Yep, thanks to all those involved in organising the bash but especially Pete and the two sweepers (AntonW & Robin Brown) who patiently nursed us through the sand with our pillions. Just clocked in at home. I'm knackered, went to bed at 3am at got woken at 4am by those phillistines from the eastern cape departing home  ;) Travel safe okes.

I need a weekend away!!!!

Hey everyone  – awesome Bash!

It will be nothing without the participants, thank for a great event.  I think the routes were great – luckily not too much sand   :o , but offering a bit of everything the Karoo has to offer.

Remember the photo competition – I still have a Kriega R15 rucksack and bladder to give away…

Title: Re: WC Bash - Ride Report
Post by: Rynet on March 28, 2011, 02:13:14 pm
Wow where do I start.  What a great Bash , this is my 3rd WC Bash ( if we can count last year's one) and it was by far the best. The one 2 years ago I met most of you for the first time and this time I knew a lot more guys. The people are what makes the Bash, that and the awesome riding , and on both counts this was a roaring success  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

Thanks Pete for organising , Leftlesss for the route, and Leftless , Andy660 , Bradleys, Crossed -Up , Anton W,  for the recce, and for all the hard work behind the scenes, it was a lekker route  ;)

My day started at 2.30 when I had to go to hospital and sit with a friend who had a car accident 2 weeks ago. He is from England so had no friends here. I sat with him while his heart rate went down , till it got to zero , and after he died at 4.30 I decided I wanted to just forget about the misery and come to the Bash anyway.

I left Cape Town at just before 6 am , and arrived at the Bash at just after 9 am , just in time to catch Berm Rooster and his troops leaving for the Loop . I just had time to unsaddle , kiss Fourie -Koppie , had "Jimi Hendrik" Stoetie petrol me up and off we went . What a great day riding  :thumleft:

Bermy decided that because we left so late we would do the route in reverse so as to catch everyone at Middelpos for lunch .  I think we rode a tad too fast over those dongas in the beginning , because the first really big hole , my tank bag ripped right off,  then a second one ripped my screen off my bike , Groen Mamba's footpeg ripped off , Jack's exhaust ripped off and just as I said the Honda is still unscathed , Eugene's forks?  nearly came undone , but he bolted them back. At some point we realised we had to ride a tad slower , hahaha I think that was near the end, but then that hectic sand started so we had to give it horns  :laughing4: . Bermy was a great koshuisvader, he would roost us royally then speed away off into the distance and then come back every now and again and herd us together again. :thumleft:  They were such a greal little group to ride with . A great great great ride. Man Leftless you are THE MAN .  The lekker routes you come up with  :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

The evening sunset cruise was spectacular,  and the braai goofing around with Baas Heimer , Freaky and Jacko lots of fun . Seeing ( and touching ) Jacko's safari suit was a highlite  ;D and actually there were so many people to chat to and so little time, it was all just too much fun . Glad eveyone is back home safe , and really hope that Charl gets better soon .

Just spoke to Charlie's wife in the hospital in Worcester. He is in ICU. Broken femur, but his bone marrow went into his bloodstream and now forming a blockkage in the lungs. They are trying to stabilize his breathing. Will keep you updates, but let us be positive.

This was what I was afraid of ,hope he does well, please keep me informed as to his recovery.Glad that shot I gave him took away some of his discomfort

ah, some amazing shots....Jacko manages to make even a bloody safaripakkie elegant....everyone looks extremely sober...amazed that you got so many out of the tent and onto a hill to wait for the sunset...that would never happen at the FS bash....so few woman? and can we have some shots of the food?
lovely terrain to ride ...thank you for sharing this.

