Thanks LITO, and I'm not sorry coming here to have a peek.

Very nice layout guys...well done.
I'm not riding at the moment, but work allowing, I'll probably be
popping into the dealership next Sat. to trade my bike in for a new
KLR

The big question is.....will it be green/black or red/black. Leaning
towards Kwak green. Oh God, I'm getting like LITO now, worrying about which colour to choose.

Go for the GREEN and ride in the ruff, be careful of the bogeys and do not get a hole in one!

i agree.
plus it would stand out amongst the present members red/black version
(havent seen H's one, but i think it is red/black too)

Welcome on board Mango, must be pretty exciting knowing you getting a new bike in a week's time. I promised myself one day I will buy something brand spanking new out of the box even though it might be a Harley :shock:

Yep, previous owner just didn't look after it.....the pistons are now
buggered, and I'm buggered if I'm going to spend anymore money
on this bike.

Are you dead set on the thumper? What about the KLE500?

Too much fairing.  Doesn't have a good
review except if needed for city riding. I like the KLR, and feel
comfortable with this bike. Just had bad luck coz of the previous
owners  :evil:

Welcome Mango

Dare I say that between the current 4 KLR owners on this site (and with the info available on the klr650.net forum), you'll receive the best advice regarding this bike and its maintenence, pros and cons, mods, riding tips, accessories etc in this country 8)   - and I mean it not in a vein way.

When are you getting the bike.  Follow the ride-in instructions - change the oil and filter at 50kms and then again at 500.  Change the doohickey within the 1st year (i'm busy - Shark you too?) importing the tools and a couple of parts.  Ride the bike for 6 months to a year before deciding on mods.

You can however:
- loctite everything
- do the T-mod
- change the fish oil in the front forks with some decient oil - maybe add a bit more or move to 10w
- stay away from synthetic oil for the first 5000 kms
- upgrade the front brake with a braided hose
- install the headlight protector from - i think Ventura - will check
- install better (not higher watt - maybe slightly since the KLR only got about 70w of extra wattage from the alt) headlight globe
- relocate the left mirror  - aftermarket part - in case of fall the controls don't break

Just ask for more info if interested  :D

erm, at the risk of sounding like the idiot I am, what exactly does a doohicky doo? is it the thing on the exhorst that keeps you out of the doodoo? Must be a kwaka thing, my TA doesn't even have widgets.

Green is cool

Doohickey = the balancer lever adjuster - or something like that.  It keeps the chain of the balancer system under tension.  The part itself and/or the spring that tension the lever fails (brakes).  Kawa deny any problem with the part, but nearly all KLR doohickeys or springs are broken when you open up the motor.  Apart from being unable to adjust the balancer - and the therefore vibrations etc - the part itself (or tiny parts of the part  :roll: ) lies somewhere in your sump waiting to be scooped into the working mechanism.

A stronger aftermarket part and spring will quickly sort out the problem pre-emptively - about a 2 hour job for a mac that know his story.

Its important to adjust the balancer system at service intervals, and not too often. There is probably a limited lifetime of adjustment there and then the chain needs to be replaced.
Every 5000 is good, mine still makes a noticeable difference so I can assume the spring and doo are intact.
Ordering parts and tools to do the fix job myself as we speak.
Will assist any JHB based KLRistas with the task aswell, the tools look top quality. I drink wiskey.

how bad is the engine? a piston and rebore should be easy to do on a thumper.

My expertise stop when the engin gets opened up  :oops:   For these kind of question try the www.klr650.net forum - excellent advice.

Beg your pardon for not knowing you're a girl Mango - welcome, to the best of my knowledge you're lady #1  :D

Don't know your physical dimensions, but a lowering kit is available and work well on a KLR.  A photo will help to determine your exact needs in order to give the right advice  :D  :shock:  :lol:  :wink:

Shout if you need advice or help - time permitting me and a couple of regulars (KLR owners) can start publishing and debating our prefered mods.  TIP: The Protaper alu (high) bars I've imported are available for R450 from most Honda outlets (dealer deal with ProTaper).  Damn good bar for about the same price locally as overseas.

Mango, as one who has tried the KLR with both bars, those Pro Tapers are the difference between Pep and Prada to me...... it was that impressive. Wow

actually, we both sitting with the same crap problem...
mangos: ill fitted piston (size i think), has to be resleeved. so she is going for a new one now.

mine: i too had a blowthru with too much play and is being rebored, fitted with a new piston as we speak. not garantueed tho this week, altho it is possible.

but I can say that I'm 5"9 or 1.78 tall, so that shouldn't be a
problem.

The protaper bars I had fitted on my old KLR, but I asked the mech
who is putting my bike back together, to put the stock ones back, so
I can use the protaper on the new bike.....

Hopefully I can sort out the trade-in price on Sat. and get the new bike
a week later......Thanks for the advice on the oil change. Am definately
taking note of all your mods, and will be riding the bike for a while
to see what needs to be changed.....

As for the T-Mod.....can't I just feed the carb tube into the airbox?
Have heard of others doing that, but with different bikes.

Toucan, it has been rebored x5......mech said the job that was done
before was pathetic, so he would have to fit a sleeve...Yes, it would be
cheaper than buying new, but thanks to the previous owner, I have lost
confidence in this bike, and have no idea what else is going to go wrong.

Mango, apparently no - you need a pipe hanging down, but off course then its at risk (water crossings) - hence the T-mod - still have the 'hanging down' pipe but with a 2nd one higher  (under seat).

From where are you buying - try Robert at Suzuki South.  I got the best price by far from him, they're willing to negotiate too.

Thanks for that.  Am not too keen to do business with Kawa CPT,
so will definately give Suzuki South a call tomorrow.  :thumbright:
