Day 1

After much anticipation, and almost having to cancel my holiday due to an impending knee operation, Tuesday 30 August arrives.  It is day 1 of my week long bike trip!!!  I can hardly wait to get on the bike.  But that won’t be today......

My weapon of choice.  Custom Built GS1200, with GSA tank, and sprayed last minute with Rattle Can Matt Black....

The night before.  I am packing all night long.  Lots of stuff goes along on a week long trip, and I only take half of what I set aside to pack.

All this.....

Goes into this!

Pack setup:
Tankbag:  Tools, flysheet, emergency poncho, torch and map.
Backpack:  StealthCamperTent, Sleeping Bag, Ribzz Stretcher, Stove, pots, plates and cutlery.  Clothes and food for about 4 days.  My airhawk seat is my cushion.
Backpack:  Cup, toiletries, One bottle of Brandy (Dis fokken koud innie Karoo, liefie!) and 2L of water.
3 legged camping stool.

Lock and Load.  On my way to Justin.  The new tank feels comfortable and I can handle the weight easily.  Total weight, including 2L of water on my back pack. 20kg.  B0nus!!     Note that I removed my rear seat on the GS.  I always do this to lower the COG.  I strap all the stuff down with Bungy cords which I also use to pull my tent upright.

When I arrive at Justin’s house, we load the trailer, and set off for Bloem.  I didn’t know this, but the 800GS is a full 50mm longer than the 1200GS.  WTF?

Leaner and meaner 800 Lewensgevaarlik

On our way...

We arrive at my mate Ian’s house in Bloem. We will be leaving the trailer and bakkie here.  That night we sleep in his Lapa on the floor.  Well, we tried to sleep anyway.  Everytime I roll over I check on my phone to see if it isn’t time to get up yet.  At 4h30am,  we are up and can hardly wait to get going.

Shot Ian, for the MOERSE steaks.

Distance Covered:  550km
Total covered:  550km.

Day 2

Justin needs a bit of help with his luggage.  He is unsure what to pack and what to leave behind.  I let him put all the things he needs one side.  When he is done, I tell him:  Nou vat net die helfte van al daai kak.

And it was still a bit of a load.  We’ll get it sorted out soon.

We pose for a “before” photo.

We decide not to fill up yet, and keep the bikes as light as possible, so we can get use to them on the first Gravel roads.

I take a couple of pics with my cellphone on the go.

We hit the first Gravel about 35km out of Bloem and it’s time to pose for a pic.  But Justin is trapped between his tank bag and his luggage.  You will see through the rest of the trip, Justin is always sitting on his bike.  It’s because he can’t get off.
 :imaposer:

The first roads are PURE PERDE PRET, and I twist the Black Stallion’s ear.

 Which way Douglas Green??? ???

Sunrise in the Freestate.

We get to the RietRiver Bridge.

On the other side we find this old car.  Looks like the one from “The Hurt Locker”.  Probably a “fisherman’s friend” , but I don't trust it en ons gooi weer.

Duidelik het die Vrystaat lekker reen gehad deur die winter.

We come across this old abandoned little railway settelment. Steunmekaar.

Justin in front of the old shop.

 Fokoli Petrollie.

We reach the tar road again, about 12km short of Fauresmith.  Justin needs to fill up.  We drive into Fauresmith and take a couple of shots next to the old Steam Locomotive parked in the centre of the Main street.  Justin has to park next to a curb to climb off his bike.

A reminder of a glorious travel era gone by. Out with the old, in with the new.

We exit the same way we came for about 5km and turn left towards Luckhoff.

Lekker piece of road and I “gooi” properly.  I go through Luckhoff so fast I didn’t even get a photo of the town name packed in white stone on the mountainside.

After Luckhoff we get Vanderkloof dam and we stop on the centre spot where somebody gooi ‘n Donut!  As a Civil Engineer and Construction Manager, projects of this magnitude never ceases to amaze me.

Dis donners hoog.

As I look down, I can feel the heights call my name, en ek staan so tree terug.

Die dam hy es nie baaie vol nie my baas, maar darem, hy es hom die naby vol.

From Vanderkloof dam it's a short tar road jump to PetrusVille.  We both fill up, and it's just about time to grab a bite.

Petrus Wie?  In the background is Jakes Tune up Centre.  A good man, and I stop to say hello.  He is a biker himself riding a XR500R.