 :3some:
Sand glorious sand

SAND.
What sand? This was the clever answer from the entrepid recce group led by Leftless, when we arrived back in one piece and remarked how hard we had worked to stay aboard our bikes.
And backing up the statement Henk and Faan our hosts at Stonehenge simply say, that if one survives the small patch of sand just outside the camp then the rest is merely a walk in the park.
The flippant remarks remind one of a sailor who never gets seasick explaining to a raw beginner that the waves are very small and should not upset any stomach .
But apart from the threat of sand and more than most were prepared for the gathering was excellent, the riding and the scenery stunning and the route excellent in any world standard.
Piston Pete had done his homework excellently , squeezed prizes out of many enterprises, Henk and Faan performed at their best and the recce crew who had ridden the routes many times including a day run of close to 900 km had chosen a venue, which could easily challenge if not better some of the best offroad routes in the world.
I met up with a small group at the Engen One stop at about 10am Friday morning and rode through to Ceres for a pit stop and quick fill up before heading up the Gydo Pass to Op Die Berg.
We had along with many other riders decided to go up and over Katbakkies and I wanted to show Donovan the new boy at KTM our great passes.
Katbakkie over we descended onto the R355 and headed to Stonehenge.
And we all made it through the small patch of sand just before the camp, but alas one BMW rider had spun off and was eating sand.
Slowly as the afternoon progressed we met old friends and the camp filled up ready for the Friday night gathering braai and much needed refreshments.
Piston Pete welcomed all and Leftless led us through the route pointing out the technical spots plus the damage to the base of Gannaga Pass and where to take care.
Saturday morning saw the first group take off at about 8.30am followed by our group where Anton and myself were prepared to help out if needed as two of the riders had pillions on board.
And true to fact the first sand patch took its toll with one rider in our group losing it but not seriously.
Then it was back onto the hard with Anton remarking that we had another small patch of sand to negotiate and then it would be a walk in the park.
Well most will never believe him again as we hit a large long stretch of loose sand and to make life that bit harder a left had corner.
Fortunately all our party survived with some paddling and the pillions walking.
After relaxing up on the hard where the well preserved steam tractor and wagon feature and with all getting their breaths back we again hit the gravel and apart from the odd sand patch just placed to catch the unwary we headed out to the base of Ouberg Pass.
Ouberg is something else when it comes to awe inspiring scenery and the pass is a riders dream as it winds its way up to the view point.
Once on top and looking back over the Tankwa and out to the Cederberg mountains one can see why it is called “Big Sky Country”
We left Ouberg and headed across the plateau towards Middlepos our lunch stop but without a bit of drama.
Sand took its toll and one of the riders and pillion took a tumble with the pillion suffering an injured foot.
Middlepos was reached about 2pm and just in time to see the Boerbull dogs, which are bred in the area go through their paces while we all slaked our thirsts and enjoyed well deserved boerewors rolls.
The following ride through to Gannaga pass went without incident and then we over the top and heading down to the badly eroded section.
Here I had been warned about the ruts and drop offs but in true fashion had only listened with half an ear.
At one section I found myself flying over a drop off, the Mitas tyres gripping like the proverbial to a blanket and I am sure I pulled off and Marc Coma move.
But thanks to the sure footedness of my bike we came out smiling.
Then it was onto sand patched all the way back to Stonehenge with one fall  of one of my fellow riders that looked like an elephant blowing dust all over its back.
Fortunately the fall was slow and not harm done.
We arrived back in camp victorious. We had ridden the route in fine style in one of the best offroad riding areas in the Cape.
Later as the sun began to settle and the groups were again refreshed Henk invited us to put on a tie, grab a drink and climb aboard his Landcruiser.
We headed out and up onto a small hill where we must have witnessed one off the finest sunsets. It would take the breath away from the most travelled person.
Back at camp braaing began and then the lucky names were called. Thanks to hard work Piston Pete pulled out a myriad of prizes and many riders went off with a smile on their faces.
Sunday morning dawned clear and bright and most of us hit the R355 headed back to the rat race once again.
I am sure that the majority of participants would agree with me that this was among one of the best weekends and gatherings they have attended in a long time.
May we enjoy many more!
A small video of the days  riding

Things I have learned this last weekend:

- Changing tubes are not as fun as people say.
- A good hangover last about 2 days.
- Boetie kan alles doen...
- If a Wilddog says there is no sand on your route don't believe him...
- If a Wilddog says we have done all the sand bits don't believe him.
- If a Wilddog tells you to look out for washaways at the bottom of the pass believe him!
- A KTM gives you a grin.
- A Vito's doors do not open after 2 in the morning.
- I get excitable seeing a man in a safari suit.
- ATGATT means flip flops.
- BMX's don't wheelie as good as KTM's.
- And lastly when your wife tells you to rather leave something at home because you are going to lose it listen.

Two punctures before wellington, four more flats before I even left wellington. Nothing left of my tubes, and no chance of getting home.Eventually I sat on the side of the road and just gave up.

At that point a complete stranger came up to me and offered to put my bike on a trailer and take it from Wellington to Milnerton.

A huge thank you to Reggie and Hans, the swiss Triumph crazy dude, who towed me back home. I didnt think that people like that still exist.Wow.What a guy.

