Title: Around East London & Hogsback in 2 Days
Post by: JMOL on February 10, 2011, 08:56:49 pm
My brother's son (so I think he is my nephew - ai hierdie Ingils) who works in South Dekota, USA, was on leave and he visited his favourite aunt & uncle in East London. So what do you do with a young man when he visits you??  You travel on your bike and show him the area as he is not familiar with the Eastern Cape. (His parents are staying in Centurion).

All the photo's was taking by him during the ride etc, so all complements must go to him. . . .

DAY 1
We decided to go to Kei Mouth Saturday (29 Jan 2011).  A friend of mine said he would join us, but once we are there, he wants to go home again.

The idea was to take the "service road" towards Macleantown, but what we didn't know . . . is yet to come.

Had to turn around later as the water was getting deeper and there was no way around the water / mud  :o

Open roads towards Macleantown

After a Coke, we head back home.

DAY 2

This looks like a moewiese trip with day this and day that, but Johan took nearly 500 photo's and to choose them is a mission on it's own.  Only limited time and look what the time is allready.

Let me carry on with the RR.  Mr P; Kally and a friend of mine, David who's not a WD, joined us the Sunday as the plans were to go to Hogsback via Stutterheim.

The phot's will speak for themself . . . .

The plans were to go to Thornpark Trading Store via the backroads, onto the N6 towards Macleantown, turn left on the road to Hanover, Frankfurt and then to Stutterheim.  From Stutt, to Hogsback via Keiskammahoek towards Cathcart and then back home.

Thanks Glen.

I would do it with a pleasure, BUT I'm riding on "gut feeling" and a map or 2 I study beforehand if I'm going to an area I don't know that well.

I'll post the routes later but it would be like turn left at the second tree, right at the gate etc.

Ha ha - I doubt, but to let you not in the dark, here are a few photo's Milly & I took when we were there last year in June.  It is behind the Manderson Hotel and for any bookings you can call Rob Scott @ 072 364 8077. The place is called "Shire Eco Lodge".

Jmol, I  am so very happy to see you out there again. Awesome trip you did, recognized many roads, having done a fair amount of them after Christmas.
Best regards to David, really happy he is not doing solo too much, and hope to see you all soon.

I'm not sure what report I was reading that had this report linked, it is clear to me I stumbled onto a gem of a ride report.

This is one of few reports I've read, and there's been hundreds, that reminds me of areas where I live.

Up around the dam you visited appears to be alpine wilderness.

This report reinforced my dreams of riding your incredibly beautiful country.

JMOL, I think it's time you write another  :deal: :thumleft:

Damn Mericans,   I saw the rr and started reading just to see later that this report was done donkey years ago.  I almost k@kked my friend out for riding in my back yard without inviting me.    :lol8: :lol8:

But yes, we do have excellent riding opportunities / spots starting a mere 3km from home.   :deal:

Forgive me, I really enjoyed the RR and felt compelled to let old Jmol know he needs to get his ass in gear and write another  :pot:

Yeah, the riding and camaraderie among you South Africans has me quite impressed.

You wouldn't believe the crazy thoughts I've percolating in my membrain.

I'd like to move to ZA for 6 months, see if I like it.  If I fall in love with the place, which I think I will, if and only if there are like minded riders available often to do more group rides, I would then come back to my country and begin making arrangements for a permanent move there.

I've toured all but a handful of states in my country and provinces in Canada, unfortunately solo as most riders want to be pavement princesses dressed to the nines in HD clothing.  I feel as if it's time to branch out and see what's happening on the other side of the world with people who still get it......off-road riding is simply the best and most pure form of riding for me and I have this burning desire to do more of it, just not alone all the time.

No need asking for any forgiveness, I was only joking.  :thumleft:

But yes, this is one unique country where you can live life to the fullest on a scooter.     The wife and I have been exploring hundreds of thousand of kilometers in this country and we did not even scrape the surface, so much more to explore.

Whatever you decide and if you do reach our shores, you are most welcome to cabin at our place.  We will take you places that will be embedded in your membrane forever.       The ball is in your hands.
