Title: *How do you rate <<YOUR>> skill level? (POLL)
Post by: terminator1 on January 31, 2011, 08:33:54 am
Rate your OVERALL DS bike skill level in off-road conditions, including dirt, sand, mud, rocks, water, climbs, descents, twee-spoor and midel-mannetjies etc.

Use your own confidence levels and observations of the skills of other riders as the basis for your rating.

Below average but not too poor.
Confident too as I very rarely fall. Probably because I go too slow to fall ;D

Or maybe my skills level is so seriously kak tha I don't even realise how kak?

I think this poll be need to use some sort of yardstick.

something like:
have you done an off-road intro-course?
(where you average there or not kinda thing)
Was the country trax course difficult?

Judging your skills by comparing them to the people you ride with isn't a good way of doing it.

yeah agreed, but there is no objective way to do it, unless everyone was rated at a skills test track.

A very difficult question for me to answer truthfully J Dog........depends on
Who i'm with and how many Zamaleks have been consumed.....
CGazer, what you say however is very true..... a course sets a standard base line which takes some of the subjectivity out of it. I have never done a course and should do one, somehow i've always got by and learned the hard way.......been riding for 35 years on and off! I rated myself slightly below average.... I don't know what average is! :thumleft:

I did the course a few years back (just the normal one, not advanced and not intro).  It was PISSING down that weekend, so we only had mud riding, no sand.   :thumleft:

Fell off the whole time, and struggled on the "slalom traffic cones" a bit, but got it right in the end.

Since then, we've done some interesting trips all over, including muddy Wild Coast.  There I fell off almost every 5 meters.

So if that's any yard stick to go by, I'm def. below *average*.

Jdog, now this is an excellent poll! The way you set it up with a fair number of choices makes it statistically valid. The true situation (distribution) of skills should be gaussian, centred around average. It is already clear from the distribution that the average is slightly above "average", meaning we all (or most) think we are just a little better than we actually are!  Nothing wrong with self-confidence!

this is the crux of the matter. I'm interested in the distibution of the normal/guassian curve, the median, where it's centered etc. I have similar data in unrelated fields for comparison  ;)

I ride a DRZ- can I enter the poll?
I used to ride a DR650 and just couldn't handle the shame of dropping it all over the show in the sand, I was/am a severe newbie. Now I am on a DRZ and that 50kg weight saving makes a big difference. But I have been practicing skills and getting some coaching and stuff. So every now and then I have a day where I feel bakgat and I ride better (is faster better?) than most of the guys on the road. then the following weekend I will spend the entire ride checking the feel of various types of dirt with my helmet. Based on that description I am average, hey?

j-dog, in terms of methodology I think your wording will affect responses as well. I would much rather tick "complete newbie" or "seriously kak" than "poor", even though "poor" is not as bad on your likert scale as the other two, it sounds much worse. so I ticked "complete newbie" but I am somewhere in that poor - to - average range.

also, i heard a stat that 80% of men rate themselves as 'above average' drivers, I assume the same will be found here.

Does this help? I've kept the original wording mostly (so as not to affect the results to date too much) but added numbers...

I filled out average.  But also having a bit of a problem with the "Benchmark".

Years ago I was riding a Honda 250 and picked up some skills and became quite fast around Honda Park and Blue Gums (1980's and on).

I also had a Maico 250 and an IT 490 with drum brakes (the drums gave you no assist wth breaking for a while after going through water) and the Yami tought me a lot about EMERGENCY DRILLS like leaping of before you crash etc.

Now I am idling along on a BMwobble me... and here-in lies the question.....

Sure I have accumalated some skills... but I may have been doing the wrong thing for the last 30 years...

I fall less than when I started but still more often than I would want to !!

Saturday I was "testing" my new Heidi back and TKC front by riding in the rain with my mate on his brand new 300 KTM.

Now he is new at it and I am on a 1150 and during this jol I fell over Twice (2 x,  twee keer ) and he never fell over once.

So when it comes to answering... (he with no experience and me with years of riding... WTF)... I assume that one can blame the tool I used for crossing the rivers and muddy quarries with...

But should an AVERAGE rider not know better than to do this ...

