Title: Stations... Our Glorious Past
Post by: RobC on November 15, 2010, 08:35:25 am
I tried searching for a similar thread but after page 4 gave up. We see so many deserted station while out riding so I though of starting this thread and the pictures I took at Kloofeind Station yesterday.
Here are some of the pics I took with my cellphone.
The building itself is still in good shape but very vandalized with every vestige of copper stripped by cable thieves... signal system is non existent so I do not think the siding track is even operational anymore.
Seeing a coffin and a exercise bike inside brought a smile to my face... worthless in the eye of the modern scavenger it seems.
I wonder what it would be like to turn this into a place to stay?

Here is one I took years ago.

My comment about it:
Quote
The old station at Klipdale.  This has made me aware of how dignified was the old SAR architecture.  I am going to look out for it in my travels.

I have an interest in buildings made of corrugated iron.  SAR was very good at them as shown by that picture.
EDIT: The walls are also corrugated iron.  Klipdale is between Caledon & Malgas.

Nice one Toktokkie!
Agreed, the SAR built things to last! We have several stations etc. around here that are quite badly vandalized, cables ripped out, roof missing, some window frames ripped out but the walls seem to be impervious to crowbars. :mwink:

Besides the fact that a lot of these stations will be in the dry interior the quality of the galvanising, thickness & quality of steel was incomparable to todays blik they sell you.
Nice buildings :) Restoration project?

L, I think the reason why us SA's find it sad, is because it kinda depicts our slow degradation in this country, the slow demise of our old school infrastructure. My childhood was spent commuting anywhere and everywhere by train...at the age of 10 I could, and did often, jump on a train, stok siel alleen, and go to the beach for the day ( in CT ). Also, as a child, going on holiday by train from CT to JHB and/or Durban was so exciting....and those days are looong gone. At least I'm grateful for having that childhood, it was good!

yes, this is true...my grandmother use to don her hat and gloves, we would be in our sunday best, and we would take the train to Joburg central, and have milkshakes at the milk counter at John Orrs....its is one of my few memories of my grandmother....in the interim, i have travelled on every colonial train i would find in africa...the Lunatic express AO1 being my favourite...but dont know for how long this stately old lady would still run.

ps I've had the pleasure of being at Maputo sta., or should I say " LM"...and against my better childhood judgement, needed to take a dump, and was too scared to use the platform toilets lest I miss the train, so skelm used the ( stationary ) train toilet, and 'decorated' the line beneath the carriage. ::) :-[

pps still wanna photograph Kloof sta. of which the glorious old building is now a rip-roaring business, Stockers Arms. One can take a steam train every last Sund. of the month from there up to Inchanga Sta. and back....on my to-do list.

A thought occurs. What about a round the country station tour. The tour rides station to station to photograph and record them. Dogs join the tour for sections that they can. The same dogs that start may not be the same ones that finish but the tour goes on. Even have a theme song in mind..

We could make a project out of it like the calander or some similar. Anyone?

Yup, all over the karoo and small karoo there are these little "almost ghost" towns and they all have stations. Just think of the lvoely photo ops - and even camping in the old stations. Is that legal? I mean sleeping over in them? Could be a few days of travel heaven. Perhaps the long easter weekend? not too hot, not too cold.

A pity some of these old stations can't be recycled into WD overnight spots !
Local job creation?

I know an artist who dropped out to live in an Assistant Stationmaster's Assistant's house on a defunct station in the Karroo for ten years.  She paid a monthly rental of R50 - water included but no electricity.  She would rise and retire with the sun and only ate veggies from her own garden.  Very cheap living.

It is depressing to see how the infrustruture is just abondonded and left to crumble. Surely rail travel is the way to go to relieve our overcrowded roads.
I enjoy exploring these stations though.

the reason that many of these stations have been "left to rot" is there is no real use for them. today it is cheaper to send everything by road freight, so why pay for the up keep on a disused rail line and station. Should oil become massivly expensive or the counrty be in a state of war then i guess we would use the rails again, but until then, its all by road.

i do love rail travel and wish the government would allow private people to start up there own rail companies, then you would see it all open again, that would be great! imagine taking a train through the karoo for a weekend!

awesome.

Hallo Heimer.

There are a few such places over the country - mostly pubs and restaurants.
Spoornet will consider applications.
After all, you are keeping their assets in useable condition.  :mwink:

Wolwehoek, Free State.

I absolutely love the old sandstone buildings of the Free State. Wish I could carry this away and rebuild on our plot in Memel - would be a brilliant cottage!

The last pic is of the inside...    :'(

I may possibly have a connection to buy one of these buildings together with 4 hectares of land in the Langkloof.
Its already privatized (not belong to Trashnet Transnet anymore).
Ill see if I can dig up some pics.
Problem is that, after buying, you'd need to dump another 500k to make it into something.
