Title: Our permanent charity of choice: The Wilddog sanctionary at Sanwild
Post by: KiLRoy on June 11, 2007, 10:47:36 am
After numerous requests from members and lengthy discussions with EV, we finally came to the conclusion that our permanent charity of choice need to be the Wild dog sanctionary.  I'm not saying we would not do any other work where we can (like the Groot Klip stuff etc), but this one we shall formally support and do so continuously.

We do get our name and brand from the Wild dogs, so maybe we owe them one back  ;D.  I'm not the most knowledgeable person in this regard, but do know the Wild Dogs are on the endangered list and are extremely difficult to rehabilitate and to find suitable parks/areas for them to roam.  Like us they need lots of space and can travel far.  Wino and me always had a liking for wolves and their ways, so I guess in a way Wild Dogs are the 'African Wolves'.

Thanx for all your advise and chats EV - you may proceed telling us all about the project, maybe getting that lady from Sanwild to join, in order to educate us on whats happening, show pics and give updates.

To contribute, we shall eventually have a online payment capability, for the interim we'll post their banking details.  Please, nobody is under any obligation - but if you can afford it and if so inclined - help this worthy cause so that the Wild Dogs can keep on running free.

Cheers
Hein

Great Choice. I have been involved in charity work before. In my experience sometimes / most times money is difficult to get out of people. Is there anything else that they may need?

www.sanwild.org for further info.....

AND VERY EXCITING NEWS !!!!  I have just spoken to Louise at Sanwild.  The Wild Dogs have gotten puppies (three of them) which makes their release back into the wild a much better proposal and Louise is giving us the rights to name the puppies.  HEr only request is that you give them genderless names.

Please aslo note that they have accommodation as well at the Sanctuary which will always make for a great trip and overnight stay should you ever wish to do something different.

Just mention our names.....

I am so excited.  Louise is also sending me the photies of the puppies, so once I have them I will put them up!

Please do remember that funds and making people aware of the project are of the essence - if you can arrange for fundraisers or awareness evenings at which Louise or any representative of hers can talk, that would be great !!!!!

Here is info from Louise in my last communication with her:

Hi there

The adult wilddogs are called Takoda (male) Wappi (Alpha female), Tiponi and Surya.

Wappi has given birth to the pups.  Her terrible facial injuries was sustained when she lived at the Farm Inn just outside Pretoria as a pup along with Surya and Tino who also have permanent facial injuries, but not as bad as Wappi.  All three dogs had extensive surgery at Onderstepoort and while they will always remain our "ugly puppies" they have adapted and are coping very well despite the terrible scaring.  I am so proud of them.  Takoda is the only one that had no injuries.

Let me know if you need more info.

Kind regards
Louise

And here are some pics of the pups - I won't show you the pics of the dogs before they were fixed up; its very upsetting......

Wow.  This new forum is running!!

I started researching wilddogs sommer because I wanted to, and this could not have come at a better time.  I can give some informed feedback in a week or two's time, after I went through everything, if you guys are interested.  There are still a few sources I want to check.

The sad thing at the moment is that if there are not radical intervention our grand children will probably never see them in the wild.

Keep up the good work guys.

Its also true that they urinate on each other before a hunt in order to enhance team spirit and cohesiveness.  I'll be delighted to perform this ritual on selected members before each ride  ;D   I know of a good few who can do with a shower  ;D ;D (and not all of them are on BM's  ;D)

Hey come on - we've been given the honour of giving names to these pups - let's hear some suggestions out there......

EV, this is your baby - ask for suggestions, make a shortlist and run a poll.  We would like to meet the wd lady, do they have www access?  You can get and post the donation banking details too.

If we make donations, i suggest typing Wilddog........ (your name) in the 'name on beneficiary's statement' column - that way they know where it comes from.

Doohickey - my puppy name suggestion.... ;D

I would suggest that the people in the area take the time to go visit Sanwild one weekend.

You can stay over in their bush camp as well.  I owuld recommedn you call Louise, tell her who and what we are (although I have obviously discussed this with her already) and go visit.

Here are banking details etc. but remember to ensure that should you make any donation it is labelled quite clearly Wild Dogs

Should you choose to send us a personal or company cheque, kindly make it payable to the SanWild Wildlife Trust and mail it to Postal Box 418, Letsitele, 0885 South Africa.

Donations by means of direct banking transfers can by made into our bank account in South Africa;

ABSA, Danie Joubert Street, Tzaneen, 0850.  Account number 9111221180, Branch Code: 334349 Swift Code: ABSAZAJJ.  All payments in favour of The SanWild Wildlife Trust.

Any donation would be appreciated - no matter how big or small. If you need any additional information please do not hesitate to call our office +27 (0) 15-3187900 telephone, +27 (0) 15-3187901 fax, or email us at sanwild@pixie.co.za

Non gender names...
Shortened versions based on African countries WD members ride thru often.

Nam, Moz, Bots.

Or perhaps Sani if Bots is unsuitable.

Ok guys - thanks for all the input on the names.  The official word from Louise at Sanwild is that the puppies have been called by the following names:

We have chosen the following names: Uhambo, Thinta, Babazeka.

Louise has also mentioned that she is hoping to see some of the Wild Dog people soon - perhaps one of you would like to organise a visit?

You are so lucky - I have always desperately wanted to visit.  Maybe one day, but in the meantime, it would be good to get a report back from others.

Have fun

EV

I might sound like a sourpuss but I do not ... so ... who came up with those names?   ??? Was there a separate thread for choosing names? You can not give a kid sweets and then take it back.  >:( OK. I am a sourpuss. Sorry.    ;)

They chose names already as posted previously and as for the rest, I don't know.  I waas hoping that someone from the area would arrange a visit, the banking details etc. are up and if you want, I can arrange a fundraiser for the place on behalf of Wild Dogs in October maybe here in Cape Town and maybe someone would like to do the same in Gauteng and Durban.

But yeah, I think if the people in Gauteng maybe did a Sunday ride to the place or an overnighter, I could arrange that with Louise if you just give me dates, just so that you can all check it out.

Come back to me with what you would like to do, but please, I can't do everything compeltely on my own.  If we are going to do this, I would need to liaise with volunteers, so either pm me or lejane@bunnyhuggers.co.za it is.

Thanks

;D  Good Idea.  I can tell you a great place for us to visit here in the Cape - the Drakenstein Lion Park with a special talk by the owner.  Fantastic place, fantastic work done - very special.  I can always arrange.....

Anyway, back to saving the world again.  Hope I can also post the fundraiser for the Campaign against Canned Hunting on the 12th September in Table View, the raffle for the Lion Sanctuary, the animal rights film festival, the Animals Rock Concert in Durbanville in November where you can see a wild dog in action on drums, the animal awareness day in December which ends in an eighties party with band and all.

As you can see, the only time we can fit a fundraiser for Sanwild in is in October, but I think I could put something together pretty good together as long as I can rely on you guys to ensure that all the tickets are sold.

Thanks.......

I've just realised, I could most prob sort out a function Joburg as well, but would need Wild Dogs to promise to sell tickets if we are going to go ahead and one person to oversee proceedings as I wouldn't be able to fly up and finalise everything.

anyway, all up to you guys, call me if you ever wish me to go ahead.
