B1918, on the way from Spitzkoppe to Hentiesbay, Namibia.  There are few things as enticing as a mist bank in the distance after spending a couple of scorching days in Damaraland!  Notice the dodgy rear indicator, which I kicked off while mounting the bike.

Nah, it was somewhere around the Underberg area.... Was meandering to Sterkfontein from Port Edward sticking to all the small backroads on that trip...but on the exact spot....anybody's guess

Sadly I don't think there is a stretch of tar that long & in that good condition on the WHOLE NCastle/Memel/Vrede road these days. That is sadly one scary bad stretch of (mostly) tar. :-\

ChrisL jy is reg dit is die Gamsberg afdraai, alhoewel ons baie goeie reen gehad het tot nou is die foto in 2011 geneem toe dit 'n uitsonderlike goeie jaar was.
Ai gehoop dit lyk nou so daar.

BO Awesome, how cold?

"Head and mane" cold...  ;)

:imaposer: funny fuddy :imaposer: and the truth.

Around 15F or  -9C on that ride.  I wear a windproof and waterproof insulated suit.  The sled comes equipped with heated handlebar grips and a thumb warmer on the throttle.  I mounted a 12 volt coaxial outlet on this sled to plug in my heated visor shield on my helmet.

Overnight temps dropped to around -26c

The coldest temp I ever rode a snowmobile in was -35F or -37C???  (not sure if that fahrenheit to celsius conversion is correct).

The coldest temp I've ever experienced was in Houghton, Michigan in 1994.  It was -52F or -47C (not sure if that fahrenheit to celsius conversion is correct).  I could not stand it for more than a couple of minutes before I had to get inside my truck.  It felt like my lungs were freezing on the inside of my body and would not function correctly.  Never want to experience that feeling again.

It's not often it gets below -15F. :imaposer:

Winter lasts about 4-5.5 months a year.

It's so beautiful up there in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we call it God's Country.

Hunting and fishing are all superb.

It is scarcely populated.

Did I mention it's unbelievably beautiful??  I love it there when I just need to get away from everybody and everything.

Come ride the UP Chris!!  You won't ever forget the experience.

It would suck for you until your body adjusted to those temps.

One learns to dress properly for the frigid cold.  Layers of silk and polyproplylene, sock liners under wool over sock.

Citizens of the Upper Peninsula are called Yoopers.  Yoopers use big scoops to shovel snow off their roofs.

I got stopped by the police in Marquette, Michigan Winter of 2015.  It was -15F and the wind chill factor was in the -30sF.  Neither cop was wearing a hat or coat :imaposer:  Just their undergarments and turtle neck shirts under their outer cop button up shirts!!  I live in South Central Michigan, where it doesn't get that cold in the winter.  Yoopers are just used to those temps.

I can't take the cold like a Yooper but I am a polar bear when it comes to heat.  I just visited friends in Texas and Louisiana where it was in the 90's Fahrenheit.  I couldn't stand it mate, I was miserable for the first 2 weeks I was there.  All my friends were laughing at me saying it's just Spring, it's not Summer yet, it hasn't even started to get hot yet :eek7:  I'm not comfortable in anything hotter than 85F/29C.  I'm most comfortable between 65F-75F or 18C-24C.

What kind of temperature range do you experience where you live?

Title: Re: Roads in a distance.

What kind of temperature range do you experience where you live?

In winter at night it might get to below 0 but very rare, day winter temp is normally between 12 and 18 Celsuis.

Summer temp would be about 12 at night and max 35-37 have had the odd 40+ day too.

We have colder places like Sutherland who is normally about -6 at night in winter and about never go higher than 32 in summer cause it is high on a mountain ridge.

Of course then we have the two places that make out the outer suburbs of the Hell. Summer temps often 40-47 C.
Vredendal and Upington.
When a dog chases a cat in those two towns they both walk as it is so hot!!! :lol8: :eek7:
Middle of the Hell would be the borderpost at Vioolsdrift on the Orange river where I have felt 52 on more than one occasion. :eek7:
Title: Re: Roads in a distance.

WTF!!!  Holy cow man. 40-47C equals my death :eek7:

52C I would spontaneously combust.  That's the hottest temp I've ever heard of :patch:  Even Arizona tops out around 43-47C but I've never heard of 52C/125F here in the States.

The average winter temps where I live are 0F-32F/ -17C-0C with the occasional -10F / -23C winter days.

