Title: Ruins
Post by: The Rock on November 08, 2011, 11:29:30 am
I did a quick search and there doesn't seem to be a picture thread for ruins - those old, fallen apart houses that you see when riding on some far away dirt road. I'm always intrigued by them and their history.

Here are a few pics of a such a ruin in the Anysberg. Lets see some of yours as well - and tell us where you took the pic/s.  :thumleft:

NOTE: Seeing as I started this thread, can I ask that the pics you post here are attached to your post and not hosted elsewhere. Most of those pic host sites are blocked here and I can't see the pics! thanx!

Excellent idea for a thread,  :thumleft:
but let's keep SAR ruins out of it... they have a spot here; :deal:

yes, ruins (as in falling apart!) of old houses only! there are other threads for stations and bridges and churches etc etc etc...

Taken while riding in Bainsvlei, flood damage during the 1988 flood caused it to be abandoned. This was after we had more floods in the vicinity last year... there was a huge pan of water on the property.

Title: Re: Ruins
Post by: Riebeeker on November 09, 2011, 09:07:06 am

I.W. vd Merwe Boerneef
Biografiese inligting
Hy verwerf ’n M.A.- en B.Ed-graad.

I find the construction methods the most interesting of all in these ruins.

Sun-dried unbaked clay bricks with mud mortar.
Rammed earth
Hand-packed stone
Wattle-and-daub

These are traditional building methods that are at risk of disappearing from use in modern society.
It's fascinating !  ;D

I always look at the old farmhouse ruins and think of the hardship that the people who lived there had gone through, especially just before the last people had to move on ,probably bankrupt from droughts and down to their last money . I sometimes stand there for a while and try to get the feel of how it was , same with old neglected graves ,just gets to me  :'(

My mind also dwells on that when I see old homesteads falling into ruin.
Then I remember the last few lines of 'Desiderata':

"...whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful."

(But it does still brings a tear to my eye at times...)

Not certain if all these pics qualify but here goes: Worked in the United States after Katrina and took these in 2007/8, whenever onshore we used to go hiking and target shooting in the swamps outside New Orleans and came across this destroyed house, the occupants must have abandoned the place in a hurry and it was quite eerie as there were still toys and valuables strewn around and even the bathroom cupboards were still stocked with toileteries

I've never been able to work out why Americans living in hurricane alley don't build their houses out of concrete?
I know timber is cheap there, but storm shelter is not a matter of economics either.

Can't agree more, the same with the online gas supply to their wooden houses, no wonder their fire fighters are considered to be the elite

Wow, interesting.
I was at The Downs often in the seventies and eighties. My father worked for government and was one of the persons that started this (and many other) reserves in the old homelands.
