Title: Mantshwabise 1000 Desert Race - Botswana 22-24 June
Post by: Motties on March 15, 2011, 10:15:08 am
Here's an opportunity for all wannabe (and established) Desert Racers - it is going to be awesome!!

Who's in?

-----------More Info-----------------------------------------

Press release
In 1975 The Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa – Gauteng Branch (FWDCSA) held the first Trans Kalahari Road race in the Vryburg area, then in 1980 the race moved to Botswana and the Toyota Desert Race was born. The first bikes competed in the event in 1986; with quads joining a few years later and for most of the time Bikes and Quads have been an integral part of the annual Toyota Desert 1000 Race (TDR), which is part of the ABSA Off Road series.
Now on the 25th anniversary of their inclusion in the TDR, the FWDCSA is pleased to announce that a new event has been added to the Southern Africa Off Road Bike and Quad calendar ….. The Mantshwabise 1000.
This marathon race (named after the village which the race used for many years as an overnight stop) brings with it all the history and the legacy of the past but in a new "stand alone" event for bikes and quads which will soon rival similar events such as the Roof of Africa and the Baja.
Taking place on June 23rd and 24th 2011(before the TDR) the competitors will use a 1000 kilometer route, beginning and ending at Race Headquarters / DSP located in the village of Kumakwane. The DSP is a fully fenced, secure 85 000 square meter "Dakar Style" encampment north of Kumakwane, 25kms west of Gaborone, with dedicated pit areas, wash bays, full bar & catering, all amenities, medical facilities and spectator grand stands.
After documentation on the 22nd, competitors will race 2 loops of a 250km route; challenging the skills, tenacity and endurance of both rider and machine; then if that is not tough enough, riders will complete the event by doing two laps of a different 250 km route the next day!
Across the 500kms of route there are many spectator points and the support of the local population in Botswana is legendary.
The event will also form Rounds 4 and 5 of the Southern Africa Off Road Challenge (SORC) for riders from Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Zambia, but will not be part of any South African National or Regional championship.
Classes are in line with the SORC championship and based simply on engine size as well as the applicable MSA and FIM technical requirements.
- Bikes Class A – 2 stroke below 250cc or 4 stroke below 400cc
- Bikes Class B – all other bikes
- Quads Class C – Below 450cc
- Quads Class D – Above 450cc
Within each Class there will be, in support of the Women in Motorsport organisation, a ladies category.
Minimum age for entry is 16 as at June 1st 2011, but only riders over the age 18 at the same date will be allowed to ride the full 500kms each day; younger riders will only do one lap of the 250km route each day.
In order to compete, riders will have to comply with the following:
- Be holders of a valid and recognised National, Regional or Club competition licience for any form of Bike or Quad racing.
- Have competed in at least 2 races in the 12 months prior to June 1st 2011.
- Be in possession of sufficient medical insurance valid for competitive motorsport in Botswana.
- Be physically fit and with a MSA medical clearance if applicable.
Over the years, the challenge of riding and surviving the 1000kms through the Botswana bush has drawn many riders and those who have had the skill, spirit, courage and determination proudly display their finisher’s medals and trophies. Stories abound of the race amongst those who have risen to this challenge and completed the race.
Prize money of at least R20 000 (number of entries will determine final prize value) plus trophies, team awards and medals await those riders who have the "right stuff" to tackle this event with entries opening on May 16th 2011. Numbers will be restricted to 200 entrants in total and the entry fee will be R1200.00 (incl VAT) per rider.
The race is being organized by the team from the FWDCSA with all its’ more than 30 years’ experience of managing the TDR and promises to be a world class event. The competitors will be supported by a race structure second to none – 50 government officials, 350 policemen and
women, over 50 Marshals, 12 para-medics, 2 off-road ambulances and 2 road ambulances, a medical helicopter, all of which are managed via full coverage of the route via two radio networks.
Fuel will be transported by the race organisers to the two refuel points which will be manned by teams from the ATV Club in Pretoria who have fulfilled this role for many years.
Nearby camping and host of other accommodation options in Gaborone are available to entrants and the organisers have agreements in place to smooth the crossing of the border at designated border posts.
Further information to follow.