Summer temps where I live are 75F-90F / 24C-32C.  A few days a year may go over 32C but it's rare.

I watched a documentary not so long ago about the hottest and coldest places on earth where people live year round.

Hottest is some salt pan somewhere in Africa. Highest recorded is 68C and people dig salt there every day. They did a test to see how these people have adapted to the heat. They took one of the film crew and one of the locals and had them swallow a temp measuring pill that measures your core temp. They had them both doing the same manual labor for an hour and then measured the temp. The locals core was one degree celsius lower than the foreigner.

Coldest is some town in northern siberia that you can only fly into, no roads. lowest recorded -86 C. People keep small horses that live outside that they slaughter. Too cold for cattle.

Einste hy Rob.

@Big Oil: thanks, I like a bit of room in which to move around in

There are parts of South Africa that are remarkably similar to a big part of Texas.

My Afrikaans caption said that the 2 pix were taken 3 years apart with 2 different bikes on the Witnekpas (White Neck pass) so named due to the pale sandstone formations through which the crest of the pass has been cut. I also mentioned how dry the Karoo is now after 2 drought years.

The tall peak in the background is Kompasberg (Compass mountain), at 2502m the tallest free standing peak in South Africa.

Thanks Chris, I grew up a fan of a couple of golfers you may of heard of, Ernie Els, Gary Player, Retief Goosen, and now one of my faves is Mr. Louis Oosthuizen.   I've always admired how South African golfers conduct themselves on course.  Some of the hot headed American golfers could learn a few things from your fellow countrymen!  I met Retief briefly at a tournament in Grand Blanc Michigan many years ago, a gentleman it seemed.

I've read articles that claim Louis may not be the best tournament golfer in the world, but when him and the boys go out and play a non tournament round just for shits n giggles, Mr. Oosthuizen always wipes the floor with the other players asses. :imaposer:  It is said he's got every shot in the bag and he can shape the ball like no other golfer.  :eek7:  There's nothing he can't do with a golf ball, according to other PGA golfers.  Plus he's a pro golfer slash farmer so he has my upmost respect. :thumleft:

Mr Dookie, your pic looks like places I've seen in southern Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.  Very pretty landscape.

and now one of my faves is Mr. Louis Oosthuizen.

Small world BO. Louis comes from a small town about 40 kms from my house. With his first big paycheck he bought a what..........................a John Deere tractor!!!!! Real farmboy :thumleft:

Couple of years ago SA also had a women's champ Lee-Ann Pace that grew up in Mosselbay 100 km from me and her father owns a butchery in my hometown.

Wow, that is close.  Is his farm in SA or USA?  They sell John Deere tractors in SA?

I have not heard of Miss Pace, I don't watch much golf on TV anymore.

SA has produced many talented players over the years, is golf popular in SA?  Lots of golf courses?

His farm is between Albertinia and Gouritzmond in SA.

BO in the 80s NTT Ko-Op in North West province South Africa was the single biggest importer(business) of John Deere tractors in the world. The 30, 40 and 50 series JDs were very popular. The 4440 I think the most popular of all in SA. Not bad for this little country at the southern tip of Africa. :deal: ;)
John Deere tractors are the most expencive, but still is one of the favorites in SA. Some say Case is better but that is debatable :P :lol8:

is golf popular in SA?  Lots of golf courses?

Jip golf is very popular. Lots of courses and lots of them designed by Gary Player and other well known players.
Close to us is the very popular Fancourt golfcourse and housing development. Prepare to pay mega bucks to live there.

I can recall when I was working for Nestle at Riversdale in the early nineties: Louis's father was one of our milk transport contracters.Every day I could hear them talking over the transmitters about picking Louis up after school and dropping him at the gholf course and picking him up again.Little did I know, that this was a champion in the making.

Great info fellas, thanks.  Little Louis is very highly thought of here, well, at least among my golfing buddies.

Yeah, JD tractors are very pricey, they sure do know how to paint metal.  They seem to retain value better than other brands, not sure if they are any better than other brands.

Wow, Fancourt looks to be a fabulous course(s).  Way out of my league to live there, not sure I'd want to, probably not my kind of people.  I'd probably get reported by my neighbors for walking around the lawn shirtless, occasionally smoking a lefty in one hand, and a beer in the other!!

Trust me they are better BO, and the best looking colour scheme on any tractor. :deal:

They only tractor I rate better or on par with JD would be Fendt. Same high price too.