Abel & myself had a quick brunch in Ceres on Friday. Where the road splits between the Eselbank and Katbakkies routes we had to decide.....and the more conservative option won.
So Katbakkies it would be:

That meant we had lots of time on our hands, so we stopped and waited for more dogs to arrive. Just to get some pics.
So we waited.
And waited.
No such luck.

After 40 minutes in the blazing sun we decided to carry on.

We stopped at the R355 and Bradleys, Pistonpete and N[]va pitched up with the bakkie (and ice cold beer).

From there it was plain sailing to the bash site, we turned out to be early arrivals and got a good headstart on the refreshments. Was good to meet old and new friends.

Geesh man, and i thought everything was sorted before Wellington, pressure was stable etc.
You need to check the inside of your tyre, I am sure you WILL find something!
Ja,at this stage I think that trac mac can check out the tyre and fit an enduro tube.I am going to count patches tomorrow, just for fun.

Jeez boet.... I really feel like a right old drol.... Seriously thought you were fixed and sorted and I just 'gooi-ed' it home..... And when you did phone me I was on the bike and only noticed the missed call when I came out of my babelas induced slumber that evening....

Sorry again, but Mohammed is going to k@k bricks this week.

damn! we really though that was the last of your punctures with lekker smooth tar all the way home.

I had it made up in CT. Its not polcarbonate...only perspex so it might not be as strong. It's difficult to judge the performance of it right now as i trailered the bike up & only installed the screen the day before. From what i can feel on the outride its good but a true test will be on a highway to check the dynamics. Its ever so slightly wider as you go up & about an inch higher with that lip. My design...i still want to do another with the screen kicking forward a bit just above the headlight.
I have not looked at a retail price yet because its still under development.

What can I say. Another lekker BASH, organised by a super team.  :thumleft:

My ride started from PE, on Thursday morn, at sparrows poep, with the 1150 “Donkeysaurus” I travelled down to Mosselbay then on to Somerset West, where I slept over. Early Friday I pulled into Donford BMW and acquired a real lekker riding pants before meeting up with Stoetbull at his pad in Paarl. We then chucked to meet the other guys outside Wellington, arriving on time with  No-one in sight. So we went down the road, and brushed our teeth at a local water hole, where KLR joined us. Teeth freshly polished, we went back to the main road outside Wellington and joined JACKO, Hiemer, and a crowd of other, dirt starved honne.
These dawgs decided to route via Oppieberg, and braai other side Katbakkies Pass.  Here we were treated to a PRELUDE of JACKO’s full bash suite. (Half suite - style)
(http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu277/TweetieWD/WD%20WC%20Bash%202011/DSCF3084800x600.jpg) Keep this pic for posterity
Arriving at the site late afternoon, the manne were “goed warm” in this lekker BEDAWIN tent.
MENSE , this bash site is far from no-where, and nog n bietjie verder. Primative is un understatement. But the hosts Henk & Faan really bend over backward for us. Clearly this site is not geared for the 150 souls that tormented the normal tranquility of this place. I suppose normally 40 would be a push. Now you must know.

The very first patch of sand, n klipgooi from the site, was most demoralizing. 20m from the end I decided, that’s it, and went into the veld, cross-coutry style back to the site where AntonW convinced me that this was the worsed, and that the route is very spectacular. So me goes and challenges the sand monster again. We make it through this shit and eventually us back-marker stragglers get on our way. We stopped for a rest at this remnant of years gone by, at Oudebaaskraal.

Then came more of the SAND MONSTER. Now this was real deep stuff. Here is fact that it was serious K*K stuff. This actions was Not done intentionally at all.

From here, it was a lekker ride down to Middlepos, Gas-Up , cool of in the pub and push on back to the site. This is the Gannaga Pass, inside the Tankwa Nat Reserve.

247km outride. The last 40km or so, inside the Tankwa National  Reserve was done on tracks with average 50mm sand on the hard surface.
After an outride like this, you have are definitely more experienced in the sand for a while. (short while)
Sunday saw us leave at Sparrows for PE again, arriving home at 17h30 or so.

Thanks guys, that was great. Those mountain passes were well worth the battle with the Sand Monster.
Will I ever go back there. NO WAY . Been there, done it, got NO bash tee-shirt.
Next year another venue guys. Kambati is looking good.  :thumleft:

Abel & myself headed out of the camp before the rest, hoping to find a good spot to take pics from.
Leftless had described the route to us the previous evening and it was still fresh in Abel's mind.
My mind could not be described as fresh.