I think I'm just below average.   :ricky:

I've never been for any training. Been through the baviaanskloof at a nice pace through klaarstroom at a very good pace all off-road.
Can't remember what speed but in klaarstroom my GS1100 bottomed out a few time. Over the swartberge and from the turn off to the desend into 'die hell' I was doing about 120km/h. over one of the hump on this stretch the bike was air-born but putting it down didn't bottom out to my surprise.  :thumleft: this was great stuff

...but i don't like any slippery mud and very steep descends.  :thumleft:

I was thinking about this recently. I went to drag footpegs in the lower free state this weekend on a road I did not know. While doing that I found myself regularly doing mid-turn corrections, due to misjudging the entry points. Before the weekend I watched an interview with Ben Spies, where it was pointed out how he was able to run incredible lap times on tracks he did not know. The key obviously being his ability to get the correct line and entry points. And that in itself is the reason I am sitting here and not competing at their level - I do not have their ability to magically see the best line. And I weigh at least double what those riders weigh.

My point is: we rate ourselves according to our known abilities, and perhaps we have some comparison with riding buddies and so on. However when we compare to someone like Marc Coma, we realize our deficiencies, and we adjust our ratings. This poll asks me to rate myself - how good I think I am, but it does not set a benchmark. To get a reasonable rating it has to be relative to a specific benchmark.

I also want to mention that rating according to years experience riding is worthless. It just means you have been doing it wrong for longer.

Really ..............whats the point of this poll? ???

Everybody is being very polite and modest. Where are the ' I'm F$&^$&Cking Brilliant guys' out there? If someone thinks he's the shit on a bike than we would most would probably think he's a tosser for saying so?)

(if Bluebull2007 did that rally in Brazil, then surely he's average must be higher?)

How can some of you be crap on tar but not bad off-road? does not make sense.

......or are we just becoming old and carefull? ( Where's Etiiene2T - he's always confidant with his statements?).....maybe there should be an age catagory around the averages???

.....still don't see the bigger picture of this poll. ???

Eazy...come watch me!

It's like moving into a different mind set moving off tar for me.

Tar = Lot's of road users and dangers = concentration and focus split between many variables to take into account.

Dirt = Sort of the opposite of above. Focus is more on the riding and road ahead than other external factors.

Maybe not a good analogy and definitely not the best approach to follow. One should be equally vigilant whether tar or dirt.

I sort off can keep up with the okes on rides when we are on dirt. When we hit the tar sections, I fall way behind. :P

My take on it anyway as a recreational rider. For the experienced guys who does thousands of km's tar/dirt each year, the above is maybe not relevant.

Above applies to me also

Furthermore I love dirt riding and I am comfortable on most surfaces, not on sand thou and I hate rocks, big rocks, Roof of Africa type rocks, rocks I really hate them, so this poll applies to me and I think it is relevant.

On sand I am not comfortable on my 950, but I have no problem on my 690, that's why I bought the 690 to do sand and tours with lost of sand on it, big difference between 690 on sand and the 950.

I think it is a great poll. Not all DS owners are Dogs so it is possible that the average Dog is a better rider than the average DS owner. We are more fanatical anyway. >:D

My gravel skills is a lot better than my ability to ride on tar as I do not normally even use my bike for tar riding. That said, I think your off-road skill will be directly link to your fitness level.

It does not matter how good you are, if you get tired the sandmonster will get you!  :ricky:

Chairman (your nickname is Awesome bTW) I dont know where my average is.... :dontknow: So I would have to agree with you.

Give me a 450 and I will probably be above average on a fast, widing track, but maybe below average on a tough Etienne/2SD/Sharkza type enduro/trial. I guess in a race you know where you are so someone like Etienne could say he is top notch (in the novice category?) because he has the placing to prove it late last year. Similarly coming 8th in my class in an FIM might put me in the above average category, but below average if we take the years results into account because I only entered one of the events.

I guess seeing this is a DS site maybe we are talking about a riding DS bikes on an extended route through southern Africa. Now do we benchmark ourselves against a route like the one we saw in Angola its not like they said (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=10359.0), or on perhaps an easier one with a bit of Verneukpan in the mud like we saw in Rynets report (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=62241.0) ??? <edit>Not so say that Vernuekpan under water is easy, its not!  Im sure there would be some who would do well in the one but not in the other.

I use these two RR's as benchmark on a bike 200kg bike (yes a BIG bike Dan, not a crappy little 2 wheeler with a sewing machine for an engine ;D), then perhaps I might measure be above average. Even this is subjective because I have not ridden with many of you. I might be a pissie on a bike and you might all be super-adventurers for all I know!?

