Title: Misty Down - But OK
Post by: Cave Girl on August 22, 2010, 06:59:56 pm
Misty swerved to avoid a car yesterday morning. She did not actually fall of the bike, but still managed to damage her leg to the extent that she will be needing an op tomorrow.

She is in the Wilgeheuwel hospital.

She swerved for a car, and at some stage her foot hit the pavement or something, and cracked a piece of bone out from just below the knee.

Get well soon Misty!

Thanks to all for the well wishes, the update as per thread from Sunny

Hi, Misty is fine - just spoke to her, was in quite some pain before, but lucky she is a survivor and due to the great support of the WD she is in hospital now and will be on the road to recovery :) broke a leg just under the knee - still waiting on the doc to hear whether she will need surgery :(

PS: Misty said to tell you all she did NOT fall :) the impact from putting her leg on the tar to stop from falling off the bike, snapped the leg  ???

Thanks to Li and co!

Just a quick update, Misty has seen the Orthopaedic surgeon and the news is not so good - seems like the bone at the bottom part of the knee area has splintered and it will need an operation, with plates and screws and a possibility of bone construction.....but she is keeping her smile on, although she is not too happy about the news that she is not allowed on a bike, be it with or without an engine for at least a year! and no walking on the leg for the next 3 months! They will operate on Monday :)

Thanks Li for getting to me so quickly - had never been in such pain in my life!! And to Jules and Pistol for taking care of my bike.
Sorry to all the girls for missing the ladies weekend, was a bummer!!!

The op is for anytime after 12 - Leon & CG took some nice pics of the 3d scan which they will post later - not looking pretty

Misty had been planning and looking forward to the ladies weekend for some time, and seeing that she would be away I took the gap and planned a weekend away with my daughter. Saturday morning Misty phoned me: "I just had a little swerve for a car and another swerve for a tree but I DIDN'T fall off!!!  I hit the tar with my foot though and then couldn't get off the bike my leg so sore"

"Ok" I say wondering if I should say well done for saving it, and half expecting her to reply that she is on her way to the ladies weekend by now.

"I'm in hospital - Li brought me... it does'nt look good - so much pain"

Geez!!! You know that feeling when you really did'nt expect what was coming and you sitting helpless 150km away!!!

You never know how life will turn - we had just moved into a bigger place, started the mountain bike thing like Beemerman said!!! and and life was settling into a new routine and there were some good rides planned (on the motorbikes ok!!!). Unfortunately this is a setback, but only for a while - Misty is one helluva tough and determined chick, so we will get her back on her feet soonest whilst taking note of what the doc orders: take it easy on that leg (for up to 2 years, otherwise...).

Misty we thinking of you for the op today, and I will post later as to how she comes through.

I've just seen Misty at the hospital.  She says thanks to all the ladies for the flowers.  Her op is at 12noon today and will be out and drugged for pain this afternoon so please can we visit her tomorrow rather.

They are not too strict about visiting hours, as long as its not after 8pm.  So if you are around she is in Section 6B tomorrow will be a better day to visit

Thanks to Li for getting Theressa in hospital and sorted so quickly.

Get well soon T, and thanks again for organising everything this week-end.  It was lovely, we missed you

Misty got out of the ops room at about 6:30. She is doing well and just in a bit of pain.

Popped in to say hi this morning - Misty is looking great *what a suprise* but not feeling that good - hopefully just the morphine and anesthetic making her nauseous. She was a bit distracted when the Dr popped in this morning so will get the full account of what he did or didn't do later but seems positive that no bone construction was needed - they have not put her into plaster and will probably just put her into a knee brace which is great news.

Wasnt feeling to well this morning but I'm feeling much better today. They not going to cast the leg but have put it in a brace. It still has a drain and block in, this should come out tomorrow.

I have already started physio and if all goes well should be home on Thursday yea!! Going to be testing eSKaPe's cooking skills  ;D

Long road to full recovery ahead, so I'm going to take it easy and do what the doc says so that I can be sure to be 100% mobile again - thanks again all :)

Hey misty! What's this two year business?? I think you're just trying to snivel out of the WD's :pot: I was told I couldnt ride for a long time, but that rumour I squashed quickly, before it became a fact. Am up & riding in 3 months...... you can do the same! ;D
Get better real quick!

Hey Misty nice to see you looking a bit better this evening - hope they get your pain under control soon - Glad they did not have to do the constructive surgery - lets hope that the 2 years is not a reality but better 2 years now than 20 years of pain later.
Hang in there and get better quick.