A short drive around gets us to this spot.  Justin doesn't trust the place.  "Watter tipe mense is al so diep gesuip 11h in die oggend?"  I convince him it will be allright.

As Justin takes his first bite, I ask: "Proe jy ook die katvleis in die wors?"  :imaposer:  He gives his hotdog to me.   >:D

I leave my mark.  Boer Meubels.  That's rather close to my CC's real name: Schoeman Meubels.

Just outside of Petrusville we take a left.  We are heading to Potfontein.

The road surface is immediatly different.  It's bright white and you struggle to see the middelmannetjie.  Gee net horings allie pad.  Along the road I see plenty of animals like meerkat, springhaas and even a steenbokkie runs along the bike for a few seconds.  Unfortunately, a lot of roadkill across the road as well.  :'(

Vaaltyn en Vaaloor. Note the funny slope of the koppies in the background. Kind of a constant 30 degree slope, which ends solid onto the vlaktes.

A very familiar sign in the Karoo, and for the rest of our trip

Sexy bitch

At Potfontein "fokkol oor" Station, we ride onto the old Platform and grab a snack, while we take some photos.

Potfontein Stasie.

Note the old postboxes.  It must've been quite a busy station back in the day.  I get that nostalgic feeling.  I grew up on a farm which use to be the Post office, Vee kraal, shop and Transnet Depo.  My father used to tell me stories starting:  In daarie dae.....

Stasiemeester se huis.  This would truly be a beautiful spot if it's fixed up.  Biker haven.
Gives you that longing feeling for a time gone by...

On the GPS this shows as a airstrip.  How cool was Potfontein in it's HeyDays? Geez. We see white spraypainted markings on the road, and wonder if the "airstrip" was recently used?

Desolation is allright with me.

The gravel roads are long straight and inviting.  I run the bike full taps.  Pure Perde Plesier!
We turn left towards the N10 and we decide to get to Loxton via tar, because the sun is setting fast.  Don't want to be trapped on these roads in the dark. Die jakkalse sal jou opvreet.

We make our heading for the N10, and we have to push.

But we get a sign.

This is a dealbreaker.  As adventurous as I am, If we can't make it through, we have to turn around, giving us a 90km detour.  We will arrive after dark at our overnight spot.  Do I smell a challenge?

And this is it.  Pffffft!!! Ons gooi hom mooi, maar hy is snotglad onder.

We get to the tar, and from here it's tedious and very boring.  Britstown, Victoria Wes and Loxton.

Victoria West.

Ons gaan stuur groete vir Mannetjies Roux.

Mannetjies tells us a little story (as he is known to do).  I've only been on a bike twice in my life, and both occasions I moered off.  He pauses until I ask, Hoe Oom?  My donnerse bene is te kort!   :imaposer:  His eyes sparkle as we have a good laugh.  Classic stuff.

Post by: BOER! on September 07, 2011, 11:34:15 pm
From Victoria Wes we have another boring stretch of tar towards Loxton.  The sun is setting and we get the sun giving us a stare down.  :P

In Loxton I leave my mark I remember as a kid I used to play in the speel parkie in Loxton.  My parents had friends who lived here years ago, and we would visit them over school holidays.  Also Loxton happens to be my first DS biking destination when I got my 1200GS in September 2006.  That makes it only 5 years that I've been riding bikes.  :ricky:

Edit:  If I think about it now, my parent's friends were the dominee.   :D

We don't stop in Loxton, we go round the circle and out toward Beaufort West, but we turn of on the Fraserburg turn off.

The roads are brand new, and the roadworks signs are all over.  Die enigste padskraper in die kontrei is toevallig gister hier deur.

We get lekker water crossings

Justin having a go.

Splish Splash, I was taking a bath.....  The next day I almost see my arse trying this same move....

Ek drip soos 'n perculator.

We make good progress, but in certain place a few deep sand patches rears it's head.  I don't stop or slow down for them, so no photos.  A couple of close calls have my O-ring biting punctures in the Airhawk seat.

Sandy Corner

We safely make it to our destination.  The farms name used to be Kafferskraal, but in 1994 it was changed to Wolwas due to political reasons.  However, all the people in the area still knows the farm by it's old name.  Go figure.

