Title: Touring around New Zealand
Post by: Poffmuis on August 23, 2010, 08:11:59 pm
So I recently returned from holiday in New Zealand and have not done a trip report yet. Things have been a bit crazy as I had recently relocated from Cape Town to Barberton. I have day 1 - 3 here and will try and update 2 days per day as I go along.

*you can click on the pics to enlarge

I packed my GPS to record the trip, but navigated by map as I didn't have the NZ garmaps.

Here we go,
Day 1 22/03/2010
I pack the bike and everything seems to fit fine. It's a good day for riding, not to hot not to cold.

The target for today is to get down to Lake Taupo via Rotorua.
nice dog...in Rotorua there are many activities, here you can climb in a ball and roll down a hill.

The roads are fantastic twisting through forests. Testing the self timer...

There is a bit of a rotten egg smell in Rotorua due to the volcanic activity there is alot of SO2(I think) gas.
Close to lake Taupo is Huka falls, not extreme, but alot of water flowing through there

I find a nice spot next to the Waikato river to camp and open a red wine I had bought in town. NZ known for it's quality white wines, I thought I'd give the budget red a go :)

Kayakers are like the cyclists of the river, they just needed to spoil my view for some reason.

Good rest through the night and not to cold at all. Tomorrow it's off to Wellington.

Day 2, Taupo to Wellington
Today I head off to Wellington. The day starts of nice for riding, but I soon find myself freezing cold to the point that I almost feel like turning back to Auckland. This cold patch was on a road called The Dessert rd. It certainly is no dessert in the sense that I know. They frequently get snow up there, so it does get cold. Crossing this road I got so soaked that my camera did not survive it. Luckily I had packed 2 camera's, but this does mean that I have only a few pics of day 2.

Nice day to start.

I find a nice camp outside Wellington and I am the only person there. This camp also has BBQ facilities so I grill a some meat for supper. Not to tasty, but nutritious.
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/S9okGpAgiFI/AAAAAAAADRs/UKDWogQkdUc/s400/SANY0046.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/K8Ya03skD_Mcgw0IutKBYQ?feat=embedwebsite) (http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/S9okJBuQRAI/AAAAAAAADRw/VF2FVbmdvHE/s400/SANY0048.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/_3ZkxETO5CPWs-T7YkzTLg?feat=embedwebsite)

It got a bit chilly later that evening, so I wrapped myself up in all my warm clothing...
(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/S9okLvYv0cI/AAAAAAAADR0/3y4iROzLSrU/s400/SANY0049.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/e5hiaHndSSVHaRKxfIr_tg?feat=embedwebsite) (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/S9okNAPlvvI/AAAAAAAADR4/0au7pKReR48/s400/SANY0051.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/vXLyWe_MGQdxR9JkC9sl-A?feat=embedwebsite)

During the day in Wellington I had also purchased my ferry ticket on Bluebridge. Tickets are $100 for bike and passenger. Ferry leaves tomorrow at 14:00.

Day 3 24/03/2010
Today is water crossing day from Wellington to Picton. I rather like Wellington Town centre as it reminds me a lot of Cape Town.

It seems I was not the only one crazy enough to brave the cold for a bike tour..
(http://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THKpA_rK7oI/AAAAAAAADas/7ibdnnDHb-A/s400/SANY0065.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/frGUdmCfXRJbHbdNeld0_w?feat=embedwebsite) (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THKpCRRgAvI/AAAAAAAADaw/Kzidus9IVxA/s400/SANY0069.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/XVpkcc-p8ehDTUPfPffSlw?feat=embedwebsite)
Unfortunately I did not meet those guys. The got there as I was boarding the ferry.

Yours truly Leaving Wellington

The water at open sea was really rough and it was absolutely freezing outside.

Shelter from the open sea was clear when we reached South Island

Picton is a really beautiful natural port town.
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THKpGwop1XI/AAAAAAAADbI/29ZMkjdlDuY/s800/SANY0101.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/QX-KmgciDpGBmdltN7La1A?feat=embedwebsite)

The ferry ride is about 3 hours and there are 2 companies that operate ferries. Blue Bridge and Interislander. On the ferry there is a bar, koisk and a big screen playing a movie.

What a great day on South Island. Much warmer than it was at Wellington and thank heavens the wind was gone.
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THKpJdD6UzI/AAAAAAAADbQ/GQCQg6X2KTA/s400/SANY0115.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/-REmr_GsqLdPr2H8o6S6ag?feat=embedwebsite)  (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THKpK5q0JPI/AAAAAAAADbU/Xb-ieaKLuoI/s400/SANY0117.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/-4s2L6T_roxEaauF80lTBA?feat=embedwebsite)

I dont do much mileage today, as the ferry trip took quite a bit of time. I find a camp site for the night and parkdown.
Tonight I'm spoilt as this camp also has hot shower. The camp owner it seems feel sorry for me and gives me the left over scones from the kiosk.

South Island is so awesome. Glad I made the trip.
Tomorrow I head down the west coast to Goldsburough.

Day 4 25/03/2010
I was freezing through the night and decide that it's time that I need to try and find a tent. Towns and shops aren't to close together on South Island and I know I'll have to look hard to find one.

Despite the cold night it's an real stunner of a day. Nice twisties to ride al over the northern part of South Island. I decide to go and explore up some of the peninsulas along the natural harbours.
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THK7thc5VYI/AAAAAAAADbw/Luqj-JduVw8/s400/SANY0124.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/rIXupB4oaIaXHqFjXAPnww?feat=embedwebsite) (http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THK7uvP-6nI/AAAAAAAADb0/2Ckf4X_Isog/s400/SANY0126.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/4r_l8lW5sGJ35-__rDevvg?feat=embedwebsite)

The views are amazing and the mountain passes are tight and steep,

The bike is running like an absolute dream and life certainly cannot get any better. The road I have taken is called Archers road and runs up to a small village called Penzance.