So we turn left at the first banner, just after the gate, and tonk along till we find a good spot.

And we wait.
And wait.
Nothing. Don't even hear a bike.

So we decide to carry on. We get to an intersection....mmm.......no banner.

We see faint bike tracks heading left. Not what we expected, but we head that way. At the foot of Ganaga pass, just as I decide to turn around, I see a shiny object in the road. No chance to stop so I keep slightly left of what I have now identified as a snake.
It's a Cobra and he strikes at me but all he gets is a gobfull of Sidi Crossfire.

We turn around and head along the gravel road in the general direction of Ceres. By now I'm very the moer in with myself for leaving my GPS at home. Being a group ride I didn't see the need for it. Anyway, we encounter the backmarkers just where they turn right towards Ouberg pass.

We had done an extra 90km due to the first flag not being meant to be the first flag  ??? and were hanging around with the tail-enders but luckily there were still some boerie-rolls left in Middelpos.
It was a busy day in the main street with a dog show and lots of bike traffic.

The backup trailer's leaf springs had come adrift from their sliders due to all the bouncing. We wanted to load Taboo's GS 650 on it, she had hurt her shoulder when she came off on some shale.

So some roadside repairs were done in the main street:

Some distance beyond Ganaga Pass (near where I had the Cobra encounter) we came across a forlorn GSA 1150 on it's centrestand. Nobody in sight. Couple of indicators and tail light lens missing but no other reason why it would be standing there.
We weren't sure it was that of a WD until ChrisL and his buddies arrived and could identify it.
We decided to load it on the trailer and that is when it was realized that the rear suspension was stuffed.

Unlike the shot Stoetie got on Friday   :peepwall:
why did Stoetie get shot for ? Alcohol poisoning ?  ;)
Further info on Charlie660:
Unfortunately I haven't been around town much this week and could only vissit on Wednesday evening. I could not speak to Charlie, but saw him quickly and talked to his wife. As most of you know, he was taken off the respirator two days ago (I think).  The nurse didn't want to say much, but his wife says he is doing good. They are cutting back on the morphine which is a good sign. She has a place to stay, so that is sorted, but looks tired which we can understand. If you know her, please phone and show support. And remember it's not to late to pray.

So who is familiar with the old postal route via Cobussegat and the Tra-Tra river to Biedouw Valley?

Abel and myself did it once before from the other side about 8 years ago.
Sunday morning we were brave enough to have a go at it. I was at a distinct disadvantage due to Saturday evening's festivities but vowed to not ruin a good trip due to my own stupidity.

The sun was already relentless when we left Stonehenge. Soon we were on the road to Cobus's farm, where we announced ourselves and received the go-ahead. He asked very nicely that we leave every gate like we found it.
About the route he said "Die pad is 'n bietjie sleg hier en daar".

No shit, Sherlock.

From there it was to be sand and various sized rocks for the next 4 hours.
It was tiring and challenging yet very rewarding.

Some parts looked like this:

Often though, it was a lot worse. In a dry riverbed I hit some boulders amongst the sand and fell over to the right; luckily I landed exactly between two large rocks. If you hurt yourself there (or break down) you have a BEEG problem.

Here is one of the scarce open stretches:

We had a limited water supply and my body was dehydrated to start off with.......not a good combo. :deal:
Added to that it was getting hotter as we got closer to the Cedarberg. We took some serious strain but had to push on, no point in hanging around.

The Tra-Tra river:

In the mountain there is another farm one has to go through; the elderly farmer was very friendly and opened the gate for us after a brief chat. The road became a bit easier but there were still lank stretches of sandy tweespoor with protea bushes tugging on the handlebars.

Civilization! The lovely Biedouw valley up ahead:

We stopped at the farmstall at Brandewynriver and floored a couple of cooldrinks each. Slabbed back along the N7 with all the Stop / Go's and arrived home just before sunset.