Boer het 'n vrou gekry.  Our host for the evening: Tickey and Selme- Louise, and their 15month old laaitie George.  Tickey participated in the Kyk net series "Boer soek 'n Vrou" and found Selme-Louise with a Love at first sight moment.  Selme- Louise and myself went to Kovsies together ages ago.

We head for our overnight spot

Duck and Dive is the white building up in the distance.  Not the first time I've been to Duck and Dive.  I got engaged here six years ago.  What a beautifull place.  Highly Recommended!!!  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Duck and Dive.

We arrive at the perfect time.  The sun is setting over the dam, and we have a 270 degree view of the most beautifull Karoo sunset.  We settle in, gooi a stywe dop and chill while we watch the sun set over our bikes. I bought some bees biltong in Petrusville, and we set up our stoeltjies and sit in silence, each in his own thoughts about the day gone by.  And the idea of many more like them to come.

What a day!

Tickey organised Karoo Skaap Tjops, and Selme-Louise made us fresh home baked bread with regte plaasbotter and apricot Jam.

Gentleman, we ate like kings, we drank like lords, and we slept like babies.  And this was only the beginning....

Distance for the day:  657km
Total Distance  1207km.

Note:  I will do a full write up about Duck and Dive on another Thread.  You got to do this one.  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Day 3
When I first started planning this trip, the idea was always to not over organise the trip.  I never booked accomodation in advance, and I only had a rough idea of the route I wanted to take.

Today was one of those days where the beauty of one section of the route held us back so much that we had to cut out another section.  But there is always next time...

It got to -2 degrees last night
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/6029/img2011090102282.jpg)

Sunrising over Duck and Dive
(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/714/img2011090102284.jpg)

Just over the first hill, the day promises to have plenty of beauty to show us.

Jy vat hierie pad...

The road I chose to take was the one running south of the normal Loxton – Frasersburg route.  I am so glad I did, because it takes me through farms (with a couple of gates),  and the road is obviously not used often.

Note the grass growing in the “middelmannetjie”   Baie lekker route.

More
(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2056/img2011090102293.jpg)

As a kid, I used to “trek draad” on our farm as well, and this “corner post” fascinates me.  It is called a “drop anker”  Named after the twisted wires pulling to corner upright anchored to a rock on the ground.  i.e dropping.  But to get a rock like that over here??  WTF?

How much flippen water is underground here?  Can you spot all 7 windmills?  There was another 3 on the other side of the road as well

A little later down the road, Nog pompers.  And windpowered generator.  These normally only generate 12v.

I must’ve hit a hobbel at a moerse speed to crack my bashplate like that.  That is 6mm Aluminium.  Geez.  I need a new bolt too.

And then all of a sudden I run out of fuel.  Since I have put the GSA tank on the GS the fuel gauge has not been working.  I have conservatively calculated at 15km/l.  I got 16.7km/l up until now.  According to the mileage done, I should at least get another 100km on the tank.  Now what?

Domkrag.  I tip the bike to it’s side and hold it a few centimeters above ground as to not scratch the new crashbars.  I can here the fuel flowing over from one side to the other.

Daarsy.  Nou kan ons weer ry.

We fill up with petrol at the only pump in Frasersburg and head out to Sutherland.  The locals advise us that the Sutherland – Frasersburg roads are normally quite busy, and to top it all off, roadworks have started on the main road as well.

Luckilly my GPS shows we are taking the “Posroete”  (postal route)  Lekker!  It’s 30km longer than the main gravel road.  So why not.  Let’s go have a look. You can see Justin in the background facing the main road.

The water here is crystal clear.  While I take this photo, Justin plunges into the stream next to me, spraying a wave of water over me, my bike and my camera.

WTF Justin.  See him laughing.   He couldn’t brake in time and swerved and hit the water at speed.

Check daai briekmerke.  Hahaha!

The farms we pass here are all aptly named after stones.  Klipheuwel.  Kliplaagte.  Kliprand.  And so forth...

Justin’s new boots fails the water test.  He is standing in water, in his shoes.

Imagine living here.  Aaaah Eendag as Malema sy kak los, koop ek weer grond.

Die Posroete does not dissapoint.  Around every corner is the most beautifull roads and a perfect day.  Every few minutes we stop and take a few photos.

Justin passing the Windmill and the old Corbelled house.  These houses are packed with stone in an intricate manner so that the stones forms the roof as well.  Fokken Genius Pappa.  Voortrekkers made do with what they had available.  Stones.