Please consider hyperbaric therapy, makes bone heal quicker....(oxygen therapy, kinda like a decompression chamber)

I think the problem is where the break is not the break itself if that makes sence

Nice to hear your doing OK. Its early days now, but just when you think you've got the courage to mount a bike again, think twice. You may feel ok, but just a good bump, and all the growth break right there again. Rather get a second opinion. :deal: Wait a bit longer then slowly does it. The risk is just a good bang, in the wrong place and you're back to Square One. NOT Ideal, just for the want of riding again.  :nono:

Time to rest up now.

Misty taking it 1 day at a time for now, lots of rest and starting some physio in between, still a lot of pain, but she should be out the hospital Thurs/Fri this week, on crutches for about 3 months with no weight on that leg - the time factor for healing is like Cave Girl said due to where the fracture is right at the top end of the shin bone where it fits into the knee.

A freind of mine had a similar break, her shin bone split down the middle, also from a hard impact on the foot trying not to fall off, the bone was plates and screwed, took her over a year to recover, but she is about 20 years older than Misty....sooooo, there's lots of light at the end of the tunnel. :thumleft:

I have visited her, and Misty looks great ( sort of ) despite the surgery and knee brace.
She is enjoying the messages and contact with sanity.
They tell me that hospitals are nice, quiet, warm places. I am still looking for that one.

This may be just the right time to make cousins etc. By the time they (Yes TWO!! ) are out of nappies and so on, and easier to handle, you are fit as a fiddle and can take the chances to ride again (Mommie, please can I come wiff!!)

Thanks RobC and yup a physio is on the to do list - organising one as we speak - need to make sure this leg doesnt get too lazy! :)

As CG said I'm doing much better since yesterday. Had such indigestion and stomach wasn't happy so decided to cut down on the pain pills a bit during the day and it has made me feel much better. Think it might have just been a bit too much at once.

At least no pain on the wound and counting down the days till the stitches come out - 8 to go

So ja now the frustrating part, not feeling ill but not being able to move...

LOL, thanks Rob, but that is one record I could gladly have lived without ;)

Yes, Iím too lazy to search, but what exactly happened to you and was it your knee too and to what extend? How easy did you find it to start bending your knee, and did you trust it though? And are you riding again?

Maybe others who have broken a bone can give some advice too, seeing this is my first one, and Iím giving it my all at the physio, apart from the knee bending exercises as it freaks me out too much and I guess Iím afraid of hurting the leg again Ė or is this just normal and do I need a mind adjustment??

Misty, mine was the right hand Tibia plateau... my hardware looks similar to yours!
I presume you are still in plaster? Once that comes off the progress should become quicker. :thumleft:
My accident was 17 Aug and by 7 Nov I was taking part in a fun walk... with the aid of a crutch though, it all depends on attitude and how soon you get mobile... the physio helped a lot both physically and mentally.
I never ride without my Thor knee guards anymore... they have saved that leg a few times since the accident. :thumleft:

Thanks for that Rob - perseverance and hard work ahead - mine wasnt casted at all just in a brace set at 30 degrees to start off with. Just had another physio session and the physio spoke to the doc and he said no aggressive physio for 6-8 weeks still, and that he doesnt want me bending the knee more than 40 degrees at this point, so a long way to go still - the main reason for this is cause all the ligaments between the knee joints were very badly torn and he had to repair them too

Ja put into that light CG I gotta agree :)

I was lucky, did not tear any ligaments but fitting the hardware also involves some of the ligaments so I also had to take the bending slowly at first... mine was from basically dropping on the knee with my weight as well as the bikes... paving is unforgiving. :-\

My 2 cents.

Sterkte, P & M.

Hi Misty

Well if you can't put weight on the leg, I hope you've got a pair of crutches at least?

One of the worst things I remember about crutches is the fact that you can't carry anything. I used to make a cup of coffee, then I'd have to move it one crutch - hop at a time to wherever I wanted to be. So get yourself a cup that can seal (Ask CG to show you her AT cup, I think that will work great if you can get something like it), then you can carry stuff in a bag around your shoulder.

Oh ja, the bag is the other vital thing. I think my standard woolworths bag grew on to me after a few weeks
Good luck.

A bag, well now there's a good idea! As well as the sealed cup, I had one somewhere... hmm ja as I had the same prob with the tea, got a kettle and all up here, then realised I cant carry it and standing and drinking not much of an option either

A little update... (pic not for the faint hearted) ;) had the stitches out on Wed, the leg feeling much better, less pulling and the wound looking good. Just a numbness still in foot every now and then, but that should get better.

