Title: Jaq has been hurt in a bike accident
Post by: Shalako on March 26, 2007, 02:00:52 pm
With only a few days to go I can?t believe I have to write this.
Jaq and two other riders were hit by an out of control four-wheel drive on the wrong side of the road in the country. None of them have been severely injured, not life threatening, but Jaq has been hurt badly enough that he will be unable to travel to Africa next week.
He has injuries to his lower back, many major muscles have been torn and split. His neck and spine were wrenched and twisted. He avoided the four-wheel drive but he and the bike shot over an embankment and he tumbled many metres down a steep slope, colliding with rocks and boulders along the way.
He had motocross armour on, that saved him from much worse injuries.
He is home now but is unable to write due to swelling in wrists and fingers.
Tommorow we will cancel the airline tickets to save losing all that money.
We have no other alternative. We don?t know how soon he will be able to ride again. I will not be going to Africa without Jaq of course.
Jaq wants me to say to Michnus that he still hasn?t broken any bones unlike the balsa wood people on the forum.
Jaq and I are deeply upset that this has happened, more than I can write here so I won?t even try. Jaq or I will write the full story of what happened later this week.
With regrets from Jaq and Lin.

Oh No!

This is really bad news. I'm just glad you're OK.

Tell Jaq our prayers and thoughts are with him. You guys are the reason why this Easter trip is happening and now we wont be able to meet you.    We'll be sure to amaze you with our ride reports and convince you to come back at a later stage.

Our door is always open.

Rotten luck, most important thing is he's ok!

Oz is drifting slowly away from Africa, but not enough to make the trip significantly further after he'd recovered  :D - will meet you later ....

Best of luck with your recovery Jaq

fek no    i hope you shoved a 6 pack of XXXX up the 4x4 drivers arse, followed by a size 10 boot.

shit. whats the prognosis for healing Lin? Please tell Jaq that we all send our regards, if he cant read this.

and according to the med pros if you have the choice between breaking bones and tearing ligaments, you want to do the former in terms of healing time.

shite. fooking 4x4 driver.

Jaq, I wish you all the luck in a speedy recovery!  I also don't think you should place undue importance on not being able to travel right now - besides as much as you hate having to cancel the trip to South Africa, it is important not to rush the healing process, rather recover fully so that you can visit us later the year without any hassles.  Regards. :)

Sh!t luck there, Jaq. Some of our 4X4 drivers behave like idiots too.
Hope you mend soon and are able to come out here later in the year.
Maybe Lito can babysit your bike in the interim? :D  :D  :D
If you are going to postpone your trip, consider September/October, after that our surrounding countries get extremely hot.
Keep us informed re your healing progress.

From Jaq, Lin typing...

Long Way Down.

Saturday was a great day, warm and sunny.
Sunday was freezing cold, heavy rain and dense fog/mist, not the best day to be caught riding the southern mountain ranges. All the dirt roads and trails turned to mud overnight.
So when the 4x4 came sliding around that muddy corner and aimed it self right at us it was either hit it or go over the cliff.
Some trees broke our fall (me and the bike). But I rolled a longggggg way down a steep incline in the ravine.
Bouncing off rocks and boulders and bits of terra firma along the way.
Eventually came to rest in a small swamp.
Wow, what a rush!    :D
Body armour cracked and broken, chunks missing from helmet, but everything still in the proper places, despite some rather savage aches and pains.
A later examination revealed lots of torn muscles, lots of split fibres but nothing broken.
Lower back and stomach rather sore. But 100 sit ups a day certainly helped protect the inner organs.
I am naturally very flexible, that probably made a big difference as well.
Everything that sticks out, like elbows, knees, hips, shoulders etc took a bit of a beating. MX Knee and elbow and chest/back armour saved those bits also.
Lucky huh?
I rode the bike back out of the mountains!
Won?t be riding for a while now I expect.
Although I sat on a bike today?when did the levers get so hard to pull in and when did the foot gear get so hard to manipulate?
Actually I?m going to spend most of the day sun bathing on my little beach in the front garden, and lay in the shallow water to soothe some of the muscles. 8)

Rule number One: If you?re going to ride over a cliff, make sure you use someone else?s bike. (Skippy?s XR 250?hardly a scratch on it. Honest.) :D
Rule number Two?makes sure you slow your descent by landing on small trees.
Rule number Three?makes sure there is a nice soft swamp at the bottom.

So there we go.
Why didn?t the guy in the 4x4 stop?
Who knows, maybe he was scared he?d hit us?
Maybe he was drunk?
Maybe he don?t like trail bikers?
Skippy reckons the bloke was a local, old and battered Landcruiser, not a tourist vehicle.
Maybe we?ll come across him again one day.

Skippy and Dan were ok, they managed to scrape by the truck on the rock face side of the trail.
Although Dan has a bruised elbow, which we suspect is where he hit the door of the 4x4x as it went past him.

Thanks for all the support and sympathy.

Too late to cancel my six weeks off work, and Lin's 8 weeks off now.
We are debating what to do in this regard.
Only a week to go until holidays start. Well mine started earlier than planned of course.

Maybe a couple of weeks on one of the tropical islands in the Whitsundays?
Although I get bored laying around crystal clear lagoons surrounded by half naked women. :P

Cheers: Jaq.

Sure gonna miss you and Lin -

Good Luck with all the broken, torn, twisted and strained muscles.....if it's OUCH then don't do it just yet!  Just Get on that Bike ASAP when you out!

