This is the cheapest rally to do and flights from SA isn't too crazy either.

Is there support or rental company's you know of the website is outdated like last year.

Do you by any chance know Peter Flack? I rode with him there in 2001 would love to get hold of him if antbody knows him :thumleft:

Kenisis, Im confused: The ceremonial start and super special are on the 27th March? Not the 2nd April??

Do South Africans need a visa for UAE?

Hey Tau.

There are 3 options
1. Gecko Motorcycles
http://www.gecko-moto.com/

Gecko is propably the best rally prep team in the UAE. They prep bikes for all rallies as well as dakar. You can email Sean Linton to get their support packages.

2. Sandstorm Motorcycles.
http://www.sandstormmotorcycles.com/

They had one bike last year and now i t sounds like they have3 about 7 for this year!

3. KTM UAE:
 info@ktm.com

KTM are the only guys acively marketing the DC a this time with bike sales and service at the moment.

VISA to the UAE

Most nationalities are now issued with a free of charge visit visa to UAE (valid for 60 days) in Abu Dhabi & Dubai International Airports upon arrival:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA, Vatican City.

The Organizing Committee will provide Special Entry Visas (valid for 60 days from the arrival) for those competitors and service crews from countries that are not listed above.

Please, note that visas for competitors are included in the Entry Fee.

For Assistance and others, there is a fee of USD 55 per visa.

IF YOU REQUIRE A VISA:

1.   E-mail a scanned copy of your passport(s) (high-resolution and in color ONLY) and scanned passport photo (high resolution and on white background ONLY) to secretary@atcuae.ae before Tuesday, March 1st 2011.

Please, notice that we will not be able to support you if you miss the deadline. You will have to arrange a visa through a hotel that you will be staying in the UAE.

2.   Please, specify the date of arrival and the airport of arrival (Abu Dhabi or Dubai)!

3.   Mention the number of the visas that you require in the ‘Payment Summary Form’, that you are required to fill in before making a money transfer of the entry fees;

4.   Visa to the UAE is an A5-sized document, which we will scan and e-mail to you once ready. Please, print a few copies and take it with you when traveling – you will be required to present it upon departure from your home country, upon the arrival to UAE and again upon leaving UAE.

Should you have any questions regarding the visa to the UAE, don’t hesitate to contact the Rally office.

I have done a quick cost of doing this race excluding flights and hotel it looks like a KTM rental deal will be about R71 000 excl FIM licenses and unforseen costs.

also don't know if the rental package includes tyres and oil.

Hey Tau.

I have Just spoke to Tim Trenker.

It sounds like you get 50% off Services and 25 % off oil, Apperently you only need  2 oil changes. I suggest that you send Tim an email at

tim@ktm.ae

He will be best to tell you what is included and what is not.

Cheers

A quick way to do a money conversion from Dirhams to Rands is to multiply the Dirham value by 2 to get the Rand value..1AED = R2.00 This is not 100% correct but a very close conversion.

I can provide accommodation to anyone who wants to come to the UAE for the Desert Challenge.

[/quote]Geez Bluebull. I am not sure what your Desert is like, but we have had two people try, one with a 690 and another with a 990 and they only lasted about 3 km into a trip through the dunes here. The one guy actually looked like i did after a Opfok in the the army after about 15min. lets just say that he was Humbled.

I did a day in the Dubai - Oman section on day appatrently day 4 of the old UAE race. My family is from Walvisbay so I have done my fair shar eof dune riding and lots of Atlantis. Those dunes where small, tiny, but on each other. Like riding over tipper heaps for 80 km. I was on a XR 440 what a lekker scooter. Those little dunes got my respect. The person that took me out was Peter Flack on his 660 r I was pleying a rugby tournament and he heard I was doing WC enduro champs and invited me on the ride whilst the rest of the team went shopping :bueller:..

Hey Tau.

Thankfully the Desert challenge is centred around Moreeb Dune in the Liwa desert. So there is no  necessity to have movement of Back up crews etc. We may just require a team to go to the refuelling points should there be any problems.

I am bargning on all my work happening in Moreeb.

Cheers

Yeah I know, a 990 is not the bike for those dunes!

But you were cornering pretty awesome on one on a dirt road in your RR!

So on a smaller bike you should be able to ramp those dunes at least 20m....maybe catch every second one.  ;D

Seriously you should go for in on a bike. Did you check those okes on the Dakar on quad's? Its a lot harder. only 30% finished.

Hey Tau.

My prep is coming on nicely, Although i should be training more, Currently only getting 3 days a week in the Gym with Gym, Rowing and Spinning topped off with a Ride on the week ends. a damn shame that i have to work for a living.

I did the first of my three setups last night, Fitted my Acerbis 24litre tank with hoses, The yank is about 3 years old and i am feeling that i may have to buy a new one maybe a Safari tank (Front and rear). I also Fitted my bash plate with water container.

We are going to do a shakedown with a 250km Run in the Liwa desert where the really big dunes are. We are going to end up in Moreeb where the base of the DC is. I will try and post a RR with this training ride after this week end.

Some Excellent news, My good mate Sean Gaugain s seriously thinking of Competing aswell. He is practising like a man posesed. He just needs to get the Pin removed from his leg after his fall at the end of last years challenge. It will be very interesting with All of them on 450`s Should he Race!

I will keep You All posted!

Cheers