Docter's orders still to take it very easy, next check up with X-rays in 4 weeks, will determine progress then.

Finally had my first proper bath this morning (the things we take for granted!) and I feel a lot more human now, apart from the hairy legs  :D

I'm confident the scar will heal 90% - will bio-oil as soon as I can!  :)

First outing will be to Blue Bulls talk yea!!  :ricky: (another thing we take for granted, mobility...)

Misty that is the spirit.  I broke my leg in two places.  In three weeks instead of four the cast was off and I went back to riding since.  :thumleft:

Hey Leon / Misty. I also had that problem with carrying things around. My daughter lent me a big thing I could hag around my neck. I would make tea or coffee downstairs in the kitchen in a 500 or 1000ml bottle. screw the "prop" on tight. In the bag, over the head, around the neck and up I went. Soon I was pretty well independent except for the driving.

Soooooooo. That's where buddies come into it. Just shout if you know you need to go to this or that appointment, and need a lift. I'm here till Friday then off to PE again until the 2nd Oct. No problem, any time - just shout, you got my cell no too. DONT feel shit about asking other either. We've been there, done it, and survived. lastly , just don't get the DEPS, about you situation. I know the worst thing is being dependent on others, until you can drive a cage again. Get the DEPS is NOT going to help. Having an open mind, and accepting help where required and offered goes far further than anything else.

Just ASK. We cant smell, when you want to just get out of the flat and go have coffee, buy new clothes at your favorite boutique etc, or go do shopping at Woolies,  or just go talk shit somewhere other than home. So the offer stands, just shout. Any time, I'm here at my house /office most of the time, when not down in PE. From tie to time I go to Randburg / Florida for business, so I can come by almost any time.

Thanks Tweets, but not too worry all, I'm not the depro kind at all!!  ;)
And it's not that I dont have the means to get around, more docs order that I'm not allowed to move around a lot, so it's rather frustration at times, but that will pass - I'm halfway there  :)

The 6 week update already, can you believe!

Saw the doc yesterday and he is very impressed (4 weeks of lying in bed paid off!), the ligaments and bone healing very nicely, and the cut too, would be able to wear those mini skirts still  :D Now the hard work starts, starting to walk again. In 3 weeks I need to be off the crutches  :o  ;D nah I'm ready for it - and then life can finally get back to normal - well as normal as can be without a bike for a long while still...

Some pics...

Done any physio yet?

Yup started with physio almost from day one, but took it easy the first 4 weeks, as per docs orders, just some quad building exercises, etc - then the 5th week started to bend to 45 degrees, 6th week to 60 degrees and now I need to get to 90 + and have taken my first steps on Fri, aided though with the crutches, so I am getting there - the physio has been a great help in getting there a lot easier - now the docs orders are "on your feet ASAP!" or he will have to take me to the theatre and bend my knee properly :D so some work still ahead, but I will walk unaided in 3 weeks :) Just wish the knee would start to look a bit more normal and not like a big blob on my leg, but they say the swelling, scar tissue, etc will still take months to heal - I guess more patience is still required :)

It does... with use. :thumleft:
Unless you have a bust up leg like mine... it will never be "normal" and will always look like a great white took a nibble... :imaposer:
Title: Re: Misty Down - But OK
Post by: Tweets on October 13, 2010, 07:58:45 pm
Dont overdo it, but try every day to "push" it. Like a few extra degree bend every day or second day, and before you know it, you're back to normal. Oh, then of course NO pain, NO gain.
Hang In there, all comes right in time, and with Eskape around, you should be pampered all the time, (Or is Pamper an uder or over statemen)
 ;D

Title: Re: Misty Down - But OK
Post by: Misty on October 14, 2010, 12:27:44 pm
Thanks Rob,,, at least mine doesnt look like a nibble was taken, so there is hope then :)

Tweets, pamper is never an over statemen where a girl is concerned ;) and yes, he is doing a great job of it, although Im sure he's counting down the days till I get back to work :D

Ja you right, no pain no gain, it's just frustrating when you dont have the energy to push it further, but everyday is a step closer!

Consider it this way. Its like a mountain you just have to move. The only thing is deciding how bikg a shovel you can operate with. Right now it looks like you are operating with a table spoon, or even a tee-spoon. Your move! BUT move you HAVE TO. Stongs.  ;D

Normal, what's normal  ::)

Keep it up !

Racing Chic had her first eina tumble on the tar on the weekend ... she was lucky to only get a very grazed & bruised knee, no broken bones nor torn ligaments.  She was wearing jeans & tekkies plus all her other kit ... could have been alot worse.  :-\
