What do you want to do with lightroom? Raw? ..........

As an amateur I find PS overwhelming as it is.

Hi Hayleyscomet,
Hows it going with PS4 ? It is a very daunting programme but can be learnt fairly quickly with the right books. I have been using PS 2  and  PS 4 for a number of years now (just a hobby) and have found that the best tutorial books are by a guy called Scott Kelby. They are available in S.A but are hellish expensive. I have a few of his books and am happy to lend them to you if it will help you. Also a great site to go to is Worth 1000....here you will find the masters of the art and great competitions and tutorials. I enter a number of the competitions to improve my skills and get some terrific feed back from the real pro's on how to improve.
Another very good site is Photoshop Cafe, some excellent tutorials which are easy to follow.
PM me if you want to borrow the Kelby books and if you need any help with PS just shout..
The attached pic is one of my first attempts ....my wife has never ridden a bike ever ....pic is totally fake.

Whooops sorry about that first pic .....forgot to resize.  Compression has killed the second pic ......but you kind of get the idea.
Photo manipulation is a whole lotta fun.

No problem... Im in Somerset West but I am near Durbanville most days. I should have asked but what aspect of PS are you interested in ...Photograph correction and enhancement or photo manipulation  (the fun stuff) Im guessing that you are more interested in the digital enhancement and correction. I have Scott Kelbys book The Photoshop CS2 book for Digital Photographers. which is excellent for learning enhancement techniques. I also have a book by Laurie McCanna called "How to do everything in Photoshop" Its a bit outdated but its still relevent as the basics are the same in all the PS editions. I can also lend you "Photoshop Down and dirty tricks" by Scott Kelby... brilliant book for learning photo manipulation and digital design concepts. Give me a shout on 0835591316 and we can make arrangments to drop the books off
 Cheers Brian

PS Attached a couple of my pics to show you what can be done.

Ja, but my point is whether that program can be installed without licence. (not that you or me would do that  >:D )

And what are you using LR for? Is it worth a try?

Thanks

well then I better start shooting in raw  :thumleft:
the softwear I got with the camera is ok but I wish for something stronger or with more options to do corrections/enhancements.

FWIW, I use Corel PhotoPaint X3 - it can do most things that PhotoShop can do and I think pretty much everything that  LR can. I find it easier to use than PS. They make a stand-alone version called  PaintShop Pro X3 for only R899.

lightroom = <3

Seriously cant be bothered to shoot anything in jpg format any more, you just loose out on all the fine control of your end result

heres a quick example, despite the image being shot as jpg originally, doing some color correction and "undo'ing" allot of what the camera does in terms of color correction and white balance etc you can still get far better end results. now had this been shit in raw I would have had even more room to get the image I want

I still use ps to fine tune though and whats neat is the cmd e function that spits lr image out in ps

But still trying to get into it

What photographic club do you belong to? Been concedering joining a club but I am not sure witch one.
I have been playing around but think the club thing might just exposed you to more things and the challenges Will force you to put some effort into it.

Thanks

These are CS3 edits, portraits from yesterdays wedding in Harties, was damn hot when I took the images in the field of sunflowers, the image of the bride was edited with a mild colour layer over a ps plugin by alien skin called exposure it a film emulator that is real neat.

I am not trying to justify pirating software, but the costs to SA are ridiculous.
Over R10k for Photoshop?  Which, for the amateur enthusiast is madness.  When a person invests that sort of cash, you would like to justify the expense somehow.  With our bikes the cost is justified as the pleasure we derive from them is priceless.
Unless our amateur photographers can start selling their shots for a profit, they cannot justify R10K for software.
I am sure that once a photographer starts making a reasonable profit from his/her shots, they will buy the expensive software.  Until then, piracy is the only way to get proficient with the package.
Bill Gates said that without early piracy of his OS, he would never have had the market exposure that he currently enjoys.

Once I started making money from AutoCad, I bought the product.  But I needed to become proficient to justify this very high cost and in the beginning, I used a pirate copy.  I still believe in the inate honesty in the average, reasonable person.

One thing I would watch out for with doing bleach bypasses is your sky and helmets/heads are blending a lil to easily together, maybe try bumping the contrast and exposure a few notices down.. possibly even recovery (edit: bump recovery up not down)

I will get in touch. I looked at the Tafelberg club that meet in the Bellville area but one tend to get the feeling that you might struggle as a outsider to settle in and there is also monthly challenges which could challenge the creative juices.