Speed limits are low in NZ. Average speedlimit is about 50 and top is 100.

Goldsbourough is a extremely beautifull campsite. Cold water only unfortunately. There is still gold in the rivers here and a prospectors license can be bought for $25. Many people use prospecting to fund their travels around NZ. This bird (cant remember the name) kept on scratching around in my stuff and moving my shoes around.
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/THK77UpSxjI/AAAAAAAADcU/jdlS8WDjkwA/s400/SANY0150.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/vEFTXk83TrSGB72-4eB2Zw?feat=embedwebsite)

Garage parking for the night

Great day's riding and I'm fairly tired. It gets cold again as the sun sets and I turn in early. Tomorrow promises to be spectacular as the Josef Franz and Fox glacier is on the cards.

Great report so far and will follow with interest.

Just a pity the pics aren't nice and big, too time consuming to click on each pic to enlarge it.

Nice one Newguy. :thumleft: I spent 5 weeks travelling NZ in 2003, but unfortunately not on a bike . There are some lovely twisty roads around, which must be great on a bike. And there is amazingly beautiful scenery , and you can just about camp anywhere and be safe, there are no wild animals or criminals . Waking up to some gorgeous lake or river with the snowy mountain tops in the back -ground is unforgettable. I also liked Wellington the most . Keep it coming

Day 5

Cold night sleep and a bit wet today, but still good riding to be done. Heading down to Queenstown, one of the coolest towns in NZ
fuel stop in Hokitika,

a Great place to visit on the west coast are the glaciers. There are 3 big ones as far as I know, The Fox, The Franz Josef and another one I can't remember. I visited 2 of them.
First along the route was the Franz Josef. There are some awesome walking routes to view.

So it's off to Queenstown  :D

As 95% of the days this one also starts off nice and cloudy. It's not too cold though and as per usual I'm stoked to be on the road.
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TH1FdNecS3I/AAAAAAAADes/BcwOhfIzRhs/s800/SANY0218.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/4h2JAc21mdSwNtrAmgGgjw?feat=embedwebsite)

The pass going over to Queenstown takes you on the highest road in NZ. The view is great and one lone wind swept tree marks the spot.

Queenstown is a real classic beautifull town. It's really clean and full of hippies. I found myself broke and at one point  had only $5 to survive the weekend till the bank opens (I would find out later that the bank was open the whole weekend)

Oh Wow talk about bringing back memories, me and the missus spent a month touring both North and South Island in 2000, unfortunately not by bike but by public transport and cheap accommodation. Queenstown NZ and Milford Sound are the best places in the world I have ever been to, and being ex merchant navy I have been around quite a lot. Please post more pics :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

We have done South Island with a SA Taxi (Nissan E20) 4 adults and 4 kids and it was heaven - justmore beautiful (I guess).  Saw quite a few bikes and was truly jelous of them. Look at this water.  It is even better in real life.  Lost my camera in the freezing Dart river when I capsized my canoe. (spelling??)

I'm in for this ride
Did you ship your bike to NZ ?
Or rent a bike there ?

Bought the bike there and fixed it up, toured and sold it. I was there for 6 months.
Newguy what did the bike cost in Rand once you were finished with it? And how much did you sell it for?
Stunning photies!!

Today it's off to Dunedin. It's an easy ride from the west to the east coast of South Island

Once again rivers are everywhere, carving beautifully through the landscapes
(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhLWJSi6lI/AAAAAAAADiU/aq0NLTwqKIM/s800/SANY0293.JPG) (http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/dOLfWaxIIVT5RaRNiKlTCA?feat=embedwebsite)

Along the river I come to a powerstation and have a closer look. Clean energy...

Some pictures seem to be missing here.
I manage to find a bit of dirt road from Dunedin to Christchurch

Just remembered camera batteries had not been charged for a long time, so not much photos from here...I was camping, so no power to charge.

Heading from Christchurch to Picton to catch the ferry there is a nice little stop that is quite a popular stop. Here I had some perlemoen as it is still legal to dive it here

Picton really is one of the most beautiful areas. With many natural coves and harbours

Back in Wellington.
A buddy of mine from SA stays here now. So we had a pissup for a few days. He is also a biker:

Strangely this is the only photo I have of 3 days in Wellington

From Wellington I started heading back toward Auckland. Overnight stop in a small town called Timaru
Some interesting sheep dog training schools along the way. I watched them for a while and it is truly impressive what these dogs can do.

Very uneven country here

Camping spot for the night just outside Timaru

The last night of my trip and I managed to get well rested for the last day. Easy trip back to Auckland.

I think the flat battery kicked in here. My last photo I can find is of the Skytower going through Auckland on my way to the North Shore
(http://lh5.ggpht.com/_J_C8w7718vM/TMhkTWovUYI/AAAAAAAADkw/rts5vqUJuOg/s800/IMAGE_356.jpg) (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/SXrmmPK_MmOkVV9qSp945w?feat=embedwebsite)

Despite all the fun on the road; it was really good to get back to my sister's place for a properly cooked meal.

An absolute blast with no issues except for the camera which I lost to the rain. a Trip that I would reccommend to any of those that want to do a bike trip around another country as most of New Zealand can be covered in 3 weeks on a fairly modest budget.

Newguy out

Gee, how did I miss this RR so far?

Very nice, but too very cold for my general riding preference. :thumleft:

Ja, put all that airhead knowledge to good use and do a thread on all the mods.

If I look at the cost of repairing a KTM (or any other modern engine for that matter), the positives of the old BMW`s do make sense.