Waiting for the boss.  I like the square stone garden path.  Must’ve been quite a mix and match to build these structures and paths and kraal.

Round the house
(http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3747/img0232xw.jpg)

Note on the left above my bike where the reeds are.  That is how the water was flowing through here after all the rains recently.

So wyd soes die Jirre se Gendade!  Bliksem. All this level with water!  And there are quite a number of farms in between the “stroompies”   I am sure a lot of people were cut off from the rest of the world for weeks during the rainy season.

Here is  where I almost saw my arse trying to open throttle in the water.  The cement bed is quite snotty with moss.  Nog ‘n briekmerk.

Sout van die aarde.  We meet this Father and son busy hunting Jackals.(http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/4817/img2011090102337.jpg)
A way of life in the Karoo.  We stop to have a chat to them.  Man what a pleasure!  Here are some of the things he had to say:

Ek was nog nooit uit die Karoo eens gewees nie.  My swaer was al tot bo in Pretoria saam my pa een keer.  Hulle s’e daar is fokkol beskawing daar bo nie.

Nou hoe so oom?

....pauses..... Wel, daar is nie eens ‘n windpomp in sig van na die Oranje rivier nie.

Die fokken jakkalse eet my skape op, drol en al.

Nou wavver bike is die vinnigste. (he peeps at my clocks and then at Justin’s. 1200GS marked to 220km/h.  800GS marked to 240km/h)  Nou dis die seker lat jy (pointing at me) moet voor ry.  Hy gee jou die headstart.

Die stootskraper het in Januarie hierbo vasgesit (I actually did see the spot where it got stuck) Tot nou toe is die donners te bang om terug te kom om klaar te kom skraap.  Seker oorlat ek hulle so vinnig daar uitgesleep het met die Massey Ferguson (Apperently the grader got unstuck with quite a jerk, after he opened throttle on his tractor)

More water crossings testing Justin’s Boot’s Waterproofing.

Rhenoster Valley Guest house.  Got to book in advance, but man, what a spot to bring the family.

More scenic roads.

Some artistic entrance to a farm.  Solid steel on them old cars.

Another pretty stream.

Justin drying his socks and boots again.

Can you spot the Sutherland telescope?

More and more blommetjies along the way.

Sutherland.  At least today is a little warmer than normal.

We have bite here.  Owner is also a biker and very friendly.  Food is great and beer is cold.

Justin puts Shoprite bags over his feet to keep water out.  It works.  Kind off.

After Sutherland, we decide to skip Moordenaars Karoo.  I would like to do Tankwa and Gannaga Pass instead.

On our way to Tankwa Karoo National Park.

More evidence of the rain that fell here.  Don’t want to hit that at speed!

The road keeps running next to this river.  Around every corner the twists and turns astound me.  And it’s lush and green after all the rain.

Not long, and we get the turnoff.  I am quite excited about this one.  Seems somebody else has been here too.

The road to the top is not difficult at all, and the view from the top is Whoa!

The wind is blowing like crazy.

What a view.

The roads down the pass are steep and cuts back on itself a couple of times.

Did I say steep?  I park my bike into a rock.

Some more photos
(http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/7329/img2011090102389.jpg)

Here we are at the bottom and it’s vygies every where.

At the bottom of Ouberg the roads level out again, and we can “gooi” a bit more.

But I constantly have to stop for the scenery.  Lekker.

Arty Photo, or at least I tried.

And here we are  mid afternoon allready.

(http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/6844/img2011090102414.jpg/img]Seems I know some of these usual suspects.[img]http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7855/img2011090102415.jpg)

Karoo Table Mountain.

Got to choose your line carefully here.  Landing in the left lane can seriously damage your health.

We arrive at the Tankwa Karoo Office.  We won't be able to make it over Gannaga Pass before nightfall.  We will have to do it tomorrow morning.

En nou, Watter kant toe nou.  We chose to camp at Langkloof Camping spot.  They are still building the ablutions, but it’s cheap and we are a GO!  16km to dubbel brandewyn en Coke.

Some washed away sections where we have to take it easy.

Landscape changes again, and the sun is slowly setting on a very lekker day.

The manager at the office warned us about a hectic river crossing.  This was it.  Couple of lekker suprise holes and then slippery rocks but nothing too serious.

Through on the other side.