Hope you Knit quick - 1 plain, 1 purl, 1 plain, 1 purl, should finish the jersey by the time you come to S.A!

What a rotten thing to happen....just relieved to hear that you and your buddies came out everything intact.

Africa isn't going anywhere.....and we will all still be here when you
do get to this side of the world.

Doesn't this period of recuperation count as sick leave? Can't believe you still need to take it as holidays.

G'day Madhat

Welcome to the forum...you see what lengths I had to go to get you here? :D

(Mad and I know each from a long while ago on a now defunct forum)

I'm kinda, sorta, really OK, just a little battered is all.

So when you buying a dual purpose bike so you can test your own off road over cliff abilities mate? :D

Ah and herein lies the problem...

I do contract security work...I only get paid and am only covered for injury when I am on duty.
Because I do contract work I do not get holiday pay at all.
Basically I work for myself.

Because medicare here is free few of us bother to take out injury insurance and work cover insurance of our own.

If I was unable to work for months on end then I would get a medical pension until I recovered. But I'm not that badly injured.

But...the reason we cancelled the airline tickets is because we don't envision being able to get another long holiday for a year or more.
Lin took 8 weeks from her work, thats 2 years worth of holidays right there.
I took 6 weeks...I normally take 3 months every 3 years or so.
The flight tickets and the purchase of the bike has obviously cost quite a bit of money...when you take into account the fact that I also won't be paid for 6 weeks. We also bought much new riding and camping gear.

So we are trying to get as much money back as we can...because I still have that 6 weeks to use for something...and I have no intention of just lying around my garden/beach for that period of time.
May borrow a mate's car and just go around the countryside with Lin.

I will have to ask Wino to sell the KLR 650 as there is little point in having it sit around for a year or more.

Trailrider has an expressed an interest in it...but I shall leave selling the bike until after everyone has returned from the Bavians trip.
The KLR is not going anywhere.

I suspect some people probably ask why I was trail biking in the bush with only a few days until our SA trip...if I worried about not going places on a bike because of up-coming circumstances I'd never go anywhere.

I'm sure you lads and lasses will manage without me and Lin (hard to imagine I admit :P )

Like someone said...Oz will still be here and Africa will still be there.
Lin and I will find something to do on my 6 weeks off and then I'll go back to work and start saving money again.

A minor annoyance...the airline company takes your money via credit card instantaneously...but it's going to take at least 6 weeks to get the majority of it back. (I lost $600 per ticket out of $2000).
The old adage of they don't mind taking it but they don't like giving it back.
The travel insurance company was great, one phone call and an email and they are going to refund the full cost of the policy I paid them in about 2 weeks.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

I'll just limp/stagger/wobble off to my garden beach again now. Nice in the afternoon, end of summer here now, temps dropping but still nice and warm in the sunshine.

Cheers: Jaq.

Ah Spook mate I did think of that.
Thought of hiring a car in SA even.

But I am not a car person...been a rider all my life....did not even own 4 wheels the first 20 years of my adult life.

When I did finally buy one it just sat around unused for weeks at a time, so I eventually sold it and have only had bikes myself ever since.

I get antsy and bored and irritated in a car if I have to sit in it for more than an an hour or so.
Hard to explain...although I do know other riders who share this problem.

SA for me would not be the same if I had to do it in a cage.
It would spoil the whole experience...so I would rather not do it at all if I cannot do it on a motorcycle.

But thanks for your generous offer mate, it is most kind of you.

I will recover, I will ride again (perhaps only on-road for a couple of months) and I will begin to put money aside for Africa again.

All the gear Lin and I bought will be used here so that has not been wasted.
In reality all I have really lost is  some of the airline ticket money.

In reality I have temporarily lost much more in not being able to meet and ride with you all after you have all done so much to welcome and arrange stuff for Lin and I.

That hurts much more than riding off a cliff or losing some money.

Anyway without me and Lin in the truck you'll have room for more beer. Lets be serious here.

Cheers: Jaq and Lin.

This has been a very black week.
Some of you have probably seen me post pics of my friend Terri, she of the blonde locks and cute smile.
My GF of 8 years, she and Lin and I are still great mates.
We ride together all the time.
Terri has owned bikes all her life.
This morning on the way to work in what is still "our" Feroza 4WD, a Slovakian guy in a sedan, without turning his head to look, changed lanes and took out most of the right hand side of the jeep.
The force shoved the jeep into the curb and almost tore the left side wheel off.
Because the old Feroza's are made of real steel Terri was very well protected inside.
The bullbar on the jeep damn near tore the front of the guys sedan off though...heh heh heh.
Terri is ok, very shaken, very upset about the damage to the jeep.
It was in pristine condition, one of the best one's you would see around Sydney.
Because it's an older model we're hoping the insurance company doesn't try and save money by writing it off.
Panel damage all down the right hand side, left wheel and maybe suspension/wishbone damage on the left.
Oh and a big scratch on the bullbar of course.
Fucking cagers...a truck driver who rushed to Terri's assistance (she couldn't get the drivers door open) yelled at the Slovak guy that all he had to do to avoid the accident was turn his fucking head and LOOK before changing lanes :!:

This is not a good week for the Jaqhama crew.

I am glad she was not riding the Ducati to work this morning!

Be careful out there people.

Ah and the irony of this tale...the Feroza is what I was intending to use to get around in and perhaps use for Lin and I to tour the countryside on while I am on holiday/recuperating.