No-one will have the privilage of seeing me on a GS :peepwall:
Unless it is for charity.
I have made a point of entering competitions in every discipline of bikesport I could. I rode 4years of enduros, I did 2years of foot-ups[trials], I did a year of roadracing at Killarney, 4years of W/Tvl Aussie bike racing at Springvale in Stilfontein, MX in the early 80's, Speedway style racing, I tried all and not just trackdays, but actual organised racing. You know what? I found out that I'm just average in that world.
Like Shark said, go race and learn what average means.

......lets just wait for Ettiene2T to finish showing off..........done?.......ok great.,,

If we are talking about general DS riding, once again I feel this poll is pointless.

Is DS riding not really just about the ability to travel where the tar road ends and to see this (or any other ) beautiful country of ours on the back of a motorcycle.

There seem to be this silent (but really loud) insider competition of who rides what, how fast. how gnarly, what extreme terrain etc etc, which seems more at home on some sort of enduro/roof/romaniacs type forum for teenagers.

Some have boasted before of clocking 200 on gravel highways,(and then still argue between clock speed and GPS speed wtf?) or traveling up bike breaking terrain to prove what exactly??

...That you have shit load of money and can replace bikes on the drop of a hat?, or that you value your life only up to the point of hitting some or other gravel highway obstacle at breakneck speed?  (instant Hero status?)

Any half wit fool knows that in order to any job properly you need the right tool......and the right tool does make difficult task much easier..,.. point being that unless you have the exact tool for each application (ie 10 different bikes) then no problem, but for the rest make due with what you have and at least use that one tool (bike) to the best of your abilities, whatever that might be.

Chairman, I am one of the forum members most guilty of what you guys like to call dickswinging. In pre-school we raced each other on foot, then came bicycles and the race was on again. Then onto motorbikes and guess what? We raced each other again. So perhaps my bragging on here is after all not so much dickswinging as it is a redblooded need to do some friendly competition. This is so normal it's not even funny.
As for this thread, completely impossible to measure, unless we have a NATIONAL SKILLS BASH!!!!!!!!!
Hoelykit?

2SD - Some people can dickswing with a fair amount of tongue in cheek and knowing fairly well and their limits and size...........then there are those for whom dickswinging is just a cover up for the real their real size issues....

......I believe you would fall in the first catagory. ..(I think  :peepwall:  ;D)

Thank you Chairman, I was sort of expecting a sharper tongue :mwink:, I tend to agree with you, but on a forum like this, how do you ever know who is good and at what level. This is why I have invited Wilddogs to meet at Maccassar for time trial, funrides, etc, in this fashion you can see who is who and then know who to ask along on a fast ride and when you will have to go slowly in a group.
On my 1st ride on Andy660"s alt. route, a WD came up to me about halfway on the route and asked me why I'm riding at the back, cause he thought I was a fast guy. If you're in a relatively slow group, do'nt try to be Travis Pastrana. I've seen Andy move it up for short bursts and I can tell you he is fast, yet you never see him leave the group behind, always wait up regularly.
What about a local WD enduro series? Unofficial, at Macassar, Atlantis, Quarry, with different classes. Your mouths will hang open about who is quick and who is dick :xxbah:

Enter some competitive riding to be put in your place.

A Trial or and Enduro to open your eyes to what you think is above average.

Spot on !!!!

I really thought I was the bees knees

I remember training my ass off in Dec 2008 / Jan 2009. In February 2009 I entered my first race.
Hells Bells !!!! - was I brought down to size !

I think it is important to remember what the essence is of adventure riding and the Wild Dog fraternity. As competitive as we may all be in a jocular sort of way, I believe that actual any competition (apart from a technical skills challenge) has no real place in dual-sport riding.

Enduro and MX are different beasts entirely.

my point exactly.   :thumleft:

Rating with competition is also a klomp stront.

Fast is not everything. Fast can be faked with dumb.
Is a trials rider a better rider than a motoGp ?
Does a MX rider make a good enduro rider?

In each type of riding there are skills required, all of them come together in DS I think.

I rated myself as "well below average" after reading through the thread and comparing my skills to the talk here.

Then, this morning I thought, I ride through Woodstock in peak hour daily, surely that must count for something?

Following the Dakar videos, I noticed that Marc Coma does some of my moves......particularly when he came off.... :imaposer:

Nah, seriously, I think that average would descibe me pretty well. Done the courses and all, green, orange and red routes on the GS challenges, but I can't say I feel comfortable at the difficult stages.

Need a small bike to practice and get more confidence which I would use when on the big baby.