Waiting for Justin

So I wait a few minutes, but Justin doesn’t show.  O fok.  :o  I turn the bike around and back over the river crossing.  About 3 km down I find Justin had a front wheel wipe out after he misjudged a double S- curve.  He had a solid side neerslet on his left and his ribs are very sore.  When I come around the corner, I was so worried, but I see him standing and sigh of relief.

Bly ek het nie my kamera by gehad vir die impak slag nie.

Damage.  This bike is now called Anderman-se-vrou-koekeloerder.

We make our way back to the watercrossing and I guide Justin through.  I am quite concerned about his ribs being broken or cracked.  Pain normally tends to set in two to three days later.

We get to the camping spot and I start pitching the tents and make a fire.  Then coffee.  Justin has gone to the next door campers and asked them to braai our wors for us.  I make the fire inside an old room in a derelict house to block it away from the wind.  Later that night the wind picks up and starts swirling the smoke around.  Shit.  Backfired plan.

The roof, The roof, The roof is on fire!

Tents set up.  Quick and without hassle.

We park the bikes back to back to block the wind off a bit.  Not that it helped  much.

Justin is off to bed early and I sit and dop on my own like an alcoholic until the wind starts to blow smoke in my eyes.

By the time I go to bed, it starts to drizzle slightly.  :o

Distance for the day:   398km

Total so far. 1605km.

Day 4

I wake up at 2am with the wind howling and rukking and plukking at the tents..  Justin is snoring away.  The slight drizzle has become much harder now and it has been a constant rain for at least an hour.

I get out of my tent, and the rain stops for a few minutes.  I gather up my ATTGAT, and stuff it in the tent in an attempt to have dry clothing for the next day.  I take a walk down to the stream to get water, and fill up my Camelback at the same time.

A river runs through it.   This is the little stream I went to at 2am in the morning.
As I am filling my camelback with water from the stream, I am sure I can hear footsteps.  It's slow and not constant but I can definetly hear the rocks as if something is coming towards me. And suddenly, Lower down, I hear more footsteps.  I nearly kak myself and switch my torch off quickly.  My mind is racing. (I am still a bit under the influence from all that Solo Brandy drinking)  I am now sorry I didn't take the time to read the information pamflet that I got at the Tankwa offices.  Shit!  What animals could they have here that would...... OH Flippit! :o   I should've read that manual.  The footsteps are now all over and it sounds like I am surrounded.  I switch my headlamp on again, and light up and down the stream, expecting to see eyes surrounding me.   Nothing. I switch it off again, and I listen.  Now, It's silent again. I wait a few seconds.  And then more sounds..... But the "footsteps" now sounds familiar, different.  It actually sounds like a windmill gnashing in the wind.  That is what I heard, and it simply echoed up and down the stream.  I feel like a complete idiot and laugh at myself as I head back to Camp Wetness.

I get back to my tent, and I hope the rain stays away. Ag PLEASE!   Just as I get back in the tent, the heavens open up and it is really pissing down on us.  I try to get some sleep, but I am worried about mud the next morning, and Justin's ribs is still hurting.

Hier kom moeilikheid!  This I know for sure.  Adventure riding at it’s best.

Our neighbours packing up and leaving early next morning.   They also had enough of the water.  Note the windmill to the right. That's the beast I heard last night.  LOL
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1315/img2011090202442.jpg)

The muddy tracks they leave behind makes me worry allready.  It’s still raining down hard, the wind is howling, and we have at least another hour’s packing to do.  I am starting to get worried we won’t even be able to get out of here.

Our campsite in the moring.  Wet wet wet.

All of our kit is soaked.

What was solid last night, is now a sludge mud bath.  Everywhere I step, I pick up more mud on my boots.

Justin battling the wind monster.

Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light.   About 15km straight ahead of us, the sun is shining brightly.   We are trapped in a kloof where the water is forced down on us.  I know we have to get out of here.

The next 6kms takes us close to an hour of mud-duckwalking in first gear all the way.  As soon as I lift my feet onto the footpegs, the bike starts to slide all over.  Luckilly I keep it upright, but leaves me panting.  And I can’t see boggerol.  If I close the visor, it fogs up.  If I open it, the raindrops sting my eyes and my face.

And I constantly have to walk back and help Justin push his bike through certain sections as well.  Flippin pakdonkie 800GS.