I like the way you think. I'm gonna mark this one down in my 2012 diary. I've already booked and paid for the June/July school holidays in the Transkei so the cashflow is urhmmmm... not flowing at the moment. And we won't even mention the leave issue  ::).
Maybe we can get a few dogs together and go up in  a group? Dux can be our mackie and hopefully Domstes will have his KDX by then  :pot:

I wish. I made the mistake of riding one. Man it is BRILLIANT. But I am not sure I will do it justice.
I might get a KDX and just try the water for a bit. I did a bit of motoX as a kid on a borrowed bike and I know how fit you need to be.
I am NOWHERE near fit enough.

I want to do this, but logistics is a little problem........,

1.do I ship my quad for the race, do the race and ship it back, that amount to a lot of $$$$moola.
2. can I rent a race ready quad in SA?
3. getting to the race, don't have car in SA need to rent 1 $$$$
4. support for me in the sense of refueling, mechanics etc

I received an email from the organisers with the following comments :

You will need a letter of release from UAE federation proving that you have competed there and are not “black listed” for any transgressions within the sport.
·         The event itself is part of a FIM Africa event, and you may take out a FIM Africa licence at the cost of US$10.00 for the event/alternatively MSA may require you to take out an MSA licence.
·         Medical cover is a major concern, MSA will need proof that you have sufficient medical cover.

All the points on the email is covered but the bike is the biggest hurdle at this stage.....So maybe I should just let this 1 slip until next year  >:( when we can come down as a group with maybe 2-5 bikes and quads....?

Are we running the same route? Just not starting at Game city?

I have done a national and a regional(this race more or less)  and the route differed somewhat.

Easiest cheapest for you is get a MSA regional Lisense and their medical cover.
Buy a secondhand race quad in SA I would say. And sell again afterwards.

Smaller sized DS bikes could yes. BUT they will take a beating. The thorn bushes and trees take no prisioners. It won't be easy thou as the whoops in some sections needs some speed and throttle. I don't think IT WILL BE EASY ON A BIG BIKE, but Albert did it on his KTM 660R so it is possible.

Three years ago there were two Dakar ready bikes that entered as training for poss Dakar. After about 30 or so Kms we asked (told) them to get off the race track. They just could not cope with that sand, mud, bush etc and kept falling, they were keeping back our sweep vehicle at a serious rate.

Yip, I will be up there marking the route followed by marshalling it and thereafter will demark it, should take almost two weeks as the bikes will not be riding on the same days as the cars which makes the race almost twice as long.

"Are we running the same route? Just not starting at Game city?"

Game City has become too built up for the race and as such the pits, start and poss finish now takes place at Kumakwane.

Mick, I would half the cost with you but this is a serious race and fitness must be top notch, I think we should get our ducks in a row for next year, after I have done the Desert challenge, maybe we could get a bunch of guys going down as a team.

Tau, will look into that option of buying a quad in SA and do the race.

Hi guys...please talk some sense into my head before I start planning something silly.

I've always wanted to do the Toyota 1000, but have never gotten around to doing soemthing even close to it.

Is this scenario do-able?: Ride up to the race unsupported from Joburg, do the race (just finish, not compete), ride back. How would a DRZ400E do on the terrain there?

Kind of a mini-dakar?

Loopsoosstroop.

I will never piss on anybody's dream or goals so lets get the facts and plans sorted, and be realistic.

Have you ever done a fun enduro or race?
Have you ever done 200 km in one day?

If yes then you can do it no problem. Get fit and train and get yourself ready for a body bashing. You won't be able ride the bike there and do the race and ride back. You will need support crew to do refuels and carry spares for servicing bike after day 1.

If you have never done any racing before the 1000 will knock you down, and unless you are very fit and mentally strong I do not C a complete Noob doing the 1000.Not impossible but very difficult.