Great weekend!  :thumleft:

This has been bothering me ever since we went to this godforsaken place. Why dit you host the WC Bash in the Norther Cape? Could you not have found a leKKer place in your own province ?
No wonder so few of the cape owes came to the bash. You did'nt take them out of town, you REALLY took them out of touch  :laughing4:

Furthermore, being 2of2, I discussed the issue, of which bash was the better, with 1of2, and I think the concensus is that both were leKKer, haveing their own character. The FS bash offered both Luxury and "slum-it" options. The WC or is it NC Bash, offered basically slum-it only.
The FS Bash offered more eating and drinking divesity with 2 or 3 places in town and the rally site  etc. WC/NC bach was take it or leave it, but I must admit, Faan & Henk, really did an excellent job to get all the dop and ice to that bush camp.
FS Bash was in civilisation, with a host of out ride options. WC/NC Bash basically had one ride. (Not to say the one offered was not interresting.) One thing for sure, is that the WC/NC BASh had the better prises by far. The other wanna be bash hosts can catch a hint here ;D
FS bash had NO T-shirts or so, WC/NC Bash had that - Great, and funtastic caps with LED head light  :thumleft: LeKKer for braaing etc, at night.
Concencus is that Both BASHES were lekker, having their own character.  :thumleft:

I vote for next year staying at the same place and riding through Wupperthal and back for the route.
Organize fuel at Oasis on the way back.
Is Stonehege in the WC or NC? If its in the NC its by a ballhair's thickness over the borderline. And it is really close to CT.
I really though there would be more WD's.
Anyway we had enough people there from the NC too.

Tweets sorry you didn't like the place. The rest of us loved that place.  :3some: The isolation of it was one of the factors that made it so special. We knew we were going to a primative place, so I phsyced the mind up for the a good sluym week-end, even though I personally am starting to like the "little " comforts of life at my age.  But one things for sure.

Toe ons by Weskus se huis aankom was daar omtrent n ordentlikke verwelkoming deur 1.Weskus "Dewald" 2. Legadema "Bob" 3. Blindside " Jaco" 4. Pieter 5. Whitefish "Willem" en vir Boetie het ons by sy huis loop groet, en dit was ons 8 manne wat die volgende oggend van Vredendal af grondpad om Clanwilliam toe gery het.

Is Stonehege in the WC or NC? If its in the NC its by a ballhair's thickness over the borderline. And it is really close to CT.
I really though there would be more WD's.
Anyway we had enough people there from the NC too.

daar was bokkoms by die bash  ;D

Ja, maar net ek en stoetie het van daai bokkoms ge-proef. Die res van julle...... Ai tog  ::)

Excellent Idea Chris , and we already have a route in mind .I did a piece of it with Crossed-up on the way home , and yes it can include Wupperthal  and Oasis.
There is a weee bit of sand in places   and some water !

Yip...i met with Faan yesterday and expressed interest in using Stonehenge as a base again. He's all smiles :)
I think it's a great idea as there are so many variables for routes.
Fuel at either Oasis or Wupperthal might present a logistical problem but i'm sure we can organise.

It's also up to the guys if they want the Bash at the same venue? I'm also thinking of the guys who come from far and put a lot of effort into getting to the WC Bash....we don't want the EC boys getting bored! ;D
Maybe we can run a poll with some options?

I personally believe that the WC bashes are successful not only because of the organising and games that are held, barrel ,sand,go slow races ect but because of the different and great venues found by the WC crew.Different is always good. :thumleft:
The last bash which due to commitments i could not go looked like a POW camp but the fun and adventure spirit was certainly there as per usual WC bash and I am sorry to have missed an awesome event with old friends that I have met over the past WC bashes.

I realy don't mind on which side of the border Stonehenge and the route is located. Even if it's 2 ballhairs into the northern terretory it'll be fine. The idee of wupperthal sounds like music in my ears. There are realy enough variety in the possible routes to and from to keep that interesting as well.
Ek kry skoon hoedervleis by die gedagte.

While getting dressed Fridaymorning Groenmamba phones me from Riversdale. I forgot my Camelbak at home!!
Where to get one in Rdale?! Dunno says I. As far as I know they only sell "papsakke" in Rdale. Well he got one at
the local "handelshuis" and he waited for me and we rode together all the way to Stonehedge. MissesL was VERY
happy about this as I was on crutches. We took the tar through Garcia turned to Laingsburg and turned off on
the Witteberge road to Konstabel. What a stunning road!!

Witteberge road. Go do this road in the winter. It would be stunning.

The old trainsideing at Konstabel. Its 25 kms from Touwsriver on the N1.

Next the long strait dirtroad to Stonehedge. Ive never been here before but I like the size of their braaifire!!

Early Saturdaymorning. Seven of us decided to take a slightly different route.

Bloukranspas towards Calvinia. Here I mentioned having some coffee in town. It seems I speak a foreign language
because everytime I said coffee I was told beer would be better!!!! :thumleft:
Dammetjies approaching.