Eventually, after about an hour, I give a sigh of relief.  We have reached the river crossing, and on the other side the ground is firmer.  Even though it’s still wet, it’s not just mud like on the other side.  I can at least hook the second gear.

It was raining constantly all the way here, so no photos....

We pass the spot where Justin had his off the afternoon before. It now feels a lifetime ago.  And the tracks are allready washed away by last nights rain.

Give me hope, Johanna!  The rain clears, and the roads are firmer again.  I think we’ve made it.

Justin is out of his comfort zone, but still shows a thumbs up.  I kinda pushed my buddy a bit here, but when we talk about this trip, THIS part is what he remembers best.  That is what adventure riding means to me.

Happy to be out of the rain.  Note my “swartsak” raincoat under my Attgat.  It worked, I tell you.

Justin putting distance between the campsite and ourselves.  You can see the kloof where we were trapped in the rain.

The Langkloof campsite is nested in between two massive mountains on both side. (as seen in the background) The clouds forming over the mountains are blown across, and as soon as the clouds blow over the kloof, it dips very fast and cools down.  It explains why we were getting pissed on in the kloof,  while we could see the sun shining 15km’s ahead, on the open vlaktes.

At last the sun is shining.  But another reality sets in.  The clouds on top of the mountains are right over Gannaga Pass.  I don’t want to risk doing this pass in the wet, so we have to detour to the Rodewerf Road towards Calvinia.  We will be skipping Middelpos today.  Agge nee man.

Sunlight on my face
(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2475/img2011090202452.jpg)

More clouds rolling in.  Gannaga is definetly not happening today
(http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2209/img2011090202451.jpg)

We check in at the office.  They recorded an Inch and a half of rain overnight.   :P

I leave the office with a heavy heart.  I really wanted to do Gannaga Pass, and Middelpos, and on the way I planned to stop over at MOF.

Ag well, Ja no Fine.  Like I said earlier,  I have to accept and take it as it comes, hey.

So we head up to the Rodewerf Road.  At least I get a photo where the road splits towards Gannaga Pass/Calvinia.

And My Word, It does look promising, doesn't it?

It's obvious this area had a lot of overnight rain as well, with certain areas giving me a lekker slide followed by a groot skrik!

Even though it's not raining, the roads are slippery and more clouds are rolling in. Just look at that view!!

Justin is doing all right and not in too much pain.  But he still doesn't get off his bike.  Hehehe
(http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/6647/img2011090202461.jpg)

I find this here when I stop to take a leak, and I think Heimer has been here....

A farmboy at heart, this photo reminds me of how farm people have to make do with whatever form of energy is available.  Look at the multiple energy resources.  Windmill, solar power, Diesel, and Generating 12v with wind as well
(http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/1001/img2011090202464.jpg)

Just ahead in the road from where I took thisw photo, we get another washed away river crossing.  It obviously rained more here last night.

The Rodewerf Road is not too busy, but we encounter Gauteng Tourists, but that photo is too blurry.  The old toppie driving the car shakes his head and points at my bike. Julle is mal om met die goed hier in die modder te kom rondry!! he tells me.  But his eyes are lying.  I can see he wishes he was along with us on this trip.  Every time we stop to take a photo, they catch up with us and he waives cheerfully. But I can see his wife is a long tall glass of sour milk.  Shame.  >:D

Here we are now.  Entertain us!  The Ceres/Calvinia Road.  It promised us more rain, and it didn't dissapoint.

Mudder gum on my boots today.  Our feet are soak inside our boots.  When we got dressed, we had to stand outside the tent anyway and our socks got soaked.  Not much waterproof boots could do to prevent wet feet.

Since I have started traveling off road, I loath Tar roads.  I find them long, boring, and tedious to ride.  They wear me out twice as fast as any gravel road.
But,
with all the rain and mud and sliding from left lane, to right lane to centre lane on the gravel highway towards Calvinia, I find myself screaming with joy when I finally see the sure promise of grey Tarmac about 700m ahead of me.

But I was mistaken.  It's blue shale rock, used to build the Blaauwkrantz Pass.   Oh well more wet gravel then
(http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8705/img2011090202469.jpg)
I stop to take a photo of the road surface, but my hands are so numb, I never pushed the button.  I only realised it later.  This photo above I took of the long leaning turns that are on the Blaauwkrants Road.  Pure bliss.  I open the throttle a bit and enjoying myself more and more.