If I was you I would race prep my bike and do 1 oe 2 of the EWXC or WFO's or something they are 1/4 or less of the didtance and good training and race "learning" events.

The Botswana is amazing, but it is hard and long. Have you ever done 500km gravel in one day? Well this is 500km of tweespoor and singletrack lined with trees and in thick sand.

The DRZ400 will do it. Just remove the lights and fit some racing rubber, handgaurds and service her and she will do the race easy. After day 1 change oil clean air filter. and go hard again day 2.

It is possible, BUT please don't go unfit and not race ready otherwise you will get injured or quit and it won't be lekker it is a hard race on the body from all the whoops and jumps and bumps.

Thanks tau for your response! Pretty much what I expected.... not planning to do it this year, dont worry!  ;D

I've managed to get hold of a KDX to start training on, plan is to do a few races first this year and first half of next and then maybe be ready for it next year (wife not going to be happy!)

I've done 800 km mixed days and one or two 500 km gravel days, but that was nice karoo dirt, not tweespoor and sand. I appreciate that it will be a entirely different ball game.

The fitness and stamina challenges is what draws me, it doesn't chase me away...

Isnt the offroads series better prep for the Toyota 1000 than EWXC and WFO? Those are enduros?

Cool loopsoosstroop that sounds like a plan. Even thou the Enduro's is not the same they are very tough on the body and mind so they are better training to get the body used to a hard day in the seat. I have done 3 hr enduro's that left me worse for wear than a National offroad.

Makes sense.... and I suppose the less time spent at high speed the better ne! Must say the Enduros intimidate me much more than the offroads.

The Inxon series (about 200km per race) is a nice and easy way to get into racing and although not nearly as hard as a day at the 1000, it still allows you to test your equipment, skill, fitness etc at a low cost and not too much drama, especially if you are in Gauteng.

You only need a club license (R350) and race entry is R500. All venues around JHB.

I have not done a marathon event like this, but make sure I ride every weekend (De Wildt/ Wild West and so on) and try to spend around 5-6 hours on the bike, (closer to the race we will up the saddle time to 8 hours), do as many off road races and harescrambles as possible and spend a lot of time on the MTB. Hopefully that will be enough to give me a finish.  My riding buddies have done this 3 times and reckon it is the best race on the calendar.

I would be a little reluctant doing the race with a DRZ, I think it will get heavy.

Still 3 months away (well almost), I reckon go for it!!

DRZ only 20kg more than a KDX, 10kg more than a 450 4-stroke. Not that bad?

Haha, no I'll wait for next year. Havn't riden hard for a while, my arms will be pumped in 10 minutes at the moment...

But thanks for the advice, will def look into the Inxon series. Where can I get a schedule or more info?

What would the ideal bike be to do this race with? Considering I am not a new generation high performance 4 stroke fan, more of a old school 2 stroke fan.  ;D

Will a two stroke survive 500km a day? I assume flat out all day?

A 2 stroke can do it all depends on your riding style and prep before and during the race. Top 125 riders change piston and rings after day 1.

I would say a 250 -300 is your best bet and it will last the entire race with a oil change after day one and clean filter at DSP and at servive after day one. The biggest problem is the airfilters get so dirty they start forcing dirt into the intake and then damage to the rings occur.

Insure the jetting is correct and the 2 stroke will run all day long. I like 4 strokes and even they need new airfilters every 250km and oil change after day 1 will keep the clutch in working order.

My parents is leaving for a Reunion in Walvisbay at their old school. Why does this effect me??? I have to be at work and be in charge whilst my dad is away. Also have to look after the farm.

I cannot get to difficult about it as it is my work and secondly I will be taking of so much later this year with Dakar.

I have even orginised other riders to go up with me in April already etc.

I am gonna miss this great race expect more Top SA riders as the Britz race was moved to Rustenburg/Sun City and now that has also been post poned till later this year.

