Title: Will the REAL XR riders step up --------------
Post by: blazes on March 17, 2011, 09:30:19 am
Just wondering who are the REAL XR 650R riders are --in other provinces --- and who still own one till today and who just do not talk about how grand they are --but alas have sold them and moved on --Lets say the Real DIE HARDS--- ::)

I only know of a hand full --So let me name the one's i know--

Redrider as he rides everywhere with his --Town and Country --

Runner --he uses it for trips to put ears on the 690KTM's

Beserker --he has no option - he needs it for the thick sand

Brakenjan -- mmm because he has the bucks  :peepwall:

Wostersous -- maybe he can fill me in on what he uses his for --

Any other's out there --who still own one ????????????

Hey Guys,
Yes i have an XR650R , and i love it to bits, i use it daily for commuting to work & on the weekends to play with. I bought it from Pistonclap ( Chris ), i have been doing a little work on it to get it as close as possible back to standard. No happy button, & i am a bit of a "Ballie" but i enjoy its performance, enjoy the ride to & from work each day. Based in Brackenfell.

I know Tim from TMC in Cape Town CBD rides XR650s, he has both an L and an R, and is a HUGE lurker on this forum. Not sure if that counts though?

Guys, we all know where this thread is heading: all the Zaar guys will put their hands up, only to be followed by a schpiel from Blazes on why a Husky is a better bike. So please spare us the suspense and just gooi the usual Husky drivel Blazes. Or perhaps take a refreshing approach and let us Zaar lovers be? If we all say that we like Huskies, will that make you leave us alone?

Have not been riding much the last 8-10 months while training for ironman, which I'm continiously getting kak for from Stroke Her :-).
I use the Xaar for pretty much any riding except the enduro type play/ride which I use the CR250 for. I've probably got one of the higher mileage units but it does not influence the performance or girth of my grin when riding rocks, sand, jeeptrack, single track etc, tar makes the smile a bit smaller. Love the simplicity (spelling) and don't mind the kickstart at all! I will unfortunately be looking at a multi cylinder bike in the near future but cannot justify owning 3 bikes, the Xaar would sadly be passed own to the next "wise man".......

The XR is the king of Baja for a reason - it's straight-off-the-throttle torque is something to behold (at least, on a properly tuned one). There are days I regret not buying one - until I start my bike (with a button), or shift into 6th ;)

The XR will beat the KTM Rallye on torque and weight

The KTM Rallye will only beat the TE because of it's suspension and it's power (if it truly is Rally tuned)

The DRZ 400 is actually a lekker little bike - it's lightning quick and light, it'll beat the XChallenge because it's sprung better (unless the XChallenge has a spring shock on the rear)

The XChallenge doesn't have the fairing of the KTM 640 to content with, BUT the 640 might beat it on suspension

Just my opinion, I could be horribly wrong. Come on, what's YOUR prediction?

The XR was the king of the Baja but it no longer is. The kick start and the outdated suspension will let it down.
The KTM Rallye is a beautiful thing but it is big and heavy.
The terrain on this particular ride is a bit to open for the DRZ 400, if it were tighter and more technical it would be there and thereabouts.
The X-Challenge is underpowered and heavy and has question marks about its rear shock.
The 640 Adventure rider will have to stop every 5 minutes to get the feeling back in his hands.
So whats left?

In my limited/outdated experience with off road racing, the bike is far less important than the rider, so I would say it all depends who is riding those various bikes.  Put a good rider who is a lot better than the rest on any of those bikes and the others will battle to keep up, as long is its not just perfectly flat long straight sand roads!

Also different people do well on different bikes, a very aggressive rider will want something that rips the ground apart at all times, that may not make him the fastest over any course, but, thats the way he will want to ride, so he'll choose and like that type of bike - others may favour handling and smoothness so a fire breathing bucking bronco monster is just going to slow them down etc.

So endless arguments about which bike has more power etc, are really pointless in most off road racing contexts, unless the bike is an absolute dog.  Its the bike that YOU find easiest to ride fast, and which is also reliable, which is going to win you races or get you the best positions in most cases.

I've had 2 XR's before the one I have now:
  1981 XR 500
  1985 XR 600
  1985 XR 600 (current)

I don't have the bucks that most of the guys on this forum have, so I need to sell my current bike when upgrading.
The next one will be another XR, but with rear disks, and the one after that will be the mighty 650R. Can't wait!!

DRZ will smoke XR650R on most surfaces, except very fast flat, due to weight advantage.

Will the REAL XR riders step up --------------
As you know, I'm an XR guy at heart and wouldn't mind owning a 650.

I was looking for a 525 and 650 at the same time.. found the 525.

Sooooo ...there is 40..Blazes wants to know who..    :deal:

--could be a good indication as to how they have stood the test of time --

If you look at the interest that a 650R that is for sale generates, how much people still compare a bike that hasn't really changed since 2000 to new hardware...it is standing the test of time, standing the test of reliability.. :deal:

How do you know someone owns a XR

They tell you!!  :pot:

You get roosted?

DRZ will smoke XR650R on most surfaces, except very fast flat, due to weight advantage.

I can see what happened here..no Yamaha, so you stuck your hand into the hat, (and like the Lotto), viola!, came up with  ???  ???  something that alas, would blow if ridden like an XR (the kicker, ask Stroke Her)

2StrokeDan, the Yamaha man!!! Dave, I refrained from commenting on that spesific post. Silence is golden.

But Dan, don't worry, I came to work this morning on my '90 Yammie DT180. And it is still going lekker! I thought this morning that I must ride it more often!

Ok --so a common thread is starting here and as for the ones that are not the real thing and wish they were --go and hijack another thread --or go and --Jack off.

Point 1-- About the only serious racer that could be converted in to a good DS Bike -- ;

2. a whole lot are still riding and being used daily

3. some are just for show --small percentage --

4. Spares -- a biggie are still available  ;)

5. Low cost on maintaining

6. Power to weight ratio --very good

7. Add what you think should be added------

We are doing a mini Baja this weekend Lutzville to Hondeklipbaai and back and I will let you know which bike comes out on top. I already have a good idea but will keep it to myself for now.

X-Challange
XR650R
KTM 690 Rally (ex Dakar bike)
KTM 640 Adventure
Suzuki DRZ 400E
Husky 610 TE

So how did the mini Baja go?