As soon as we start climbing up on the pass, it starts to rain again.  That kind of constant drizzling rain that farmers love so much.

Today, I didn't like it that much.  The temprature drops, and add windchill factor to that,  pretty soon my hands are numb and i can't feel them

Then I get pins and needles in my left hand and I pull over and pull the gloves off. No wonder I can't feel my hands. My fingers are freezing.  Justin's bike shows the temprature as ZERO.  Then add windchill factor.

On this road I had so many close calls, my arse was eating my underwear.  It must've looked like Joost's onderbroek in that video.

I count down every 100m towards Calvinia.  I am freezing cold, can't feel my hands or my feet, and the rain is stinging my face. But,  I am still having the time of my LIFE!

By the time we reach Calvinia, it is 13h30.  It took us 5 and a half hours to do 130km's.  We fill up and go look for food.

In Calvinia, we find a very nice restaurant called 250 Myl.  The friendly tannie shakes her head as we leave a mud and drip trail behind us.  She switches on the gas heater and we hog the whole thing to ourselves.  We hang all our kit out over chairs around the heater to get them as dry as possible.

It's decision time.  Justin want's to book a guesthouse right here, right now.  He is sore and cold.  I check on my phone for a weather update, and it seems up north the sun is shining a bit more.  Verneukpan was my intention for camp tonite.  Verneukpan temprature shows 28 degrees.

I convince Justin, that we should push on, and get to Verneuk pan.  It will be better from there.  He reluctantly agrees.

250 myl.  Hallo Liefie.  We don't have much signal elsewhere in the Karoo and whenever we do, we used it to check in on the loved ones, and take care of some business.

My rear rim picked up some stone on the Blaaukrantz Pass.

So we have a bite to eat.  We drink plenty of sherries to warm us up.  And away we go.  To get Justin to agree to continue for the day, I promised we could stick to tar towards Brandvlei.

150kms of crosswinds cooling us down even more.  It batters and shatters us, and by the time we reach Brandvlei, I surrender.  It's allready 15h30.  It's another 2hours ride to verneuk pan, and we will most probably reach it by dark tonite.  Then we have to pitch all our gear again, which is still wet from this mornings fiasco.

WE agree to book in the Brandvlei Hotel.  Good choice.   :thumleft:

The Hilton Hotel, (for us that is)

The owner is very friendly and very helpfull.  R190 pppn.  Plus R100 for Supper and breakfast.  Plus he offers to put a bar heater in the room to heat us up, and he would get his wife to take all our clothes home and get them in the tumble drier.  Please guys, go support Brandvlei Hotel.  What a pleasure.

He also insist we park our bikes on the stoep outside our bedroom
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/3716/img2011090202479.jpg)

We both take a warm bath, (we had to wait for the geyser for a while) we start packing our kit all over  in the room with the bar heater on full blast.  We are allready feeling better and in high spirits and off to the bar we go.

Justin is striking up conversation with this old toppie.  He walked in sober, ordered a Black Label Quart, and with every sip he slurred more and more.  With his last sip he mumbled good nite, let go off the bar, and swayed out the door completely knackered.  I had a good laugh watching Justin trying to figure this guy out.   :imaposer:

The dining room.  Red Lark Restaurant.  Not much at first Glance....

But the food that comes out of there.   :o  This meal cost R65 and included desert after.  :thumleft:

We went to bed early.  We felt warm again, enough sherry consumed, and our kit was allready drying in the room.  All our wet clothing was on it's way to the owner's house.

Tomorrow, another Highlight awaited.  Verneuk pan!!!

Distance for the day:  300km

Total so far:  1905km.

We leave Brandvlei full of anticipation for Verneuk Pan.  The roads are in great condition and we make great time.

I even let Justin lead for a bit.  He has gained confidence and I find it harder to leave him behind for longer than 30seconds.

Me having a look.

This gate latch fascinates me.  I’ve built and repaired plenty of gates on the farm when I grew up.  With bike gloves it’s quite tricky to open and close.

Like I mentioned earlier, I did quite a bit of “draadtrek” myself as a youngster.  Especially when we enclosed our farm to become a  Game farm.  However that was across mountains, ravines and bushveld.  Draadtrekkers are paid per pole/dropper and down anker, each at it’s own rate.  This job has to be a sure money maker.

