Title: Subaru Forester on Bezuidenhouts Pass?
Post by: vinicent on September 05, 2010, 05:43:23 pm
Does anybody know if a Subaru Forester will manage Bezuidenhouts Pass with ease? I am concerned about the ground clearance issue.

You will definitely be able to reach the top of the pass  from the Harrismith side, but I am afraid to go down the pass would not be possible with a Forester. As much as I respect these vehicles I would say the ground clearance is just to low. You will have to search for alternative routes for the Forester, bikes is not a problem we recently went down the pass. VERY NICE!

I unfortunately do not have pics of the pass itself but at one stage I noticed a large oil spillage near the bottom of the pass which I could clearly see that it was someone's weekend ending with a shattered oil sump. The pass is very rocky but the road leading to it is a very nice gravel road and the scenery is beautiful.

If you are concerned about ground clearance, don't go.

Very nice pass, but I would recommend an average to advanced skill level.  And take your time.  Two hours will get you from Harrismith into Bergville.

If it's your own personal vehicle it will never make it.
If it's a rented vehicle it should make it with ease

Personally I think the Forester will easily do it, it's got plenty ground clearance (225mm I think). Especially the non-tubo manual with reduced ratio gears, where you can take it very slowly.

The problem with Bezuidenthout's is that it's condition changes quite frequently so you never really know what to expect. I cannot really recall any section where a vehicle with 225mm ground clearance will scrape it's belly, but then again, on a bike you don't really notice these things because you don't have any overhangs.

Thanks to all who replied. It is the wifes everyday car so I guess she is staying at home when we ride down!