I don't think so, but will check. I rode the route on my 1200 before the race. Took me two and a half days and five days to recover so I spent alot of the race days lying in the shade with lots of beer. :imaposer:

Tomorrow morning at 07h00 we are leaving fo Gaborone, I am really excited about this one - but also sh1tting myself a little. Day 1 is going to be a loooong day in the saddle, 500km of racing (more riding in my case) in the thick sand.

Think I will take it easy for the first loop (250km), make few mistakes and avoid a time bar, then pick up the pace for loop 2 and see how that goes.

Day 2 is shorter at 250km's - so I guess if you can finish the first day without braking bike or body - then things should be cool. I only want that finisher's badge.

Very much after the fact...check out MSA for times.
Also, they cover not only the bikes...sometimes to little...but the 2 wheelers is so damn fast, they're gone before the camera man pulls his focus.

Hoofseun is through the first day  :thumleft:  and says it was a loooong day. Ran outta fuel at 3km before one of the fuel stops. Had to push the bike. Phew that must have been tiring.

Today is one loop of 250km. Bikes do 750 not 1000. Vasbyt ... you are almost there.

Unfortunately do not have any feedback on any of the other riders - sorry  ???

Howzit Guys,

Vey happy to say that I have finished the race!! My number was C100 but changed to C10 as there was another rider with a No 100. Had a very good first day and I felt very strong after the 500km on day one. My battery went pap after about 50km's on day two and I battled mentally and physically to the end (glad the second day was only 250, another 500km day would have had me really struggling)

I will do a more detailed report, but recapping quickly:

Day 1 - Mostly sand some soft some fairly hard packed, some tight sections through the thorn trees

Start 250km loop at 07h10
Finish loop 1 at 11h43

Started loop 2 at 11h58
Finished at about 16h30

Day 2 - A lot of sand again, some scenic river crossings and then some bushveld riding and some rocky sections that almost reminded one of the more open areas at De Wildt.

Technically the race was not really difficult, just long and fast and required full concentration for two long days.

Started at about 07h20 and finished about 12h50 after getting lost and wasting about 30 minutes.

I think there were about 50 entries (incl a few quads) with 15 bike finishers, I finished14th.

My (moving) average speed for the two days was 55km/hr

Hoofseun flew past me on day 2 shortly after the start, that guy has got some great riding style. :thumleft:

I will post some pics.

Will definitely do it again next year, was one of the best races I have ever done. Will hopefully be fitter then.

Hi Puddles

Thanxs for all the support from this side, I missed you in the pits, next time.

Hi Darksider, it was great meeting you guys last week.

This is an event that should be on a persons "bucket list".  It was a great event.  We had three bikes entered and all three finished.  Two of these bikes were prepared for the Australasian Rally later this year and this was their test run.  Brett did very well on the one bike and Glen pushed through right to the end.

The terrain were very varied and marking these long loops took some efforts from the organisers and caused us some challenges at points, but it is all part of the race and the experience.  Day one was restarted with some riders from fuel point 1 and others at a marshall point and others elsewhere.  Three of us got restarted next to the road and two of us had issues with restart order and race times for day 1.

Passing people along the route was also interesting with the long sand lanes and branches waiting to hit you on the wrist, nose, shoulders and anywhere else and even when you are not passing it still gets you.  Doing speed on the middle mannetjie is quite interesting with some corners coming fast and hectic, if you miss then it is "wag-n-bietjie".  I love my mooses.

Day 2 was a good ride, with three of us having a race from the last fuel stop to DSP (44km).  If you miss a corener, someone else leads and so the lead passes all the way, some stages you have open vision and then it is dust till your turn comes to capitalise on a mistake.  We made it home safely.

Lets see what next year brings!

Those BMW's looked the part and worked the part.  Mine looked so empty next to these!

Did you do that section next to the river (Day 2) taking us along the "river bank".  Got me swimming!  Luckily the the bike remained on the bank upside down!

I marked the prologue and blue loop, as well as parts of the green loop (river section near DSP). Then I went up to Fuel 2 on the blue loop and marshalled there (M3).