The main gate is locked. And we cant go further.  However the name Verneuk Pan is justified when Justin exclaimed:  We won’t be able to ride there any way.  It’s all under water.  (Bear in mind his fear of mud and water from yesterday.)

We take a ride around the 5kms or so plains next to the fence.   Justin gets to see for himself that the water illusion is created by these black rocks on the surface.

The road to Kenhardt is a little rougher than the gravel highways we took coming into the pan.  Lots of ruts across the road, heavy corrugation and a spot or two of heavy sand.

Plus we have to stop all the time to open and close the gates, for sheep that is nowhere to be seen.

Gates and more sukkling with the catches.

Justin heading up the rear again.  His sore ribs are now seriously taking a beating.

Eventually we get better gravel roads again.  We are heading toward the R27 Tar road.  Lunch is calling.

A Husky

A Girlfriend for Carrots

Some genuine quality appliances.  This is a MIELLE!! Washingmashine.

As we undress the Atgatt, a friendly local oom appears.  He is a biker too, he says. He heard the bikes roar and had to come and have a look at who is here.

What bike, Oom?

Yamaha XT 660l

Lekker Oom.  Do you know 2StrokeDan?

Wie's dit?

God's Gift to Yamaha, Oom.

Hy's 'n rumour.

I nearly piss myself at his reply.   >:D

Justin is in a lot of discomfort, and wants to stick to tar roads.  Unfortunately the only tar roads are either north to Keimoes, or south to Brandvlei.

So we ask around, and they assure Justin that the Putsonderwater road is in good condition at the moment.

I phone ETS, and it is a done deal.  Destination Prieska.

Kenhardt

Quite a little interesting place, Kenhardt.  First thing I noticed is the Palm Trees, and the heat.  Gives the whole town a bit of an Oasis feel to it.  Kenhart was the most isolated police, administrative and magistarial (sic?) headquarters during the Koranna rebelions post 1870.

Some photos

Palm Trees, Freshly painted houses, and dusty roads
(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/9314/img2011090302574.jpg)

Kokerbome on Main road.  Ironically the church and police station are on opposite sides of the street
(http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/2111/img2011090302576.jpg)

Some more useless info.
THere is a kokerboom forest 8km outside of Kenhardt.  we passed it on the way in.  Over 5000 trees.   :o  Worth a visit

There is a Camelthorn tree still in town.  Guessed at 500-600 years old, and still alive. The town of Kenhardt was started under this tree.

Justin and I decide to split up.  Justin want's to take a short cut directly to Prieska, and I want to go to Prieska via Van Wyksvlei.  Justin will be going via Putsonderwater, and meet up with ETS in Prieska.

Just outside of Kenhard, is the Rooibergdam.  Built for irrigation purposes for the farmers.  Just to the right of this photo
(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/6335/img2011090302579.jpg)

The gravel road to Van  Wyksvlei is long and straight.  About 160km of pure bliss again.

Boer Maak 'n plan.  This farmer used the Tolbos, and Kakiebos, and built this structure with Poles and wire across.  Then all the bushes are simply chucked on top, and the thorns intertwine themselves to form a shade port for his sheep.  NOt a tree in site. Fokken Genius Kwagga.

These roads are more fun than what should be legal....

Prieska left, Van Wyksvlei Regs.

I filled up my Camelbak in Van wyksvlei and then shoot straight through to Prieska.  I havent heard from Justin yet, and I get worried.  He should've made it to Prieska allready.

The gravel roads to Prieska are in very good condition too.

And suprise suprise, I get tar about 60km out of Prieska.  I stop to take a photo, and Justin's Sms comes through. He is safe in Prieska.   :thumleft:

Moerse Bird squatter Camps
(http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/4323/img2011090302592.jpg)

I get to Prieska and decide to ride around before phoning ETS.  Town is quite a easy layout and I find ETS on the golf course while I am still riding around.  Co incidence.

The rest of the day, we spend in ETS and his lovely wife's company.

He had a golf day and we are invited to join them for the braai and a few lekker beers at the local golf Club bar.

We eat drink and laugh, till late, and then it's off to ETS's house where we sit up and chat about bikes and trips untill way past midnight.

When my head touches the pillow, I'm gone immediatly

TX ETS!!!!

Distance for the day:  500km

Total Distance:  2406km
